SusanB Rant away...

I made my pork chops in cream for my SIL who thinks he knows everything. He's about 280 and on the IP diet. He started in to tell me the pros and cons. Like it is low carb but emphasizes lower fat. He ate one of the large boneless chops and was eying a second, took half of it and then finally finished off the rest, making sure that he got the last bit of cream gravy from the dish. Then he complained that he ate too much and moaned and groaned. I also made mashed cauliflower with garlic and Parmesan that my DH loved especially with some of the gravy.

Now the SIL is eying the book and the cookbook that I just received. I may have pork chopped a convert.

BTW - The cookbook is good. I like most the unusual methods of preparation and substitution. Little things you can pick up that you just never thought about. I will probably tweak some ingredients to more our tastes but keep the general recipes as a base. It does not list nutritional info nor does it have an index. things others on MDA have complained about. I am looking forward to the reader inspired cookbook in the works.

Today is fast day. I have a slight headache this am but that could be due to the THREE GLASSES OF WINE I drank last night. I usually have about a half-glass at dinner.

Live and learn...
Sandy

Some of us complain and some of us just keep our mouths shut and get it done...

Many on MDA tell their stories of never offering advice just to get the "Oh, I could never do that" response. You tried to help and you would be such a great resource for the folks you described, Susan. My SIL quoted some business guru who said only 15% of people really want to learn something new. The rest you have to just be a good role model for and hope someday it rubs off.

Hugs,
Sandy

SusanB -- Peeps are stupid  they ask for advice then when you give it to them... Whatever....... I've given up, I now lead by example... the only people I can talk to about this way of life is you guys and my running client who has lost 10lbs in the last month with this lifestyle and she is loving it... She had done Atkins with success and was open to low-carb and that's the only reason I talked to her about it and lent her my book... I love her she's such a great person...

Ok, so off to the gym I go... TTFN

Hi everyone!

I have been out of the loop big time (mini vacation to mountains followed by a nightmare "small" home improvement project), but I just read back a couple pages.

Happy Anniversary to Susan!

Welcome to all the new primal/paleos!

I hope everyone (Bob and ... dang it, now I forget who else was injured) are feeling better.

What else...?

Oh, I want to know what Susan puts the peach salsa on...yum.

And, ditto what everyone said in the rants!!!!! I, too, am very tired of people complaining of this and that or acting like they are a million and one years old when SO much of their dismay and ill-health is SELF-INFLICTED. I had to go to Wal-Mart today to get a prescription -- I've realized I buy very few groceries there anymore. Being in Wal-Mart (at least ours), you are utterly and totally surrounded by sickness and lack of health-- people limping or otherwise struggling to walk, hugely obese people, people much too young riding on the handicapped carts, etc. etc. and all with their carts full of CARBS, CARBS, CARBS (and not the kind from fruits and veggies). A man was sitting outside selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts, and he had a 20 oz. Pepsi (not diet) and TWO packs of cigs next to him. At the risk of sounding completely self-righteous, I felt repulsed when I left.

As to what Ilene just said about feeling like I can't talk to anyone about how I eat -- my parents are cool with it, and we ate there last night and had a meal that was fairly primal -- fish caught by dad and caprese salad (fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, basil), and I had red wine. They served bread, but that was easy to pass on. My husband is cool with it too -- but NONE of my friends seem to get it at all. I know I've posted on this before, but it's hardest with my friends who have the philosophy I used to have -- low calorie, low fat, high fiber, etc.

I start back at school tomorrow, and I have already decided that I will not preach nor try to turn anyone on to primal/low carb eating... it's a battle I just won't win. I do have one friend who does Atkins, and she gets so many eye rolls it's not even funny. So, I guess she and I will stick together at the cookie, goodie laden school meetings and teacher work rooms.

Speaking of Atkins, I have been struggling to break this plateau and before we went out of town I was logging my food at dailyplate. I did some reading yesterday on MDA, and I've decided I am going to go very low carb (20%) for the next two weeks. I went to the Atkins website, did some more reading, and I realized I will basically be doing what the Atkins folks call INDUCTION -- I will stick to organic, grass-fed, venison, etc., but really it's Atkin's induction. I am hoping to experience a WHOOSH of losing... I'm hoping for 3-5 lbs in the two weeks. I think that will give me the boost I am need to get the 15-20lbs. off.

Has anyone done the very low carb? Any advice? I'm a little worried about not being able to have fruit for two weeks , but otherwise I think I can do it.

Sorry for such a rambling and lengthy post, but I'm glad to be back home and back to 3FC and chatting again!

Good morning!

Yesterday's get-together was much better. The huge diningroom table was filled with lovely food (and one little basket of sliced bagette). Even for dessert, someone brought a great big fruit salad.

Claire ... We had peach salsa with our grilled meat.

Our hosts sent our leftovers home but kept the peach salsa

I'm finding that primal is not really too different from a couple of different plans I've tried.

Good Morning to all...

I only made it through 21 hours of fasting yesterday and did not lose a lb. I weighed exactly the same this morning. I find that fascinating that the digital scale registers the exact weight. You think it would vary by a few tenths or something.

I went to a couple real estate open houses with my daughter and got very winded. Went home and read some. Got up and thought I was going to pass out. So I remember Bob saying that he promised his doc that if he felt weak he would eat. I also was hungry and I am NEVER hungry. So I think something else was going on. I broke my fast earlier than usual.

I listened to my body. I just wish my body would listen to me, GET RID OF SOME FAT!!! This is going to take a while

Here's to keepin on track...
Sandy

I got a book awhile back that suggests that one's body has to set-point readjust a little when we experience plateaus and that folks should lose some weight (10%), and then try to maintain that weight for a period of time and feel great about it knowing that our body is memorizing that set-point. The author suggests 6 months. A little too long for me but a thought.

What I am trying to do, is say "I'm not in the 170s anymore and I will never be in the 170s ever again." I want to say the same about the 160s etc. even if it takes me another month or two to get in the 150s. Once I am in the 150s, I can fit into the majority of my clothes and do not feel "obese". In the 140s, I will be close to what my daughter weighs and she looks great. In fact, in the 130s, I may look too gaunt (lose my apple cheeks) and not a good look for someone my age. It will then depend on my blood lipids as lowering these, especially very high inflammation markers, is my most pressing issue.

The point I am trying to make is, I am going to celebrate each ten pounds and focus on maintaining that and never going back again, even if that means, I am not exactly at my goal for a good long while. I need to fix this broken metabolism once and for all. Enough of the yo-yo dieting and trying the next diet year after year after year.

Claire - I do not know how long you have been trying to get those last pounds off but as this is a lifestyle that you do well, a little induction could just be the thing to lower your set-point again. The reason I try to fast every four days is to hopefully confuse my body. Am I in starvation or not? Whoops here comes some more food so I guess I am not starving. Release the Grease.

My calories have been quite low, not on purpose, so I may need to eat more fat before the old bod is convinced to let loose.

Hugs,
Sandy

Sandy, I'm glad you listened to your body and broke the fast... hang in there. It will happen. You could always try the VLC thing with me for two weeks -- however, they do say with induction that you should eat 3 meals a day and not fast.

So far, so good. I had an egg and half an avocado for breakfast - not very exciting but I was in a rush. Uh, no lunch yet, but I am having a large salad with chicken for dinner. I just made my husband a fresh peach and blueberry smoothie -- I licked the spoon, and it was a little tough not to pour myself a small smoothie too -- it crossed my mind that maybe I made a mistake of doing this VLC thing at the end of summer. There's still so much yummy fresh fruit, and I can't have any for 13 more days! I think I will cut some peaches and freeze, so I can have them when I phase them back in.

Hope I'm not being too extreme with the very low carb. I think I need to make sure I'm taking the correct supplements too. Will go look that up now.

Hope everyone is having a primal day!

Claire,

If I don't go down pretty soon, I will definitely lower the carbs. I have been keeping track for the last 16 days and my carb average is 37.5 including the no carb fast days. Not 20 grams but pretty low.

I will be watching for your good results.....
Sandy

Wow, Sandy -- 37 seems pretty darned low to me! You are on a real plateau -- me too, but I kind of know why (too many treats).

Susan, ah, I bet the peach salsa is divine over pork or any meat -- I plan to try it in two weeks with my frozen fresh peaches.

Pretty good day - I did have tomatoes on salad, but otherwise I think I was within the guidelines. No exercise though... painting, painting, painting -argh!

Good morning!

I didn't plan to IF yesterday but it got to be noon and I wasn't hungry so ... 18 hours. I broke it with HB eggs and butter. We had steak and vegetables for supper and then we went to a friends house for coffee .... and mixed berry short cake. Sue is a wonderful cook and is was very wisely made. If it hadn't been for that wee slice of cake ...

But I've dumped my weekend bloat already. I'd be a lot happier if that didn't take me back up over 130 every time I have a social weekend.

If it's the 23rd, I'm doing a crappy job with the exercise ticker. Maybe I should do a two week challenge with Claire.

Speaking of tickers. I just was allowed to create mine and I do not see it on old posts so I am writing this new one to see if it shows up. If not, is there something I missed?

Good Morning, I gained a pound ???????
Sandy

PS-Is it an informal rule that we only change our ticker to reflect loses and when we gain we just ignore it?

I see it Sandy! Yup, if I'm actively working away, I only change to lower. That thing in my profile is two pounds light but I'm not changing it until 127 comes along ... I know it will!

My oh My, you cave boys and cave girls have been very busy while I was on vacation! It took me almost half an hour to read all the posts, 4 pages of em'.

I am pleased to announce that I stayed 100% primal while I was away! 100%! no tortillas, no smores, no hamburger buns, no hash browns even! We are in the third week of Primal and I have not had any grains, sugars, flours, nadda.....and I am excited to share that! I dont feel deprived at all, not often hungry, and I feel pretty healthy!

Had a great time at the camp out, we were up in the Cascade pass, so it was cooler, but then again we left 100 degree weather.

BOB, you mentioned the North West, and that peaches were only an hour away from you, I bet you must be pretty close to me! We are finally getting some good peaches, BUT until this week we have been calling them peapples---looks like a peach, crunches like an apple.

Off to get some more work done, vacation catch up is fierce!
