So, tell me, how is this possible?

  • My husband and I do a weight lifting class together. I started a few months before he did last July (he started in September). I thought at first I could lift more than he could was that I had started earlier.

But, I took a 4 month hiatus this spring/summer from weight lifting. First, because of an injury and second to do landscaping in my yard - and he helped me with some of it, but I did the bulk of it. Anyway, he kept going to class at least once a week - enough to maintain, but not build. We then both went on a month long vacation - during that time we hiked and he swam a lot.

We both started doing the weight lifting class a month ago. I had to drop my weights back a lot for the legs and chest, but by only a little for upper body. He didn't have to drop his weights back. In that month, I've increased my weights each time I go. I am now back to where I was in April with all weights and even higher for upper body. In many body parts I can lift heavier than my husband - squats, shoulders, lunges, biceps. We are the same for triceps and back and abs. He can lift heavier for chest by a little and he can do more pushups on his toes than I can, but I'm gaining on him fast.

Now, he pushes himself to his max and I push myself to my max. Why do I get stronger faster? Is it the type of build I have? The type of muscle structure? our body frames? How is it possible that I can zoom past him on weights like that? he works out other days of the week - more than I do right now.

I kind of like it! But isn't that atypical?

BTW.... he's 6'1" tall, 172 pounds and has a small/medium frame. I'm 5'6.5" tall, 180 pounds and have a large (but not super large) frame.
  • I read elsewhere you got the New Rules for Lifting for Women -- in the 3rd or 4th chapter, the author explains why.

But that's awesome! Good for both of you.

ah! haven't gotten that far yet - I'm really curious to see. I LOVE that we do weights together. He likes it too and fortunately, he's not put off by me being able to lift more than him. He's confident in himself (as he should be).
