Default Coconut oil?

I've been reading a lot about coconut oil and I'm wondering if it would be considered one of the "good" oils. I went ahead and bought some yesterday, it's like $15 for a 16 oz. jar but that should last a lifetime! It was solidified so I put one spoonful in a little cup of hot water and melted it, then drank it. I had tried just eating it from the spoon and about gagged. It has a coconut smell and taste, but isn't sweet. It's hard to describe actually.

Check out Buyer Beware. Someone posted in there about it. It is a saturated fat and can affect your cholesterol.

I found this on that site I listed -- wonder if it makes a difference that I got this virgin oil.

Quote:
Studies were done to show that coconut oil, and all saturated fats, were bad for one's health because they raised serum cholesterol levels. However, these studies were done on hydrogenated coconut oil, and all hydrogenated oils produce higher serum cholesterol levels, whether they are saturated or not.
The one I got says it's not hydrogenated; has 0 trans fats.

Kathy,

I bought some a few months ago after an article came out in For Women First magazine. I use it as my good oil but I don't think WW would consider it as a good oil because it is hydrogenated. As little as I use, I don't think it will have a material effect on my cholesterol levels. I bought mine at Wal-Mart for about $3.00 so if you continue to use it and need more, you might want to purchase it there to save some bucks.

One other thing ... I thought all solid oils were hydrogenated so I'm not sure how your coconut oil can state on the label that it's not if it's solid at room temperature.

My label states that it contains no hydrogenated oils. It's solid at temps above 76º and liquid under 76º. The first day I got it, I had left it in the car overnight and it was a little cool outside, so it was solid. Then I brought it in to work, and I guess it's warmer than that in here because this morning it is liquid.
