We are a rainbow of unique wonders,
There is love in us.
(poem by Dorothy Holmes)

Tell us a little about your life, family and goals. What keeps you motivated? What is the best thing that's happened to you when you turned 50? 60? 70? Friends laugh, cry and stand by each other, we'll be that to you!

Thank you for the new thread Bobbi ~ Happy Fall to you as well.

love2garden 09-15-2015 02:07 PM

Bobbie You must check with us now and then to realize how lippy we are.

Gayle Thinking of you as I choose NO arthritis yesterday after so many hours working in the garden, and amazed I'm hardly sore at all. I may have been taking it too often before my Doctor really cautioned me, with my ease of bruises that I need to go some days each week without the Alieve that helps so much.

Actually the hydrolic acid in the sack at my knee is such a good cushion that I truly don't have the pain I did before I began the shots. I'm so fortunate that they give me so much help. Last one June 2, and hopefully I can finish 2015 without having to take the shots again.

Another comfortable day outside and it was a real pleasure carrying the watering cans of Miracle Grow to put on those many, many pots. We really enjoy those annuals that bloom and bloom. We can see some of them out of every window in the house. Love watching the red Miscanthus feathers move with the slightest bit of breeze. In back it is the tall Silver Grass that gives the movement with the breeze.

Reminds me of waves in water of the Mountain Streams we love to fish in.

Called a dear friend in the Hospital and she cheers me up! She is super intelligent and has great humor. I'm always ready to talk with her. She is suffering terribly but never inflicts her pain on any of us. Amazing woman.

Enjoying September, Sandy

Hi Everyone, making marinated chicken & veggies tonight. Interested to ask my new doctor about the long-term effects of cutting out dairy & grains. Seems to me that this might be OK for a while, but NOT a good idea forever. Tomorrow, going to lunch & to see Learning to Drive. Has anyone seen it?

Have a nice evening,

Lynn

From Sandy, “Lynn where would you find Marshmallow root? What side effects does it have. I well know the problems with Prevacid from friends.” And, “…I need to go some days each week without the Alieve that helps so much.”

Hi Sandy, I got it from my new doctor, but probably available in health food stores or online. It’s a liquid & I take 3 dropper-fulls in a little water every morning. Doesn’t taste good, but only takes 1 swallow. One of the reasons I want to get rid of the Celebrex (same family as Aleve) is because of the indigestion & esophageal problems it has caused me.

From Karrine, “LadyinWeighting, Hope you enjoyed the arts and crafts show. I would like something like that. Hey - great that you are down another 3 lbs!! Also, good for you in being able to drop some of your meds and that you see good physical benefits and for losing 5 MORE LBS!!!”

Hi Karrine, show is this coming weekend. Looking forward to it. Thank you for the “congrats.” I appreciate the support.

From Carol, Lynn, good for you getting off those meds and feeling so much better.

Hi Carol, I am really anxious to get rid of some more. Thank you for your support. I have depended on you & the other Golden Girls through this process.

From Gayle, “Nobody can force you to have a certain attitude. But life will go so much better if you will simply choose to be positive. When you wake up, choose to be happy. Choose to be grateful for the day.” (Joel Osteen)

Hi Gayle, my DF has a saying that reminds me of this – in the wheels of life, you are either the grease or the sand. I try hard to be the grease as often as I can.

Maryea Thanks for the great words of welcome. I think your idea of eating for health is a good one. Honestly, I think that if we eat healthfully it does not matter if there are 10 extra pounds. I think health is more important. Eating FOR health. So thumbs up.

wannabehealthy Thanks for the welcome. Yes Vermont is a great place to live. As long as people like the cold.
I too have acid. If you want to watch a good video about marshmallow root, or hear about the non prescription things I take that were recommended by the naturopath or my MD, just pm me.

Ladyinweighting Thanks for the welcome. Hope you have a good time in Deerfield.

Glynne Thank you for the welcome. And words of encouragement. Congrats on losing a part of a pound !

Love2garden, thanks for your lovely words :) They made me smile.
Sounds like you had a great time in the garden. Aren't flowers and plants amazing? Oh i do love them.

Karrine I hope they can figure out the internal bleeding source. And easily correct it. I am SO sorry that's happening to you  As for the problem with the bold names, what you are doing looks fine. Perhaps you will start a new trend :D I am sending good thoughts your way for the physical challenges.

Bobbolink, it seems you are the keeper of the thread :D thank you for that. And for the words you wrote !

Well, those are my replies from the previous thread. Seeing that it is past 1 in the morning (1:23 to be exact :) ) I will have to read the posts on this new thread tomorrow.

lost .6 lbs today. And then I decided after PT to go to Trader Joes and get some Turkey Jerky and a 3 oz bag of popchips. Yes, they are not on the diet. So my daily intake out of wack. Increased by about 400 calories and a whole lot of carbs. My weakness is hot chocolate. I will call it what it really is. An addiction :D I use stevia and cashew milk which is low in calories. AND I use a cocoa powder blend that's low in calories. But I do tend to drink way too much of the stuff. WAY too much. Consequently weight loss is slow. Anyway, I found a hypnosis recording through a thread at 3FC. I am hoping it helps. Today was day 6.

I hope everyone has a great Wednesday doing enjoyable things.

Hi!

I am happy to be back among the living! I had several more surgeries and then surgeries for the surgeries -- lol! I am adjusting after hernia surgery and the mesh is giving me some pain on and off, but I am trying to do careful and gentle exercise and it really has helped to get in the pool to walk every day. I still am unable to walk far on land so I use a wheelchair, but the water makes everything easier than ever when you are not dealing with the physics of gravity!

I joined this group last July and at the time was recovering from stage one ovarian cancer. Then after having everything removed it weakened the abdominal wall, requiring me to have hernia surgery. Then more c-spine surgery for no reason because I had not been in any sort of accident -- but in two more surgeries I am going to be through all of this. I am going to get well. The physical therapists that come to my home think I am going to make an impressive recovery. I will not have the same body, but I will adapt to the one that has healed and be able to do well.

I put up the most authentic pic that captures me, taken last year with my beautiful little Siamese lilac point and she made it to 16. I am 55 in that pic. I am now 56. I am a composer/guitarist. I studied and lived in Boston/Cambridge for most of my life, but was born in MN, so Hi Bobbolink!!! Wonderful to see a Minnesotan! My group did Keillor, and we are Prairie Home fans! Also, one of the best Ren Faires in the US is in MN and my comedy troupe has enjoyed performing there.

I am a fan of Geneen Roth. She has helped me truly understand food and especially how women relate to food. I am glad to see threads for women my age because in all honesty, I am just not young enough to know everything ... he-he!

Sincerely, Ms Hatcher

Karrine 09-16-2015 07:12 AM

Good morning ladies,
I got a pretty good report from the doctor yesterday in that my red blood cell count is still low but hasn't worsen so we are going to wait for another three months to check it again. If it does go any lower than I'll have to have more procedures.
The bad news is my tenant went to the doctor yesterday and it looks like she might have shingles. I feel so bad as she probably got it from me. It is only contagious if you haven't had chicken pox or measles and she doesn't remember if she has had either of them. She is 78 years old so it will be hard on her.

Sandy - your gardens sound to be very beautiful. I enjoy gardening but I don't have as much variety as you have.

Flower - thank you for your comforting words. That hot chocolate drink sounds yummy but perhaps you could try to cut back on the number you have in a day. Let us know if the hypnosis recording works.

Ms. Hatcher - welcome back. Your story about all your surgeries; complications and limited abilities truly makes it difficult to even think about weight loss. You seem to be a very strong person and I wish all the very best for you. P.S. Your picture is beautiful. I need to get a more recent one up for myself and should get a friend to take a new pic of me.

Have a good day everyone,
Karrine

Karrine 09-16-2015 07:40 AM

Ms Hatchling - I'm sorry I spelled your name wrong in my first post and I'm also forgot to say that although it seems to be so very difficult to lose weight under your circumstances I'm sure that one day at a time and not giving up will ultimately show a weight loss.
Good luck to you.
Karrine

Wannabehealthy 09-16-2015 08:32 AM

Karrine, doctors can't seem to agree whether shingles are contageous or not. When I got them, there were 5 other people at work who had them, but I was around DH constantly, sleeping in the same bed, etc, and he didn't get them. Years later there was a woman in the waiting room of our doctors office who was in extreme pain and we thought she might have shingles. Within a week, DH had them. So, it seems that we got them from other people, but for some reason, no one got them from us. After DH had them I got the shot, because I didn't want to get them again. If a person didn't have chicken pox, they cannot get shingles, but they can get chicken pox from someone who has shingles. I hope your tenant is OK.

Welcome to Ms Hatcher.

maryea 09-16-2015 04:23 PM

Hello everyone and welcome to Ms Hatcher! I have been keeping busy...shopping for a new entry door..has to be the "right" one as we do not plan on getting another one like most things we are doing on our house these days. We have to have the whole entry area done so it is going to be more expensive than we originally thought but worth it I'm sure. I'm trying to decided between two companies right now. And of course today I am also doing the prep for the procedure tomorrow. Ugh!

Ms Hatcher - So sorry about all your surgeries. As someone who's had several myself I know it's difficult to see a day when it's all over, but it will come. I too notice that my body is never quite the same but you adapt and of course in some ways it is better if it eliminated a problem.

Flower - I think we all have something that we get kind of hooked on. For me it is my pb mocha frappes. I make my own so they aren't as high in calories or carbs as they sound, quite a bit of fat though esp with the pb. I normally add extra fiber and protein powder. I wish I could have one right now! I hope the hynosis tape helps. I have a couple and thought they helped me a little, however I can never get myself to lay down and listen to them regularly. It is very restful though.

Karrine 09-17-2015 06:01 AM

Good morning ladies,

Carol - Thank you for the information on shingles. I guess the information
sheet the doctor handed out is completely correct.

Mary - Good luck for your colonoscopy procedure today. I know it isn't pleasant so I'll be thinking of you. I'm sure you will love your new front entrance once it is finished.

I have new neighbours that moved in during August. I have a semi-detached house so their property joins into mine in the front so I have been cutting their grass for them along with my own to be neighbourly. Yesterday afternoon the man who lives there came over and said he will gladly cut my lawn every week for me starting today. He will need to use my lawnmower as he doesn't have one yet. I was flabbergasted and thanked him telling him that my lawn mower really is getting harder for me to use each year. I offered to pay him but he won't have that so I'll get him a gift at the end of the season. Perhaps a case of beer? I don't know what he likes. I have a snow blower so I'll be able to do a little bit at the end of their driveway & their front sidewalk to reciprocate. They have 3 cars in their driveway so that would stop me from doing too much for them.

That's all my news for today.
Karrine

Karrine 09-17-2015 06:02 AM

Carol - LOL I meant to say the information sheet is NOT completely correct.

Wannabehealthy 09-17-2015 10:18 AM

I woke up early this morning, around 6, but I fell back to sleep and didn't get up until 9:15. I was really surprised that I slept that late. I should feel better today.

Karrine, what did the doctor's information sheet say that is different? Don't take what I say as gospel. This is just what I have experienced myself and what I have read online. I am curious as to what the doctor's sheet says.

Karrine 09-17-2015 04:35 PM

Carol - the doctor's sheet was quite simple. That shingles can spread which it did in my case. I got a double dose as it spread on me from my right torso to my left torso. I don't have the sheet anymore but it basically said the only way it can be contagious is if you haven't had chicken pox or measles and approximately how long it lasts. It didn't mention any other potential ways that shingles can affect another person. If you read something on the internet regarding chicken pox it might be something the doctor isn't aware of. I like to go to the Mayo clinic for information and also the web doctor. Regardless, I'm sure you know how terrible it is to go through. I'm going to ask the doctor for the Shingles vaccine next time I go.

love2garden 09-17-2015 07:27 PM

1hatchlingWELCOME from one who is scared of surgery, your survival is amazing. Hope all this medical stuff is over soon and you can learn how to live in the different kind of way it sounds will be necessary.

Karrine I'm sure you are really letting all you know to get the shingles shot. We certainly have done so. Let us know if you still need to take the shot after having such a severe time with Shingles.

Mary hope you are not completely wiped out. Also that the report is good news for you.

Carol The experiences are more to be believed than someone's "professional" information. So sorry that this is one more medical experience that neither of you needed.

I need to count my blessings, so far, to have had so few issues to complain about.

Today was my "me" day with quiet house as DH took car to shop for oil change, took our daughter to get her eyes checked. She didn't need eyes dialated but knew if she did she couldn't drive. Then they went to have lunch, a long lunch and she was glad to have her Dad to herself. He is always glad to get any of our kids in a 'not in a hurry" time together

maryea 09-17-2015 11:14 PM

The colonoscopy went well as far as I know. He did find one polyp and sent it for biopsy, so should know in a few days about that. The prep was nasty as usual but in some ways the process was different and easier this time and i'm thankful for that. It all went very quickly and I felt like I got a good sleep.:) One thing that was different was that I didn't get to talk to the doctor. The nurse gave me his report. I do hope I get to talk with him at some point.
Only side effect was a slight woosiness for a little while afterwards but I was hungry and we stopped for pizza on the way home. I ate 2 1/2 slices and then took a long nap, only getting up because I want to still be able to sleep tonight. The men let me off...didn't have to cook dinner tonight. A good thing...my shoulder wasn't harmed, the nurse gave me pain med for it before the procedure and I had no problem with it that I remember however since I sedated, I wouldn't, but it feels ok, maybe even better right now. :)

maryea 09-18-2015 02:02 PM

Back to usual routine today. Only side effect I notice from yesterday is that I am stiff and sore...feel like I had a good workout! Kinda all over but esp around ribs...when I cough it hurts. And my right arm (the "good" one) was very stiff and hurt when I first woke up. LOL, my left arm which is usually the one that hurts (from shoulder) felt better! Don't remember feeling like this after previous procedures. I lost 3.5# during the process, but I'm sure that will be regained quickly now that I'm back to my usual eating. Yesterday all I ate was the pizza and a couple popsicles though. Just wasn't hungry.

love2garden 09-18-2015 02:24 PM

Mary so glad that is over for you! Strange that the OTHER arm hurt . . . sometimes our bodies are confusing.

I threw up when I sat up after a bit of orange juice. Couldn't eat much rest of day. But as you say the bowels do fill up and scale registers that. I'm amazed you could eat like you were able to do.

I have an appointment in 1-1/2 hours and DH is still not back with the car. I just called to get another to take my place. Luckily she is well enough to do so.

DH's doctor left the horrible outfit he worked for and is going to a different one not too far away. Most of our family goes to them so we were really concerned, especially our youngest daughter who needs her migraine meds refilled and is in real pain as she tries to work, dog sit a friend's large dog at the friend's home, Oh my. Of course this late in the day, no doctor is open.

Our very cool weather has changed to normal September weather finally. I actually turned on the airconditioning for the first time in over a week.

Sandy

maryea 09-18-2015 05:54 PM

The doctor just called me. He said the polyp he found was very very tiny..he said it was a miracle he found it. He said because of the polyp it is recommended I have another colonoscopy in 5 years. I asked him if it was precancerous...and he said depends what you mean by precancerous... in about 25 years it MIGHT be cancer. Sheesh I'll be 97 then, so don't think I'm too concerned. So I'm going to see how I feel about it in five years.

love2garden 09-19-2015 10:10 AM

Mary So glad you asked him about the "Precancerous" 25 years it MIGHT be cancer. . . Come on! If I were 25, I'd feel concerned, but I feel as you do.
I also was told to have another colonoscopy in 5 years, but NO polyps were found. In 25 years I'll be 102 - and don't want to live that long, but do want to enjoy the years I do have.

After two days of light action and lots of good reading, Journaling my thoughts and emotions, I have energy in abundance. I'm even more sure that it is necessary to listen to our bodies regarding our actions.

I did stand hours watering the individual plants in our gardens. Don't believe we've had over an inch of rain since July and the ground is developing deep cracks as it shrinks in areas I don't water.

Today is ironing day as we watch football. I'll be in back of house and as I finish ironing a shirt, I carry it thru the house back to Master Bedroom or to Ted's extra closet. Lots of steps that way and I am not constantly standing.
I began ironing when I was 8 because Mom's arthritis in her knees and hands were so bad. I actually find it satisfactory to see the improvement the iron makes in our clothing.

Did you know they are making jackets out of polypropylene? I bought one that is very wind resistant, yet looks and feels like an expensive leather. It can't be ironed, but I stuffed the arms with towels when it was warm from the hot car, and the wrinkles disappeared. We get some wisdom as we grow older.

May each of you enjoy this day. Sandy

Karrine 09-19-2015 10:48 AM

Good morning ladies

- Mary and Carol - I'm glad your procedure is overwith now and you are feeling back to normal. It sounds like both of you have a better doctor than I do for the colonoscopy. I had mine 6 months ago and the nurse showed me afterward on the Doctor's diagram that he found 5 polyp's yet when I went for my results the doctor just said everything fine, just found a few polyp's. He didn't mention anything about pre-cancerous and that was the end of my appointment. I imagine I will have to have another in 2 years time.....he didn't say.

I'm making a stuffed roast chicken today with veggies and cranberry sauce. I make my own stuffing which I just love and doing a small load of laundry.

Have a good day everyone,
Karrine

Wannabehealthy 09-19-2015 10:51 AM

Good morning ladies. Well, I did it. I ordered a new computer. It is an HP. It has Windows 10 and it is the tower and keyboard only. I think I can use the monitor I have but if not I can buy a new one. Also, we just bought a new printer, so it should be compatible. It seems that they are selling more and more laptops and I wanted to get a new desktop before this one breaks completely. I hope I like this, and even more, I hope DH likes it. I don't care much about features, but only that I can get online with it. He is more picky about it than I am. We paid way too much for the one we have. It should be here Friday.

EDIT: When I found the computer online it said it would be delivered on Tuesday, 9/22, but as I place the order a pop up told me that the delivery date was changed to Friday. Didn't matter to me. It was free shipping. Now I received a confirmation that it has been shipped and the tracking information states a delivery date of Tues, 9/22. It's just coming from Ohio, so Tuesday sounds reasonable.

Mary, I'm glad to hear that your colonoscopy went well and that the polyp wasn't cancerous.

Sandy, I rarely iron anymore. I do it "as needed" when we want to wear something and it's wrinkled. Most of the time clothes get creases from hanging the closet so I don't iron before I put things away. My MIL criticized me for keeping my ironing board up all the time, but it is in the laundry room. Her sister used to keep hers up all the time but it was in the dining room. Big difference!

I also have a faux leather jacket. It was very wrinkled when I bought it but by the time I wore it the wrinkles had hung out of it. I had to put new sheers up in the living room because Rusty tore the old ones. I wanted to wash them before hanging them but DH insisted that the wrinkles from packaging would hang out. Two weeks later the wrinkles are still there, so now we have to take them back down to be washed. Actually, I am just going to wet them and run them in the drying enough so I can hang them back up. They should dry in a matter of minutes.

How is everyone else? Gayle, Lynn, Ms Hatcher, Karrine?

maryea 09-19-2015 04:07 PM

Less sore today...just a little when I cough. We went to our gs's martial art class. First class situation for him. They were all very cute, and the instructor introduced him to the class and made a big deal of him joining. I thought it was neat that they taught them about stranger danger and told them what to do. Then each one practiced it with an instructor. It was the best I've seen on that subject. Went for ice cream (dh and I shared a root beer float as he wasn't hungry and I was more thirsty than hungry) with them afterwards. Then we went shopping. Dh bought a coupon book from our gd who was selling them for school and we were able to use a $5 coupon off our groceries.

Carol Sue - Congrats on the new computer! I have an HP too. I love getting a new one. I hope you like Win 10 as much as I do. If you go to komando.com you can find lots of tips, things you can change for privacy issues etc. Or just go to settings and you may be able to figure it out on your own, get it set up like you and your dh want.

Carol Sue/Sandy - The few times a year I iron are so few that really I think I can say I never iron! I'm not sure I even iron once a year it is so seldom! Dh irons his own clothes as needed and he needs it much more often than I.;)

Karrine - I am a great questioner...I question most everything! So I question my doctors a lot and learn a lot that way that they probably wouldn't volunteer. Your dinner sounds good.

Sandy - You sound like you are in pretty good shape to stand so long. I agree it is important to listen to your body...I believe in that and picking my doctors brain, but then making my own decision and it seems Carol Sue is the same. Once a doctor said to me..."you don't always do what we say, do you?" I said no because when you are done with me, I still have to live in this body. He told me he wished more of his patients were like me. As a former nurse, I've seen too much.

How you doing Lynn, Ms Hatcher?

Karrine 09-20-2015 06:30 AM

Good morning ladies,

Carol - good for you in purchasing a new computer with Windows 10. I am impressed that you and Mary are using this version of Windows. I am still using Windows 7 and afraid to upgrade as I know this version so well. I might be forced to purchase a new computer as mine is always shutting down by itself which I think is a problem of overheating but it is getting plenty of air space. I'll hold off as long as possible lol. but back up my files on a external flash drive.

Just church this morning and I don't know what I will do yet for the rest of today. I have lots of leftovers from my chicken dinner yesterday so that will be good for my diet for this coming week.

Karrine
Have a good Sunday everyone

Wannabehealthy 09-20-2015 10:25 AM

Our weather is going to be perfect for the next few days. Temps in the low 70s and no rain. We had a good rain yesterday. 70s are my kind of weather. You don't need either the air conditioner or the furnace. Saves $$$$ LOL We have such a nice breeze going through from the front door to the back.

Karrine
, I currently have Win 7 and would not upgrade to 8.1. I also was hesitant to take the free Win 10 upgrade for this computer. I don't know how old this computer is but I've had it for several years. It crashed once and we lost everything except the pictures I had backed up on a flash drive, and my recipe file that I had saved on a different flash drive. That recipe file is important! LOL I have been saving recipes from friends on the internet and from websites for 15 years. Even though we got this computer all fixed up for $99, I still have problems occasionally, and I'm not sure if it's from the computer or the monitor. If I still have the same problem after we get the new computer I will know it's the monitor, and they are not expensive.

Most of the computers on the market still have 8.1 and they are advertising a free upgrade to Win 10, since not too many people are happy with 8.1. I will get used to 10 I suppose. DH might be another story. He hates change. This one said NEW beside it and already has Win 10. That's why I chose this one. DH will keep this old computer since it still works, in case we need it.

We bought an external hard drive at the suggestion of the guy who fixed our computer, but I'm not sure how to work it. I want to transfer as much as I can to it before I start using the new computer. I'll figure it out. It's probably similar to saving to the flash drive.

I usually make my own stuffing when I cook a turkey, but I have a couple fat chicken breasts that I want to stuff and I bought a box of Stove-Top for that since it will only be a small amount.

I think it might be because you are in Canada that you did not get more details from your doctor. Maybe you should have asked if the polyps were biopsied, just to be sure. I don't know if Canadian doctors are receptive to patients questioning them.

Mary, we always seem to buy HP and like them.

That Kim Komando is on the radio locally and gives a lot of information and also has a column in the Sunday paper. I will also check out the website.

love2garden 09-20-2015 11:55 AM

Carol I use the external hard drive just like I would a thumb drive, just put it in the UBS port and Computer recognizes it and I copy and save. I back up Quicken to it each time I update. Church stuff and photo's also.

My printer is great HP and is 5 years old and doing well. Computer is over 5 and loaded with Windows 7 professional. Hopefully when I absolutely MUST get new computer I'll get one with Windows 10 loaded, too. I do dread learning how to operate a new system so am putting it off. Hopefully this one will last till next summer.

I never heard of Komando.com but appreciate the info.

We went to the earliest Mass today because I am Reader. We have 2 Sunday Masses and one Saturday night Mass. This means there are some who are in our Parish that I never see because we always go on Sunday.

Finally got a bit of rain overnight, it at least got the sidewalks wet but the grass doesn't stand a chance, yet.

I've been craving Chocolate and picked up a bit when I went to get my RX. Didn't taste as good as I hoped it would. Sometimes I'm better off to just ignore a craving.

Sandy

Hi Everyone, Back from trip to MA. Bought new earrings & a new pocketbook. Stuck to my diet, went to a GREAT arts & crafts show in Deerfield, and saw a GREAT movie - Phoenix.

Looking forward to a VERY busy week. See new doctor on Tuesday; they begin tearing down wallpaper on Wednesday; and Mah Jongg & Tai Chi on Thursday.

maryea 09-20-2015 11:54 PM

All we've done today is go to church and eat out. I ordered a meatloaf entree...not sure why as I usually only like my own meatloaf and not always that if I try a new recipe. It was ok, but I ate very little of it, brought the rest home for my son's lunch. I have gained my 3# I lost with the procedure so back where I was.

Karrine - Win 10 is more like Win 7...they gave us back the start menu, only difference is it is laid out more like Win 8. Other than that, the settings link is in the start menu and the layout is a little different but you can still make changes there. I recommend any new users to change the privacy options as they want them. I rarely use the start menu, I have a bookmark toolbar set up in my browser for all my most used sites so I just load my browser and off I go. I usually only go to the Start menu to change my settings if I feel a need to. If you want you can speak to Cortana and it will do a search for you. I am not interested in that, so just search the usual way. Win 10 also provides a new version of Internet Explorer and you can write on it or highlite text. I continue to use Chrome. That's all the things that are different about Win 10 that I can think of. If you just explore from your browser, it's pretty much the same as 7...I really like it.

Good morning Ladies,

Carol - thank you for all the information on Windows. I too have heard that Windows 8 has numerous problems especially lacking the start button. That recipe file you have built up over 15 years sounds awesome...care to share lol.

Sandy - I use Quicken too and back it up each time I use it. I also constantly back up my genealogy files which I started 30 years ago.

Lynn - Good for you sticking to your diet while away to MA. Hope you enjoyed it.

Mary - Thank you for more information on Windows 10. I am happy to know that it is similar to Windows 7 but with some changes. Looks like I would be best to purchase a preloaded version of Windows 10 when my computer dies.

I didn't get some yard work done yesterday so will do that today. We are having more "fall" temperatures here now and I'm thinking about cutting back some of my perennials in preparation for winter.

Have a good day everyone,
Karrine

My dh and I had a miscommunication this morning which caused us not to go to the gym. He is going fishing this afternoon but I thought he was going this morning, so slept in (or tried to)...and when I got up (9) he thought that was too late, so we didn't go. I think I will use the walking tape my son gave me at Christmas after he goes fishing. I haven't been using my bike as much recently because it makes my left knee hurt. It's not a bad hurt but is irritating. Hope to get the eliptical before long as I hear it's easier on the knees. I am making Caldereta, a Filipino dish, kind of a stew with beef, potatoes, red pepper (only I have to use yellow this time cause that's what I have on hand), olives and of course serving it with rice.

Karrine - I don't know the age or condition of your computer but right now you can get Win 10 free. If you are set up for Win updates, you may have an invite from Win to reserve your upgrade or even download it already in the lower right corner (system tray). If you buy a new computer I think most will come with Win 10 soon if not already.

Need to get to work...have a good day everyone!

I have been in the garden since a little after 9:00 am, over about 5 hours with periods of rest (and water and more water and some coffee). Now a fresh peach with some organic yogurt for my second meal.

I dug up some plants that were burried under the overgrown burning bush. DH cut it back by 1/2 or more several weeks ago. Today I went into the fence and pulled on weeds, cut back perrenials, dug up beautiful red Peony then transplanted some hostas into that area so my neighbor will have pretty view.

In the hole from the Hostas, I put in the red Peony with good soil, gypsum on top to cause clay soil to allow water and oxygen to penetrate, watered all good, then mulched the area. I had more than 2 buckets, 5 gallon size, full of weeds. All is watered very well before I mulched and looks so neat and good. That Peony will get plenty of sunshine now and we'll enjoy it from Dining room window and patio, too.

Lots and lots of hard digging because we have very heavy clay. I added peat moss and broke up the clods, then with the gypsum on top to soften the clay, those plants and their neighboring Daylily and Geraniums will all do better next year.

So sore!!!! Will take Alieve, then a good shower and I"m finished for the day. The second Peony ( beautiful single white) will have to wait till later in the week before I dig it up and put it in the newer part of garden. When I cut it back ttoday I realize I actually have 3 separate plants now. Will have to dig much larger area up before I can get it in.

Once I'm outside, I forget aches or hunger or even how I'll feel later this day. Love this cooler fall weather and cloudy, cool day

Mary, most of the computers being sold now are still 8.1, but many ads say they will update it to Win 10 free. The computer I ordered has 10 already installed, but the same computer is also advertised with 8.1. I had to make sure I clicked on the correct one when I placed my order. At least I hope I did. LOL

Sandy, sounds like you were really busy in the garden.

Karrine, my recipe file is in Microsoft Word. I wouldn't have the first clue as to how to send it to you.

Karrine 09-22-2015 06:40 AM

Good morning ladies,

My tenant's computer needed a fix so we hauled it into Best Buy's Geek Squad. He took one look at it and realized all she needed was an update to the browser she was using. He was very nice; didn't charge us a cent and told me to take the side of my own computer off and dust the fan as that might be the cause of my computer overheating. Either that or I might need a new fan. I looked on the internet for PC's at Best Buy and they only showed one computer loaded with Windows 10 but when we got to the store they had a ton of them.

Mary - my Dell computer is only 2-1/2 years old so I should still have at least another 2 years of usage from it. I haven't received the message for a free update to Windows 10 but think I will stay with Windows 7 for now. I understand that Microsoft will continue updates for this version until 2020. I don't think I am good enough on the computer to update to version 10 on my own so if I want it I think I'll just go to Best Buy and have them load it on as the man told us lots of people have trouble doing it by themselves.

Sandy - too bad we can't post pictures in here as I would love to see your gardens.

Carol - I think you can just send a Word Document as an attachment. I have done this a few times but it was just for a single document and not a "full file" so not sure how to do that. But thank you anyway for thinking about it.

I just found out that my dd and hubby "might" come to visit me this weekend so am excited about that and will have to give the house a little extra cleaning if her plans don't change lol.

Karrine

Wannabehealthy 09-22-2015 10:18 AM

My new computer should be coming today. Sandy, I saved my documents and pictures to the external hard drive like yoo said, and I hope it worked. Most of them are already saved on my flash drive, so I just put the more recent ones on the external hard drive.

Karrine, even if your DD's plans change, at least your house will be clean. My GS is coming for a sleep over on the 3rd so I have to get his room cleaned out. I tend to use that room as a storage room when he's not here, then I have to clean it all out when he's coming. It's funny, but I don't worry about cleaning when my step-daughter is coming, but I do when my step-son is coming if he's bringing his wife. I don't want her thinking I'm a slob. LOL My step-daughter would never care. One time she came over after DH had been in the hospital. She looked around and said "Do you want me to scrub your kitchen floor?" LOL It was terrible, and I had been running back and forth to the hospital. I should have let her do it, but I just told her I'd get to it.

Hi Everyone,

Saw new doctor this morning. We went over results of blood tests & she advised some new vitamins & herbs. I asked her about getting off pain meds & sleeping pills, but she thinks I need to get my system in better balance (based on blood test results) before I try to eliminate these. She would REALLY like me to get off aspirin (taking with Plavix bc of stents) and cholesterol meds. I will be seeing my cardiologist next month & will talk with her about this then.

Tomorrow the guys will come to begin tearing down wallpaper in my condo. NOT looking forward to this.

Lost another pound – just 5 more to go to get to my goal.

Have a GREAT Tuesday,

Lynn

Hi Karrine,

I have all of my genealogy stored on Ancestry. I download into Family Tree Maker when I want to print a particular report or search by place. What do you use? Where are your ancestors from?

Hi Mary,

Just after my knee surgery, the bike was VERY difficult. I use the seated elliptical every morning at the gym for about 20 min. Then, I move over to the elliptical (up to 6 minutes – started at 2 minutes after the stents), then over to the treadmill for 20-30 minutes. I find the elliptical VERY difficult. My heartrate goes up over 140 bpm.

Hi Sandy,

I ABSOLUTELY agree. Windows open, soft breeze, cool air! Yeah Fall!

Hi Karrine,

We can post photos. See photo of my kitty. Go to Advanced & click on Manage Attachments. Then find your photo & upload.

Hi Carol,

Good luck with your new computer.

Just got home from choosing our new entry door. We really liked our salesman...we knew him already as we also bought our windows from him and the installers did a good job. Now we have the door picked out...wood stain (fiberglass door), decorative glass at top of the door (not above it) and in the new side light, and the hardware. The hardest were the wood stain and the glass...I had a really hard time choosing the glass...they were all so pretty. We are replacing the original door and everything connected to it and hopefully this will be our last entry door so it was a big deal to us. I chose a walnut stain and the glass will have a single flower with gold caming. I think we will be happy with it.

This afternoon we are going to see the movie, Everest. I thought it would be good to see on the big screen. Not sure where we will have dinner. My weight is high the last couple days because I've been getting too much sodium.

Lynn - Congrats on another pound lost, you are doing so well! Yes the eliptical is difficult! I have used it at the gym (the standing one), and I can only do a few minutes and my HR goes up fast too. Probably be worse now because we haven't been going to the gym. I want to get one for home so I can trade off from the bike and I can take my time and work up on the minutes. There is also a machine called tread climber and it is a shorter machine and is sort of a combination of a treadmill and the eliptical...but you just walk on it. In case you haven't seen it, here it is: http://deals.fitnessblowout.com/bowf...ad=64694970058
I'd like to have it too but don't have room for three machines! If I were getting just one now, I think I'd go for the tread climber. The reason I chose the bike first is because that's what I was used to using at the gym.

Lynn/Karrine - I would like to my genealogy...a lot of it has been done by my nephew but still I can't seem to find time. I joined Ancestry.com (free acct) but still haven't done much. I find it interesting that they can tell your ethnicity by your DNA! I would think they could tell race but that's not the same as ethnicity from what I understand. I think ethnicity is more to do with the location or culture you are from. Dh would not want me to spend money on it but I do find that interesting.

Karrine - Well updating to Win 10 is very easy, not sure why he said that ...it does it all for you, but no need to change if you are happy with Win 7. I did think 7 was a good system. I think after a certain date they will start charging for Win 10 though, unless of course you get a new computer, then it will probably come with it or you'll be offered as a free update as Carol Sue mentioned. To use Carol Sue's Word files you will need to have Word on your computer to open them.

Carol Sue - Happy for you getting a new computer! That's always an exciting time for me! It's a lot of work though getting everything like I want it but I'm kinda techy and like that sort of thing. I usually get nothing else done as I concentrate on it. :D

Sandy - Your flowers sound lovely...you should post a picture sometime of your yard/flowers. It's nice you enjoy it so much and such great exercise too.

Wannabehealthy 09-22-2015 07:24 PM

Well, there sure is a lot to learn with Win 10. Like I said before, all I care about is getting online to post in my forums, do some emailing, and google for information. I could do that for hours. DH does not like change. He is getting very frustrated with Win 10 because he is not finding things he usually looks for, and he doesn't like that we have to enter a pin to log into the computer. I can't seem to be able to figure out how to eliminate that step. Maybe next time I'm in Best Buy I'll ask someone from the Geek Squad. He already told me that this computer is very basic and not as fast as our old one. It's good enough for me! I might look into getting a bigger monitor one of these days.

Lynn, good for you on losing another pound and getting a good report from the doctor.

maryea 09-23-2015 02:45 AM

I went to bed early as I was very sleepy while watching TV but couldn't sleep once I got to bed.:?: So up again. Carol Sue, I sent you a PM that should help you with the pin# issue. With computers you can almost always change things to your liking.

Karrine 09-23-2015 06:32 AM

Good morning ladies,
Today I am going to cut back my perrenials and rake up all the pine needles I have on the ground. Then start cleaning just in case my dd comes this weekend. I also need to mail my GS Birthday card. He lives in Calgary.

Lynn - Way to go with another lb. and closer to your goal. I have about half of my genealogy on Ancestry and I have researched four branches of my family. My grandmother came from Switzerland and my grandfather came from Germany. I got back to the 1400's on my Grandmother's side. Your kitty photo is so cute and thank you for letting me know you can post pictures.

Mary - Your new front entrance sounds great and I'm sure you will enjoy it. Once you really get into genealogy it becomes like an "incurable disease" lol. I do have Microsoft Word and use it quite often. I love it but am not good at all the different things it can do.

Have a good day everyone :D

Its a beautiful morning here but dh isn't feeling well. I'm keeping an eye on him but think he needs to be checked. So far can't persuade him. At first I thought it might be his heart but now I'm wondering about his lung(s) or even possibly both as in heart failure. Or it may just be a cold. I will check his lungs soon. I always feel like I could so easily wait too long but he is stubborn and doesn't want to go in to be checked. I had planned to go out for groceries but I'm staying home with him now.

Last night we went to see the movie Everest. It was ok but was a little slow, it was hard to distinguish the characters at times due to the weather conditions on the mountain (snow, wind, darkness, heavy clothing etc) and it was very sad esp knowing it was based on a true experience.

Hoping you all have a good day.
