Default Yikes!

While at Bed Bath and Beyond yesterday I decided to look at digital scales. Can weighing on a concrete floor change things? The scale had me 25-30 pounds over my home scale!!! I've weighed other things on my home scale and it seems accurate within a few pounds but 3 different digital ones had me at +25. Can the surface you put the scale on make that much difference?

YES!!!

I've never seen a 25 lb difference, but obviously that's not accurate!! What were you weighing on at home? carpet? tile?

You should weigh MORE on a carpet than on a hard surface according to Physicists: http://www.newscientist.com/article/...d-surface.html

The scales I've had say that they are more accurate on a hard surface, though.

Ceramic tile at home. I knew I'd gained 5 or so the last few weeks (really not been eating enough and not exercising-rough couple weeks) but to have the scale read over 200 pounds really put a dent in my day. All of my clothes still fit...but I'm wondering if my home scale is just really low and I really am over 200 lbs, seems like they wouldn't all just not be calibrated properly at the store, and the same level of non-callibration.

I've heard that your weight will differ depending on where you weigh yourself - I get two different weights in my bedroom and my bathroom so I always weigh myself in the same place every morning.

You could try changing the batteries in your home scale? That's the only thing I can think of...

As far as I know you should never weigh yourself on carpet. Scales can even read wrong on tile/ceramic floors due to how level they are...because I too get different numbers in my bathroom than I do in my bedroom, and my dining room. My wii fit also weighs me differently than the scale, and I usually like its number much better lol.

Maybe I'll try the wii fit scale tomorrow, lol see if I like that # better. I just find it hard to believe I've gained 20-30 lbs and not noticed it in clothing or anything but to have 3 scales say it makes me wonder...

I used to work there. And we didn't call it the **** hole for nothing . On a more serious note, were you testing the display? Because lots of people do the same thing and they tend to get out of whack after a while. You might've just stepped on a screwy one.

A question kinda on topic with all this... If you have a scale in a basement, will it weigh differently?

clickit - No. The force of gravity acting upon you is still the same (well, if you want to get technical, there is a slight variation but would only affect you if you were measuring out to a ridiculous amount of siginificant digits...like to the .000000001 accuracy.).

aliquot - Thanks! I was kinda worried that I had been tricking myself that I lost the weight that I have lost. I'm paranoid like that, and I know it was a stupid question but thanks for clearing that up.
