Active Folks Over 50 -- #12
Hey there! :welcome2:
Active Folks Over 50 is a place to talk about fitness and healthy eating information as it relates to weight loss and/or maintenance--and also about any work, fun, hobby, or volunteer activites you're engaged in. In other words, the active part of your life! Just a few guidelines for this thread: - Raves about grandkids or ranting about your kids is out of bounds. - Lengthy discussion of your illnesses, conditions, treatments, and medical procedures in general is also out of bounds on this thread. So is whining about old age! ;) - Positive stories of vacations taken, volunteer work, or achievements at work or elsewhere are highly encouraged! As are recommendations for books, movies, discussions of weight related issues, etc. Join in! ------------------ Gosh, did we all make it to May? And will CountingDown ever get that bike? ;) What's up with everyone today? Sunday is going to be a quiet day for me--nothing planned except the usual work and chores. This is the time of year when all my neighbors pick up and go back north for the summer, so it's getting kind of sparse around my community. Have a good one! Jay |
Recently Tuned Bike
Good morning Jay and Active folks.
Am motivated to post by the brand new thread for which I'm not behind, LOL. Just got my old (35 years old!!) ten speed Raleigh Grand Prix 10 speed tuned up to get started riding again. It's in great shape, needed a bit of lubrication and adjustment along with a new chain and reversing the rear sprockets to get wear on the backs. Then I went to REI and bought a new helmet, so I'm ready to roll. Plan to use if for trips to the local farmer's markets this summer - combine some exercise with gathering the fresh vegetables. Looking for tips on buying rear panniers for carrying the purchases. Anybody have suggestions? __________________ XXXXXXX 7 XXXXXXX 14 XXXXXXX 21 XXXXXXX 28 XXXXXXX 35 XXXXXXX 42 Completed Beck Program-day 42. You’ve met your goal. Congratulations! |
Good Morning . . .
Another :sunny: and mild day. Must get out and about for a little bit -- but since I spent sooooo much money yesterday, I'm going to try to stay away from the stores. |
HI all! I spent much of today cleaning my sewing room closet. I don't sew much any more, so it was a task that was LONG overdue. It's a big walk-in closet, so it took about 4 hours to finish. One more closet to go, to meet my goal.
The youth at church are having a rummage sale to raise money for a mission trip. I thought it was an excellent time to purge. I can't believe how much JUNK I have squirreled away in the last 19 years. Sometimes, I think I should move every 10 years, just to force myself to deal with it. I'm down 2 lbs. for the week, which is a very rare thing these days, so I am delighted :) Hope you all had a wonderful day! |
Hey Bill! Haven't seen you for a long time! Your bike sounds too cool! I like older bikes--that one can actually sit up on and ride, instead of having to hunch over. Is that what yours is like? I hope you get it all fixed up and have a blast riding!
Congratulations CountingDown! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: Jay |
First Light to buy polenta
Hi Jay - My old Raleigh is a classic bent down handlebars that require you to lean over. I keep my hands on the upper part (with brake extensions) so it's closer to sitting up.
Took it out today. First Light was a trip to the supermarket to buy polenta and lean hamburger to make Barbara (BlueToBlue)'s Tamale Pie. Bike rode great; Tamale Pie is a keeper. __________________ XXXXXXX 7 XXXXXXX 14 XXXXXXX 21 XXXXXXX 28 XXXXXXX 35 XXXXXXX 42 Completed Beck Program-day 42. You’ve met your goal. Congratulations! |
Good Morning gang . . .
I slept in a little and so, it seems, has the sun -- at least it isn't 'precipitating' in any way. Have a great moving and shaing day, everybody . . . :carrot: |
A quick fly-by to say that it was a GOOD day. POP and - drum roll - I have a vendor that says he is shipping my moped tomorrow. I SO looking forward to parking my car in the garage and scooting around on a bike that takes 10 cents worth of electricity a day :D
Hope you are all having a GREAT start to the week. |
Good Evening
HOWDY
I have never posted here. Been off line for a year because of no phone line where I live. Got back on line through a satelite connection which I love. I am a Steel Magnolia and decided to lurk about this evening. I found this area and wanted to say howdy. I like your "rules" ~ I am not a whiner nor do I like to listen to them so I just thought I would stop in where I felt comfortable. Have a great evening folks and I just may come back and type at you later. |
Hi MAGGIE . . . :welcome:
And good morning to everyone else . . . :grouphug: So far the day looks overcast and for a change I'm fine with that. I prefer this kind of weather for the 90 minute drive to the airport and once I'm plane-bound to Ontario, I'll be above the clouds anyway. Don't know if I'll be around much for the next few day, gang -- but you never know -- I might get lucky and find a computer. See you soon. |
See ya, meowee!
:welcome2: to Maggie! Bill, I'm glad your bicycle is so much fun. I had a bike some years ago, but I ended up not riding it very much. What I'd like is one of those "touring bikes" with the wide seat and high handlebars. One can find them, but they are expensive. CountingDown, I hope you have that Moped soon! it looks very nice! I hope some of our other regulars pop in... Things are good here. I went to the gym yesterday--and tried to take it a little easy with the weights since I was sore from using the pressure washer on Sunday. Have a good one! Jay |
Countingdown, I love your bike! Wish I had enough nerve to drive one. I'm frightened to death on bikes.
Hi Maggie, nice to meet you. How'd you live without a phone line??? Glad you've got one now. Today I've decided to dust. That must be done. I also have a half dead zucchini that must be cooked/baked into something and sweet potatoes that are begging to be eaten. So today, I'm devoting my life to housework. Now, that wasn't so hard to say, was it? |
Hey! I never checked out this thread before. May I join? I really, really love the "rules" as I refuse to give in to creeping old fartism.
Meowee is coming to visit me and I'm pretty sure I can trust her on my computer. We may even go for a walk or two with my dog. (I am getting active again after something we won't talk about. ) |
Hi Ruth, I'm sure no one will mind if you jump right in. :carrot: :D You gotta keep young to keep jumping and hopping about like carrot.
|
Ruth! :welcome3: C'mon in, we're a lot of fun over here!
Jay |
Good Morning
ITS GONNA BE A WARM ONE:flame:
THANK YOU for such a nice welcome. To clarify a misunderstanding ~ I don't have a phone line. There aren't any drops here for the service. The ranch across the road took them all ~ but that is a story for another day, ;)I do have a cell phone but it doesn't work here either. If I want to make a call we drive down the road and around a few mountains about a mile. My internet connection is through Hughes which has a satelite and just beams the signal down and not trough a phone wire. We do have a satelite dish on the rig to receive the signal. Works better than a phone line and DSL connection. :nono: This is not a commerical, I don't work for them ~ just a satisfied customer. :D I am sitting sipping my coffee in a tall container that won't spill if I knock it over. Does that give you a clue that I just might? My main squeeze had to roll out early this morning to head into town to the dentist ~ time for a cleaning. He is such a sweet heart ~ the coffee pot was set ready for me to just push a button & voilla. He's a keeper. Our watermellon plants finally peeked up through the soil. I was beginning to think we would have to replant. The other things we planted are doing well. The gophers like them too.:p I go to WW on Thursdays and sure hope to show a loss this week. I lose 10 pounds at a time. Well I guess my little ticker at the bottom tells you that. A bicycle? What fun! And good exercise. I used to love to ride but now I have a brace on my left leg which makes it difficult to peddle ~ but we have a Jeep. Everyone have wonderful day this day. And smile, you never know who is watching. |
Hi all and welcome, Ruth and Maggie!
I'm on vacation right now in Melbourne Beach, Florida. We have a room right on the beach and we can hear the waves crashing all night. It's turtle nesting time, when the sea turtles come up on the beach at night to lay their eggs. We all have to keep our drapes drawn and lights down so as not to disturb them. Tomorrow we're going to Kennedy Space Center. My eating hasn't been bad but not great. But I'm getting a lot of exercise...up and down stairs, swimming in the pool, walking on the beach. We'll see what the scales say when I get back home this weekend. |
Hey Dinahgirl! Sounds like you're having a great time! I would love to go to Kennedy Space Center someday. I'm over on the "left coast."
Yep, turtle nesting season! good for you for keeping the blinds drawn, so those little babies can find their way to the ocean. Jay |
Gosh--without meowee here to bump this thread up, I guess the rest of us will just have to post more! ;)
How are you all doing today? Active? Happy? Losing or at least not gaining? I hope so! Jay |
Welcome to Ruth Maggie and Dinah. Lots of new people on board. Nice to hear from you all. :woohoo:
Hope everyone is having a good week. I started Tai Chi last night and enjoyed that. I was so relaxed afterward. Was really nice. Other than that I am still struggling to get to the gym in the morning. Maybe it would be a better idea to go in the evening. Especially now that the days are so much longer. No weight loss these days just maintaining but that is a drag. I find it so hard to lose at this age. Need to continue to cut the portions back I guess. I am slowly getting the food at work under control. Which is a god send. That is my biggest hill to climb. I have started to take nothing but healthy things with me but also enough that if I am starving then I can manage as I have an extra protein or a fruit. Nice to see you all doing so well. I get on here to read usually everyday but then end up with no time left to chat. So heres to a great week for everyone......:coffee2: Be back soon.....Jude:D |
Hi all! Quick flyby to say hello. Supposedly, the bike shipped out from CA last night :D
Busy day with work and church activities. I almost skipped my afternoon workout, but I thought of all of you and just KNEW that you would do it, so I did an aerobic dance video and grabbed leftovers for supper instead of cooking. Funny, how we CAN find time to exercise when we really try ;) The weather is cold and rainy again, so I wasn't able to walk outside today. Hopefully, it will warm up again soon. Hope you all had a wonderful OP day :) |
hijude
CountingDown, may the bike arrive soon! And you're right--there IS time for exercise. I remember on another thread, one member was pointing out that we all have the same amount of time... 24/7/365... and it's our choice. I know there are all kinds of "buts" that people come up with--I can do it too--and yet, it's amazing to find that yes, there is time for exercise after all. I went for a walk in the morning and to the gym in the afternoon! :broc: :broc: I'm going to be gone the next few days, until Sunday--so keep up the conversation, folks! Jay |
Hello everyone. I'm just contemplating what to make for dinner (lunch) and as soon as someone can stay with mom I'm out for my jog. I feel I cannot miss a scheduled day of exercise if possible because that will leave a big gap in my May Accountability post.
|
Good Morning . . . :grouphug:
Ruth and I are right here watching over all of you Active Chickies, you know. And Ruth's gorgeous Portugese Water Dog, Hershey, is sitting here helping with this post, too. Ontario is looking nice and sunny but it did rain late yesterday. We had a great lunch in Ottawa and then walked around the open-air market to burn off at least 20 of the thousand or so calories we had consumed . . . . . . Every little bit helps. See you soon, gang . . . keep things moving and shaking . . . :carrot: |
I'm doing good today. It's unusually cold here in Seattle for May. You almost have to wear a winter coat. I did get in some walking and I did some other exercising, weights and dancing. Over the last 2 weeks I've lost 3 more lbs for a total of 17 lbs since the beginning of the year, so I'm happy. It still keeps coming off even though I have hypoglycemia and it's been very hard for me to lose weight. Thank goodness for my diet program.:carrot:
|
JayEll - hope you are doing something fun!
retiredone - LOL - the accountability thread DOES make you think about having to post your day's activities, doesn't it? I have skipped a late night snack or two, just so I didn't have to go back in and change my numbers :D meowee & Ruth (and Hershey) - sounds like you are having a wonderful time. I have never been to Ottawa, but from the pictures I have seen, it would be a great place to walk around! mandmsgirl - congrats girl - you are doing GREAT! Keep it up! I have always called myself a "turtle" on this journey. Slow, steady, plugging along. But each and every ounce we lose is significant. They all add up :D Another busy day - but it was beautiful outside and I did get my walk in. We have a 2 mile (round trip) path that starts in the City park and goes to the Jr. High School (where my office is). I love to walk the lake path as much as I can. http://img167.imageshack.us/img167/7289/lakewalkee8.jpg |
Good Morning . . .
It was a wonderful little mini-vacation but I'm very glad to be home to my own bed. Slept like the proverbial log last night. Of course, I'm also back to crappier weather -- Ontario was quite a bit warmer and is the greening-up ever ahead of ours. Oh well, I do have one lonely tulip and a few bits of yellow at the base of my forsythias and I think I see a couple of buds on the lilacs . . . spring will get here. Amazingly enough, the scale:devil: showed me a lower number than he handed be four days ago in spite of my salt and carb debacle while away (good grief, my ankles are still swollen). Maybe he missed me and is trying to be nice. I think the cats also missed me, but who can really tell with cats. Everything seems pretty normal this morning. Well . . . better get myself to a few more 3FC places (after I get another :coffee2:). See you all later, gang -- keep things moving and shaking. :carrot: |
Hi all - just checking in. Linda - glad you are back safe and sound! I'm SURE the kitties missed you.
Weight is stubbornly still at 139.0 (5 days in a row now), but I'm still so jazzed about the "3" that is isn't phasing me much. DH and I walked the lake path last night, plus an extra mile. I love spring! Gotta get cracking on the PowerPoint presentations for church tomorrow and get some laundry and cleaning done. Hope everyone has a GREAT weekend! Jay - we are missing you! Hope you are doing something fun! |
Hi everyone and happy Saturday. We are back from our week on the beach...it was absolutely awesome and if you ever have a chance to go to the Kennedy Space Center, jump on it. We even saw the shuttle out on the landing pad. I'm a space freak...I bought a pink coffee thermos that says "Space Princess" and a t-shirt that says "I need my Space."
My eating was not up to par, but hey, it was a vacation! However, we swam and walked a lot, so I'm sure it will all balance out. The cats missed us and actually let us know with their meows and purrs and leg-rubbing. Or, maybe that was canned food they wanted. :D I told my husband that I have to get back on track with writing my food down because that's the best way for me. So I'm writing....orange/cranberry muffin and coffee for breakfast. Monday I go back to work and school starts again. Work I could do without, but I love going to school so I'm looking forward to that. Have a great day, everybody! :carrot: |
Good Morning and Happy Mother's Day . . . :grouphug:
Just finished wading through the e:cards and feeling a little glad that my kinds are a long way away. Although I'd love to be able to spend more time with them, I feel the need of a lazy, stay at home day today. Probably partly the cold rainy day with the wind at a definite moving and shaking level. Hope the rest of you have wonderful and fun things on the agenda . . . see you later. |
Happy Mother's Day! My sons live very far away from me...one in New York and one in Mexico...so I will have to make my own Mother's Day today. It will probably include grocery shopping, cleaning the bathroom, etc., but that's okay. I've had a great vacation week. Perhaps I'll buy myself some flowers at the store. Have a great day everyone!:grouphug: |
Hi everyone - welcome to Maggie and Ruth! Happy mother's day to all the moms. Hey, happy mother's day to everyone! (I love saying it to guys.)
I've been kind of low-key melancholy but sort of peaceful at the same time - so haven't posted much. Car show last weekend was a low-key sort of interesting rather than full-blown fun. A time for everything, I guess. Enjoy your Sunday, everyone. jo |
Happy Mother's Day all!
Our kids won't be with us either, which actually makes it much easier to stay OP. Mother's Day is the ONE day that I refuse to go out to eat. The lines are long, the food is mediocre at best (ESPECIALLY for vegetarians) and I don't really enjoy all the noise (my hearing aids pick up everything). Jo - good to hear from you again - we miss you! Hope you all have a great day! |
She's baaaack! I hope all the mothers have had a good day, and all those who have mothers celebrated with them in some way.
Did I mention I was off at a Buddhist event? I think I did somewhere. Well, that's where I was. It was a day-long teaching, and it was quite enjoyable. One of our teachers had a birthday yesterday, so a surprise party was planned. This was after having a Tsok, which is a kind of feast, where everyone brings something as an offering. So, not only did I overeat very strange combinations of food, but there was birthday cake on top of it. :p I really should have gotten a better grip! When you find yourself chasing down a piece of roast beef with a few M&Ms, you know you've lost it. I stayed to help clean up after--someone decided we ought to have confetti to throw for the birthday surprise, and naturally there was confetti from one end of the building to the other. Take it from me--if you ever do this--skip the confetti! The downside was that someone was taking photos, and in the photos I still look heavy. :( No, not as heavy as I was. I know that. But my mental image of myself has always been slimmer than reality, so it was hard to see that the two still don't match up. Especially while realizing that your plan is off the rails... The drive over to West Palm Beach from where I live, on the west coast of Fla., is pretty much a straight shot east/west, with some north/south adjustment on either end. Central Florida is rural, and there are huge cattle ranches--also huge citrus orchards--and sod farms. Further south there are large fields of sugar cane. Many of the towns in the middle part of the state are still trying to recover from Hurricane Charley and friends from 2004. It was a 5 hour drive each way, so I was glad to get home and get to the gym! Yes, I did go. I was so kinked from driving all that time, plus sitting on the floor all day Saturday, that I needed it! Jay |
Hi Jay, glad you're back. We drove down to Fort Pierce on Sunday, then down to Jupiter Monday morning, and then back up to Melbourne Beach the same day. But of course the rest of the week, we relaxed on the beach.
We stayed at the most wonderful little place called Tuckaway Shores...it's right on the beach, family owned, and each unit has a kitchenette. Wednesday we drove up to the Cape and toured the Space Center...it was pretty awesome. |
Hey! Gosh, we might have criss-crossed each other at some point, Dinah!
I really want to go to Kennedy Space Center someday! Jay |
Jay - welcome "home". Sounds like it was an awesome weekend :D And you are already back on track with your gym visit - you are a ROCK girl!
Don't despair over the pictures. When you are ready to take the next step in your weight loss journey, you will. Think of how far you have come, not about what is yet to be. We are glad to have you back - the place wasn't the same without you! |
Sounds like you guys are keeping busy. My last day at the gym was Wed as I took a few days off before our next trip..we leave tomorrow to visit our dd in UT. I'm trying to track my calories but not always doing well and I know on the trip it will be even harder...went to a buffet today and I did well until dessert....still tonight I haven't eaten much...had a frappe (110 cal for the mix and 30 for the skim milk) and some fruit, that's all. I feel very full actually so may be ok. Unless we go with our dd we won't be at a gym but will be taking care of our 18 mo old gs and that usually helps me lose or at least keep the weight down. ;-)
|
Hi gang . . .
Still cold and overcast but at least it has stopped raining -- and that rain yesterday did seem to get a little thick at times. The good news is that both the weight and the blood sugar levels have blipped back down to where they belong. Nothing too exciting going on for me today . . . hope all the rest of you have exciting things planned. Keep yourselves moving and shaking . . . :carrot: |
Hi all, I've done very well yesterday and today. I've eaten very much on plan and I did a 30-minute George Foreman Circuit Walk CD when I got home from work.
AND, I successfully kept myself from the chocolate jar at work. I went to it and started to open it, and said NOPE and walked away. I feel so virtuous! Of course, I still have that key lime pie in the refrigerator..........:dust: |
