I'm wanting something that tells me how far I've gone when I run. I know Ipod has the new sync equipment out with nike... which I would looove to have. However, it's a little over my budget. Does anyone know if there is any similar equipment at a lower price?
My droid has an app that syncs with google maps. It's called like MyTrack or something. Obviously this only works if you have some sort of high tech cell phone.
I have a Moto Droid and it's to big for me to want it on me when I run. I do have a app that I use to track my calories and exercise and I LOVE it! It makes life so easy.
I suggest going to mapmyrun and track your route. Its a lot of fun. I live very rural and had no problem mapping my routes.
When I run I do take my iPod nano in an arm band. I wouldn't really want anything bigger/ more cumbersome than that. It has a stop watch, lets me time my whole run & laps. I think it has a pedometer but i don't use it.
I'm still a beginner. One of the things I'm kinda dreading is working up to distances where I'll need to carry a snack and/or drink. I'm a ways from that though.
I mapped out my run. And I have been running a mile everyday until yesterday I started going 1.5. Ill slowly add on to that. But, yeah.. how does that work? I can't imagine running with a water bottle.. hmm.. I already run with my phone in hand and it is kind of annoying.

I also use mapmyrun... and I fanny pack when I run to carry my keys, phone etc. Yep, I'm cool. I would love a camelback for longer runs but it's too expensive! I don't take a water bottle because I try to run through parks that have water fountains around.
for distances less than 2 miles i just try to hydrate before a run (without chugging a ton 5 minutes before hitting the asphalt) they do make water bottles with straps/handles that sit right over your hand (i'd say rig some up with duct tape...) because grrrrriping stuff makes your whole upper body tense. i leave as much stuff behind as i can-definitely no phone- when i'm road running, which is hilarious because when i run on the treadmill i pull out all the stops with magazines, phones, sweat towels, waters, and a ton of other bs. hehehe!

My boyfriend would not be happy if I went out for a run without my phone. I've had an incident on the trails where I felt like I was being stalked and I had to call him to come pick me up (I now carry mace). I have one pair of running pants that have a pocket that zips.. but usually I carry it in my hand. It can be annoying, but it makes me feel safe so it's worth it. I haven't had a problem with feeling like I'm dying for water yet. But I hope to go long distances soon, hopefully hydrating before will do the trick. However, I might need a porta potty then
You mentioned iPod, do you have an iPhone or iPod Touch? If so, there is an app called Runkeeper that uses the GPS on your phone to track. Otherwise, I also use MapMyRun and love it.
yikes, well totally keep it safe with your cell phone in that case. who ever said the two dirtiest words: fanny. pack. she may be right! time to start rocking a fanny pack! i love it.

I got some running mace that I carry with me when I run at night. Otherwise stick to safe, open, well lite, and people populated trails!
For me I leave my cell behind, and always run near people or with a buddy. I put my house keys on a key ring and loop it to my sports bra or in my shoe laces tucked in. My mp3 clips onto my hat or bra! So nice. You an also wear a bracelet that has all of your emergency info on it just in case something truly bad happens.
As for tracking distance, I use google pedometer. It's SO simple. You mark your starting and end point, and it does all the work for ya

After that incident I carry mace as well. It's pink and very intimidating haha.. Our trails have a lot more people on them since the weather is so pretty, and I haven't felt unsafe since that incident.
Thanks for all of the suggestions! I used mapmyrun.com and it was very helpful. I know the distance I have been running, and I mapped out a run for my goal.
