Went over on carbs yesterday but did well on calories. You'd think I could do both, wouldn't you? I keep telling myself there are other things to eat besides carbs...like veggies...which I love but not so much as snacks except for carrots and celery. I do eat them but get tired of them if have too often and I often have them for lunch too. And protein...again, I'm not much for it as a snack. Deli meats are good (except for sodium) but I tend to prefer them in a sandwich...I use the light ww or whole grain bread...and for a meal not a snack. Oh well, have to work on this.

Breakfast today was a Strawberry Smoothie, yummy and filling with whey protein, 1 1/3 T almonds and a little Splenda. Morning snack was a mocha (from mix and skim milk). Lunch was a deli meat sandwich with 2 t. mayo and 4 sl pickles and 5 large baby carrots on side. I think dinner will be tuna patties and lots of veggies.

Sounds like many of you are on WW? I just count calories and carbs. The carbs due to being diabetic.

Mary, that's a cool site, I checked it out. Well, it's Monday, a perferct time to start the week OP! I packed a huge salad for lunch and some fruit. I usually make a big pot of soup on Sundays and bring it in for lunch every day, but I installed a new chandelier and was working in the yard yesterday - 70 degrees and windy. I hear we're in for severe T-storms later this morning. Have a good one!

Hi all,

WebWoman - we're having intermittent thunderstorms here, too. What kinds of soups do use usually make for the week? I like soup, all year long, and like to try new ones.

Mary - I found through trial and error that the new WW Points Plus just isn't for me. It works wonderfully for others, though. So I am back to calorie counting. I think I mentioned that last week? Anyway, I do follow healthy guidelines, and try to get in enough protein, whole grains, etc.

Bunti - good for you, planning ahead for those snacks at work. You know what they say, " If you fail to plan, you plan to fail." So true, and you have it under control, so a big whoo hoo for you!

Tea Granny - you have my permission to cross post here to or from the Golden Girls thread. It's all in one forum, and cross-posting all over the site is what's frowned upon.

Trish - are you doing ok?

I got off-program in Chicago the first 2 days I was there, but got right back OP on the 3rd day, bright and early that morning at breakfast. It's amazing how much better we feel when eating healthy foods.

It's storming here, but thankfully I don't have to get out today. I hope the sun is shining where you are. Have a good day!

Hello everyone.

Whoo! The grant is done so I can take a deep breath!! Points plus is still working for me, but I got side tracked for a day or two....back on track now.

Jane: I sure know what you mean, I had a little trouble one of the days I was gone, and boy do I feel better now. But I paid for it, for sure.

WebWoman: I am a Soup fan as well. I make all kinds, but my family's fave is "Mom's Round-up" Soup, when I rounds up all the vegies that are starting to age, and makes sort of a Minestrone. I make different versions of it at work too, because we feed folks at the after work classes, and kids in the kids program, and so much gets wasted that on Friday morning I go through the fridge and either toss things or make soup. We've named Friday, "Souper Friday" now everyone is bringing healthy foods to share. It has turned into a work ritual.

TeaGranny- I just like to see your posts, wherever they are.

Mary- Cool site. I have been having trouble with too many carbs as well. Hope

I did well today! Yea! I like soup too and we had chicken vegetable soup tonight. I didn't have much chicken (it was leftovers) but had LOTS of veggies. It was really filling and I have to eat things that are very filling or I start eating the wrong things. Got the exercise in today too.

Hi all,
I usually make the soups up as I go along, but the WW 1 point vegetable soup is always a favorite:

I also like to make a Mexican veggie soup: 2-3 cans FF broth mixed with 1 can ff refried beans (makes a nice broth); 1 can ea black and kidney beans; 1 can diced tomatoes; 1 bag of mixed vegetables with corn; 3/4 cup medium salsa (add peppers if you like it hot). It's good and filling due to the protein from the beans. I take it to work and have salad, soup, and fruit for lunch.

Thanks for the recipes Webwoman, they sound good. I have heard of the WW soup but never tried it. Jane, I have tried WW a couple times...not the new program...but while it worked it really isn't set up for diabetics. I thought maybe the new program might be more so. Of course, I can always figure it out on my own with any program, but I have always just found counting calories easier for losing weight. I only count carbs because of my diabetes.

I was ok on calories today but went one over on my carb servings. I think I'll take an extra 1/2 tab of Metformin as doctor suggested. We went to church tonight and when I came home I ate too many snacks (all carb!). Evenings are so hard! Sometimes I feel like I should just go to bed when it gets dark, but doubt I could sleep.

Just a quick flyby to say and I'm still here just busy. Thanks for asking Jane. Our small group at church is studying The Daniel Plan that Rick Warren's church doing for the next 6 weeks. I joined the 52 week program on line and read some of the materials by Dr. Oz, Dr. Hyman and Dr. Amen and then decided to purchase Dr. Amen's book on The Amen Solution. So got a lot of reading to do before Sunday nights class and before I see doctor next week. I'll be back to the group soon.

Hope everyone is doing well. Catch you later.

Happy Friday everyone! I've done pretty well this week, except for the one night when we had spaghetti (kids loved it). In spite of myself, I dropped another pound at WW, due to a week of trying very hard and walking a little more. Mary, I agree, if I could just go to bed when it's dark and not eat another bite, I'd be fine!

Hi Everybody,

Sorry I haven't been around much. Just had to decide what I am going to do. I've tried so many things during this 1st year of learning I am T2 diabetic. So many choices and so many different ideas of what you should do. I know I have to get with something (as my doc said) that I can live with and also as I say that fits my lifestyle. So DH and I had a talk after our first church small group meeting on learning to get healthy.

DH and I talked about the fact that while it is important to get the BS levels down... the key is getting the weight down. I am going to go for weight loss first. I believe the blessing of being diabetic T2 is that when I get the weight off that the BS will become normal. At least that is what most doctors that DH worked with in the medical field always told him when his first wife was diabetic. The problem she had was that she had pancreatitis (sp) caused by an infection after her gall bladder was removed and DH realizes now that she probably couldn't correct hers. So I feel I am blessed that I can change my situation.

I have decided that if calories count and I have to count something... I recently read that if you are low carbing that you still need to count calories... need to count both carbs and calories, I will count calories. Started doing that again yesterday. First let me say I ADMIRE those of you who have chosen to count both. At 67 yrs old, I have done it all and I don't have any desire to spend the rest of my life doing all that work. So I am going to just count the calories. Taking Jane's advice, I am allowing myself 1600 calories on the high end, but hope to keep it lower at least most days. After reading about the success some have zig zaging calories, I will not worry if I go over when eating out. However, I plan to handle eating out by either halfing a meal with DH or bringing half home for later. I think my mind is set for this so I believe that I can do it this time. I've done it in the past just got burn out on it. The main thing to learn this time is that it becomes a LIFESTYLE not a diet that I can get off of later when I reach goal.

Y'all have a great day!!!

Found another website I thought some of you might like....think I actually have been there before but had forgotten about it. http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/menus.html

I like that it has menus as sometimes I need ideas for my breakfast and lunch esp. Dh gets his own at those meals.

Hi ladies,

Mary - did you do better today? I hope so. Thanks for the link. I'll check it out in a bit.

Trish - like you, I really think your BSL will go down once the weight starts coming off. Seems to work like that for many diabetics, anyway. I do think it's important that you not go too low with your calories, or you will get discouraged. Also, eating on the low end doesn't leave much wiggle room for when you lose enough weight that you need to adjust the calories downward.

Webwoman - I have spaghetti probably once every couple of weeks. I eat spaghetti squash with the sauce, or whole wheat spaghetti, depending on how many calories I want to "spend" on it. What used to really rack up the calories is the cheesy bread I used to eat with it. Yowza!

I don't have any family dinners to cook this weekend, so it's always easier to stay OP that way. The weather has been just gorgeous, and I need to get working in the yard again, but I've been finishing some sewing. I've been adding length to short-sleeved tops for summer. Some of the sleeves are just so short, and I don't like to show that much on my "old-lady" upper arms. Anyway, I hope to get outdoors tomorrow. I'll be glad when the local nursery opens so I can get some annuals - impatiens, etc.

Have a good weekend!
