Having fun in MN and while I'm straying from the plan for eating, I have been keeping at the running. I'm up to 25 min runs and am thankful for the warmer weather here-no bettling snow & ice.
Off to the mall of America for some fun.
Hope everyone is doing well
Gotta get back in the swing of things after my trip! I did tons of walking at the hospital as his room was all the way on the other side of the hospital from the parking deck and I made sure we always used the stairs. Eating was awful though as we ate out every meal. That makes it hard to eat well.
I was able to run 2 miles and bike 12 miles today. Running was hard after not running since Thursday. I plan to run one more mile later as my daughter and I start "Girls on the Run" today at her school. We start out running a mile and work our way up to a 5K that we all run together. It is a great program for girls in 3rd-5th grade to get active.
Have fun at the mall Mel!! I have never been but would like to someday.
Beemer - I'm so happy to hear the news about your father-in-law!
I passed my 700 min. goal today -- woo hoo! Now I'm busy thinking about April. I'm considering buying some small arm weights and see what a month of using those every other day will do. But I'm not sure I'm ready to commit... I'm still working on the C25k - Did Week 4 Day 2 today, along with time on the elliptical.
I hope everyone is doing well and your goals are in sight!
That is awesome that you are passing your goal newleaf!! I keep setting mine weekly. I did fine until I had to run to North Carolina last week. I missed two days and am not sure I will make them up or not. We did do tons of walking and stair climbing while there so that should count some.
I did a full 5K today!! That went pretty well considering it was quite cold, a pretty hilly area and I ran it with a friend who is just getting over bronchitis. She kind of held me up some but I finished it in about 35 minutes if you take away me having to wait up for her some. I felt pretty good as she is a regular runner and I blew her away. I guess I shouldn't feel too great though as she was just sick and hadn't run for a bit. I also did my recumbent bike for 12 miles before the run. Am I crazy or what? Not sure if I will be able to keep up this pace forever but it is working for now.
I finally got around to tallying up my Minutes of exercise for March:
March 1-7: 361
March 8-14: 213
March 15-21: 201
March 22-28: 171
Total- 946 minutes
I think I originally said I'd do ~1,000 minutes- so I'm nearly there-I'm now running 25-28 minutes at a time- & I officially entered the mother's day 5K walk/run. I registered as a walker but I hope to run a fair portion of it.
Now just need to figure out how to get a run in with all this snow!
Well today I went out and ran my 5K on the street and I am so bummed with my time and stamina. I had been doing my 5K in @40 minutes on the treadmill and then started doing 15/5/15/5/15/5 for a total of 4.5 miles on M-W-F.
Decided in preparation of the 5K coming up (April 11) I should start running for real on the street and it sucked!!! I couldn't even run 5 minutes before getting winded and I won't even tell you how high my heart rate got. I finished in 43:51 and it did not feel good.
At this point I will not be running in the upcoming 5K (may walk) and thinking I should start C25K again running on the street.
For those that run do you find that big of a different between the treadmill and street? I live in a VERY flat area.
CruiseCAT - generally speaking, I find doing anything out in the real world much more difficult than on the equipment. I have no scientific knowledge to back this up, but it seems to me with the treadmill, really all you have to do is lift your legs and put them down, you don't actually have to expend the energy to propel yourself forward, to make the ground move underneath you. The fact that you live in a flat area probably minimizes the effect to a certain degree, but certainly not completely.
Don't get me wrong, I think running on the treadmill is GREAT exercise, and I certainly burn more calories doing that than using the elliptical. BUT, clearly it's not as good as running on the open road.
I've been amazed in the past, that with the amount of stamina I have on the elliptical, how difficult it can be to get out on my bike and ride the hills around here.
Sorry you had a rough go of it! I'm sure it will get better with time...
I run both outside and on a treadmill depending on the weather. I actually find running outside easier. I think for me it is a mental thing where running outside is much more interesting than running on the treadmill. I do like running on a treadmill for the fact of climate control and being near a bathroom just in case though.
What was the wind like when you ran CAT? My friend that I ran with on Friday outside says that the wind really affects her and her breathing and she thinks the treadmill is easier for her. Maybe the wind affects you differently, plus was it warmer outside than inside your house? That won't help either. Maybe it would be a good idea to do the C25K like you said. I bet you will be able to do it in no time since you have come so far!
Cat- I've never run on a treadmill, so I don't have a comparison- I find running difficult no matter what- I keep hoping it will get easier & I think it will...someday.
But if this was your first run outside- don't get discouraged...there are so many other factors that can come into play. Now mind you- I'm still just running for time- not distance (ran 26min tonight) but only covered ~2.1 miles (measured by gmaps pedometer). Just keep at it!
I plan on 'checking out' the race course before the race- so I'm not freaked out if there are hills etc.
You can do it!
Thank you for responding and your encouraging words.
I have decided that starting next week I am going to do C25K again (on the road).
The temperature yesterday morning was a little brisk (low 50's) and there was a wind that took my breath several times. In the desert we usually have wind in the afternoon but not in the morning; yesterday's definitely had bite to it.
I just felt so defeated when I got home that I was ready to give up running altogether. I'm better today and feel good that I have a plan and IF it doesn't work I can always continue on the treadmill.
CruiseCAT - great attitude. It sounds like you are on your way! And worst case, it's not like running on the treadmill is *bad* exercise; it's *great* exercise. BUT, I know that you won't find yourself at worst case. I'm sure you'll get this on road thing under your belt.
Okay ladies- last day of March...how did we all do on our goals?
With my 47 minutes last night my total for March is 993 minutes- only 7 minutes short of my goal. I'm satisfied with it and if we continue for April (which I think is a great idea as it keeps me accountable) I will have a monthly goal of 1200 minutes. I need to start cross training rather than just walking on my non-running days.
Wow, CanadaMel -- you ROCK!! You did awesome!! That was quite a goal you set out for yourself and you just about made it!! I also agree, having hte goal and the thread is great... I want to continue in April, too.
As for me, my goal was 700 minutes and I blew past it at 851 minutes. I need to think about what my April goal will be.
ETA: I just went back and looked -- from 3/1 - 3/31 I lost 5.6 lbs, so I feel great about that! That's rewarding and motivating!!
