underwire? what's that? I think i forgot. *LOL*
haven't had a bra with an underwire in it since I was about 15 years old. In fact, I can't even find a sportsbra that is big enough. Poor me. *L* Bra in a box for me. Oh yes, it's so ugly they have to put it in a box and label it "Just My Size" which really means "Oh My God you're WHAT size?!" Which is what hubby said as he was "helping" me pick one out last week. If only there was a way to get that smug little bow out of the center without tearing the bra.... i'm a grown woman, i do not need a bow on my bra. Gr. *L* |
HAHAHA!!! I can relate!! I can't wear underwires anymore either. I'm about a 40DD (but they are kinda tight) and underwires stick me in the underarms because I am so SHORT!!! Getting into them is like "GET THE FORK LIFT......WE'RE MOVING THE BIG ONES!!!"

I remember being at a party once wearing an underwire. (YEARS ago.) I felt something poking me in the chin, and I glanced down and one of the damned wires had broken through the fabric and had worked its way up towards my face.

I am a 38DD ladies....
Here is my problem-I have no problem finding bras that are sturdy enough for me-I think the Just My Size are Great, as well as Bali brand-but I HAVE to have underwire. Both brands make great sturdy underwire-especially Bali. Not the thin underwire in the pretty pastel bras like in size 34B-heavy duty stuff. My problem is that I am a DD cup-and I am not super large around the ribcage-I am an hourglass figure, so I have a smaller ribcage and waist-with the big boobs and butt. I have to usually order them online or in the One Hanes Place Catalog to get my size. Why? Because who ever works at Wal-Mart or Elder Beerman or wherever I am does not think that you can have DD boobs without being large around the ribcage. Everywhere I go carries a C or D cup in 38, but no DD. DD's usually start at 40 band size....GGGGRRRR. I can't even fathom what Pamela Anderson had to do to get a bra-being an un-natural 32-34 DD.....because I know stores don't carry those! She probably had Frederick's of Hollywood MAKE them for her! When are they going to realize that us 34-38's can have DD boobs, and that is it just as possible to have a woman with a 46-48 band size to have a measly B cup?!!!!!!!! Carry every size that they make! :censored: Aphil |
I agree completely!!! I was a 38 DD for a long time. I started ordering from Hane's catalog....
Ellis-TOO FUNNY!!!!!!! |
Ellis - similar has happened to me before as well. Usually when I was out in public (like at school) and couldn't do anything about it.
I remember once I tried a bra from Lane Bryant that had these small push up pads in them. Well, here I am at work and I feel something go "plunk" on my foot... Low and behold - it's a bloody pad from my bra. so here i am at the counter not able to go anywhere with one uplifted boobie and one not so uplifted boobie and wondering if the guy i'm waiting on noticed! UGH. That one went in the garbage can. Oh, and once in junior high a boy came up behind me and snapped my bra and the damned thing came unhooked but I didn't notice until my next class when it was coming up out of the top of my shirt. THAT was fun. My M-I-L always wears an underwire bra and i know this because every time i see her she has these two little bumps poking up out of her cleavage where the wires are poking up through her shirt. It's REAL sexy. *LOL* |
Underwire bras should always be hand washed and laid flat to dry...washing machines and dryers can weaken them and make the casing for the underwire break and come out in the front or under your arm...which feels great when it stabs you in the armpit.
They are also more likely to do that if the bra doesn't fit properly...which it sounds like you MIL's doesn't. Aphil |
Hahahaha! Bras, such a nightmare. I hate shopping for them, and then I wish I had. I do like sports ones but do not like the uniboob created therein, all smushed together. I wear black when/if I run to minimize the appearance of bounce.
Yeah Ellis, I remember the good old rubbery days. Used to do the pencil test and feel very smug thinking of my poor middled-aged mother (never realizing that that was the shape of things to come, as it were). Lidian:) |
Oh my...
Lizzy, when you said the word "plunk" I had this wild vision of your BOOB popping out of the bra and plunking down onto your shoe. I was thinking, c'mon, they can't be that droopy. ;)
|
Aphil! They have to be hand washed!? No wonder I had problems!!
Lizzi, too funny. I remember in grade 8... I was so small (32 AA) at the time that EVERY DAY my bra would work it's way up so that it was visible around my neckline. I like the smushed effect, Lidian. I don't have a big "chest", but my ribcage is large, and I don't like looking like a Dolly in my bra when all I've really got is a couple of crab apples. :D |
Yeah, actually all bras (except sprts bras) are supposed to be hand washed and laid out to dry-due to all of the elastic, lycra, underwire and other supporting materials...machine washing them can warp them, weaken the elastic, etc.
They are also supposed to be snug enough that they don't ride up in the back-like if you stand to the side and the back of the bra is up 4 inches higher on your shoulder blades-it is too loose. It should be even all the way around-if it rides up, get a size smaller in the band. Sure, it isn't as comfy-but if it is riding in the back, it means your boobs are dropping lower in the front-and not being supported like they should be. There are actually a lot of good sports bras out now that have separated cups so they don't give you uniboob...a lot of places sell them. They are pretty nice. Aphil |
Thank you, Aphil... I went to Zellers yesterday and bought myself three new bras. :D And I specifically looked for the sports bras with separate cups. I haven't tried them on yet, but I'm pretty excited. (I HATE trying on clothes in the store!)
|
Sojo - hehehe. that's funny. actually, now that i am a little bit older... they probably could.
as for the pencil test... HAH! I'm thinking more along the lines of a can of hairspray or maybe a roll of papertowels will fit under there. a small child or a monkey... *LOL* i can't even tell all the lovely things i've found in there - what i refer lovingly to as "the shelf" *L* hubby says i make a good pillow though. my bra's do that crawl up in the back thing - but if i get one any smaller it feels like i have heartburn or something, i feel all constricted. |
Separated cups, hand wash only - I didn't know, thank you, Aphil! And Ellis, I am going to Zellers ASAP - any brand recommendations?
Lidian |
Well, Lidian... right now I am wearing a Nevada. It's grey. Looks pretty sporty, but I didn't realize it had underwires. And separate cups! Goodness me... I can't stop LOOKING at myself! I think I look a little slimmer... yet more feminine. snicker.
DH said to me today, "You're wearing one of your new bras!" I thought... how sweet... he noticed my separate cups! But he said, "I can see your bra strap." You know, the other two (can't remember the brands) were $15 each, but this one was only 5 bucks! What a bargain! Haven't worn adjustable straps for years, though. Not quite sure what to do with them. One of the others is a black sports bra with separate cups and a sort of a lining thingy. Maybe it's padding... or maybe it's like a double grip. Other one is pale blue. I'll give you the low-down on the comfort level tomorrow. :D |
