Any ideas/suggestions to jump start my weight loss?? I am on vacation from work this week-am at home due to family birthdays etc.
I have been having a hard time trying to get on track lately..at work the location of the office I am in changed a couple of weeks ago from one building to another and am still adjusting to that..
I have been trying to increase my activity but having a sit down job this is difficult sometimes..and of course when I get home at nite, I am so tired.
All I want to do is eat supper and veg out in front of the TV all nite-have done this several times weekly!!
Also, I have been told recently that I am diabetic and am having a hard time coming to terms with that. Being overweight most of my life, I have decided that the closer I get to 50 I really need to make some changes NOW...
I guess if it were me, I would start small. Choose 1 small thing you know you can commit to doing and do it. For a whole week. Then add another for the next week. And then another, and so on.
So, what is the first change you are willing to make? Going for a walk after dinner? Making a healthy breakfast? Parking farther away from the office? Packing lunch instead of buying lunch? Cutting out soda or salty snacks or cookies? Really, whatever you see fit. But choose it, commit to it, and then keep building on that success.
Kathi-welcome to 3FC. Newleaf has given you some good thoughts. What you eat is going to be far more important than how much you exercise in terms of losing weight at this point so spending some time thinking about what you can do there is probably most important. Since you are diabetic-you should choose a plan that is consistent with your health goals.
Something that a lot of us who are not wild about exercise or who have found it hard to fit into our lives have found easier to do is a Wii Fit-not too hard to get off the couch and spend a little time playing with that each night or even a few nights a week. It feels more like play than exercise to me most of the time.

Like mentioned, start with a walk - even if it's a tiny one - you can still build it up a little bit at a time. Leslie Samsone (sp?) has Walk away the Pounds videos which are nice if you want something inside...another way to get tiny bits of change in - is if you're watching a TV show, get up during a commercial and just march in place for 1 minute...take a break, watch your show, next commercial, get up and do it again...get your body used to moving - or like Petra mentions Wii-Fit, people have fun playing games while exercising
Good luck to you, and looking forward to getting to know you. As for food - find things you DO enjoy so you have "fall back" healthy foods when you want to go off plan...enjoy the foods you eat, rather than choosing foods you think you "have" to eat. It makes a difference.
Deb-you are so right. I was eating this steak and blue cheese salad tonight for dinner and thought.......man, this is so good!! And it is totally on plan for me.
These are all great suggestions! One thing that is pretty simple is to drink lots of water. It has really helped me. I drink half my body weight in water every day. If nothing else, I get more exercise because I have to go to the bathroom all the time! I didn't drink that much at first because I just couldn't imagine it - so I started small - just like the others have mentioned. I got a 22 oz glass and filled it up and just kept it with me all the time. When it was empty, I filled it up again. The funny thing was, I found myself wanting more and being thirsty even with all that water, so my body must have really needed it.

Welcome to 3FC! This is a great place and the 40 somethings are a great group. I agree with everything that has been said so far. Start small, make a couple simple changes and build on that. Find a plan you can live with for the rest of your life, it's not about dieting it's about changing your lifestyle. It's very easy to use the scale as the only indicator of success but many of us here also realize that the NSV's (non scale victories) are just as important. Changes in bloodwork, ease of movement, taking steps or hills without being winded, wearing baggy clothes are all examples of changes you will see as well as a drop on the scale. Take some time to look at the goal pics on this site, read some of the success stories, they are people just like you who decided to make a change and did it! Much success to you!
I have added water-am up to 32 oz now..I am trying to cut down on the sweets(especially Chocolate) which is hard. Some days I do ok other days I want all I can find.
I like the 40-something forum..It is good to know that there are many out there besides me.
