  • Hey Pat welcome back to running!! New avatar? Cute kitty!!

Helen you've had a double whammy day too!! Kewl... Tomorrow I get mine, weights in the morning and swimming in the evening I love those days LD ...

Today 6.15k run... It was nice and cool 3F some of us even took off our jackets...
  • Thanks, Ilene. Love your new signature too! That's my Comet kitty. She's a love, but always into something. This was cute when it started but we had to break her of it - it was driving us nuts always turning on the water for her. :lol

I'm nicely sore from my body pump class, but Thurs evening I'll be up for Day 2! I'll be thinking of you running outdoors. It's once again -15F (-26C) here, so any time outdoors is very brief!!
  • Hey Pat - I'm just finishing C25K, it's GREAT I never knew I could run at all till I stuck to this!

I'm posting here to tell you all I should be going out for a run at lunch, but it's below zero. I know you guys have that all the time and run in crazy sub-zero temperatures but I'm an official wuss when it comes to the cold now! I've got no insulation

Going to report back whether I go or not (I'd better since I might be missing my weekend run....)
  • GO 2F!!!
  • and Pat ... -15C is great if there is and no wind!!
  • 8k steady pace for me yesterday. More of a workout than an easy day, but not quite the pain of a tempo or intervals. It was WARM -3, no wind, bright but not sunny. I wore no mitts or head band, no jacket, just a fleece top and tights (ok, and shoes and socks). And I even ended up rolling up my sleeves half way through the run. This has been a truly bizarre winter weather wise. Tons of snow and much warmer temperatures too. Today should be 6.5k easy in snow flurries.

Pat, ok, so -26C is a bit on the cold side, but it's doable if the wind isn't too bad. Last year we had lots of days in that range or colder. I'd wear 2 long sleeve tops, a windbreaker, long johns (sometimes 2 prs) and wind pants. Plus a fleece neck warmer and a headband. You can get out there and do it! I got so used to running in the real cold, that one sunny, windless day I took of my fleece headband when it was "only" around -10 to -15C and ended up getting frost bite on my ears. I'm not that sorry though, that this year's coldest temperature has been -24C. Of course, I did C25K in summer, the walking parts would really suck in the winter.

Ilene, sounds like you have a fun group to run with.

(Foot tapping) Does this mean there was no lunch hour run 2F?
  • Good morning all!

I had Day #3 of the 16-week beginning runner's program. During the week, we work out on our own, but per the schedule they provide every Sat. Yesterday was 10 walk, 3 jog/2 walk 2x and 10 walk. Ok, for me the walk was not the issue, the jogging was what brought much trepidation. But I did it!

It wasn't easy and it wasn't fun, but I did it and it was satisfying. The shins were not hurting as much as they were during Saturday's 10 minute group jogging portion, (which was based on being the sold the wrong shoes for a problem I did not have - all better now- right shoes!!!), however, I need to be mindful not to skip stretching (duh!).

Today is 12 walk, 6 jog, 12 walk. I'm trying to get myself psyched up, instead of psyched out about the 6-minute run, all together, w/o a break, just moving, at a jog for six minutes! WITH NO MUSIC, none, we are not allowed to workout outside w/earphones alone, according to our coach, which is great for safety, but leaves no room for distraction. I'm considering hopping on the treadmill for this one, b/c the TV could keep me occupied for 6 minutes instead of the clock. Is that cheating?

I feel a bit accomplished and am willing to power ahead. Funny, during the Sat. workout, I realized that I have become very spoiled and lazy. When the workout got hard, I took on the attitude that I didn't have to be there, I could go sit on a picnic table, b/c I was an adult and no one could make me do anything I didn't want to do! Yeah, I said it (to myself), I did stop running, i.e. the wrong shoe/shin fiasco. However, I didn't stop walking as fast and hard as my legs could take me. One thing that kept me going was the group, there are about 75 to 100 of us and we range from fit to not so much, the one thing we have in common is that we are beginner runner's and we want to succeed at this program and take as many of us who are willing to the finish line. When I stopped, people I didn't even know or just met were jogging alongside giving encouraging words throughout - who could go sit at a picnic table with that?

I am encouraged by the possibilities that I create for myself and the great health, I am encouraged by the awesome purple team and I am encouraged by this forum!

Thank you and have a great day!

    Torrey
  • Damn you caught me!

I was out on an assesment with my biker dude colleague and he asked did I mind if we went to this new bike shop on the way back.... So we went there and I bought new handlebar muffs and so no I didn't go out for a run.

BUT I do have to practise my kickboxing tonight so I will be moving my a$$ and doing my weights too... I'm a bit bummed I didn't get my run, I'm going to try harder to get my weekend one done now.
  • Double whammy today too, weights before work and yoga later this evening.

    But the big news is...

I've decided to run a marathon in September. I've been looking at training schedules and realised that I'm easily at the base level at the moment, and I've got 7 months to work my way up, which gives me 3 or 4 months to consolidate at this level before starting a 3 - 4 month plan. I'm not struggling at all with the half marathon schedule at the moment, so I figured that if I follow a proper plan it will build me up gently like this one. It all sounded very doable, so I've signed up to run in Berlin!

    I must be mad

But Ilene, its -15F! or -26C Sorry but my old bones would not be happy. I'll go out when it's above 0F but otherwise I'm on the

I don't mind walking on the as long as I have music or a book on tape. And Torrey I don't think watching TV is cheating at all, especially if it'll let you run for 6 minutes. Once you know you can, it'll be easier to do without distraction.

Helen - You are really coming along with your running. Now a marathon! Wow.

Frus, isn't it amazing how quickly it comes along (the running, I mean)? I did C25K back in the late winter/early spring of 2000 when we were living in Seattle, a much nicer climate for outdoor running! About 5-7 minutes from our apt was a small resevoir with a 1/3 mile track around it. I would use the walk over for a warm-up and then use the track to do my time. There were always people around, either cutting through to get somewhere, or running/walking, or when it was nice, just hanging out on the grass. Sometimes DH would come with me (we were living there while he had a bone marrow transplant) and sit on a bench and cheer me on. I was amazed how quickly I could actually run all the mileage. I competed in 2 5Ks while we were there, and several more after we got home. Then in fall 2001 I got PF and couldn't run for several months, and didn't get back into it, though I did walk a couple of 5Ks after that. There's a 5K race to raise $$ for Library Technology in June every year, and I'd like to run that this year (I've run it once and walked it twice). Since I'm the director of my city's library, I think it's cool to run in the race (though I always work on the registration and festivities after).
  • Helen, congrats on signing up for the marathon! You'll do great.

    Pat welcome back to it.

Tomorrow is a running day for me. Today was cycling and Mon & Tues were sleep. Zzzzzzzzz.....
  • I did a 4 mile speed workout on the treadmill this morning, and managed to average 9 minute miles . Not ultra fast, but definitely fast for me over that distance, I normally start to slow down well before 4 miles if I start off too fast!
  • Well as one who's never done faster than 12 minutes miles, it sounds really fast. Congrats!
  • Helen, cheers for signing up for the marathon.

    2F, congrats for finishing C25K!

I did ok this week, averaging 10.5 miles per week. Next week I'm going for 13 miles and eventually I would like to get in 20 miles a week. We'll see. Loving the treadmill.
  • YP - Congrats on the pace... I average 11.0

Tonight was 6.1k, in -16c windchill, I was definitely cold for half the run then I was HOT, dang is there no happy medium?
