Diet Grocery staples?
I'm Always on the look-out for new variety in my food.
I've had a really rough food week and I'm going grocery shopping tomorrow to restock on good healthy options. What are some healthy staples you couldn't do without? What do you grab pretty much every time you go to the store? For me, definitely fat free cheese, lean ground beef, baby greens salad mix, tuna, salsa, eggs, bottled water and Greek non-fat yogurt. I also love my lean cuisine Mac and cheese even though I know it's not super nutritious. And sugar free popsicles! Yum :) |
Fresh green vegetables! Things i can just bung in a pan and boil and have on the side of my meal, if it doesnt have veg in it already. Easy way to cut down on meats and sauces and keep full too. Also, wholegrain pitas! Stuff them with anything and go! I just treated myself to some wholemeal pasta as well today- love it! I was going to say yoghurt, but you got that covered already :D

Organic Dates (I have 2 a day usually inbetween lunch and dinner and they satisfy my sweet cravings)
Fresh Veg Fruit Yoghurt Wholemeal Pitta Bread Cheese I always get a healthy soup too. Really handy for lunch and soup keeps you full longer :) That's some of the stuff anyway, good luck! |
Here is what I always buy for my family... very tight on budget so these are all cheap too!
Whole chickens (usually can get this 89 cents a pound, use the meat, save the lard for cooking (for husband and kids! I don't need the extra calories from that!), boil the bones for broth/chicken stock). Dry beans, lentils, split peas. Potatoes, good for baking and topping with things. Lots of frozen veggies, spinach, green beans, broccoli (or fresh from farmers market if in season... though this is not often here as we live far north) Fresh carrots and celery and onion, good to eat raw or a good filler or side for any meal Ground beef in a 10lb tube from GFS! (only 2.19 a pound for good quality meat!) Salsa, canned tomato Bananas, apples Oatmeal Eggs Cabbage or lettuce... more often cabbage because I can use it in soups too if we don't eat it all raw I do a lot of shopping at GFS because buying in bulk is WAY cheaper. |
Chicken thighs
Ground turkey Greek yogurt Eggs Avocados Kale Spinach Bell peppers, carrots, celery 4% cottage cheese Kefir Grass-fed heavy cream Coffee Nuts Lemons Sardines or tuna Sometimes I feel a little guilty for how dairy-heavy my supposedly 'paleo' eating choices are, but it works out great for me! Edit - oh, munchievictim, have you ever mixed tuna with cottage cheese, and perhaps just a little bit of avocado? Season it and it's fantastic! This recipe is great: http://www.katheats.com/favorite-foo...e-cheese-salad |
