There is a great book called Living Well with Hypothyroidism that explains the different types of the condition and the different drugs used to treat it. One of the persistent themes is that most doctors order a handful of standard tests which don't always catch the condition. Then, if they do catch it, they tend to prescribe synthroid which, as many people have noted, does not help everyone. If you are hypothyroid or think you might be, this is an incredibly valuable book to read.

Hi gals. I was just diagnoised with hypo. I was at a level of almost 9 when I started with 25mg of synthroid about 8 weeks ago. It was upped to 50 on Monday. I had all the other T3's and T4's test run. Didn't ask what the numbers were. I can not go on a higher protein diet. I have a major problem with kidney stones. But I am trying to limit the simple carbs these days. (I am 25 pounds higher than any of my pregnancy weights) My fasting blood sugar is fine, my cholesteral is great. I am not getting a period anymore, this all started about 6 months ago. I turn 35 and I fall apart. Anyways, I just wanted to say hi and let you know I found this thread very enlightening!
