SherpaMelissa, it is good to know your back is feeling better. I hope your shoulder feels better soon as well. You are training for a 1/2 marathon? That is Awesome!

I have been working out everyday! I did eat too much over the weekend, but did not gain any weight, so I am happy about that!

9/17 - 1/2 hour walk; 1 hour walk; and 1 hour NYC ballet workout
9/18 - 1 hour and 15 minute walk
9/19 - ran outside for 3 miles (33 minutes)

Ihaven't worked out yet today, but its is early still!

Unhappy trying really hard to get moving

Hello to nutbar and fishwoman! Good to see new posters on here!

Melissa-I'm so glad your back is better--are you very behind on your training schedule?

I have been out of it lately--I didn't have time to get any workouts in at the end of last week and I thought at the time I'd be okay b/c I had 2 good ones Mon and Tues and I would still do alright on my diet. Nope. As soon as I told myself I was going to have to take a break on the workout schedule my eating was all over the place. Ugh! I was doing so well too...I don't know why I just sort of gave up, but it lasted for 5 days. I finally made myself go to the gym last night but I only got like 17min of running in before I let myself quit. I am so disappointed in myself right now. I'm going to the gym tonight and dh has already agreed to be the chauffer for dance class, so I can spend some more time there. I still really don't want to go. I don't know--am I burned out or just being lazy or self-sabatoging? bleh. I know I'll feel better once I'm there, it's just hard to get in that mindset right now.

Great job Fishwoman. It is nice to someone really motivated. I am training for a half marathon, in January in Phoenix.

Hey Mel - I just went through exactly the same thing. I gained 6lbs from Friday to today! What the heck is that?! I know in my head that if I am not exercising, then I may gain weight. Given that I may gain weight I have a built in excuse for it and I let my eating go. I even planned on letting it go, but it should be one brownie. Not 5!

I should really not be too behind on tranig if I can get my long run in the end of this week. I hope it gets better. I really don't want to have to take steroids again.

Melra - hang in there! I know it can get hard to exercise every day. Especially if you miss more than one day in a row (I, at least, find it very easy to slip into a downward spiral of negativity). Just remember, you WILL feel better once you are there. I had to force myself to run yesterday, but about one mile in, i was like "gee, I sure am glad I put my sneakers on!" I will probably have the same issue tonight (I have been so busy at work that I haven't been able to go to the gym during lunch), but will try to do something just so that I don't give up. Hey! at least you know you are going to the gym tonight! Does your gym have a sauna or steam room? Hang out in there after your workout - I love it when I have time to steam!

thanks for the encouragement guys--I think i need a major attitude adjustment right now. I did go to the gym today but I was pathetic. I did 12min on the elliptical, then weights--which were actually okay, i finally upped my weights and added another set like I was supposed to do last week. Then I was going to run for a bit, but I was on there for like 5 min and I was just so bored with myself I turned off the machine and left. How...what's the word...typical? Lazy McSlothenstein? It was that easy for me to quit. I said "eh, I'm done" and I actually quit. I'm so irritated with myself, yet not enough to be motivated. Does that even make sense? blech. Yes, I totally know I need a little cheese to go with this whine and yes, if I had cheese I would totally eat it all right now with some crackers. And then whatever else I had around here, which is thankfully not much.

So, here's what I'm going to do. I'm just going to command myself to get some cardio in every stinking day this week until I'm over this little hump and if I don't like it then tough b/c this is what I get for being a quitter. I'm going to do 45min of cardio tomorrow, then 25 on Thurs plus weights, then 30 on Friday. Sat I will be on my feet all day and then hauling around displays and equipment, so I'm letting that count. Sun I'll do an hour of low-moderate cardio. I'm just spelling it out here b/c I'll sneak out of it otherwise.

I'm going to bed early tonight (for me anyway!) b/c I am hoping to wake up early enough to do a pilates workout before I have to leave the house.

Melissa~I hope you don't end up on the steroids either. Good luck with your long run this week but don't overdo it!

Fishwoman~Sounds like you have been incredibly active--wow! What is the NYC ballet thing--is that a video?

Default Newbie

I am a return newbie. Was in about 5 years ago. Then husband had cancer and is now a 5 year survivor. Now I need to take care of myself. Get back to exercising and watching my health.
I am heaidng to the fitness center at the college Thursday and get signed back up. I am very lucky that I only have to pay senior citizen cost for the semester. I have really missed out on the exercising. Hubby liked the walking but I don't. I like the equipment.
I am a late joiner and definitely want to be in on the October Challenge.

Quiltcrazy, welcome! I'm so glad to hear about your husband. It's sounds like it's definitely time for YOU, now!

Fishwoman, welcome to the exercise group!! You're doing great!!

Melra, you go, girl!! Your plans are excellent, and we'll be here to cheer you on and give you a kick when you need one.

Everyone here is doing great... let's keep it up, girls!!!

I'm on my way to my program... I'm so NOT looking forward to walking this morning, but I know I'll feel better for having done it. It's so tempting to just take my car...

Hee Mel! That made me laugh this morning, thanks!

At least you went to the gym. That took some motivation too. You have to try the one more minute thing, I bet. I know the wanting to quit feeling, luckily I don't give in very often. If I drag my butt out of bed at 4:45am and go to the gym, I am not giving up!

Of course, I skipped the gym this morning. I can run at lunchtime though. I have to get over this not wanting to get out of bed rut. Pretty soon it will be much harder to run at lunchtime.

Great job everyone! We will get through this week and exercise more! Good luck!

Mmm, cheese and crackers - good stuff

Ellis - how was your walk this morning?

I did 13 minutes on the elliptical last night while waiting for the 7:30 class to start and then I actually went to a group aerobic class. I normally don't do group classes because they are either at inconvenient times or I just feel awkward and clumsy. I happened to work until 7 last night, so I figured I would go ahead and take a class (hip hop funk aerobics). There was only one other girl plus the instructor, so I did not embarrass myself in front of too many people. OMG, I was pouring sweat after about 15 minutes! It was pretty fast-paced.

Melra - the NYC ballet is a dvd i rented and then bought. it is one-hour long with classical music and narration over the ballerinas (2 male, 2 female) doing the exercises. I enjoy it because you are doing actual ballet moves - this is NOT a cardio workout. It is more stretching and legs, but I usually only do cardio and i wanted to find something other than pilates to do. I like pilates also, but I really like this ballet workout.

Great job everyone! Keep it up!

Editing to add that I just got back from the gym - 30 minutes on the elliptical!

okay, well I did better on the exercise today but the eating was off. I still couldn't even come close to the endurance goal I had already met. I did 20 min on the elliptical and then 25 on the treadmill jogging with walking intervals. I kept my heartrate up the whole time though.

tomorrow I will do 25 min cardio and then weights--man was I sore today!

quiltcrazy~glad to hear that your husband is well enough for you to focus on your own health. welcome to the thread!

I'm impressed you went to the class Fishwoman. I never go to classes. My gym doesn't seem to have any on the schedule that fit my schedule. But, that may just be a good excuse. I'm sure if I really wanted to I could figure it out!

Yay Mel! Last time I checked last night you hadn't checked in on Wednesday's exercise. I was going to track you down! The most important thing is you went.

So, today is a rest day. BUT I had kind of talked myself into going to the gym anyway. BUT I didn't, so now I feel kind of like a slacker, even though I wasn't scheduled to go anyway.

I should run 45 minutes (5:1 intervals) tomorrow. I think I can do it. I've been doing fine with 1/2 hours so I'm just going to go for it.

Guess i just have my mind set on doing this and going all the way. I never have to "make" myself go to the gym. Mom of a fellow schooler with my child so it helps. Shes not all that motivated (yet) but i kept her butt going! Lets hope if i have a down day she will do the same.

Hope everyone is doing good on the Sept workout challenge. I have a little over 100 mins to go on my 1500 challenge (as of 9-22-05) and i want to keep going! Thinking of uping my challenge by another 500 min (2000 min total) by the end of the month. Wish me luck! I know we all can do it. Keep up the great work everyone!!! AND GET YOUR *** OFF THE COUCH!

I tacked on an extra 10 min to my cardio today b/c I succumbed to temptation from the breakroom at lunch. (extra exercise as penance--a throwback from Catholic upbringing!) I did 10min on the elliptical, then weights (my god my abs hurt too!) and then 25min on the treadmill--I had to have 2 walking intervals though. I might not be pacing myself well enough, I'll have to work on that. I'm supposed to do this 5k event with a friend next Sat. She'll finish no sweat (maybe even literally) but I have a feeling I'll have to walk for a bit. I'm still doing it though.

I was lifting more weight than this guy at the gym. Then I wiped my sweaty face on my sleeve. T-U-F-F. Which is funny b/c I am a very girly looking girl dimples and all and I'm totally getting manly at the gym. Must be the rock station I listen to when I'm there!

Woo Mel! You go! It doesn't matter why you added the extra time, just that you did it. I wouldn't worry about walking at all during the 5K. You know my training involves walking intervals. I originally thought I could run more, but I'm starting to understand how the intervals help me.

I ran my 45 minutes this morning at a 5:1 interval. I did do the last 9 minutes without a walk interval. Also, by the end I had it up to 4.4 or maybe 4.6. I can't decide if I should start back up with the weights for next week or wait one more week.

Ack! I took a yoga class last night (plus 10 minutes on the elliptical while waiting for the start time). What a reminder that i need to stretch more

So here is my plan - let me know what you think - I will not stretch before or after cardio. I *hate* stretching (even more than I hate lifting weights (which I am forcing myself to start doing as of the beginning of October)). Anyhow, since i won't stretch, I have decided to do either yoga or pilates between 2 and 3 times per week. That way I at least get my stretching in, and will hopefully become more flexible.

Everyone is doing great with their workouts! I was thinking about running today, but it is supposed to be 90 degrees. I will probably just do the elliptical again.
