Frame size?

I've always gone by the wrist rule, and at my height, I'm right on the cusp of medium/large frame. Also, going by the rule if your index/thumb meet around your wrist, you're medium, if they don't, you're large, if they overlap, you're small.
I don't believe in the finger overlapping rule. My wrists are 7 inches around it says large fame for me and my fingers touch. I just happen to have really long fingers!
  • I think it's interesting too that people lose weight in their wrists, so I wonder can you be considered "large" frame at your highest weight and then go down to "medium" or even "small" as you lose?

I kind of took my frame size into account when choosing my goal weight. I think 132 is right in the middle for my height as I always assumed I was medium to large framed. According to this calculator I am a small frame (5'5", 6.25 in wrist so it's probably the high end of small) and that is really weird to me. I've always been able to put my fingers around my wrist with them overlapping but I thought I just had long fingers. I think I'll keep my goal weight the same, because even if I do have a smallish frame, my hips have always been very wide and yes, my boyfriend is partial to the boobs and booty .

My mom always told me I'm "big boned" like my dad, but I wonder if maybe under here somewhere is a small frame like my mom's? That would be awesome- I guess there's just one way to find out!
  • Hmmmm . . . At 5'4" and with 6" wrists, I'm medium frame. That's kinda what I've always thought I was. I'll be about a size 8 at 145, which I will be more than happy to maintain.
  • I didn't lose a great deal compared to some, but in losing just 65 pounds I lost at least 1/2 an inch from my wrist.

Your frame size doesn't change when you lose weight. It's just that this particular way of measuring it is inaccurate if you're overweight (and I'm just leaving aside whether it's even accurate at lower weights either).
  • I think I might have a medium/large frame. My mom always told me I had a large frame, that I really was "big boned" and stuff, but I think I just have a muscular body that makes me look like I could have a big frame.

Lately, now that I'm down more weight, and looking at other people on here, I'm pretty sure I'm closer to having a medium frame. It's weird, since I thought for sure for so long I had a huge frame. I guess my goal weight will have to be changed once I get down there.
  • This thread is fascinating! I'm glad I took my wrist measurements before I started this weight loss journey and it will be very interesting to note if there has been any change in wrist size over time. But I can just tell that even if I was able to be in a category of medium frame after my weight loss, I still wouldn't be that skinny-minnie that for some reason I desire. I can tell because my sister, who has always been skinny-minnie, is the same height as me but her bones look so much different. Oh, well! I know I'll get over it as my body begins to progress toward good health.
  • I thought about my frame size when I set my goal weight as well. According to my BMI a good weight range for my height was between 104-141lbs. I think i would be satisfied staying towards the higher end of that (140lbs). I was an average 150lbs in high school and looked much MUCH thinner than I was because of my frame size. Ribs and hip bones were extremely pronounced at that weight and being only 5'3".
  • just to touch on the whole wrist size thing...they do shrink... I had a bracelet that at my highest weight needed an extender and now fits loosely without it... pretty sweet... just like my fingers have gotten skinnier

Haha I love losing weight in my hands...it was kind of a NSV for me, to actually see my knuckles again! haha
  • it says the obvious lol i have a large frame. i always knew that. lol im 5'7 with quarter back shoulders (IMO) big feet and wide hips. im going to measure myself with in the next day or two and keep a record of it each week. im going to be doing that with my fiance too. hopefully to be posting pictures of us in the next few weeks with results.
  • i love losing weight in my fingers too!! i don't wear rings often but i have a couple and they stopped fitting at one point. plus if the bf ever wants the ring size () i would like to say a size that doesn't cost extra to get.
  • Thank you for posting this! I had no idea there was such a thing as frame size. This is really cool! (Lol.) It turns out that I'm a small frame as well, although I would have never considered myself to be one. It has given me new perspective on my target weight. As some of the other ladies mentioned, I'm not changing my current goal weight (and I'm only 5 pounds off the high end of my range anyway) but it's nice to have the info. I am looking at the possibilities for my body through a new lens lately and this goes right along with that.

Me too.... I always had chubby hobbit hands but now I'm actually starting to have womanly fingers. About damn time.
  • I have a small frame (5'4" with a barely 5" wrist span), and at my current weight, 138 lbs, I still look visibly overweight. It's a pain because when I was 158 lbs, my goal was 140 lbs, but when I hit 140 lbs I still didn't look good. Now my short term goal is 130 lbs and my long-term goal is 120-125 lbs. My goal is to be in that range by the time I start my Masters in October.
  • I have no clue what to believe for those calculators. Apparently, I am considered to have a small frame for 5'11" using both the wrist measurement and the elbow breadth measurement. That's craziness and a half right there.

That means my weight is ideal between 135 lbs and 148 lbs. Are you kidding me?! Out of curiosity, I looked up what supermodels weigh as I assume they've gotta be in that area when they're my height... apparently they are on average around 127 lbs.
So even if I get down to what I believe is a ridiculous number, it's still not enough to be a model. Oh well! At 27 I'm too old anyway. lol

I don't know what to say. Apparently the 10 lb loss that I'm aiming for at the moment could grow to as much as 30 lbs if I use these standards.
    whoa.
