i have had lots of fun with my pedometer. i've regularly done at least 10,000 steps a day, but that includes an hour hike or an hour walk. on days when i've done the walk AND the grocery shopping AND the laundry, i've hit more than 14,000!!!!!
Hi girls! Count me in! I have been doing it for a week now. I actually have hit 20000 on weekends! I aim for 15000 a day! How is everyone else doing? Good luck!
Darn. I spent almost an entire day (okay, slight exageration) trying to find this GREAT chart that I printed from the Internet about a year or so ago. It was a progression chart to gradually get you up to 10000+ steps a day. Can't find it... I'll keep looking. I threw it away awhile ago, and the URL went with it.
I think I'll start wearing my pedometer again... you're all doing SO well!!
Hi everyone! I'm glad this thread took off like it did. I am having trouble with my pedometer and am very disappointed with it. Mine is from Bodytronics and it's called "Pro Fit". When I clip it to my short's waistband it gives me way too many extra steps. Last night I was so excited to see that I had walked 10,000 steps but I was suspicious too. I decided to check the pedometer just walking around my house and it was giving me sometimes DOUBLE my actual steps. Even the slightest jiggle would give me extra steps. I am so bummed out by it! I really thought this was going to be my thing.
I went on the bodytronics website and this one would cost you $26.95 or something. It seemed to work o.k. with other pants on so just be careful and check your pedometers once in awhile.
I'm glad so many of you have tried this, I'm hoping to join you again soon.

I remembered to put on my pedometer around 3p.m. today and wore it while doing my watp 4mi. tape. I'm not sure if it registered all the steps (the instructions said it wouldn't while power walking). I got it up to 6600 -- but it only showed about 2 mi. I am hoping to remember to put it on right away in the morning from now on -- will be interesting to see how many steps I actually walk each day.
tama2037, I was wondering what you do for a living?
I am a secretary that sits at a desk all day. Even tho I do WATP tapes 5 days a week (2 or 3 or 4 miles) and even tho I am on my feet the rest of my day (other than work) I don't think I would get in anything close to 10,000 steps.
Just wondered how you spend your day that you are able to get in that many steps.
Hi
I tried a pedometer from Modells and I noticed it wasn't counting all my steps. So I exchanged it for another and noticed the same thing. I noticed it works off a type of pendulum mechanism and since I carry so much weight around my non-existant waist sometimes the waistband would roll when I would sit at my desk. I think my cushiony middle was acting as a shock absorber to that pendulum as I would specifically count the steps and it wouldn't register them all. I bought another but haven't given it a fair shot for fear the same would happen. Any other middle wieghts run into this problem.
I have tried a few brands, they are never exact when I count my own steps. But they do give good averages, you know, like trying to increase your walking maybe 10% over your last day, whatever number it gives you. I am a nurse and wear it 24hr/day so I get about 14000 without even trying, so I probably need to try and increase to 16-18000 for weight loss??? Any one else have this problem?
Some pedometers are more accurate than others. I believe the Digiwalker brand was found to be the most accurate -- costs about $30 at Galyan's, online, and at a few other stores. A few years ago I read somewhere that Accusplit was also a good brand.
Without making any extra effort, I only walk about 4000 steps a day. I add in a short walk on my 2 10-minute breaks and a 1 mile walk on my lunch and I usually get to 8000. I do aerobics every morning so I don't stress if I don't reach 10,000, but I do also walk in the evenings when I have a chance and my kids cooperate. Then I usually reach 12000.
I have bought 2 pedometers both in the $30 range. I was not happy with either. I now use one I got from McD's. It gives me a ball park number. My problem with the other 2 was they would not stay on or in place right. The clip was not very strong so they would move. The one from McD's has a stronger clip and stays put. Personally I don't think any can count every step and not count every movement. They are used to give you a ball park number.
I've been using a pedometer for about two months now. I put it on my nightstand so that I can start using it right out of bed every morning. I bought a $10 one from the grocery store I work at, and it counts steps/miles only. I find that it sometimes works better if I have it clipped to a horizontal pocket on my thigh rather than my waistband. I work in Produce and I am on my feet all throughout my shift. On a busy day at work, plus any extra activities I do in the barn or at home or shopping, I can easily hit 15,000 steps. My all time high was 22,871! My goal is to get higher step counts on my days off, when sometimes I can only achieve ~3,000-5,000 steps.
I enjoy doing this, and like jiffypop, I try to get additional exercise in as well... If I get my 10k steps in during my regular daily life, I feel content for the day. Sometimes I add an extra walk or even a jog in as well! I feel like this allows me to have an occasional snack or two, and I do not feel guitly. We all need to increase our activity levels, that seems to be the real solution. The pedometer is well worth the money folks!
