Like some previous posters have referenced, I think the point of the 15 minutes/hour claim is that moving frequently throughout the day is critical for weight loss. This is not to replace a good 1-hour workout at the gym, but to supplement it. Recent students, such as those published in the NYT and other sources, have shown that even people who work out 1- 2 hours a day but sit in front of a computer the rest of the day reap far fewer benefits than people who move throughout the day.
Like someone previously said, this means standing up while watching TV, standing up to cook, walking up the stairs, taking the dog for a walk, walking around the office, etc. Prolonged sitting and inactivity is hugely detrimental even for those who give it their all at the gym!
