Diet Grocery staples?
I'm Always on the look-out for new variety in my food.
I've had a really rough food week and I'm going grocery shopping tomorrow to restock on good healthy options. What are some healthy staples you couldn't do without? What do you grab pretty much every time you go to the store? For me, definitely fat free cheese, lean ground beef, baby greens salad mix, tuna, salsa, eggs, bottled water and Greek non-fat yogurt. I also love my lean cuisine Mac and cheese even though I know it's not super nutritious. And sugar free popsicles! Yum :) |
Fresh green vegetables! Things i can just bung in a pan and boil and have on the side of my meal, if it doesnt have veg in it already. Easy way to cut down on meats and sauces and keep full too. Also, wholegrain pitas! Stuff them with anything and go! I just treated myself to some wholemeal pasta as well today- love it! I was going to say yoghurt, but you got that covered already :D
|
Broccoli
Low fat cottage cheese 1% milk Bananas Apples Frozen berries Lite multigrain English muffins Eggs Some other vegetable, like spinach or red peppers |

Organic Dates (I have 2 a day usually inbetween lunch and dinner and they satisfy my sweet cravings)
Fresh Veg Fruit Yoghurt Wholemeal Pitta Bread Cheese I always get a healthy soup too. Really handy for lunch and soup keeps you full longer :) That's some of the stuff anyway, good luck! |
Here is what I always buy for my family... very tight on budget so these are all cheap too!
Whole chickens (usually can get this 89 cents a pound, use the meat, save the lard for cooking (for husband and kids! I don't need the extra calories from that!), boil the bones for broth/chicken stock). Dry beans, lentils, split peas. Potatoes, good for baking and topping with things. Lots of frozen veggies, spinach, green beans, broccoli (or fresh from farmers market if in season... though this is not often here as we live far north) Fresh carrots and celery and onion, good to eat raw or a good filler or side for any meal Ground beef in a 10lb tube from GFS! (only 2.19 a pound for good quality meat!) Salsa, canned tomato Bananas, apples Oatmeal Eggs Cabbage or lettuce... more often cabbage because I can use it in soups too if we don't eat it all raw I do a lot of shopping at GFS because buying in bulk is WAY cheaper. |
Chicken thighs
Ground turkey Greek yogurt Eggs Avocados Kale Spinach Bell peppers, carrots, celery 4% cottage cheese Kefir Grass-fed heavy cream Coffee Nuts Lemons Sardines or tuna Sometimes I feel a little guilty for how dairy-heavy my supposedly 'paleo' eating choices are, but it works out great for me! Edit - oh, munchievictim, have you ever mixed tuna with cottage cheese, and perhaps just a little bit of avocado? Season it and it's fantastic! This recipe is great: http://www.katheats.com/favorite-foo...e-cheese-salad |

Something I've found really interesting is that I eat almost the same foods as I did back in the states. |
I have found that too, xiaobaicai! Kimchi is a lifesaver, you can eat the whole jar and it's like 100 calories (though salty as heck).
I eat the same things at home all the time: Chicken breast Salmon Greek yogurt Oranges Frozen vegetables (California mix, butternut squash) Spring/baby salad mix (I eat a whole bag for lunch many days) Tomatoes Red peppers Peanut butter 35 calorie sliced whole wheat bread Bok choy Japanese sweet potato Sesame oil Olive oil |

|
Agave (if I am out)
Grapefruit Whole wheat bread English muffins Eggs Milk Cheese (yes, full fat. I don't like all the extra additives that makes fat free cheese taste like cheese.. well, it's suppose to taste like cheese...) Greek Yogurt Chicken Ground Buffalo Salmon Nuts All sorts of fruit All sorts of veggies. Lots of spinach, avocados, carrots, garlic, cucumber, tomato Julie's Organic 100 calorie chocolate popsicles. Amazing. Miracle Noodle's Some sort of all natural 0 calorie soda - only drink two a week Coconut water Sweet potatoes. I love these.. I cook a huge one and then take half for lunch the next day |

Apples Oranges Avocado Green/Red Bell Peppers Yogurt (I used to get Greek yogurt, but since I moved overseas it's been hard to find...) Tofu i eat a LOT of fruits & veggies. usually when i have a sugar craving, i try to eat fruit instead of candy/baked goods that are laying around in my house. also, i eat rice almost everyday (i'm Korean), but limit myself to 1/2 cup & try to eat a lot of veggie / tofu side dishes. |

Nature's Path pumpkin flax granola
Soy milk (although I've been thinking of trying coconut) Pure Protein protein bars (20g protein and maybe 7g sugar per bar) Greek yogurt cups for afternoon snacks at work Fruit for a morning snack at work--I've been branching out lately beyond apples and bananas to strawberries, plums, pineapple and kiwi, too! Grape tomatoes, baby carrots, and snow or sugar snap peas, which I eat with my lunch Flat Out multigrain flax wraps Sometimes nuts or a sweet treat (Laura's Wholesome Junk Food cookie bite-lettes are DELICIOUS) And dinners tend to be recipes from the Internet that include lean protein, veg and, more often than not, whole grain something (pasta, bread, quinoa, rice, etc.). That changes to week; I'm working on getting 10-12 yummy healthy recipes with about 4-5 servings each so I can make two or three of them over a few days and then eat the leftovers for another week until they're gone. :D It's so much easier to eat a healthy dinner when it's already made. |
Meat - usually pork and ground beef. Some lamb or steak if it's in the budget (all local, BTW and top quality though not completely grass fed)
Eggs - About 5 dozen per week. Fresh veggies (also local when in season) Frozen berries Unsalted butter Coffee (Mostly for DH) 2 cans of coconut milk per month (Love this stuff) |
I always get Sarahlee delight bread, it's 45 calories per slice. Best bread I've found calorie wise and it's really good !
I always get Oscar Mayer mesquite turkey lunch meat. fat or 2% cheese I ALWAYS get soup, I eat it everyday basically. I really like camp Ella homestyle chicken noodle. usually, I'll just eat the broth and give the noodles to fiancé, lol. laughing cow cheese wedges. chicken tenderloins a lean cuisine or two fresh veggies for salads lite wishbone Italian strawberries, kiwis, watermelon lite tuna in water PICKLES - addicted tilapia filets |
Love the idea of this post. These are usually always in my kitchen.
Produce Strawberries Apples Bananas (I put old ones in the freezer for banana bread of smoothies) Carrots Diary String Cheese or Laughing Cow Cheese Feta Cheese or Parmesan Yogurt Snacks Snack bar of some sort Hummus Nuts |
Changes as I discover what works but at the moment; leeks, cabbage, carrots and potatoes. Lean meat for sandwiches and lettuce. Semi skimmed milk and some sort of nut to add protein to breakfast. Small bars Dairy milk chocolate and Special K mini bites for treats. Like picking so grapes are handy!

I went grocery shopping last night and got a healthy haul for $40. I tend to vary what I buy based on sales, though. There were some really good prices at the store last night!
From what I remember, I got: -1 whole chicken -pack of ground turkey -pack of chicken tenderloins -3 cans of tuna -asparagus, 2 avocados, cucumber, 2 sweet potatoes, red onion, green beans -3 oranges, box of strawberries -6 packs of steamfresh veggies (one of the biggest obstacles to my eating more veggies is laziness. If I am lazy I don't want to prep veg - so these are very handy) -box of Kashi golean crunch |
