Default Whey Protein Powders?

My weight loss buddy is currently using whey protein powders every morning (in shakes, yogurt, oatmeal etc)and says her personal trainer swears by it.

Is anyone doing this as well? What do you guys think? Are there any benefits? And does anyone know where whey protein would fit with the Canadian Food Guide?

Thanks

If you're aiming for weight loss, I wouldn't suggest it. UNLESS you're having problems getting your suggested amount of protein each day. If you're trying to build muscle, it can help. I've heard of people having some as a shake in the morning in place of breakfast, either they don't prefer to eat or are in a hurry. You can get your protein in many other places, so I personally wouldn't take a supplement. However, my hubby is a body builder and has protein shakes in relation to his workouts...

They aren't used for weight loss - they are only to supplement protein - for example, if you've only eaten 75g of protein and you want to eat 100g but don't feel like cooking, you can throw 1 scoop (usually 25g protein) into a cup with water and drink it.

Now, you can use them in your weight loss plan - but they replace protein, so you have to keep that in mind. A scoop is usually 100-150 calories so you need to factor that in.

In the Canadian food guide, it fits in with proteins (not dairy, which might confuse some).

I use a protein shake once per day but I'm not trying to lose right now.
