Diet Coaches/Buddies - Eating on plan (CREDIT moi) had two highlights: I ignored platters of factory made cookies of three different kinds that I happen to like - had none, as in zero; I took plastic containers to dinner with DW at our favorite Thai Restaurant so that we could both bring home half our meal for a second dinner. I'm not fond of the Styrofoam clam shell take-out containers, so just brought our own. I also wanted to test my new one-shoulder back pack bargain purchase from a yard sale; it's kinda fun, it feels more casual than a normal backpack and faster to slip on and off. I wouldn't climb a mountain with it, but carrying takeout home from dinner was just right.

My body thinks that I've forgotten how to exercise. I just got busy and didn't. Except to walk to dinner, OK, CREDIT moi for that. I sometimes forget that the walking I've incorporated into my life also counts, even when I don't get take a planned long excursion. Got hit over the head with one-more-new-study showing that exercise, particularly walking, delays Alzheimer's.

Joy (gardenerjoy) – Ouch for continuing drama. Here's hoping that the next round of phone calls will provide the break through needed. I wish my mind would just forget phrases such as, "Let's order pizza."

Debbie (Lexxiss) – Congrats to the new Step Grandma. Hope the mom and kid are thriving. Kudos for stellar responses to a series of whack-a-mole challenges in your day.

Nature Girl – Just savoring your hiking "through towering pine trees" - what a way to live. With a Bing Cherry on top, no less.

Tazzy - Welcome home new puppy. LOL about your sun flowers, "see them growing" - you might experience that with the new puppy as well. Kudos for 15,620 steps with so much up and down.

Ann (Newlifestyle) - Thanks for "This too shall pass" - a good antidote to several of the exaggerated thinking's that Beck discusses.

Elizabeth (Elizabeth779) - Yay for sharing your Advantage List with your girlfriend - it's great to have folks who understand how we're thinking. Kudos for relaxation CD's instead of comfort food - good Beck stuff there.

Good morning,
Today started out great and I hope it continues that way. I walked on the treadmill as it is still really hot outside, ate my smoothie, and played peggle with DS. I will have to go make lunch and then I am off to work. Who knew a part time job involved so many days. Two to three days suits me fine.

Bill- What a great plan to take your own containers to the restaurant. I rarely take leftovers because I am not keen on the styrofoam containers.
Thanks for the reminder that the walking I do counts as exercise too.

Debbie, congrats on your new grand baby. Great job with all the stress hiccups in your day.

Joy, I hope all the stress with family business gets calmer.

Tazzy - how exciting for you to have a new puppy. How lucky for the puppy being matched with you.

Nature girl, where you live sounds so beautiful.

Elizabeth, I think I could incorporate a relaxation cd into my life. Thanks for giving me that thought.

Onebyone- Thinking of you, wishing all went well in Ottawa.

Maryann - I hope you are having a great week. My thoughts are with you.

Hello to everyone else out there. Have a great day.
Take Care
Ann

My choice at an unfamiliar restaurant was reasonable -- especially my choice to have two small bites and no more of the pasta side which turned out to be macaroni in alfredo sauce. The two small bites proved to myself that I don't even like that sort of thing any more.

DH developed sudden-onset eye floaters yesterday with the accompanying stress of trying to figure out if that's the sort of thing you call a doctor for on a Sunday. It turns out it is. We went to the eye doctor's office first thing this morning. The advice is always have new floaters checked. It's usually a benign thing but it's a symptom for a retinal tear which needs to be diagnosed and treated ASAP. Fortunately, DH's retina is fine so he just needs to give his brain time to tune out the floaters.

Elizabeth779: night eating is a challenge for lots of us. I've experimented with a number of strategies and it varies over time which works better. The best, for me, is to go upstairs away from the kitchen and do something else -- taking a bath and/or going to bed being the most fool-proof. At various times, I've allowed myself some specific snack after supper -- candied ginger or popcorn -- but nothing else is allowed. Other times, I've mentally closed the kitchen after supper clean-up.

BillBlueEyes: I just saw a statistic this morning that New Yorkers have a longer life expectancy than the rest of the country in spite of higher stress, air pollution, and other urban dangers. The explanation is that New Yorkers walk.

Had to postpone my hike this morning due to thunder & a downpour, but that kept the dust down and activated the sage so the air smelled amazing. Went 6 minutes further up the hill--tomorrow will be a bike day because I've got a blister developing.
Goals for today: arms and abs exercises, plan food for day, two more applications.
Three insights I worked out on the trail:
-That fancy drink I indulged in the other night wasn't even any good - the only part I liked was the vodka--so next time think before you "indluge"
-Fresh ripe nectarines w/yogurt really do satisfy when your mind is on dessert
-Only about a third of the hike feels like its going to kill you, and you feel so good afterwards--totally worth it!
Tazzy, I got off this site after responding about puppy proofing and my SIL who is a 4th year vet student was on Facebook talking to a friend whose Mastiff puppy was eating dish towels and then um, "leaving" them in the yard. Good luck with that puppy proofing!
Gardenerjoy, Isn't it interesting how our tastes change but our brains don't know it yet? We still think we crave the old unhealthy, over-rich stuff.

Hi Everyone,

Dexter is now home with us and will take some time to settle in. He's quite comfortable in the house and loves his new dog bed and toys. Not too crazy about the crate for sleeping in, he had me up 3 times last night to go outside. At least he has a good strong bark and it's only a couple times to wake me. He didn't make any messes in the house so that's encouraging. It will be interesting to see how DS made out with him today, he knows he had to let him out about every 3 hours and when he called me at work at 8am and asked what time we'd be home I think the reality of having the dog set in and all the work it will be. My guess is that Dexter will sleep alot today. The one good thing was DH was outside with him for 1.5 hours last night and he would usually be sitting in front the computer complaining he was bored! He won't be bored anymore!

The sunflowers are pretty evenly spaced and Dexter looked like he was learning the weave agility game from the dog shows while he was exploring.

Weighed this morning, stayed the same, exercise has been gardening mostly over the weekend. I'll get a morning walk in now before leaving for work as that's my shift with the puppy. Also weighed him this morning and he's 28 pounds. I figure if i pick him up every now and then it will remind me of how much I've lost and don't want back.

I'm going to try and figure out how to attach a photo.

Good Afternoon, Coaches.

Driving back from a three day family camping trip without DH, I nearly had a terrible accident. The bike on the bike rack almost fell off. I had to park on the side of the 5 lane freeway. When I went to get out of the car, I was so flustered I neglected to put the car in park. I hopped back in and braked but it was pretty scary. DS was in the car. A CHP stopped to slow traffic by me. So many things could have gone wrong. I am still jittery. My last post was about me feeling out of control and it took today's event to make me take action. I need to do less. I need to say, "No." I cancelled the scheduled basketball camp for this week. I am staying home all week except for DS piano lesson. I am not scheduling ANYTHING ELSE that requires me leaving home for the next four months. I already have one event a month scheduled till December. That is plenty.

I don't know what I am running from but it can get me killed.

Credit for staying OP this weekend with family and little sleep. This is a miracle. Credit for not jumping into food to make me feel less scared about what might have happened. Yoga Tomorrow.

Hope to catch up on Personals tomorrow since I will be HOME.

I'm going to start having a personal Beck quote of the week for a while -- going to learn some of these principles like I'm 6 years old and it's a Bible verse.....I typed this in MS Word -- not losing stuff NO MO!!

Here is the Beck Page 30 I typed:

"The inner argument between sabotaging thoughts and helpful thoughts can make you feel tense. The tension is unpleasant. Often, you’ll try to alleviate that tension by deciding to eat. But before you eat, take note: Interestingly, what usually happens is that you find your tension abating as you reach for the food – before you put the food in your mouth. However, just as the decision to eat can reduce tension, the decision not to eat can also reduce tension.”

Hi Coaches!

It's been busy here. Yesterday afternoon we went back to Denver to return the pup to the new parents. I hadn't eaten but an apple at work and I stopped to think through the evening before departing. I paused, and reflected how much my Beck skills help me stay OP in day to day life. We had a snack at home then stopped at a favorite Asian fusion place for a yummy salad before proceeding onward. I knew physical hunger WOULD come and didn't want to get to the family event before eating. credit for OP eating and weighing every day.

I'm hoping the week slows down a bit.

BBE, I love the description, "factory made cookies". Thx. Kudos for not even one.

MaryAnn, I hope you are finding some peace today after your scary event.

everyone else! Keep up the great work.

Diet Coaches/Buddies - Good day at the gym, CREDIT moi. Watched a muscular guy pick up the 100# dumbbells to to the same chest press that I was doing with 55# dumbbells. Good thing that I don't even think of comparing. Walked to do an errand; came home soaked with sweat mostly from the heat, not the exertion.

Eating was on plan, CREDIT moi. No real temptation emerged since I've removed the foods that were part of my over snacking. We picked a zillion more cukes from the garden; DW promises gazpacho for dinner tonight. I'm psyched.

Joy (gardenerjoy) – Stopping at two bites of an unneeded pasta dish is so sane. Need to learn that.

Debbie (Lexxiss) – Kudos for keeping to a plan to avoid physical hunger before a family event.

Nature Girl – DW would so love to have your downpour - we remain without rain here. Neat perspective that only one third of a hike feels like it's gonna kill you.

maryann - Yep, Super Kudos for "not jumping into food to make me feel . . . " - food doesn't seem to solve feelings. Ouch for the near accident. Glad to hear that one of those neat California Highway Patrol guys stepped in helpfully.

Tazzy - You're gonna have to starve yourself if you attempt to match your loses to Dexter's gain, LOL. Love hearing about the puppy; I remember those days.

Ann (Newlifestyle) - Yay for an indoor treadmill when it's too hot to be outside. You made me go google 'peggle' - looks fun.

Elizabeth (Elizabeth779) - Ouch for the late night popcorn and cake. One thought is to write down your evening snack the day before - it's easier to follow a plan than to "behave rationally." Good luck. I like the Beck reminder that the decision to not eat can also reduce tension.

I super-sized a snack in order to ward off the hunger that I had on Saturday. Interesting experiment, but I won't do that again. An extra snack in response to true physical hunger is better than eating too much just in case I might be hungry later. The first would be rare and in control, the second holds the seed for completely out-of-control behavior around food.

Thumbs up Wednesday

Diet Coaches/Buddies - On plan included dinner of gazpacho on the patio, CREDIT moi. OK, it was gazpacho with our cukes but purchased tomatoes. But joyous, lovely, yummy gazpacho. Protein came from cheese toast made with a smokey cheese. Also had a cuke salad with my lunch. Yay for summer.

Walked (CREDIT moi) in 98 degree F. Stopped at Whole Foods for peanut butter, which had gone up in price - from $2.99 per pound to $3.00 per pound. Go figure. Had planned to be noble and avoid all the FREE samples. Then made the weird decision to walk through the store to count how many temptations I'd skipped. I skipped six cheese, crackers and/or dips of various kinds. Then fell for a small cup of sponge cake with fresh whipped cream - neither rare nor unusual, but beyond my willingness to just say NO. Ouch. Fortunately, it was small and I only had one. Gotta remember how easy it was the times I walked straight from my purchase to checkout without dallying about seeking temptations.

Joy (gardenerjoy) – I find it a challenge to give up the notion of stocking up for future unavailability of food. It's new to me lately to leave the house over a period that spans my planned snack and NOT have to take it with me. But, when I'm really busy, I don't miss or need my snack; skipping it is just fine.

Debbie (Lexxiss) – Yay for being aware of using your Beck skills to stay OP on a daily basis. Puppies and small children are even more wonderful when they can be returned to their new parents, LOL. Hope your week slows down.

Elizabeth (Elizabeth779) - Love the notion of learning Beck strategies like you were a "6 years old and it's a Bible verse."

DH's eye problems are ongoing. We went back to the eye doctor yesterday and he's going to a retina specialist today. It's still probably fine, but if they can detect and fix any tears as soon as possible, it's much easier than if the retina detaches which is what can happen if you ignore it.

I desperately wanted to eat over everything, mostly the way this is impacting my schedule and, especially, my ability to get any writing done. For the most part, I resisted (CREDIT), but I did have a larger than necessary serving of my homemade frozen yogurt with the justification that it's wholesome. But that's not a helpful thought for me -- I'm quite capable of overeating wholesome foods.

Good Morning, Coaches.

Things have been quiet for the last two days. I have been OP for 12 days. I am one pound below ticker. My head says, "12 days and one pound down is terrible. Something is wrong." This thinking sets me up fall off the wagon. The real truth is my diet has been extremely healthy. It is moderate weightloss I am after and it is better than the pound above ticker I was two weeks ago. All in all, I am please with the new food program. The no dairy is a big change. DS has never been crazy for cheese or milk so things seem to be an easy transition. I just have to be vigilant he gets his calcium - Almond milk, tofu, legumes etc...

See how everything seems reasonably easy when I am not over scheduled? I am keeping to that commitment as well.

Family wedding this weekend. My goal was to be below 160. We'll see.

Gardenerjoy: Absolutely understand the ability to overeat healthy. In my case it is always about keeping the stomach full, with whatever will do the trick.
BBE: That last circle around the store is always the most treacherous.

Put off my bike ride yesterday am because I was applying, then last night a tremendous thunderstorm (with flash flood warnings and everything!) hit and stayed for 2 hours, complete with downpour. So this am I go going right away on the bike, even though it threatened to be too hot. It wasn't and I'm glad I did it!
Yesterday's food detour was tacos at Jack in the Box, bought to share with DD, eaten by me after I ate my 99 cent chicken san. Why did I do that? Mostly thoughtlessness and keeping busy while we waited for an appointment...silly.
Oh yeah - weigh in yesterday am- down 1 lb. Yes! I knew that 7 lbs in 2 weeks was not sustainable, simply the jump start you get at the beginning, so I'm good with a pound or so a week. Down is good!
My mom saw her surgeon yesterday and all is well--my brother left so they're on their own but she sounds ready for it, and we filled their freezer and adapted the house so they should be fed and safe. May go back in August (depending on job situation) just to visit Glacier again...1/2 day was not enough and we can also check in w/ her progress.
Today: more applications, more heat in the 90s, more healthy eating...same old, same old, I hope.
