I'm at my moms house and there is a platter with a dozen vanilla cupcakes in front. Of my face. What do I do I need encouragment to not eat a cupcake its such a waste of calories. How do you stay away when trigger foods are right in your face?
2) eat a measured portion and don't let it bother me.
if you let it bother you and get you stressed, it's too easy to slip into the "might as well get hung for a sheep as for a lamb" mentality and go whole-hog. look on this as practice for when you have to rejoin the real world of food.

Sometimes I have a bit of something and sometimes I don't. I try to remember that even though it'll taste nice for a moment that that's it. If I feel like I'm going to feel guilty afterwards I'll stay away, drink some water and do something else. If you're really hungry eat something healthy instead and if you're not then that's probably your answer.
Put them away where they aren't right in front of you. I can't have stuff like that in my house. If someone must have a sweet here, I make them keep it off the counter.
I absolutely love cake, whether in small cup form or whole round/square form. I have been known to eat frosting just 'cuz. Lots of it. I had one cupcake on Easter and that was my compromise because I traded eating macaroni salad for it. Either eat one, and don't eat something else, or tell yourself it is a test, and that those are NOT YOURS, and walk away. Think of it like stealing food from the work fridge.
i hear ya there...and its not even in front of my face...im battling NOT going to the staff lounge and eating cake that i KNOW is down there...ugggghhhh hard
Make a decision about what you're going to do or not do with them ASAP. The longer you're indecisive, the more stress you're going to carry over it and the more likely you'll cave in and eat more than you'd allow on your plan.
I do my best not to be around any temptations because I'm not sure I can resist them. If those cupcakes were right in front of me I'd probably just find something to keep me busy and not think about them, or maybe have a low calorie snack instead to nibble on.
I can smell those cupcakes all the way at my house. lol If you are not going to give in you will likely either need move yourself or move the cupcakes. If it were me I would actually leave the room and ask somebody else to put them away because if I touch them, they are as good as in my belly. Sometimes a walk or a glass of water works as a distraction for me.

You know, I have never seen someone suggest this before, and I love it! If you just say "those do not belong to me and it's stealing" it takes the option of eating them away. I might use that!
