I am about to go to the gym and get a membership. I will have a personal trainer as well, I need to loose 45 lbs. I really HOPE I will be able to do it this time and actually go to the gym Hope this place will keep me motivated
I hated the gym - now I go 2/3 times a week and have done for almost 3 years.
Some tips if you're shy about exercising...
Make sure your playlist is fully loaded! Put yourself into your own bubble, everyone else does it too.
Take a book or a magazine and sit on a bike for 30-40 mins. It's quite relaxed and you get distracted. You don't burn as much but it's a good start to getting used to exercising.
Set little challenges to do when you next go... so currently I'll do 5km on the treadmill and my challenge each time is to reduce my time.
I don't find the trainers useful as they set me programmes I'll never stick to, it's best to do a variety of exercises, sometimes doing a long walk/jog on the treadmill, other times doing a class, other times doing a circuit training session. Don't stick to one thing or you'll get bored.
I wish you all the best!
You can do it!
I've always had a hard and I mean HARD time getting started but after I get over myself and all the insecure thoughts in my head - the gym becomes a haven.
I sincerely hope you get a trainer that is sincere in helping you reach your goal!
I'm not a machine working kind of gal (way too boring for me), but I love classes! Way fun! I went to 7 classes last week, plus used the pool 3 times and the tennis courts once. We are so getting our money's worth (now)!

Totally agree that it becomes a haven once the insecurities are over. Not only can I feel the difference when I go (regularly) but also it becomes a way to de-stress after work, think about stuff I have going on, reflect on my weight loss.
Thank you for your words!
Unfortunately the personal trainer I wanted is on vacation until Monday so I'll have to go back then. I am a bit insecure, but I hope all these negative feelings will go away once I start working out regularly. I have seen some before and afters on this site and I was absolutely amazed! Something that seemed so hard became more possible in my eyes I still need to STOP eating so much, I would eat 24/24! This would be the hardest part for me I guess.
Forgot to mention I am a boy and I have 205 lbs (I want to be 160)
city, good for you! Don't be shy about asking the trainer to show you how to manipulate the weights. Literally, I mean stuff like how to adjust the squat rack, adjust the seats, put on a collar, proper "how to" just getting ready to beging to lift.
As soon as you are comfortable using the equipment, the sky's the limit on pushing yourself to be better able to get the most out of the equipment.
All too often, I see trainers do everything for their client. I often wonder if the client ever learns how to do it themselves.
Because I think the goal should be to learn how to lift/exercise, then let the client go off on their own. I wonder if the trainers try to keep the client ignorant so that they feel they can only work out while paying their trainer. I suppose it's good for business, but ultimately, I don't think it's good for the client. In the long run.
Don't be intimidated or shy. It's your health and your money. Use your trainer and learn all you can. Ask why you are doing certain moves, what's the purpose, etc. so that you can learn. A good trainer will enjoy teaching you. Lift free weights and enjoy the rush and growing strength.
As for food, well, we all struggle with it. But, as you noted, there are many success stories. You can be one of them!
