  • GGirl - I think your question just comes down to personal preference and geographic location. Personally, I live in SoCal so winter is my running season, I rarely see temps under 30 and I never see snow. So I prefer to have my training cycles in the winter. The summer on the otherhand bring me night time temps of 90 degrees so I sometimes avoid training in the summber, did do a half marathon last August, so I'm begining to train year round. That said most runner do have "seasons" of more running and less running. It just depends on your goals, upcoming races, injuries, etc. So my advice would be to find what is comfortable for you.

I can certainly relate to having run before the family is up, that is when I run too. My alarm is set for 4am on run days and that often isn't early enough, especially during the heart of a training cycle. I don't have a lot of advice here other than try to plan plan plan so that you can get to be early enough to get enough rest for those early runs or try to find other times that work for you to run. IMO sometimes ok to say DH please watch the kids on a Sunday so I can go run, that my "me" time and I think we could all use a little of that.

Good 6 mile easy run today, it was about 35 but I think I was dressed for 25 so I got a little warm. I agree, dressing for cold weather is tough...good run though. I'm really enjoying my move to 3xs a week running, although less days means more milage on the days I do run and I miss those nice little 3 milers, but I think the payoff will be worth it. Got a 6 mile tempo run Friday and a 10 miler Saturday. Training is getting a little tougher and I'm only about 1/3 of the way in, so I'm a little nervous to get into new territory with my milage, but exited.

    Happy running everyone!
  • Hi there! Sounds like everybody's having some fun, or at least trying
Today I completed w5 of c25k! I'm getting pretty excited that I'm so close!
I am now running on a treadmill at a gym. It is a bit boring, but it's not the worst thing in the world. I get my jams goin' and then try to focus on other things.
I am noticing some changes in my legs, they feel stronger. (Whoever said running doesn't help you tone...). I'm contemplating setting a goal of 1,000miles next year in running. I think I'll be able to do it since that's about 20miles a week. 5 days a week now, I walk or jog 3 miles and then get other mileage during the day. We will see though.

Anyway.. hope you're all having a great day! See ya later!
  • I'll join! Even though I'm a little late. I can't believe I just found this section of the forum! My goal for December is to add HIIT to my running 1-2 times a week, and to run 3-5 times a week total. Has anyone tried the HIIT? Did they help your endurance or speed at all?
  • Been getting my 3 times a week in 3 1/2 miles each time... today I did a little over 5 and a mile or so of walking got lost in the cow fields... its cold here too but lovin it! 5 k on Sat Winter Race serries on a moth for 2 months then switch to 1o K...here I come.....
  • Did an easy 4K today. I hadn't planned on running this week (or possibly for a while) but my friend visiting us really wanted to so I couldn't say no

    Musical, welcome!!

In regards to HITT, are you referring to actual HITT (very high intensity, only supposed to be performed for up to 20 or so minutes a couple of times to week, or just interval training? My understanding is the two are often used interchangeably and shouldn't be. Most people who do interval work do fartleks or tempos runs to improve their speed. I don't know about HITT routines for running. ncuneo would be able to better help you

deva your runs sound fun and enjoyable. Good luck on your upcoming 5K!

ncuneo glad training is going well
  • Still congested this morning, but I did 3.25 miles. Took the hilly route for the first time in a long time - my 5K was flat so I'd been focusing on that. First time I made it up the big hill without stopping in so long. It was chilly but it felt great.

deva, you're doing great! I didn't sign up for our local winter run series because I'm a wimp about the weather - figured I will sign up for individual races a few days in advance if there's no rain or snow in the forecast ...

    Musical, great goals!

tdi, cngrats on all your progress so far, and continued success!

    ncuneo, your posts are inspiring.

thinsole, are you going from 5K to 10K? What's the program like?
  • Hi, I'm new, but I'll jump in! I've been running about 20 miles per week, 19.1 this week...last Sun was a half marathon, Tue and Thurs I did 3 easy miles, Sat a 5K, then today 9.3 (it's a loop around the lake where I usually run). I'm going to be off of running for a week, for a bit of R&R after a long training season (two half marathons this season) to rest up for the spring season, which starts at the middle of jan for me. Still trying to decide whether or not to run a half on NYD. If I wait too long, of course, it will be sold out and the decision will be made! ha ha!

Can't wait to get acquainted with y'all!

    Jacki
  • Welcome Jacki!

TDIPRINCESS - 1000 mile goal is awesome! That is my goal this year, I'm getting close. I'm at 958 miles after Saturday's 10 miler. When I started the goal I also thought, ok this is doable 20 mile weeks for a year, but it turned out to be a little more complicated because some weeks you can't make it and for me I was running 4xs a week and then a few weeks ago I actually dropped down to 3xs a week. But I stuck to it and unless something unforseen happens I'll get there.

NAT - Thank you! That really means a lot.

So I'm SUPER annoyed. This weekend I was at a Christmas party and a co-workers wife, who was a runner and aparently a good one, told me her fastest marathon time was 2:15...Um...the olympic record is 2:03 and the women's world record is 2:15, I was so shocked and had a little too much wine I didn't want to start anything by flat out calling her a liar, but I was kinda insulted that she thought I was such a novice she could tell me that. Anywho, I'm trying to give her the benifit of the doubt that she misspoke, but I repeated it back to her in somewhat disbelief and she confirmed...so...she also said she regularly ran 100 mile weeks, won tons of marathons and ran a 1:19 half marathon (6 min miles...)

Anyway! Awesome 10 miler this weekend. Training is moving along and getting serious now - 2-6s and 12 on the docket for this week. Got hills again this week - yuck! Happy running everyone!
  • Had my 5k Sat it was 20 degrees out!!! Beat all my prior times did it in 32:34, we have another 5k in Jan 14 I think and than the one in FEB is a 10k.so am working my way up....We have a 15k in May I turn 60 that month so am planning on that as a celebration.
I am having a bit of an IT band issue in both legs seems to have started with my new shoes and trying to wear my orthotics.....I am going to back off for a week or so as to let them do a little healing and do some cross training. Also am taking a tripso will be gone anyways
    Everyone keep on keeping on!
  • DEVA - STRETCH STRETCH STRETCH!!!!!! I cannot say it enough when it comes to IT and TFL issues. I went through the same thing this year and pretty much self treated myself with stretching, foam rolling and stick massage.
  • natamars- Thank you for the encouragement!
ncuneo- Thank you for the information about 1,000 miles. I was actually thinking about the same thing.. "20 miles a week, that's not bad!" But, then I thought about it a bit more! I think I'll work at it and see how far I get.

Today I completed w6d2 of c25k. It went well. I have switched to counting mileage rather than time. It took longer, but it feels good to be doing it that way instead of saying that I will be able to run 3 miles, I can say that I am! It doesn't matter how long it takes!
Keep up the great work guys!
  • ncuneo: I have been and had been and am still[had a problem from hiking with my right itband several years ago from hiking so I have been leery}.... no running today BUT while walking my dog as you can see he is large 145 lbs I had to hold him back on the leash during a dog seeing episode he yanked me sideways on the one side of the knee IT[ which at least was feeling much better today before]!Than had to limp home 3/4 mile. SO I am now on ice and anti infams and hoping for the best in the morn!!!!
  • Jogged 30 minutes on the treadmill tonight. Did the last mile at a 10 minute mile pace..trying to slowly get to where I can do a 5K in under 30 minutes.
  • deva ITB issues are no joke! Get a foam roller- they are cheap on Amazon. They hurt like heck but are the most effective way to roll out the ITB.

Stretching the ITB is a bit strange because you can't actually feel the ITB being stretched. Runners World and other sites (just google a bit) will help.

You may know all this if you've had a long-term ITB issue but just wanted to make sure. Doing PT for my ITB was invaluable for me. Happy recovery
  • Deva, how often and how far have you been running?
