Hi everyone!

I didn't have a very good deficit today. My husband has been talking about pizza all week and I finally broke down and ordered one. I figured the 4 slices I ate at 1100 calories  At least I got my exercise in!

Friday: 2272 calories, 364 deficit, 35 minutes cardio, 20 minutes weights

Mrs Snark 05-13-2006 08:19 AM

Day 12 was good, got my 1 hour of exercise and ~1250 calories. Got my plan ready for Day 13 so I'm set...

Valerie, pizza every now and then is practically a life requirement! :)

wish4fit 05-13-2006 09:24 AM

Thank you Robsia!!! I didn't get the deficit thing either but have been counting calories - and even losing! I'm new to the site but am so far very into it and have found it to be incredibly motivating. I love this idea of a deficit though, it's a great way to calculate progress. I do have one question however....How do you know what you burn in a day? I'm sure you must be using something to calculate this..... Is it FitDay maybe? I'd love to join in with you guys on this calorie-counting journey of FITNESS!! If someone can tell me what you use for all of this calclulating I am totally in!! :carrot:

Thanks!
Angela

Robsia 05-13-2006 10:44 AM

Yes - most ladies on here use sites such as FitDay or Nutridiary to calculate calories burned.

I have found Nutridiary to be pretty accurate in that I have lost more or less what they calculate I should be losing - to within a pound or two over the last four months. However I had to set the fitness level one level below what it should be - I am a teacher so spend a lot of time on my feet - and I had to set it to desk work. But apart from that, and FitDay is the same I hear, it's been pretty good.

It gives me 1546 for BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) and 599 for General Activity. I'm aiming to lose 1.75 pounds per week, meaning I need a deficit of 875 every day. I burn 2145 according to them, so I can eat 1270. Every time I log a weight lsos it drops of course as your calories burned drops as your weight becomes less. I started off with a target deficit of 1000 AND being able to eat 1400. No longer!!

Valerie Joy 05-13-2006 01:18 PM

Angela I use fitday. I think counting deficits really makes sense because it figures in activity and exercise. I use to just aim for 1600 calories a day but now I aim for 1000 calorie deficit a day.

I had another high calorie day again today and tomorrow probably won't be any better since we're going out to eat for Mothers day. But at least I have deficits even if they're small :)

Sat: 1861 calories, 554 deficit, 40 minute walk

wish4fit 05-14-2006 07:44 AM

THANKS GALS!! I checked out Fitday and Nutrisystem and ended up going with Fitday. It took me awhile to get set up but I think I am good to go. My biggest problem is some of the conversions....I'm from the States but I live in Scotland right now and everything here is in mililiters and grams! For the most part it is figured out though....So, since ya'll are posting I suppose I will too :)!

Calories: 1230 Deficit: 1670 Excercise: 35 minutes rowing, 1 hr 15 min walking

It looks really good typed out, but really I am making up for the Indian food I had on Thursday and Friday night!! For some of us it's pizza, for me it's curry!

Thank you for all your help :) :) I'll be posting soon....

And to Susan - I hope the wedding was fantastic!

Angela

srmb60 05-14-2006 11:13 AM

It was an awesome day gals. I'll post some pictures as soon as I can.

Happy Mother's Day everyone! I have two excuses to do nothing today ;)

Less of Lena 05-14-2006 11:15 AM

Hi, Susan! Glad to hear you had a wonderful day! Now you can relax!

Happy Mother's Day all!

dgpebbles 05-14-2006 12:32 PM

Happy Mother's Day

susan-glad yo hear everything went great...can't wait to see the pictures

Valerie Joy 05-14-2006 10:42 PM

Hi everyone!

I hope you all had a good mothers day. I had another high calorie dinner today. My weekly deficit is ok. I'm hoping to see at least a pound down on my weigh in tomorrow! :crossed:

Sun: 1691 calories, 945 deficit, 34 minutes cardio, 20 minutes weight

Weekly deficit: 5412

Less of Lena 05-15-2006 09:37 AM

Hmmmm guess no one knows the answer to my Calorie Cycling question?

Anyway, good morning all. I had a blow-out weekend, what with my birthday and Mother's Day all at once. If you add my Saturday AND Sunday deficits, you STILL wouldn't hit 50! By the same token, at least neither were surplusses!

Over this weekend, I allowed myself to have things I don't normally have (cake, ice cream and champagne), and I think I still did pretty well. Instead of eating a whole steak, a whole baked potato (drenched in butter) and a whole dinner roll, I split it all in half and had half on Saturday (and no butter) and the remainder on Sunday. And just one slice of cake on Saturday and one on Sunday. And just one small scoop of ice cream on Saturday, none on Sunday (being a not-sweets person, I honestly forgot it was there!).

Anyway, I enjoyed every single morsel! No regrets, no remorse and absolutely no guilt. Won't allow it.

Now, it's back on track starting today. Maybe this weekend will answer my own questions about cycling, since I obviously had two high cal/low exercise days!

srmb60 05-15-2006 11:00 AM

Lena, ask the cycling question again. I've been out in left field for a few days. I'll try to be a better correspondent now :)

Less of Lena 05-15-2006 12:13 PM

Hehe. nooooooo Susan, what, have you had something on your mind lately? ;) ;) ;)

In a nutshell, my question was whether cycling involved JUST calories or can you (should you) cycle deficits? If the key to cycling is to "keep the metabolism guessing", should we deficit-watchers then aim for a total deficit for the week but seesaw the daily deficits? And how does "deliberate" activity (exercise or whatever) fit in the picture?

So far, so good getting back on track. Had a decent breakfast and a good, hearty workout. If the rest of the day continues like this, I should have a respectable deficit.

Oh, and I bought the steel cut oats on Friday. Think I'll try them tomorrow!

srmb60 05-15-2006 12:26 PM

I've only heard folks talk about cycling the calories they eat. Hmmm.
I do know that folks don't always lift or do cardio everyday.
I really can't see why manipulating your deficit wouldn't work. I know I lost a few pounds when I was busy redecorating.
You can be our guinea pig Lena. Can't hurt to give it a shot.

Less of Lena 05-15-2006 12:52 PM

Yep, can't hurt to give it a go!

Sunday was pretty much break even. Deficit = 13 (not a typo, yep 13 ) Today should be much higher. I'll try for a few more highers and then slip a low one in there. Goal for the week will be 5250.

Oooo a new project! :ink: <--- Lena, the guinea pig!

tresor 05-15-2006 12:56 PM

A few days away from calorie counting and I need to get back on track. So far today has been good. It just goes to show that I need the structure of journaling to keep track of what I put into my mouth. It's a learning process. I'm also trying new foods and trying to get more veggies into my daily routine. Good luck everyone.

blues4miles 05-15-2006 05:00 PM

Busy weekend so didn't have time to post. Didn't eat real great, but did a LOT of lifting and assembling and walking between the moving of furniture, boxes, shopping for more furniture, moving said new furniture, and assembling new furniture. Hopefully within a week we will completely move into the new place, just waiting for hot water to be turned on! :D

Friday's deficit: 98
Saturday's deficit: 535
Sunday's deficit: 334
Probably could have been better, but oh well! I feel pretty good for all the hard work and *might* be down weight-wise, have to remember to add a scale to list of things I need to buy before I move... :)

Susan-glad to hear it went great, post some pictures soon!
Lena - let us know how the cycling goes, I am curious as well!

Valerie Joy 05-15-2006 10:31 PM

Miles you sound really busy with the move! I bet you're buring a lot of calories with all that activity!

I had a good day today with my deficit! :)

Monday: 1454 calories, 1233 deficit, 45 minutes curves

srmb60 05-16-2006 08:08 AM

It feels good to be back in the swing gals. Even if I only had a deficit of around 200 cals. Like we say ... a deficit is a deficit!

Less of Lena 05-16-2006 10:50 AM

Good morning!

Still trying to sort out how/if CalCyc works in conjunction with deficit accounting. So many variables to manipulate! Hi cal, low ex, mod def... I-yi-yi!

So far, Sunday was Hi Cal/Lo Ex, break even deficit. Monday was Lo Cal/Hi Ex, Hi Def (deficit *this* shy of 900). Not sure what to shoot for today. I *think* it'll be a Mod Ex day, but not sure where I should put Cals. Should I aim for a Mod Def day? :dizzy:

And don't worry, I'm mindful that Hi Cal should still be "good" cal. I won't be using Big Macs to fill up those Hi Cal days! Still, after trying so hard to be "good" over the past few months, it's going to feel weird (and slightly naughty) to deliberately go over 1,800 calories in a day.

Ah well, I'm sure I'll get it all sorted out.

I know what you mean about the food recordkeeping, Kathy. Just like wearing my pedometer, I feel sort of odd if I don't record my daily intake. You would never have convinced me of that 6 months ago!

Miles, I'm sure you burned off quite a bit with the move. It's amazing how strenuous moving is!

Nice numbers there, Valerie!

Glad you're back in the swing, Susan! It's always so comfy when you're here!

Less of Lena 05-16-2006 11:28 AM

Hmmmm maybe the deficit should stay constant and the cals fluctuate? Hi cal/Hi Ex alternated with Lo Cal/Lo Ex? Ack, my head is spinning... Must... stop... over-analyzing... :dizzy:

blues4miles 05-16-2006 12:27 PM

Valerie - excellent deficit!

Susan - you are right, any deficit is better than none :D And where are those pictures?

Lena - sounds intriguing, is exercise supposed to be coordinated with the calories? It would make sense you'd be hungrier on the day you worked out, but are you aiming for the opposite?

I overate yesterday by about 400 calories, so I dutifully subtracted that from my May deficit :o Hoping to start to get in more walking when the move is all done, and there will be more lifting tonight. I suppose I feel better when I go over my calories so long as I've been getting my exercise in. Bad news of the move is going to have to wait over a week to get the internet up, now *that* is going to be hard! I will be on at work though to say hi to you ladies, everyone take care!

Oh, Susan, how lovely! Thank you for sharing your wonderful day!

Your daughter looks beautiful! You have a very handsome family. I especially like the picture of all three kids together. Is she the first to marry?

Weddings are such glorious events! Congrats on becoming a mom-in-law!

Less of Lena 05-16-2006 08:14 PM

Not entirely sure what I'm aiming for, Miles! Still trying to figure it out! Chefbran told me about the Wendie plan, which is a WW thing but can be adapted to any program. As she suggested, I read up on it and sounds very intriguing! It involves cycling and touches on how to incorporate exercise into the mix. I'm still trying to sort it all out, though. I'm a work in process!

So far, looks like today is a rather lo cal day for me, so may be a higher than anticipated deficit. Who knows, though. Day's not over yet and there's a lot more attack-of-the-munchies moments to get through!

Valerie Joy 05-16-2006 09:21 PM

Susan lovely pictures!!

I had another good day OP today. I'm still adjusting to have a full time job plus tutoring. I got home so late today both of my gyms were closed so I did a Tae Bo DVD.

Tuesday: 1436 calories, 1137 deficit, 30 minutes Tae Bo

dgpebbles 05-17-2006 12:04 AM

I have so much catching up to do...sorry I've been missing so much...I'm keeping busy..can't wait for this all to be over...I miss my exercising...anyway deficit yesteday of 515 and today of 688..I have my first one hour training session tomorrow with my trainer and he is also going to give me a meal plan that the computer made from the foods I like to eat...I had to fill out a survey of what I would/wouldn't eat...

srmb60 05-17-2006 08:08 AM

Thanks gals! If I'm ever having a low day I'll come back here and read your responses :)

Lena? Yes the princess is our first wedding. The tall slender one would far rather be tearing apart cars. We joke that the only girls he meets are at the drive-thru at Tim Hortons. And my curly haired boy is only 19 and in college. He has stacks of friends who are girls but no one special yet.

Donna? we want to hear all about that training session.

Miles? we're going to miss you! Put a firecracker under that hook-up guy. Surely he just doesn't understand how important a connection to 3fc is!

Valerie? you do so well! I'm proud of you for getting out the DVD. I would have driven past the closed gyms, gone home and plunked on the sofa.

I had a bit of a leftover KFC binge last night but it's all gone now so I feel a bit stronger. But no deficit for me for yesterday.

What is this exercise you speak of?

Susan - you and your children all looked gorgeous! What a wonderful and special day, and how happy your daughter must be now :D

Valerie - hope you get used to the full time job, sounds like your deficits are still pretty great!

Donna - let us know how it goes with the trainer, sounds like an interesting idea. Is it just a food plan or going to change exercise too?

Deficit of 533 for me yesterday, all thanks to a ton of lifting and hard work. Don't have my cat with me yet in the new place, but fiance's cat kept me up all night long freaking out and marching all around me. Silly cats! They are lucky they are so cute, or I'd have thrown them out the window long ago!

Valerie Joy 05-17-2006 08:19 PM

Hi everyone! I had another good day today. I'm close to my 1000 calorie deficit goal. I actually saw 194 on my scale today but I'm going to wait till monday to update it to see if the loss is real!

Miles can you lock the kitties out of the bedroom? They're probably getting use to you also! I actually have 5 cats in my house now. Three are my own and 2 are fosters looking for a home

You can see my cats and my foster babies here

srmb60 05-18-2006 08:28 AM

Good Morning everyone!
It's raining here but that's not going to knock me off my cloud nine. I feel good!
I had a deficit of about 900 cals yesterday.

BlynC 05-18-2006 01:25 PM

Well good afternoon everybody! Wow I have some catching up to do! I was out of town and not connected for a couple of days:( so I have nothing good to report! (unfortunately

Susan...(you tiny little thing) Your family is beautiful. I am so glad that the wedding went well!

Lena:..you got that cycling thing figured out yet?..LOL.. I tried to cycle but I have a hard time getting away from the hi cal days once I start.
Donna: Me too! I want to hear about the trainer. I have been thinking of getting one.

Miles : Are you about through with the move? I know that when we moved our store to a new location, it wrecked havoc on my eating and exercising..yikes I wouldn't want to move again!...hate moving!

Okay for me...I have still been unable to get everything logged in to the computer or even written on paper...grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.....It makes me so mad. (but obviously not mad enough to do anything about it)..I am still eating fairly well and have been taking my dog and puppy on a walk every day! 10,000 steps is still really hard for me. I usually average about 7-8 thousand steps a day...Well now I guess the Pity Party is over and I will get my butt on track. I feel like I am on a slippery slope...and after reading my post preview.. it does sound like a pity party :yikes: Okay enough of that !!! See ya later Blyn

Less of Lena 05-18-2006 04:14 PM

Afternoon, everyone!

Well, my cycling experiment hasn't gone exactly as planned (partially because I didn't have a plan until Tuesday night!), but it is sort of in motion. I had planned for a hi cal day yesterday (because I planned for a hi intensity workout) but it ended up being one of my lowest cal days in months. Had a tiny bit of an upset which threw my schedule off :). See How many calories burned in hysterics?

Here's how the week has gone so far (mind you, this is JUST calories eaten):

Sunday -- 2,112 (had planned for high and did high)
Monday -- 1,517 (planned for moderate and did moderate)
Tuesday -- 1,460 (planned low, did moderate)
Wednesday -- 1,207 (planned high, did low)

Today so far, 1,246... not sure where I'll end up, moderate or high. According to plan, today was supposed to be low, but given yesterday I could afford to go high. On the other hand, I'm not sure if I want to go high so close to my "official" weigh-in day (Saturday).

Bottom line, I'm still working it all out, but I *think* it's coming together. It'll be interesting to see what the scale says. Of course, it may take a few weeks to register... my body is soooooooooo slow to respond. Unless I eat a cupcake and then BAM -- 5 newly discovered pounds instantaneously.

-------------------------------

Glad to hear you're so chipper, Susan! A 900 deficit will do that, eh? :)

Nice one, Valerie! Keeping fingers crossed for you for Monday!

Hehe Miles, I was trying to be so good yesterday and doing exercise and then... well, my little unwanted houseguest changed my plans (see link above).

Donna, how did things go? Do you like the food plan?

Valerie Joy 05-18-2006 09:52 PM

Susan great deficit yesterday! :cp:

Lena you're doing a great job! I can tell you're very organized!

Donna how is the training going?

Thursday: 1639 calories, 1023 deficit, 40 minutes cardio, 20 minutes weights

srmb60 05-18-2006 10:25 PM

Hi Valerie! Not so good today. I only had about a 300 cal deficit. Which wouldn't be too bad but some of my calories were from smoked pork and alcohol. Yick! From me who advocates CLEAN food. Oh dear!

Less of Lena 05-19-2006 10:06 AM

Morning all!

I don't think I've ever had smoked pork, Susan. I had smoked turkey once. Tasted like ham. I like turkey. I like ham. But I want each of them to taste like themselves! It was like biting into a Chips Ahoy and having it taste like an Oreo. Mind... can't... process...

Wow, you're a dynamo, Valerie! keep up the good work, dear!

I hear you about the 10k steps, Blyn. I tried so hard and I've done it on occasion, but have fallen off the 10k wagon. Now, I'm lucky to get 10k once a week. Most of my days range between 5-7k and I'm ok with that. I'm still walking and moving way more than I did back in December and before. I think you're doing great at 7-8K!

Yesterday for me was... ok. Did good up until evening. Then I started lusting  for this fabulous roasted turket breast sleeping in the fridge. Tried everything to resist, but eventually, I just submitted. Chowed down on about 5 oz. Ooooooooo sooooo good! Boosted my calorie count for the day, but hey better to boost with good ol' protein turkey than with half a pack of Chips Ahoy, right? Total eaten for yesterday = 1,701.

Deficit for the week so far = 3,625. I hope that reflects on the scale on Saturday!

blues4miles 05-19-2006 10:38 AM

Forgot to stop by here yesterday, yes BlynC things have been a bit hectic with the move. I ate a bit too much on Wednesday but I think I did enough lifting/carrying to make it a 0 deficit day. Deficit of about 424 yesterday (maybe I wasn't hungry from eating so much the day before?). Anyways, food choices haven't been winners. It is weird having to start all over again in terms of food in the house. We've done a good amount of shopping so far, but it just seems like so much is missing. Our dishwasher has been leaking (or should I say shooting streams of water) into the sink when it's running so hopefully they will fix that today and I can get the rest of our dishes clean. I might buy some soup too, I moved closer to the coast and there is nothing like soup on a cold and gray day. Take care ladies!

srmb60 05-19-2006 11:12 AM

When I won that meat a few weeks ago, I couldn't resist the thought of smoked pork chops on the bbq. They are delicious! While not what I consider clean (preservatives and crap) they are small and the cal count isn't too bad.

Valerie Joy 05-19-2006 10:50 PM

Good job on the deficits everyone!

Lena I wouldn't feel bad about the turkey at all! It's great protein and you're total calories were not that high!

Susan
now you're making me want to have some barbeque. Gosh I'm so hungry today!

I had another high calorie day today. I had to wake up at 7:30 which I'm not use to. I worked both my jobs and went to work out.

Something about being really tired makes me want to eat, eat eat!

Friday, 2017 calories, 670 deficit, 45 minutes curves

srmb60 05-20-2006 07:43 AM

I had a hungry day yesterday too. I haven't even been to fitday yet this morning cuz I know what a whole bag of popcorn can do to the deficit I'd planned ... pop pop pop gone! I'm all puffy! Blich!
My mini mission for today should be to clean up, real clean food for at least one day.
