February 2008 Walk/Run Challenge

Here it is February already and time to jump in and challange yourself and be supported by others. Walking or running it all counts so come on and join in the fun of becoming fit!

lovnmom 02-01-2008 07:55 AM

If it's alright with everyone here I'd also like to post strength training days as well. I keep wanting to add it to my week, but with no accountability I slip into only doing my miles.

walk/jog 72 miles
9 strength training days of 20 minutes or more

I've gotten a couple dvds from the library that use an exercise ball for pilates and yoga. We've had a ball for years, but really only use it to stretch our backs and sit on at the computer. I haven't worked abdominals or arms in litterally years. It should be quite humorous watching me try to do a crunch while holding the ball above my head lol That may take a FEW tries.
May your skies be sunny and your paths slush free!

YP1 02-01-2008 08:13 AM

6.15/135 I did a warm up, a 4 mile tempo run then a cool down.

project chel 02-01-2008 08:33 AM

I'm shooting for 60 miles this month. It might be kinda pushing it but that's okay. It pretty much means I need to get my rear out of bed early enough to get it in before my husband leaves for work... it'll be good for me. And it will get me ready for it when I finally find a job... so I won't mess all the good I've done so far!

I've decided to run a 5k at an arts festival on May 17th! :carrot:

ennay 02-01-2008 01:01 PM

I am going to put 135 as my goal. My training plan calls for 145 so just a little cushion for those kids-up-all-night-throwing-up days.

L144S 02-01-2008 01:08 PM

I am setting my goal for 75 this month....

jenjen 02-01-2008 01:47 PM

I'm setting my goal for 45 miles this month.

Sandypickle 02-01-2008 08:34 PM

Hi Everyone, I'm new to this thread and I've never publicly committed to a regular exercise program before. So bear with me, please - I don't think I can commit to an entire month. I think I'll try doing this weekly, for now - OK?

I'm a walker and I use a pedometer that counts steps. This week I'll shoot for 7k steps/day, at least 5 days/wk. So between tomorrow, Sat 2/2 and next Sat 2/9 I will walk at least 35K steps.

EZMONEY 02-01-2008 09:06 PM

LOVNMOM you may add anything you want!

Welcome BIRGIT

ENNAy...way to "use" my adopted GRANDkids to "lower" your goals...that is just not right....

L144S 02-01-2008 10:25 PM

Welcome birgit to this corner of 3fc.

LM, add in anything you like to bring you to goal and gary, NO more excusses for you! I say TM (with or without snack) for the super bowl for you :)

I took the day off but put the pedometer back on today and i waled 2 miles just in chores, retrieving kids and sitting on my butt :) i am not counting it.

Dixie and her best doggie friend and her mom and I are headed out for a few hours of hiking tomorrow. I can't wait! I love weekends to take a chunk off my goal because i hate seeing the 0/75.

Night night, tomorrow starts my month.

liligurl 02-01-2008 11:16 PM

Hey all...first off way to go on meeting, making and/or surpassing January goals!!! WOOHOO!!! Way to GO!!!
I am posting a personal challenge of 100 miles this month, I've done it in the past, so hoping this time around I can surpass it...most of it will be logged outdoors, as I have a 10K race on Feb. 24th, conditioning the lungs now for the cold temps.

L144S...I live in the SNOW, ICE, & SLEET belt of MA.
You know north and west of 495, lucky me!!!!!!! (Leominster/Fitchburg area)

cakses 02-01-2008 11:56 PM

Well I surpassed last month's 40 so this month I will try for 45 with 2 less days in the month. I'm sure it can be done.

1.5 today, more to come this weekend!

1.5/45

lovnmom 02-02-2008 07:38 AM

I did 91 miles last month even though my goal was 50, so I think it's time to up that!!! February is a bit shorter than January, so I'll set my goal at 90 miles - that's basically a little better than last month, and last month was a great running month for me so it'll be a struggle.

Good luck to everyone with their goals - WE CAN DO IT!

project chel 02-02-2008 12:17 PM

3.5 miles this morning.
3.5/60

Birgit~ you'd be surprised with yourself, I think. It's amazing what we can do with the right state of mind and good support!

I'm so impressed with everyone for doing so good and reaching and going over their goals last month!!!:carrot:

ennay 02-02-2008 01:07 PM

7.33 in the snow

7.3/135

Scenestealer 02-02-2008 02:25 PM

5 miles roundtrip run to go pick up my race packet/t-shirt for tomorrow's 4 mile race. I need to run 3.1 miles every day in February to meet my goal, so this and tomorrow's race will put me on track since I biked yesterday instead of running.

5.0/90

L144S 02-02-2008 07:22 PM

9 miles on my hike today, lots of slushy snow, but it was so beautiful in the woods today. Going again tomorrow!

9/75

alinnell 02-02-2008 07:36 PM

I doubt I'll make the same 53 miles I did in January. I think I'll bring it down to 40 or perhaps 45. I also will probably only post my miles weekly.

2 miles

2/40

liligurl 02-02-2008 11:56 PM

Finally some nice running weather...4 miles today...I took tomorrow off (work) to stay home and watch the Patriots win the Super Bowl...I will be out and running early tomorrow, hoping to get in 6 by lunchtime.

Dixie ~ that sounds so great!

L144S 02-03-2008 01:27 PM

7 mile hike today. I need to get some winter hiking boots as my bean boots are just not made for that kind of walking. my feet hurt,
BUT We went to another state park today, lots of hills, snow and water!

Sandypickle 02-03-2008 01:47 PM

Hello Everyone, and thank you all for the rousing welcome and encouragement.

L144S - thanks for doing the math for me. 70 miles in Feb, huh? yowzah... But you're right - it's probably not impossible to do. One day and one step at a time...

Just finished a 2.5 mile walk with my doggie and so far for the day my pedometer reads 6200 steps. Since it's only 1:45pm, I'm pretty sure I won't have trble meeting my 7k commitment for the day.

ennay 02-03-2008 02:12 PM

13.2 today

20.5/135 off to a good start!

L144S 02-04-2008 10:58 AM

I'm back in it this month!! :carrot:

I'm setting my goal at 35 miles.

lovnmom 02-04-2008 01:02 PM

L, I'm hearing you on enjoying the snowy walks. A friend and I did 4.5 this morning. It snowed really hard, but by the second mile the wind had died down and it was just beautiful. The snow covered even our eyelashes. It actually snowed more than 2 inches in the hour+ we were out there! Everything just felt clean and crisp. I had driven to her rural home to walk a loop we enjoy. Yes, it was already snowing when I left. On my way home there were 2 cars and a tractor pulling a manure spreader in the ditches!!! My guardian angel really worked overtime today. I'm hoping to do 3 more yet today, but now it's raining.

Didn't post yesterday, but I did a 4 mile race and then also opted to walk home from a brunch instead of taking the subway (0.9 miles).

9.9/90

lovnmom 02-04-2008 05:02 PM

3 more on the TM. It's done, but I'm hating that machine ugh!

Good evening, All -

Don't quite know how I did this today, but according to my step counter I'm up to 9k steps - without even really trying. Guess taking the longer, more scenic route to work in the morning is paying off :D

Be well, Everyone -

liligurl 02-05-2008 01:21 AM

Hey all, I managed to get in 12 miles over the past 2 days...
16/100

dream710 02-05-2008 09:05 AM

Hi, I'm new to 3FC and so far I'm loving this site. Everyone is so positive and helpful. I'm up for a challenge so I'm going to try to do 75 miles by the end of this month. I haven't been real motivated so I'm hoping this challenge will help me. :tread:

L144S 02-05-2008 01:19 PM

:wel3fc: Johnson. and :welcome3: to the cahllange!

johnson67 02-05-2008 01:47 PM

Thanks for the warm welcome. If I figured it right I will have to walk 3 miles every day for the rest of the month. I walked 1.75 this morning and plan on going home and walking at least 2 more. :?:Can anyone tell me how much of an incline I should be doing? I have been walking the treadmill for awhile but I don't know if I should be walking with an incline the whole time or what. Thanks in advance for all your help.

YP1 02-05-2008 02:18 PM

6.5 this morning - 15.6/135

L144S 02-05-2008 04:46 PM

Johnson, I think it can be fun to try a program on your TM and see what works best for you with the incline. I don't love the TM so I am sure others will chime in on how to increase the incline as you get more fit.

As for the 3 a day. it is a great goal. i find since I walk outside some days I do more and somedays less and sometimes, like today with a TON of rain and a really full day that I will skip a day, but that is life and making exercise wok into your plan.

Sandypickle 02-05-2008 07:35 PM

Hi Johnson - glad you're here! Sorry, I know nothing about treadmills so can't help you.

Sounds like everyone is right on track. Great going, Friends!

I did a 2 mile WATP DVD this morning cuz it was raining pretty hard outside and I couldn't walk. Counting that as 4k steps, I'm up over 9.5k steps for the day. I might even reach 10k today before I go to bed. I'm pretty excited by that.
