I'm also a slow jogger. My legs are short and right now I'm not quite up to 5mph, more like 4.5. I told you I was slow! I'd like to work up to 5mph, but not any faster bc I might hurt myself! I'm ridiculously uncoordinated! Lol! So, I just jog 2 miles, 4x a week and I'm very happy with that. I've been in it for the past 4 wks and really do love it. I was a runner before kids (still slow!) and am glad to be back to it!
I am a sometimes walker, sometimes super slow runner. Typical "running" pace for me is 14 minute miles.
Yeah, I'm a speed demon.
I also have terrible body mechanics that leads to poor form. When I run, I look like a lumbering zombie.
With two young kids, sometimes walking is just easier. I can strap the baby on my back and push my toddler in the stroller. And around here, both the mall (early morning) and medical center are walker friendly, so I can do it in air conditioning too.
Ugh it's soooooo hot!! I took yesterday off (just a quick walk to the hosp to visit with a nutritionist)... I can't take today off too, I'm gonna have to brave the boiling temps
i love this thread - i am a WALKER! My bf keeps telling me I can work up to running if I just push myself and start training and I look at him like - why? It hurts my lungs and my boobs, i HATE every minute of it, I feel self-conscious and jiggly and count the seconds until I can stop - compared to where I could walk for hours and be happy.
I am especially obsessed with Incline walking - my favorite right now is cycling btw 4.0-4.5mph and 5-15% incline - feels amazing! Another favorite is stair climbing - we have some tobaggan slides outdoors in a forest where you have to walk up stairs on a steep incline and they are an amazing cardio workout to walk up and down in the summer.
I've always walked a lot, but this year I'm working on the running thing. This spring I finally managed to run a mile without stopping to walk for the first time in my life. I'm another one that runs around 5.0, sometimes I try to take it faster, but then my heart rate gets really high and I can't breathe and I end up having to walk instead. Right now I'm trying to get up to sustaining 5K before I worry about speed (completed Couch to 5K and then quit running for a month).
I like walking a lot. Getting away from my house sets me free, and I'm even more excited to go back to Campus so I can walk even more.
Since I don't have a rec center here, what I do is go on the track and walk/jog. I'm walking with a friend every night because she's a beginner at everything. But when she's not able to come, I do 12 laps (about 3 miles) on the track. I jog the first 4 (though I feel like it's more of a slow jog, yet still tiring ). The next 4 is walk run, run one. The last 4 is walking.
Um - you are awesome! The most I do a day is about 3.3 miles and I'm dying by the end. 6 miles a day = AMAZING!
Thanks lisa!
I started at 3.5 a day in June and MAN was it a struggle... Now that same 3.5 is barely a challenge anymore, so I had to step it up! (no pun intended haha)
I used to run. I started walking, then got into race walking, then eventually getting in to running. Then, my back (degenerative disk disease) took over my life. Running had to be stopped because the pain was just too much. Depression took over and the weight came back. Now I am under strict orders to get the weight off. Running hurts my spine too much. The impact alone hinders my ability to sit comfortably the rest of the day. So, I am back to just walking. I have a lot of exercise equipment and DVDs here at home. I love being outside.
Lately my routine is some strength training on my home gym, cardio on the treadmill which I mix up with Walk Away the Pounds or some other DVD, and I bike ride outside with my fiance almost every day.
My iPhone is full of stretching and video apps. My computer has a program on it to remind me to take exercise breaks. By the end of the day I have done 30 mins.
Now, if I could just eat better the scale might move more. LOL
i've been walker for years.
But I've been starting to train for running. So right now i'm a slow runner. Reallllly slow. But I'm building up my distance first before i worry about my pace.
