I find that right after slicing or eating your allotment is a good time to throw out.

The summer-y fruit pies I make are pretty -- well, I don't know about "healthy" but I even do a whole-wheat crust and they are not as much as a 'waste' of calories. Those I leave in the fridge for my husband as well as allow myself 1 more slice over the days before I throw out.

But for my last birthday, I had had an uncharacteristic hankering for full-on calorific ooey gooey cake -- frosting, everything -- so I bought us each a moderately cut slice at a bakery. I'm really pleased with how that worked out. It's a craving I'd had for weeks prior, I enjoyed it immensely and it's downright funny to me that I was truly 'done' after only 2/3 of this slice that wasn't very large-looking and had already been 'counted' in my notebook.
