Good Morning sleepy heads . . . time to get moving and shaking . . . :carrot:

Well . . . we have sunshine in Northern Nova Scotia this morning, but it is way too cold for being almost mid-May. Guess I'll try to be happy with the small mercies, though. At least the weight did another little downward 'blip' this am, but the blood sugar did an upward one -- the fact that I forgot to take my evening meds might have had something to do with it of course.

Nothing too exciting in my plans for today -- have to take my friend to the hospital for an intervenous bone-density treatment -- so we will probably do a bit of shopping while we are in the next-town-over anyway. Other than a little time with my Gazelle, guess that will be it for today.

Hope everybody else has some fun stuff planned.

CountingDown 05-13-2008 10:13 PM

Just a quick fly-by. Worked 13 hrs yesterday, 12 today + church meetings after that.

Doing fine, no real news other than - my bike is supposed to be DELIVERED tomorrow :D (I'd make that smile bigger if I could).

I'm hoping that it is damage-free. A LOT of Chinese scooters suffer in transit.
Speaking of China - all affected by the earthquake are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dinahgirl 05-13-2008 11:27 PM

HI all, What a day. I've been up since 6, worked all day, and am just finished with my homework at 11 p.m.

All of that and to top it all off...a big argument with my husband, who trashed my cooking and then said I over-reacted. :frypan:

But the good news is that I ate clean, walked again today and once again did not eat any chocolate! :cheer2:

No more whining for me...it's time to make the morning coffee and go to bed.

meowee 05-14-2008 06:31 AM

Good Morning . . . :carrot: . . . up and at 'em, Chicklets . . . the day is on it's way to you.

Looks like another :sunny: but relatively cold one around here. At least the wind has settled down. On my little walk yesterday all 220+ pounds of me almost got blown away.

My friend LouLou has another friend who is on the 'vacation of a lifetime' visiting her son . . . guess where . . . they had just left that gigantic Mall when it collapsed. Terrifying experience and it doesn't look like things are improving over there very quickly. Hope she can get a flight out of there soon. :crossed:

Okay gang . . . have a great day of eating OP and moving and shaking just as much as you can.

JayEll 05-14-2008 07:47 AM

I was in the Loma Prieta quake in California in 1989, and I'm here to tell you that anything above 7.0 is really scary and bad news!

I hope you're all going to have a good Wednesday. I'm woefully behind on work--this is now the price I get to pay for having a weekend trip. And, I'll be gone of Friday to a conference all day. Sigh... Think good thoughts for me.

I have made it to the gym and walking, though. It's really just part of what I do these days.

Cheers!
Jay

Let your husband cook next time. I'm quite over-reactive myself when it comes to my cooking!! :D

Dinahgirl 05-14-2008 09:04 PM

Thanks. Actually we do share the cooking. He just picked a bad time and the wrong words. And, of course, I did say "Fine, then I won't cook anymore." :p

But of course, I will. We're speaking again now.:)

I ate clean again today, and on Day 5 of no chocolate! If I could quit smoking, I can do this!

:carrot:

CountingDown 05-14-2008 09:57 PM

A quick post (hopefully more tomorrow) to let you know I am still alive and kicking. Church meetings every night this week (and a school board presentation on Monday night as well). Whew - what a week.
Staying POP and really enjoying walking outside regularly now :D

Oh, and more on this tomorrow - but - drum roll - the scooter arrived today :D It is wonderful!!! And gas prices hit $4.02 a gallon today - perfect timing.
I'm hoping to post a picture or two tomorrow. Gotta get it registered with DMV so I can start riding it :)

JayEll 05-15-2008 07:12 AM

CD, :woohoo: The scooter has arrived!

I'll be gone for another day--I'm off to a conference on native Florida plants. I'm staying over with a friend in her hotel room, and I'm hoping the hotel has a fitness center.

I went swimming yesterday--it was a nice day for it here--sunny, hot :sunny: :beach:

Catch y'all later!

Jay

Ruthxxx 05-15-2008 07:43 AM

Gosh, Jay, that sounds like something I'd be interested in although I am currently "planted out". I've been digging, splitting and potting perennials for the past week as I have yet another plant sale this weekend. My muscles are feeling it but it sure beats last spring when I could work for only ten minutes before getting discouraged.

Spring is definitely here. Lily of the Valley and lilacs are in full bloom and the countryside is so colourful. Back in 1967 (Canada's 100th), the government gave out deep pink Centennial crab trees and every farmhouse around here has at least one. There are lots of lambs, foals, calves and other babies so the whole thing is sort of Norman Rockwell.

Just put on my new WATP tape and am going to start it at least!

Have a lovely Thursday.

meowee 05-15-2008 08:36 AM

Hi there . . .

So far I'm just sitting around watching Purrecious and my friend's toy Poodle trying to outstare each other. My other four cats 'disappeared' when the dog came in the door. The Queen Bee, however, will not back down. She's slightly annoyed that he keeps playing with 'her' toys. Not worried about them because they are pretty evenly matched in size and the cat has no front claws.

I'm jealous of all those with lots of nice plant life in their yards . . . we don't even have sun yet this morning and the predicted high is 6C/43F . . . may never see any lilacs this year. :(

Guess I'll just be doing the Gazelle thing today -- LouLou and I went to town on Tuesday so probably won't go again today.

Have a good one, everybody . . . :carrot:

retiredone 05-15-2008 04:07 PM

Oh, Meowee, don't say you won't see lilacs this year, because if you guys don't we won't either and I love lilacs!

CountingDown 05-15-2008 09:17 PM

Plants are finally looking wonderful here. The tulips are open, the azalea is blooming, the myrtle is flowering, and most of the bulbs are still quite colorful. I really love spring! Of course the pollen is floating everywhere - so there are some trade-offs for my beautiful flowers ;)

I got the scooter registered in MI as a moped today, so I am all set. Rode it to work and I had to visit 4 different schools today. It was quite the hit among the kids. With gas at $4.02 a gallon today, it couldn't have come at a better time :D

jojo453 05-15-2008 09:56 PM

Hello Everyone

This is my first post. I will be 55 this year and have decided to get myself in the best shape of my life. I did it when I turned 50, but kinda let go for a while. My cholesterol went up, so back to work! I've been successful bringing it down from 278 to 211 in a year with diet and exercise..also lost some weight and toned up.

I walk 2 miles most days to and from work. Work offers pilates classes which I take twice a week. I also have been hooked on "Turbo-Jam" workouts. There's a lot of kickboxing in this workout and I was afraid it may be hard to do at my age, but decided to try it and love it.

My fiance and I will be taking swing dance lessons starting next week. I am having the best time of my life. I feel I have more energy now than in my 40s.

I can't wait to read how some of you keep active and in shape. I need all the inspiration I can get. ;)

Take care.
Jo

CountingDown 05-15-2008 10:08 PM

Jo :welcome:
You have found the right place to hang out. There are many active 50+ folk that post here :D

Sounds like you have a plan and are making progress. Congrats! Weight loss at this age is hard, but not impossible. Like you, I like to keep my workouts varied. I walk, lift weights, and regularly do pilates, yoga, resistance bands, fitness ball, Zumba and aerobic dance.

I think that walking has been my biggest success strategy. It really works well for me :D

meowee 05-16-2008 07:51 AM

Oh wow . . . I want a scooter . . . looks like fun as well as being great, economical transportation.

:welcome: JOJO . . . glad to hve you joining us.

Well, gotta fly . . . hope to get back later. See you all then . . . :carrot:

meowee 05-17-2008 07:53 AM

Hi there . . .

Think my exercise for today will be running to the bathroom a lot -- major cookies and NSA ice cream melt-down yesterday. :o Hey, today will be better.

It's a long weekend in Canada and think it is fairly (compared to what it has been) mild out there although it is overcast and very foggy right now. This is the traditional "opening the cottage for the season" long Victoria Day weekend so I hope the weather clears up a little for those folks that will be very busy with those early Summer tasks.

Hope everybody else has a great weekend planned, too. :grouphug:

JayEll 05-17-2008 06:02 PM

Hey! Glad to see that y'all are still on the thread! Greetings, jojo453!

The conference had something for everyone--gardening workshops, scientific workshops, activism workshops, even a kids' conference with lots of activities. All of it was about native plants of Florida. Many states have native plant societies or wildflower societies--check it out! Why, I'll bet they even have such things in Canada... ;)

One thing I found out is that a very large nature preserve, Brooker Creek Preserve, is "just up the road apiece" from where I live. You can browse around a bit here:

http://www.brookercreek.org/home1.htm

Click "Friends of Brooker Creek" at the bottom of the home page to see more information.

Lots of hiking trails (when they aren't underwater in the summer)!

Jay

Good Morning . . . :carrot:

For some reason, I'm up way too early this morning and hope I can fit in a nap later on. Other than that, mostly SSDD for me.

Hope the rest of you hve some really fun things planned for the rest of the weekend.

CountingDown 05-18-2008 07:25 PM

A busy weekend here. DH's brother is in town for his once a year visit. And, I have a conference for work Mon. - Wed. so I am trying to get some things done ahead.

The weather is cold, but sunny - and very windy - so no scooter riding today, but I did get in a walk to church and back :)

I tried a new protein bar recipe since I really haven't found any prepared bars that I both like the size AND the ingredients :( I'm still tweaking, but I'm getting closer.I will post it once I am happy with it.

Hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

meowee 05-19-2008 09:47 AM

Gosh, we active-over-50s are so active, we can't even seem to get to the computer! Why, at this rate we'll all be at goal very soon... :D

Not much new or different today for me. Mostly just working, having meals and snacks, going to the gym... Life!

Jay

Isabeau 05-19-2008 05:17 PM

Hi everybuddy! I'm back again after a long absence, being busy, etc. I've introduced myself on the intro thread and the 50+ forum, and I'm glad I found this thread :)

My accomplishment today is I purchased a bike! I've been eyeing one at a thrift shop for a week, and when I went in today, it was still there...like it was waiting for me, ya know? Anyhoo, it's been years since I've been on a bike, but I'm excited to get riding again, just puttering around the 'hood at first before I get brave enough to trek further from home. Anyway, that's my fun thing I did today.

How true! I worked a 13 hour day today (out-of-town conference). But I DID get in an hour of exercise - 30 minute walk and 30 min. on the fitness ball :D

Isabeau - that is AWESOME! My kids cannibalized my bike for parts, and then moved away from home before they repaired it. I am left with a frame and some gears - but nothing I can ride :( But I like to walk, so it really doesn't matter too much.

I hope you will come post here often - we CAN be a chatty bunch ;)

Hope you are all doing wonderful and fun things! Have a GREAT week!

meowee 05-20-2008 09:15 AM

Good Morning . . .

Another damp and dull day -- although the sun did shine for a tiny bit first thing this morning. Oh well, since my major moving and shaking activity today will probably be doing a ton of laundry (and other houseworky stuff), this is fine weather.

Have a great fun day, everybody and I'll see you all later . . . :carrot:

Isabeau 05-20-2008 09:36 AM

Good morning everybody! Hey, guess what? I almost burned the house down! :dizzy: Seriously, I whipped up an quiche to toss in the oven this morning, turned it on, set it to proper temp, then..sniff, sniff...what tha'? Yikes! Smoke coming from the oven! I quickly turned it off, opened both oven and broiler doors, and then opened my back porch doors to air out the place! I hope, I hope, I hope it's not a mousie :( We caught one about a month ago, did a thorough cleaning, but I hope one didn't set up camp in the oven, ugh! I'm not going back in there until my landlord comes to check it out. I don't wanna start poking around in there and find something I'm gonna have to scream about soon after :) Soooo, hey, nothing like an exciting morning, eh?

I've got to work about 4 hours today, then will put in a Leslie Sansone walking tape to do 3 miles. It's gonna be 96 again today, and I'd rather walk inside than out!

Have a great day, my friends! Small steps...

the slim me 05-20-2008 02:38 PM

Good Morning, I haven't been around lately. My computer was out of commision. Finally got it up and going again. Amazing how quickly we get attached to those things!

I continue to do well. I am at goal for 6 months now. Some days are hard, some easier. I have faced the fact that it's never going to be something I don't have to work at. But, ya know, it's so worth it. My BP is good and my cholesterol is normal now. The Dr. had discussed putting me on medication for both. AND, I feel so much better in my clothes. For the first time in a long time I find buying clothes enjoyable, not a chore. And i can find nice things that I want to wear.

It's still cold here in Michigan, but at least the sun is out today. I look forward to warmer weather! Then you will have to listen to me complain about the heat!

Freda

flowingair 05-20-2008 05:52 PM

Hi all, I thought I'd jump on this forum. I've been on some of the other forums. I love the accountability thread. My motivation has been quite low lately. Exercise has always helped me stay on target so I hope this thread will keep me motivated. Lori

CountingDown 05-20-2008 07:49 PM

flowingair - :welcome: Come back and post often :) I like the accountability thread too :D

Freda - cold AND windy :( But at least the sun is shining! We had frost the last two nights. I'm glad I waited to put my plants in :)

Isabeau - oh, dear - keep us posted what it was. My imagination is getting the best of me ;)

Another good day here - I'm glad the conference is almost over. It is actually decadent (and disgusting) all the food they are serving. The price of the conference was high, and to have school districts paying for us to have all this excess is troubling. It will definitely be in my evaluation. It has been good to see that I have overcome my "free food" mentality. I'm really thinking that this lifestyle might actually stay changed :D

Hope you all had a wonderful day :)

JayEll 05-21-2008 07:19 AM

CountingDown, LOOK how close you are to goal! Great gracious me! You keep on goin', girl!

We got some RAIN yesterday, which is greatly needed here. Unfortunately it came as the lawn care folks were out--but it was a slow, steady rain, so I guess they did OK. I'm so glad things got watered!

I'm home alone this week and having a good time of it. Just me and the cat. I had a nice on-plan day, foodwise, and will be doing the same today. :D

Yesterday was my day off from the gym, but I plan to be back at it today. What's new with all of you?

Jay

meowee 05-21-2008 05:49 PM

Hi there . . . :carrot:

Another rainy and cold day here . . . getting very tiresome. Spent most of the day in the shopping malls, so didn't really bother me a lot. One of the things I bought was the new Wii Fit -- tomorrow I hope to actually take it out of the box -- just too tired to get involved with it this evening.

See you tomorrow.

CountingDown 05-21-2008 06:41 PM

Not that I care to continue the trend, but a very cold and rainy day here as well :(

I made the best of it by going shopping :D

The conference ended at noon today, so I took a couple hours to go to Kohls and Sams Club before returning home (gotta make the most out of a trip to the big city when gas is $4 a gallon).

I found a cute skirt, two pairs of pants, a kimono style dress and a really cute top. And - best of all, I only spent $46 :D

Jay, you are right - my goal is sneaking up on me. I am tryng to decide if I need to lower it down to 130. I'm not sure yet. I think I will keep sticking to my plan when I reach 135 and see how my body responds.
I resurrected my Tae Bo video today (haven't done it for a few months) since it was too nasty to walk outside. I'm feeling it, which helps remind me that I need to continue mixing it up when it comes to exercise.

Hope you all had a very good day, even if the weather was less than stellar.

JayEll 05-22-2008 08:23 AM

Hey!

Yesterday I accomplished a task I've been trying to get to for months.

We have a shed that we need to store a lot of stuff in--but in this climate (Fla.) one has to have climate control or mold happens. I bought a dehumidifier for the shed, and it's really done a great job of keeping things dry. :D

Well, the dehumidifier has a fitting to attach to a hose, so you can run the hose to a drain. Otherwise, you have to empty the reservoir at least once a day. In the case of the shed, there is no drain that would work--so my plan was to put a pipe through the wall of the shed to the outdoors. But as these things go, months went by...

We're going on a trip in June for 10 days, so it really is time to get the dehumidifier working on its own. Yesterday was the day... I had the drill bit to cut a hole through the wall (aluminum wall with vinyl siding on the outside); the assembly for the short pipe, with a V-shaped trap on the outside and a hose connector on the inside; a six-foot length of hose; and bushings/flanges to go on each side of the wall to finish and seal the assembly.

That's a long description just to say--I did it! :broc:
And it only took one-half hour from start to finish. Now those of you who have done any kind of home repair know that this is a miracle! I didn't even have to make the obligatory trip to the hardware store for more parts! Everything just went together perfectly.

So, that's my big success story for yesterday.

Hope you all have great successes today!

Jay

meowee 05-22-2008 09:16 AM

Good going JAY . . . we are women; we can do it. :high:

We have sunshine today and I want to go out and play so maybe I'll delay connecting my new Wii Fit until tomorrow (when it's supposed to rain again) because I know if I get started with the new toy, the day will suddenly disappear.

Have a great moving and shaking time, gang . . . :carrot:

the slim me 05-22-2008 01:16 PM

Hi All, Glad to hear that everyone is doing well, I finally got around to adding my additional charm to my charm bracelet today. I buy a new charm for each month I stay at my goal weight and not gain. That charm bracelet is looking pretty good! It's a silly incentive, I am the first to admit, but it's something I really look forward to and it's not that expensive.

Counting, You really are close to your goal weight!!! Congratulations!!! I reavualted my goal weight as I went along. I said I would know when I wanted to stop and I did. It was a little below my goal. Trust your body, it will let you know when you get there. I loved the Tae Bo exercise but I can't do them anymore because of the kicking. Great tapes though.

Jay, You go girl!!! That is so inspiring.

Lyn, did you unpack that WII yet? I'm thinking...

Issie, I can't get the image out of my head now. YUCK!

Everyone have a good day, Freda

meowee 05-22-2008 01:28 PM

 Don't know about Lyn . . . but I got mine out of the box, but haven't initialized it yet. Got upset with it when I realized the floor-pad thingee is also a scale and can display your weight on the screen. :yikes: Guess it makes sense since it also calculates your BMI; percentage of fat; and a lot of other 'pseudo-fitness-related stuff'.

the slim me 05-22-2008 01:32 PM

Sorry Meowee, I ment you, of course. by the way, love the new picture

retiredone 05-22-2008 04:58 PM

Freda, I love your charm bracelet idea. I don't wear jewelry but the principle of the reward the way you do it is great. I think I'm going to make a list of small non-food rewards that I could use for each month I stay on plan (and eventually like you stay at goal weight). I think that's a marvelous idea.

CountingDown 05-22-2008 07:54 PM

Hi all, hope everyone had a good day. The sun is shining and I am hoping to spend some time in the gardens this weekend. Work is still crazy (will be until the kids and teachers get out in June) but at least it keeps me from thinking about food ;)

I did make a cute skirt last night with some left-over fabric. I definitely need to spend more time with my sewing machine. It was actually relaxing, and I just love the sense of accomplishment when I actually produce something with my efforts :D

CountingDown 06-06-2008 06:47 PM

I don't know if Jay is starting a new thread for us, or if we are going to continue to use this one. But, I thought I would bump it just in case.

Hope you are all having a WONDERFUL Friday, and have a GREAT weekend!
