August Exercise Challenge

Last blast for summer! Let's finish strong!

State your exercise goal and track it throughout the month with this supportive group of fellow exercisers. We'll compile our workout goals into a list. As each goal is met during the month, it gets turned RED in celebration.

This thread is for fitness and exercise goals. For other weight loss goals, be sure to see our sister thread: http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/chic...challenge.html

iDream 07-31-2015 09:09 AM

As always, thanks for keeping us going gardenerjoy!!

I am going to stick to what has been working. :)

Weights 3X/wk
Cardio 3X/wk
One rest day

Let's have an amazing August!!

nonameslob 07-31-2015 11:20 AM

Alright, I am ready to get back into it! I did over 40 miles running in June, moved in July and did just over 10, so I am setting a goal of 30 miles for August. I think that allows me to slowly acclimate and get back to where I was, plus I'm doing so much biking and walking just to get around, I don't want to burn myself out! Who knows what will happen when I'm no longer unemployed, too...

I'm still tracking workouts in another challenge thread so I probably won't update often but I did want to set a shorter term goal here. :)

August Goal: 30 miles running

magistra17 07-31-2015 04:41 PM

I am so excited for this challenge! Three months ago I was literally doing zero for exercise. Now I'm setting my goal for 1000 minutes. I can do it! :carrot:

gardenerjoy I really appreciate your dedication in restarting this thread each month. It has helped me so much.

unwanted37lbs 07-31-2015 05:56 PM

My goal for August is 100 miles!

gardenerjoy 08-01-2015 10:03 AM

Welcome, everyone!

Like iDream, I'm going to stick with what is working for me:
  • 1300 minutes
  • 8 Strength Training Sessions
  • 21 days with at least 8000 steps

unwanted37lbs 08-01-2015 12:14 PM

August Goal: 100 miles
August 1 (sat): 3h - 10.1 miles (89.9 miles to go) <== WOW what a good start!

SeeMyFeet 08-01-2015 03:37 PM

I haven't been to the gym as much as I would like (or need) in the past two months. With no visitors in the near future and with work schedule changes, here's my chance to develop a STABLE workout routine. I'm going for 3 workouts per week or 12 for the month...but I know I can (and would like) to do more.

gardenerjoy 08-02-2015 01:32 PM

Welcome, everyone! I'll try to get the list set up tonight -- there's still time to join and be on the initial goal list!

August goals: 1300 min, 21x 8K steps, 8x Strength Training

SeeMyFeet - Yes! Keep up the swimming! Do you go to an indoor or outdoor pool?

Tabbycat, *hugs* and welcome back.

unwanted - Wow, 10 miles Saturday? What did you do?

I know my goal is 30 miles running, but I hope you don't mind for my own sake I'm going to track all my exercises as well. Last night I went on a 10 mile bike ride with my boyfriend. The weather was glorious and I just can't get over these Colorado skies. Its so beautiful. The sun was setting as we were headed home.

My big goal this week is to be able to ride 1.5 miles to the park, run the 2.5 mile loop, and ride home. I'm aiming for Thursday! I haven't run over 2 miles since the move.

8/2: 5 mile hike
8/3: 10 mile bike ride

Jacqui_D 08-04-2015 01:43 PM

I haven't joined the exercise challenge in a long while, because I never know what kind of exercise I'm going to be doing each day or for how long. I like to switch it up to keep my body guessing. However, I do need help sticking to a certain form of exercise, so this thread may be perfect for that!

I read an article a while back about how sitting (or standing) uninterrupted for too long each day can have a very negative effect on your health, even if you exercise regularly: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/ar...ing-kills.aspx. I spend a lot of time at my computer, so upon reading this article, I set up my computer's task scheduler to send me a message every 15 minutes telling me to stand up. That's all I have to do: stand up. I don't have to move around. I just have to defy gravity by standing up. However, recently I've gotten into the habit of ignoring that message, telling myself, "I'll stand up in a few minutes," or" I'm too tired to stand up now," or "It's too much trouble with my computer and cat on my lap." The thing is I'm working really hard at the gym each day for good health. I don't want all that hard work undermined because I can't be bothered simply to stand up! According to the article:

"It’s not how many hours of sitting that's bad for you; it’s how often you interrupt that sitting that is GOOD for you!”

AND

"Standing up once every hour was more effective than walking on a treadmill for 15 minutes for cardiovascular and metabolic changes,"

AND

"Sitting down and standing up repeatedly for 32 minutes does NOT have the same effect as standing up once, 32 times over the course of a day. To get the benefit, the stimulus must be spread throughout the day."

So my GOAL is to stand up multiple times throughout the day by following computer prompts which I've set up (or if I'm not on the computer, going by the chimes of my grandfather clock, etc.). I may not do it perfectly. I'll probably still hesitate when I have a cat sleeping on me, but my ignoring those prompts needs to change!

Thanks Joy!

Tabbycat, I just read your post. I'm so sorry for your loss. And the fact that you are here, setting goals, and pushing yourself to exercise through advanced hip osteoarthritis, wow, you have my respect!

Yesterday, I did really well, but today I'm already forgetting, so if I don't pick it up a little more, I'm not going to be able to claim goal this month already! My little reminder message dings, but I need it to ding louder, lol!

Rode to Whole Foods today! Its a great two mile ride each way but it did kick my butt. Lots of hills and I have a bag of food on my back. My bike basket should be here soon. Going to yoga tonight. That's a first for me! Tomorrow is the big day - attempting the ride to the park and 2.5 mile run.

Thanks for adding me, Joy! :thanks:

So yesterday turned out well after I got on the ball. If it hadn't been for the fact that I kept getting up for other reasons yesterday morning though, I don't know if I could have counted it since I need to stand up "throughout" the day! Luckily, I'm doing much better at noticing the computer prompts this morning, so so far, so good today! :cp:
