1000 miles in 2013

Hi Everyone,

I joined and finished a 1000 mile challenge for the year 2012. I am challenging myself once again to walk 500 miles and do Elliptical for 5000 minutes this year.

I don't care how you accumulate your miles, just join me :) Let's get moving!!

Remember to reach 1,000 all we need is to average little less than 2.75 miles a day. Very doable!

workinglikeadog 01-01-2013 06:41 PM

I'll join your 1,000 miles in 2013 thread. Thanks for starting this Sum 38. Day 1, here we go!

Sum38 01-01-2013 07:03 PM

Nice to have you here Working

Karen31 01-01-2013 07:31 PM

I also will join in on 1000 miles in 2013! Thanks for starting this thread up and I know EZ will be very HAPPY that we are carrying this on into the new year! I had hoped to get started today but have that nasty cold bug that is going around... will get started in the next couple days though!

1/1--Sick
1/2--Sick
1/3--Sick (maybe tomorrow)
1/4--Sick(will this ever go away?)
1/5--Sick(I think round 2 is getting me now!)
1/6--WATP's--1 mile (finally a start!)
1/7--WATP's--1 mile
1/8--Nothing--got caught up on a little housework before becoming exhausted.
1/9--No walking but got out for Daniel Bible study today (Beth Moore)
1/10--No walking but did go for second Bible study, Breaking Free (Beth Moore)
1/21-- WATPs-- 1 Mile

Total--3 miles

His Firefly 01-01-2013 08:04 PM

I would love to join as well.

I am so excited to be doing this.

Yay me!!! Yay you! YAY US!!!!!

mothermavis 01-01-2013 08:13 PM

Me too!

Made 1.5 on the treadmill this am! I can start there.

stlrsgrl43 01-01-2013 08:13 PM

I would like to join this challenge as well, I wear a fit bit (when I can remember)

junem 01-02-2013 04:39 PM

I'd like to give it a try. I walk/run 10-12 miles a week, but I wanna try to walk a couple miles on days I don't run. If I add 7-8 miles a week, that'd get me to 1000. Mostly I sit on the couch on winter days I don't run. In summer I sometimes bike on 'off' days. But having this goal will get me out there walking I am sure. BTW, roughly how far is 10,000 steps?

Karen31 01-02-2013 06:11 PM

I haven't forgotten this-- just still sick with this lousy cold. No energy, no voice, lots of cough and leg aches... I will get started though and then have to do some making up.

His Firefly 01-02-2013 06:22 PM

One mile down yesterday - 2 down today... Only 997 to go!

:)

Dreamer2012 01-02-2013 06:57 PM

This will certainly be a challenge. I did want to clock up 500 miles as one of my goals for the year but challenging myself too 1,000 sounds pretty amazing too. I need to start getting back into walking soon. During the summer I was walking 5 miles a day for a good few weeks. Now I'm back at college and the evenings are dark and dull, I stopped and use my stepper at home. I read somewhere that 2000 steps would be the same as one mile which I would do when I'm using it. I've exams starting tomorrow for a week and a half. Then I've two weeks off where I want to kick start these 1,000 miles outside as well as what I get with the stepper. Can't wait for the long evenings to return. Sum, I watched the 2012 thread and you are such an inspiration! :) Good luck everyone this year clocking up the 1,000 miles.

Tabbycat 01-02-2013 08:25 PM

Can bicycle miles count, too?

Sum38 01-02-2013 08:27 PM

Tabby Anyway you can get the miles in works for me :)

Tabbycat 01-02-2013 08:37 PM

Count me in!

I am pretty old (57) but started jogging last spring. I can run 2 or 3 miles at a time, but I should not do it every day, so I try to ride my bike on the days I don't run.

It's a challenge for me to run 30 miles a month because I teach school and I'm in two orchestras and a bluegrass group, so lots of evenings are taken up with practice or performance. But if I combine the running miles with some biking miles, maybe I can do this. :)

Karen31 01-02-2013 08:46 PM

This was from one of EZ's first post on his original thread for 2012. Just about anything that gets you and moving counts!

"and biking and hiking and wheel-chairing and swimming and surfing and mountain climbing and......and....and....."

chubbiegurl 01-02-2013 08:54 PM

I usually ride my stationary bike about an hour a day everyday. On cheat days I only ride 30 mins, I just don't feel right when I don't ride it now. Too bad the mileage reader is broken. But I assume I am riding over 3 miles a day atleast. I would like to start running or even walking but it's so cold out, and the cold makes me so itchy. So I will continue with this challenge in mind!

Karen31 01-02-2013 09:04 PM

If you go to a fitness site like fitnesspal.com you can log in you bike riding, and a lot of other activities and it will figure for you your miles. Hope that helps

junem 01-02-2013 11:15 PM

I kicked off my journey of 1000 miles with 4.1 miles on the treadmill at the fitness club. It was about as crowded as I've ever seen it. I guess everyone has their resolutions.

I'd like to join you too Sum38. Thanks for starting this challenge.

I will walk 500 miles and I will do 2400 minutes aerobics, weight training, toning, stair climbing etc. Since I love walking at Stone Mountain, I shouldn't have a problem getting in the 500 miles.

1/1 - 30 Min WW Punch DVD
1/2 - 25 Mins Firm DVD & .5 mile walk
1/3 - 30 Mins of Stairs & Walking on my work breaks - This was a scheduled rest day
1/4 - 30 Mins Firm Cardio Inferno, 15 min walk & stairs at work
1/5 - 3 mile walk @ Stone Mtn.
1/6 - 3 mile walk @ the Mtn
1/7 - 40 mins Firm DVD

6.5/500 Miles
170/2400 Minutes

Karen31 01-03-2013 01:38 PM

I don't know if it was mentioned before or not but it would be nice if you go back and edit your post to add the miles each day, that way the post don't get out of hand and way over 500 posts in no time. You can still make posts about comments too but if you just log in your miles it makes it nicer to just edit the post. Gosh, was that confusing?

We can do that, or we can just start part #2 etc. Unfortunately, from experience, many will drop out. I hope that is not the case this time around!!! -- I was left to post my progress alone for many months last year. SOOOO I challenge each one of you to stay on path :D :D

junem 01-04-2013 05:37 PM

I was wondering how to get a nifty progress tracker like sum38.

Also, I am having 2nd thoughts about this goal. 2.75 miles a day is what it works out to be. That sounds do-able, but that has no allowances for days off, or days with other fitness activities. I just totalled my logs and discovered I only walked and ran about 480 miles in 2012. HELP I need encouragement/strategies/etc.

GettinFit 01-04-2013 08:11 PM

I plan on staying the course as I MUST exercise for health reasons. I am trying to stay consistent with it.

To date:
Walking 1/500
Aerobics 90/2400

Karen31 01-04-2013 08:12 PM

You can log in other activity too..Swimming, hiking, riding bikes.... just whatever works for you. And you can go to a fitness site like fitnesspal.com and look up that activity and it will figure it out for you... Check it out.

Nikel1979 01-04-2013 08:57 PM

I'm in! One of my running goals this year is to hit 1000 miles. :D I'll probably just update mine once a week. Between being a full time student, working part time as an undergrad research assistant, an hour commute, and having 2 kids in elementary school, I don't have much free time during the week. ;) I weigh in Sat mornings before I run, so I'll just add updating this at the same time. :smug:

I'm only counting miles I run.

8 miles so far this week. Going to do 5 today to help make up for being under.

I am really excited about this challenge, I think its just hard enough and just doable enough!

:)

workinglikeadog 01-05-2013 02:35 PM

Hi Everyone, good to see so many committed to a year long goal.

juneum, those winter days is what inspired me to buy a Striv and challenge myself to 10,000 steps a day. It depends on your step distance but 10,000 steps is around 4 1/2 miles. Stay & set your goal for 500 miles, but STAY!

His firefly, can't wait till I can add tickers to help me keep track of miles and pounds lost.

Tabbycat, you are 57 years young - same as me! I am impressed with your running btw.

Karen, if I edit my post does it show up as the last post on the thread or does it remain where I first posted it? I think I'll start riding my indoor bike.

Thank you sum38 for being flexible with starting a new thread if need be.

JANUARY MILES to date: 20 miles
 Diana

Thanks for the encouragement and suggestions, esp Karen31 and Workinglikeadog. It is a good suggestion to look at other activities as "walking equivalents." I will probably go with some formula like 4 miles on the bike=1 mile walking. I like to log a fair number of bike miles in the summer and it hardly seems fair to count bike miles equal to foot miles.

Total week1= 17.5 (4.5 walk, 13.0 treadmill running)
