  • Good Morning . . . and it is . . . still warm and sunny, but boy oh boy, so much less humid. Thank you Ontario and all other parts west of here for sending me some relief.

Other than that, SSDD for me . . . see you later . . .
  • Hi Ladies

It has been a day for catching up on all those chores wanted to continue with the laundry but I may have broke the washing machine I put to much wash powder in the drum . It was not my normal detergent I use but a non biological variety that I have to use to wash our coats. I did not read the instructions on how much to use foolishly so when I looked there was millions of bubbles in the washing machine. We in the UK have front loading machines rather than top loaders. Well it stopped working and now it will not go. I hope that if I give it a while to dry out it will fix the problem and that bubbles have found there way on to sensors maybe. SO fingers crossed that I have not messed it up. The only good thing is that it is under insurance so if I have broke it at least it will get fixed.

It would break down with 2 coats in so i had to try and rinse them out by hand. Needless to say I ended up soaked and cursing my stupidity. I have learnt my lesson well and truely that I should read instructions more

The strawberry and raspberry picking when very well yesterday. Good job that we did it in the morning as the heavens opened in the afternoon and did not stop all evening from that point. I even had to walk the dog in the rain not much fun .

Managed to wash Rizzie today not that he thought much to it. Then washed his dog blanket from the car and got that dry so that smells heaps better. Striped the bed and remade it as well. So most of my chores have been completed except 2 more loads of washing. One for the tee shirts and the other for the towels. Put the hoover round as well. So today has been one of more productive days with energy so I am making the most of it.

Time to say goodbye as I have no more news at present so take care ladies till next time
  • HELLO CHICKIES ~ been taking it easy today; seems I needed a good rest day. It rained until late afternoon, so the laundry will have to wait, but the sun did come out and we had a lovely sunset (which I took pics of) ...

We mostly put stuff away today; in closets and storage and such so something did get accomplished. I was happy to see that my flowers, the stuff in my drums, and the garden are doing quite well, esp with all the rain we had over the last while, so we didn't have to worry about them getting enuff after all.

HEY PURPLE ~ sorry to hear that your washer is on the fritz, but hopefully when it dries out, it will be OK. Gee, I didn't know there was such a thing as 'washing machine' insurance. You still did well to get so much done in one day. I tend to overdo it and then pay with pain and fatigue afterwards. Had to put my legs up today (which I am supposed to do anyways).

Glad your fruit picking expedition went well yesterday. I came in to read, and catch up on my emails that piled up while we were away (still have a few to go through yet). DH's brother called becuz he wondered where we had been for almost two weeks.

The funniest thing happened while we were away: the neighbours were telling everyone that we had moved becuz they saw us taking stuff out of our place (but it was just going to the cottage). Ha Ha: joke's on them ... we came back!!! So we had to set the record straight ... again; can't tell you how many times this has happened while living here. I think some people have way to much free time on their hands ~ LOL! We had a good chuckle about it though ...

HIYA VAL ~ I am trying to get back into the swing of things esp with my eating plan: had fish for dinner tonight with salad and veggies. Had strawberries for dessert. I told DH today that I don't want to see any junkies in the house for the next ... year! And he agreed whole heartedly, so we'll try our best to be good when we go shopping next week.

Gotta pick up some more veggies and fruit then too. DH got a bunch of GOLDEN OLDIE tapes while on holidays: our nice BIL bought them for him at a yard sale (very generous of him). He's listening to them right now on his stereo; I can hear them through the wall ~ LOL! They also went fishing and both of them caught some this time; BIL rented a boat and they had good time. Then I cooked the fish up for us for dinner.

    MEOWEE ~

Well, it's time to go have my tea; just wanted to get in here and post. We've been trying to catch up on everything that went by the wayside while we were gone: grass cutting, watering, pruning, weeding, and so on. Hope everyone is feeling well and having a wonderful weekend. Take care, your friend ROSEBUD
  • Hi Ladies

It appears it going to be a nice day today so I have taken advantage of it. Phew a sigh of relief and a pray of thanks regarding the washing machine as it is working now it has dried out. So I have washed the rest of the washing plus a throw-over that resides on our bed. so hopefully the nice weather will dry all this laundry that I have just put out.

ROSEBUD I think every neighbourhood has what I call twitching curtain syndrome people They seem to know everyones else's business and also add up 2+2 and get 5 as in your case

When you purchase new items over here most of them you can take an insurance out on them which we do if it is an expensive item like the cooker or washing machine. The monthly insurance is just a few pounds but can be worth their weight in gold if something should go wrong with it. The insurance also replaces like for like or the next nearest model if it is no longer made if it can not be repaired. So it can be worth while thinking about taking these out if you can afford to. I do it for all my goods which are expensive to replace or repair that way it gives me piece of mind.

We also do not have any junk in the house that way you are not tempted to go there when you are hungry or have the nibbles. We have some low calorie ice-creams and rice cakes (sweet variety for my DH). That way if we do go raiding it is not too bad on the old waist line. We find little and often works quite well. Plus planning what your going to have for the day or next few days that stays within our plan. It may mean juggling around a bit your menu but it is worth it. We when we go shopping look at the labels of things before we buy anything new so we do not get stung unawares.

Yesterday we were a bit naughty as DH was so craving cake that I made a very small one that was fat free and used half and half sugar. Plus just put less sugar jam in for the filling. Well it seemed to hit the spot and we were not over by much on the calorie intake by tweaking what we ate for the rest of the day.

Today we are have a lean piece of steak with vegetables lots of them to fill up as per usual. Then we are having strawberries for afterwards with natural yogurt (sweetened with sweetener to your own personal taste and with a little vanilla essence or extract) very nice refreshing dessert for DH sweet tooth.

Time for me to make tracks in the kitchen else I will never get any dinner on the table. So bye for now ladies and take care
  • Good Morning . . .

PURPLE . . . glad the washer has self-corrected. Around here, most stores offer an extended warranty option on large purchases like major appliances so you can about double or sometimes even triple the manufacturer's warranty period for little additional cost. Only covers manufacturing defects though so not nearly as good as a true insurance type of thing.

ROSEBUD . . . so glad you had a good time and that you got to "surprise" the nosey neighbours again.

Another gorgeous day here in northern Nova Scotia. I'm just waiting for my hair to dry and then I'm going out to play. . . Hope everybody else has a great day, too.
  • HELLO CHICKIES ~ hope you're all having a lovely Sunday. We had a mixed bag of weather today; sun, rain, windy like a storm, rain, and then sun again. I like the breeze as it pushes the skitters away; the last couple of days have been pretty good.

HEY PURPLE ~ that's great that your washer is working again. Like MEOWEE says, we have warranties and extended warranties here, but I haven't had to use too many. I can see why you would want to replace a big ticket item (hence the insurance). Most large items here last a while, but every now and then you get a dud. I remember the days when large appliances would last 20-30 years with hardly any problems at all.

That's cute: TWITCHING CURTAIN SYNDROME! In Canada, we call it something else (see MEOWEE's post) On some Sundays, I make a small dessert; gotta enjoy life too. One serving shouldn't break the calorie bank. Your dinner sounds great. We had roasted chicken with veggies like yams, long green beans, carrots, and small new potatoes again (gotta have this at least once a month as it's one of my favorites).

THANKS MEOWEE ~ yah, we had a good laugh over the 'nosey' neighbours and their antics ...

HI VAL ~ hope you are having a great weekend; and that you have a good week coming up too!

Well, time for tea, so take good care ladies ~ your friend ROSEBUD
  • Hi Ladies and good morning

At the moment it is very cloudy outside but it is not suppose to rain so the weather people say I have tempted fate and put out a blanket I washed. I thought I would try over the next few days to wash those big items that you do not wash each week. So now I have it pegged on the line I have to keep a close eye outside so that it is not undoing my handy work.

Not sure if I will have time to post on here tomorrow as it is my busy day with being at the tank for my therapy and also waiting for DH whilst he has his training on the tanks. Not sure when you pass as an operator but I am sure it will not be too long.

    MEOWEE

No not as good the type of insurance you take out on goods but better than nothing. Especially as they are not built like years ago when thing would last much longer.

I hope you had a nice Sunday yesterday when you went out to "play" Lets hope it was not too hot to enjoy sometime outside.

    ROSEBUD

It is also called "nosey neighbour" here when somebody is constantly at the window. When I was growing up their was a lady who was a retired school teacher and she was forever at the window to the point she gave you the creeps ( made you feel uneasy). I think now she was possibly lonely and it was her was of dealing with it as she had lost her husband.

Yes appliances did last much longer when I was younger. Though we live now in a throw away society rather than a make do and mend. When I was growing up there was shops all over to take various goods to be mended. There were several dress making shops as well for material, buttons, ribbons and lace etc but none of those exist now in my birth town. There is a stall on the market that sells buttons and ribbons etc. Another which sells material especially for the Asian saris. There is a big department stall in the shopping centre which sell material and accessories but at a price. My mum made all my clothes virtually when I was growing up as it was cheaper to do so. Now most parents are trying to buy designer labels for children that are not in them for 5 minutes.

Not got a clue at the minute what to make for dinner so I will have to put my thinking cap on and come up with something simple and quick for that matter. Then I will have to plan the menu around for the day around that. I normally do it at least the night before but plans changed this morning for today so I have had to think more on my feet which I hate I love to be so organised.

Time to go and look around the store cupboard and freezer for dinner ideas. So bye for now but first hello to VAL and hope your well. Take care everyone and look after yourselves
  • Good Morning . . . . . . well, it actually isn't since our heat and humidity levels are on the rise again and my weight and blood sugar are both trying to keep up. Oh well . . . in the overall scheme of things . . . today is hardly a ripple worth worrying about.

Hope the rest of you have great weather . . . and get to do some fun stuff.
  • HELLO CHICKIES ~ we had a full day of shopping and paying bills and running errands today. I sure got lots of walking in; think I did a 5K just today. My legs sure were complaining by the time I got home ...

We had a mix of sun and small spirts of rain all day: seems Mother Nature couldn't make up her mind what she wanted to do. One minute, it was cool and breezy; and the next sunny and hot. Oh well, nothing to whine about really. We managed to get everything done that we wanted.

GOOD NEWS NOTE: DH was thrilled that a young mechanic was able to fix his compressor engine for him today. This young man lost an arm in an accident, but hasn't let that stop him. He had DH's engine fixed in only 30 minutes; DH was quite impressed as he used to do that kind of work in the past as well. And of course, that saved us having to buy a new compressor. I'm so glad this company is giving challenged kids like that a chance to prove themselves.

HEY PURPLE ~ We picked up some spit BBQ chicken today; just love it and had it for our lunch. This is a much healthier alternative to the usual fare. So we are just having a light dinner tonight. I have a basic weekly menu plan that I use, but sometimes it gets changed becuz of circumstances too:

SUNDAY ~ roasted chicken with lots of veggies and new potatoes
MONDAY ~ pork chops with rice and veggies and salad
TUESDAY ~ fish with veggies and salad and home fries
WEDNESDAY ~ lean hamburg dish with pasta
THURSDAY ~ baked chicken (ie BBQ or mushroom sauce) with rice and veggies
    FRIDAY ~ steak with mushrooms/onions/corn/salad
SATURDAY ~ optional day of sausages or jumbo franks or lite h/m pizza*

    * NOTE ~ Optional day could be anything you want; maybe even homemade soup or stew with biscuits; chili; an omelette, beans, or dinner out ...

MEOWEE ~ hopefully that humidity will sail away and you'll have a nice week. We have lots of work to do; checking the garden and catching up on laundry, but we also do some things we like at least part of the day.

HIYA VAL ~ hope your apartment is coming along and you are having a good week so far; or are you on one of your planned trips yet??? I cannot remember when they all are; I just know that you had some planned for this summer.

WELL, DH is bugging me to come out and have a late lite dinner and tea; so I'll go join him. Take care, your friend ROSEBUD
  • I got back from cirque du soleil yesterday

BUT OH MAN have I been sick the last week!

I've decided I have un diagnosed IBS. Fatty foods seem to trigger it.. so I just avoid all that stuff.. kind of a blessing really to have such motivation. BUT on my trip I was constantly sick. I kept looking at what I was eating... which was basically nothing and I was sooo confused why my drugs werent working for the spasms.

Sat for 3 hours. saw a doc. Took the px in.. turned out he gave me a drug not available in Canada. BUT he gave me some insight. Caffeine is a stimulant. -duh= and its probably the reason I'm sick now. I've been chugging the stuff like none other all summer... partially as a treat and partially because it keeps my appetite down. Guess I'll have to find another way to manage.

Ummmm what else. It's really messed with my sleep cycle.. so I was in bed at 8:30 last night and was awake at 5 today. Now I need stuff to do!

Rosebud - your weekly menu looks so yummy. Now I remember why I should cook! It has been rainy here too...

Purple - I saw your post on the WLS forum... it actually reminded me to check over here. How are you doing?

Meowee hope today is more managable for you

ok.. I need to go out there.. do some living and not be sick. Sorry for the sick descriptors... my brain is so tired.. and I just ate so I'm paranoid about waking up in severe pain but hey... gonna go try to sleep again...

EDIT - oh hey on the drive back north we stopped at 'Little Limestone Lake'.. it's the world's largest marl lake. and it's SO BEATUIFUL. it was this milky turquoise colour when we stopped there (unheard of for a mb lake!)... so I took a picture. more info here; http://www.gov.mb.ca/conservation/pa...one/index.html
  • Good Morning . . .

Another steamy day for us . . . with thunderstorms predicted for the afternoon . . . Oh well. At least the Blood sugar and the weight were acceptable this morning. Looks like this is shaping up to be a 'maintainance month'. I seem to be chasing the same pound or two up and down the scale. At least that's better than just watching it go up.

Glad you are home safely VAL and sounds like you got some great advice from that doctor. I'm very careful about high fat foods too . . . they tend to give me horrendous heartburn problems as well as a bit of the 'runny tummy syndrome'. Caffeine can definitely trigger both of those too.

See you all later, gang . . . keep things moving and shaking . . .
  • Hi Ladies

I have managed to find a little time to come and post in this thread before going out. I always have a busy day on Tuesday plus getting up early which my body is not so fond of

    VAL

So sorry to hear about that fact you have been so poorly. I can understand how you feel. About 13 years ago I was in a pretty bad way in what I can only describe as being in a revolving door. I could never find a happy medium I was either taking laxatives or having to take anti diarrhoea tablets. In the end I went to the doctor to get the issue sorted out. I was prescribed mebeverine one three times a day. Like you have have trigger foods which I have to take in very small quantities one of which is milk strangely enough. I am now 13 years down the line. I do not take my tablets every day now only when I feel that I have a bout coming on. At least it is manageable and no longer in that revolving door.

Read as much information as you can glean about IBS to help you make better choices and prevention is next best thing to cure. I wish you a speedy recovery from this and hope your soon back to your old self again. If you really enjoy your coffee and are happier with it. Try switching to the decaff variety as I have done and decaff tea for that matter.

Thanks for asking how I am doing I am slowly getting myself back to normal but the balance is slow at coming back. I look like I have been swigging on the hard stuff Though in myself I am feeling not too bad. I had a fair amount of energy this weekend so was able to put that to good use and do all the laundry + house hold chores. It felt good to be able to do these things even if I looked a bit ungainly doing them.

    MEOWEE

Feels like we could be in for a thunderstorm today as it so humid and sticky. My DH is in the same position as you and has been for the last 6 months he has lost and gained the same 2 pounds. He can not seem to break the plateau that he seems to be on. If I lessen the calorie intake he is hungry he pans in around 1900 to 2000 per day and is 225. I think he feels so disheartened at times as it has steadily dropped off me while he has remained static for 1/2 a year now.

Very true if you do not lose any weight I try and regard those times as practice for maintenance which at some point I will be in that zone. So a bit of practice now and then does not harm.

    ROSEBUD

Nice looking menu I must say making my mouth water just looking at it When you cook for yourself you have endless variety and chance to try different dishes that you have never ventured to have before. That way you end up with so much variety in your diet it less likely you will become bored and plus I love experimenting. Poor DH thinks he is a guinea pig with the endless new things we have tried in the past year or so. Some have been really successful where as others well lets say we chalk them up to experience

Good for you on your exercise even if it was having to pay bills I think when you have tasks in mind to do you do not realise how far you have exactly walked. Far more than if you just did a plain straight walk.

On Thursday we are going to Dorset to a castle with a festive on to deliver beanbags. Though this is going to be a long journey to say the least at least 10 hours drive there and back. That is because we are situated in the midlands or middle of England and this is South getting towards the English Channel which separates us from the rest of Europe. It appears that it is nearly all motorway travel which makes it slightly easier.

Time for me to get a move on so bye for now and take care
  • Hi gang . . .

Another hot and sticky one . . . . . . one difference today -- it's also sunny and I'm not sure that's a good thing under the circumstances.

Hope everybody else gets a great summer day and has lots of fun stuff to do. See you all later . . .
  • Hi Ladies

Been doing the weekly shopping list and I studiously did my shopping list on a piece of paper to take with me to remind me of the items I needed. What did I do forgot to bring it with us when we went shopping So needless to say I had to do it from memory which one can only describe as a colander because of the things I forget now days. On coming back I took a look at the list well I did not do too bad and the things that I have forgotten I can last until next time as they were not urgent items as such.

Tomorrow is my eldest nieces birthday and she will be 15, 15 where does time fly it does not seem five minutes since I could hold her in the palm of my hand. She was born 6 weeks premature but had been given steroids to aid with her lungs so she did very well indeed. She was a great birth weight for one so early she was 4lb 4oz. All but one of my nieces (i only have one sibling my sister) have an Irish name (4 of them) Though one has been Anglicized (think this is how it is spelt) so its spelling is how it sounds rather than the Irish spelling which appear very different. Their father comes from Northern Ireland and he still has a lot of family who remain there. They will be going over in August to see his parents who are now a great age of well into their 80's (nearer 90 if truth be known) In true Irish style they had a big family of 10 living siblings and I think she lost a couple when they were very young. Wow fancy raising such a big family now that takes total dedication and I do not think I would be cut out for it. ( not very maternal and never had been) I have enjoyed being an Auntie though to my nieces and also to my DH family of nieces and nephews

Well tomorrow is going to be an exceptionally long day so I will being going to bed super early to get as many hours sleep as I can. I have already prepared our food for the day well the sandwiches, fruit and drinks. Though will stop for a hot meal somewhere along the way as we have been given some money for lunch. We are going to Dorset as I said yesterday to the castle there. DH in about an hours time will be going to pick up the van from the hire company and have it filled with bean bags by his brother and sister. We will sleep in the other bedroom tonight in the front of the house and the van will be parked right up to that.

Bye for now and take care everyone till next time
