100 Mile October Challenge

My sister (we'll call her Biker Chick :D) threw down the gauntlet and challenged me to a "Walk 100 Miles in October Challenge." I challenged Jennifer, and she suggested we recruit anyone who feels up to the challenge. Ya game? Join in and post your daily, weekly or whatever mileage you feel like posting. :tread:

Come on, let's make this October a ...
"WALK-tober." :dancer: :dancer: :dancer: :dancer:
Wow, I just made that up off the top of my head.

:goodluck:

**Jennifer** 09-29-2004 04:54 PM

Woo Hoo! I am in, in a big way! Gotta move this keister of mine!

C'mon chickies....we've got to exercise, so we may as well have some motivation.

October 1- the gloves come off, and the sneakers go on!

I like that- Walktober!

gabwill 09-29-2004 06:50 PM

I am in. I would love to walk that much next month. This month I did half of that since the middle of the month so should be able to keep up. That would be good and helpful to me.

miss_elisha 09-29-2004 08:21 PM

Well, for what it's worth, I'm in, but only for the sheer amount of exercise part. I'll be on a stairclimber most of the time, 15 minutes = 1 mile.

Let's raise the bar this month, chicks!

Walktober--that's good!

lisa girl 09-29-2004 11:01 PM

Count me in!! Thanks for starting this thread Mary!!

hikein2005 09-30-2004 06:34 AM

I want to join in...

this is a great challenge! I already posted on the main thread that I thought this was inspirational to me. My goal for walking/cycling is 50 miles each, so that's 100 miles!!!

Thanks for setting this up Mary!

lisa girl 09-30-2004 08:05 AM

o.k. !!! The good news is that I found my pedometer! Yay! And, I have a question...The miles that I get on the pedometer..I do add that in my signature as part of my exercise, right? Or do I just count the time I "exercised" ?

**Jennifer** 09-30-2004 08:13 AM

I'd say to count it in your mileage...it all adds up.

I gotta find my pedometer- I thought I knew where it was, but I was wrong! LOL

Gotta brush off my sneakers tonight, and start off the month with a bang in the morning :)

dlzbth 09-30-2004 08:46 AM

Ok, Ok, you twisted my arm

Count me in too! :D

Donna

lauren2pink 09-30-2004 01:35 PM

As long as I can walk it on the treadmill, I'm in... can't walk outside due to allergies/asthma though!

-Lauren

**Jennifer** 09-30-2004 02:59 PM

outdoor walks count, treadmill counts, steps count, WATP counts, and stepper "mileage" counts. Anything else that we need to look at considering? I think we've covered most of the bases.

lauren2pink 09-30-2004 09:59 PM

LOL! Great - I'm in!

sparked 10-01-2004 12:21 PM

I'm in. I need to get moving starting TODAY!!!

miss_elisha 10-01-2004 11:36 PM

Woohoo! Has everyone started their 100 yet? I have! Only 2 today, but today's only day 1!

Do we get a prize or something if we reach 100 first? We could be crowned Queen of the 100-Mile Challenge or the Walktober Champion or something.

Ok, I'm just being goofy now. Time for sleep. Nighty night chicks!

squabb56 10-03-2004 02:15 AM

Time to catch up.......

Hi

May I join, too? :^:

:yes:I'm in serious need of some motivation to get my butt in gear.

Oct 1 - 0
Oct 2 - 2 miles

:yikes: Time to catch up.......

**Jennifer** 10-04-2004 10:24 AM

Joy, of course you can join in! Glad to have you with us!

Elisha, prizes??? We'll have to harass Mary & see. ;) I think we can twist her arm. I might just have to make a crown avatar for the winner to gloat with. :D Or for our signature lines, for everyone who makes it to the 100 miles.

I got 3 miles in over the weekend with Mom, and even though I slept in this morning, I'll be on track this afternoon for at least 2 miles. Gotta be sure I get up in the morning & can get a mile or 2 in before work. Plus, Mom gave me a new pedometer this weekend, since I still couldn't find mine. I just need to program it this morning & get it strapped on. LOL.

I'll check in with my added mileage tonight!

dlzbth 10-04-2004 12:28 PM

not much time but had to post. :)

I :tread: walked(actually jogged again :) ) 1.1 on the treadmill just now and probably walked at least one over the weekend in the mountains. Didn't have a pedometer so don't really know so I'll not count that and say I have 1.1 miles to my chart right now.

Donna

**Jennifer** 10-04-2004 03:28 PM

Woo Hoo! I've logged 3343 steps so far- and that included a mile walk on my lunch break. I went over to the park & walked around the perimeter of the parking lot, trying to stay under the trees. Note to self: Moron, remember to put sneakers in your car. wrenching your ankle again trying to walk in heels is stupid, and will put you out of commission if you don't watch it.

Tonight I'm planning on 2 miles WATP (done without the pedometer) and I'll strap it back on when we do the grocery shopping. I think for me, 10,000 steps a day is going to be a challenge in itself. I'm going to do this! :)

Go Donna! :D You & that jogging & Mary's Jo-wuffling- you chickies are kicking my patootie!

How's everyone else coming with their mileage?

And, I've got half a mind to try to beat all of you chickadees!... tee hee

That's if I can stop hitting snooze on my alarm clock and get my round butt up in the morning.. LOL

Hello to all... and good luck

Lisa

hikein2005 10-04-2004 10:06 PM

Got 2.25 miles in tonight. Had a great walk in the cool fall evening! Yipee! I'm on my way! I plan to get another 1.5 in the morning before work and then hit the bike for a few tomorrow night! That's my plan anyway!

Now...to get on track with eating!!!!

miss_elisha 10-04-2004 10:57 PM

Yay! Another 3 miles for me! That makes 5 total for the month for me, with more on the way in the morning. I need a pedometer so I can keep track of my steps during the day! Today I would have logged about 3 steps, but I walk a *lot* at work, but I don't track it, so it doesn't count. Otherwise these 100 miles would be in the bag. *sigh*
I might have to look into that. It seems like you all have an advantage over me. It's not fair! *stamps her feet*

Oh dear, it's time for me to sleep now, I'm getting cranky. I'll check in tomorrow with an updated mileage report. Have a good night.
~Elisha

squabb56 10-04-2004 11:39 PM

Hmmmm .... nothing to report for Sunday, Oct.4th. :nono:

Today I went to the gym and water ran for 45 minutes. My knees have been feeling the strain of the recall on VIOXX. I figured 15 minutes should equal about 1 mile (same as stair climber). What do you think? If okay, mark me down for 3 miles today

Total to date is 5 miles.

Everyone is doing so well, I'm really going to have to get my butt in gearwork to be in the running (pun intended) for the prize. :smug:

:-J

**Jennifer** 10-05-2004 09:17 AM

Elisha, is there a sporting goods store nearby? If all else fails, get one of those horrid McDonalds Go Active meals & get a pedometer in that. I got my first one on ebay pretty cheap.

Joy, yup, you've got the conversion right! :) Way to go with the 5 miles!

Yesterday, outside of the WATP, I logged 4531 steps, for 2.15 miles, and that counts a 1.25 mile walk at lunch. I'm in such a small office that 10,000 steps a day would ne very hard to reach, so I am looking at 5000 steps, and doing 2-3 miles WATP each day.

233 steps in so far since I got to work, so that's not too bad.

Walk on, chickies!

miss_elisha 10-05-2004 09:41 AM

Log two more miles for me! That's 7 total! Woo!

There is a sporting goods store nearby, and the local WalMart is in the mall I work at, and I usually end up wandering around there on my lunchbreak anyway, so I'll probably check there first. I just don't have a bunch of money to spend on it right now. Well, ever. Stupid security clearance that takes *FOREVER*! (I'm getting a little aggravated about that, in case you didn't notice.) Anyway, I'll probably just get a little cheapy one, at least for now. I don't think the McDonald's version is a good idea, simply because I would have to actually go to McDonald's, and I'm not the best at resisting temptation, so let's just say that plan has it's drawbacks. When I start making some real money I'll probably invest in a fancy one, but right now, that's just not practical.

I'll work it out. Possibly before work today, more likely during lunch.

Ok, speaking of work, I need to get my butt in gear. Have a great day!
~Elisha

gabwill 10-05-2004 06:45 PM

well so far for me I have 3 miles done (including one mile of running) That looks good to me. I may go out and walk timnight but I am not entirely sure. Did alot of cleaning today with washing down walls and stuff, I don't have the energy but may tonight once the little one goes to bed. I am hoping to do about 2-3 more miles then but we will see.

dlzbth 10-05-2004 08:15 PM

I was planning to jog/walk on treadmill 2 miles today but because of circumstances out of my control only got in 1.4 in. So, that is 2.5 miles so far. WTG, Gabrielle!
:dancer: :cp:

hikein2005 10-05-2004 09:12 PM

Walking today

was not NEAR as much as I had planned!

I walked this morning for about 15 minutes, so I'm guessing it was just a little under a mile, so I'm counting .75 miles for today! I'm hoping...no wait...PLANNING that tomorrow will be better! I'm going for 2 miles in the morning come he** or high water!!!

You all are kicking some serious butt...Gabrielle...I'm proud of you!!

miss_elisha 10-06-2004 07:49 AM

So I got a pedometer yesterday during my lunch break, just a cheapy little Walmart one, but it's better than nothing. I put it on when I went back to work at 5:00pm, and I logged 6216 steps by the time I sat down in front of my computer last night around 11. I think that's pretty good. (I told you I walked a lot at work!) I haven't measured my stride yet, so I don't know how far that is, but it's at least 1 mile, probably closer to 2. I'll measure sometime today, then add it to my total.

With this pedometer, 100 miles should be no problem whatsoever. However, I'm still going to do as much as I can on the stairclimber, or actually walking for exercise rather than just walking around. I'm going to try to get the bf to do some walking with me this weekend so I don't fall too far behind, and also because I know food isn't going to be the best.

Anyway, I've got jet. Keep on walking, sistahs!
~Elisha

**Jennifer** 10-06-2004 08:47 AM

Well, holy crap, Elisha! 6200 in only half a day of wearing it? This 100 miles is definitely going to be a lot easier, now. Luckily we're tall so we have a little longer stride & have that little bit of advantage. :)

Ok, I got 5030 steps in yesterday, for 2.38 miles on the pedometer. WATP fell short, thanks to ankle swelling from my stupidity on Monday. No chance to walk in the park at lunch today, so I'm going to have to find something to do to keep trying to get those steps in.

Gotta update my total & check in on the other threads... Happy Hump Day, chickies!

lil2sweet5 10-06-2004 09:37 AM

Made it Through the Park (Well Almost)

I made it to the park yesterday to do my 3 laps (1.25 miles each), and only made it 1 mile through the last lap because I suddenly had to PEE. Could it have been the gallon of water that I had been sipping on all day long, and the fact that I didn't go to the pottie before I went to the park...hmmmm Could be.. LOL

Walktober Miles: 4.75

Boy do I have some catching up to do. I'll be back at the park today...with a goal of 5 miles.

dlzbth 10-06-2004 01:36 PM

I am glad I realize there is no way I'm going to put in 100 miles in October. BUT it does give me accountablilty to do something as far as miles are concerned each day. ;)

Today I jogged/walked 1.1 miles on :tread:

Total now is 3.4 Not much is it? LOL

Donna

miss_elisha 10-06-2004 10:34 PM

Ok, so while there was no formal exercise today, I did wear the pedometer the whole time I was at work, and until I changed my clothes shortly after I got home. Then I forgot to put it back on. Today I only logged 7069 all day, but I wasn't nearly as busy today either, at least not running back and forth, I was pretty stationary. I did measure my stride though, and 7069 steps equals about 2.4 miles, and the 6216 steps I took yesterday evening come to around 2.1 miles.
However, I have to ask...
I haven't been counting "normal daily activity" in my exercise totals, and since I've been working at this job for over a year, this is pretty normal for me. I consider "exercise" to be what is done over and above that "normal" level. So the question is, since I don't count it as exercise, do I get to count the miles walked? If so, let me just say that I'm going to blow you all away! :D
I do a lot of walking. I think I might keep separate totals, just so I keep going with the stairclimber. I'd really like to reach 70-75 miles on just that by the end of the month, in addition to my normal everyday walking. But I did buy the pedometer, so I might as well use it. And it is kind of nifty. I have a new toy.

So anyway, do those miles really count? I can understand if I was actually increasing the amount of walking I do, but I'm not, I'm just counting and measuring. Does that makes sense? Let me know what you think.

lil2sweet5 10-07-2004 09:25 AM

My Butt Hurts!

I made it that extra lap around the track last night for a total of 5 miles for yesterday. Wanna know how? Read my journal

Today's Journal

October miles walked: 9.75

Whoo Hoo

Have a gr8t day everyone!

**Jennifer** 10-07-2004 09:36 AM

Elisha, I'd count the pedometer miles, now that you're aware of just how much activity you have in a regular day. In my tiny office, I'm lucky to get 5000 steps in, so for me, trying to get up, check the fax, check the front work room for mail, drop off files, anything I can do to get extra steps in helps. I know for me, I'm counting my WATP miles, plus looking at increasing daily movement to add more steps. And really, both benefit us, right? The more "active" we are in our normal day, the healthier we're going to be, right?

I think wearing the pedometer encourages me to be less of a slug- gotta get some steps in & get to the next 1000 step mark. Otherwise, I would just plop down once I'm done for the day & not move. :)

Hotcupojava 10-07-2004 06:53 PM

Just checking in

I'm only up to 4.1 miles :dz: . Eek! I'll never make it to 100. Glad I didn't put money on this bet. LOL  I did get a late start, but I'm still staying positive and hoping I'll make it up somehow. It may be impossible, but it's something to strive for. I'm hoping there are days that I can pick up the slack by doing a whole bunch. I know a girl that wasn't quite as motivated as her girlfriends that joined WW and they caught her with her pedometer strapped to her dog  . She claimed it wasn't registering all her steps and so, since she was WALKING the dog, it would still count. Uhhhhh noooo :snooty:

I did two miles on the track last night in the very cold late evening. I think it was upper 30's maybe lower 40's. Lots of stars. A little bit scary,:chicken: but I saw one of our cruisers checking on me a couple of times. My OLD police department wouldn't have done that. I'm so lucky I fell into this job. :wizard:

I've got to find a way to make these miles up. Hmmmm shaking my pedometer back and fourth seems to work well. Just kidding, honest. :lol3:

How do you all respond to everyone's comments? I've been seeing that and I want to do it too. Is there a trick to it? Or are you guys just really good at this stuff. And the different colored text for each person you respond to, wow. I'm so antiquated on this thing. Geesh. :^:

lisa girl 10-07-2004 08:56 PM

Well, I got my 10,000 steps in today. It almost killed me!! I jogged in place while doing all kinds of chores...I looked like an idiot!! DH came in to talk to me, and I was marching in place while he was trying to tell me about his day..and he said, "Would you be still!!!!???" I explained to him that I was trying to get in my 10,000 steps!! He just smiled and "allowed" me to continue - LOL!!! Gosh, this is hard! And, I feel like I am constantly on the move...with managing the kids, etc!!

O.K., then are we supposed to exercise on top of the 10,000 steps? I just can't tonight. I'm sore and still feeling sick...I think I have an ear infection - :( .

miss_elisha 10-07-2004 11:16 PM

Ok, so I got in 2.98 miles today, or 8622 steps, so far. And I've still got stuff to do. I'm absolutely positive I will top 3 miles, and if not I will take Lisa's cue and march in place for a while. Because I'm not quite done for the day, I'll change my totals in the morning.

As for exercising and walking in one day, right now I'm thinking that a 3-mile or more day is enough to wear me out. I didn't do my planned stairclimbing today, #1 because I stayed almost an hour late at work (which is highly unusual), and #2 because my body is telling me it's tired. "Listen to your body; it knows what it needs." (Do you need to use quotation marks when you quote yourself?) Ok, body, we'll rest. But don't go getting lazy on me! That way leads to destruction and disappointment!

That's the bad thing I'm seeing about this pedometer. I'm thinking, "oh, I've already walked 3 miles today, I don't need to move anymore." That's not good. I mean, it will help me get more active on my days off from exercise, and I'm certainly more conscious of taking more steps during the day, but at the same time, it almost feels like cheating, because I'm not working up a sweat, I'm not doing any more than I usually do.

*shrugs*

I dunno. Anyway, like I said, I'll update totals in the morning. Have a good night.

dlzbth 10-08-2004 09:12 AM

Nothing to post for thursday but I will be back!!! LOL No, I'm not Arnold.

:D
