Parents have seen us in all our worst times, making choises and then not following through, our fears, our weaknesses, all the things we have long put behind us and in fact can no longer even relate to. We change so much in life. There comes a time when you mentally look back at your own life and you know what you have done and dealt with but it doesn't even feel like you....more like watching a movie. So don't worry or feel lessened by his response. He is responding in old ways (and probably truth be known to how he feels about his personal dreams deep inside), You have moved on and are creating a grand life for yourself in time he will see the results and bust his button for you in pride so hang in there!
