Living Maintenance - No Halloween Candy - take the pledge with me!

It's that time of year again. There's already an entire aisle devoted to candy in CVS, the $ store, and Walmart, and those are the only stores I've been in this week. I'm sure it's in all the other stores too!
Snickers will always hold a soft spot in my heart... but I don't need them. Halloween candy isn't special. It's available year-round in a differently colored wrapper if I really "need" it! My mom's apple butter is special, or my dad's homemade apple pie that I might get once a year if I'm lucky, that's special.
On top of that my "red line" is of distant memory, fitting into my winter clothes is a bit of a daunting prospect right now... there are so many reasons I'm doing this.
I pledge that I will not eat Halloween candy this year. I welcome anyone and everyone who wants to join me in this pledge! Anyone who's reading this is welcome, just because I'm posting it in the maintainers forum please don't feel you have to post here regularly to join in.
I will join you in the pledge! :high: And it goes for after Halloween too. Half off candy is no bargain!

I'm in!!! One fun size Almond Joy is okay, but I NEVER stop at one. It is far better for me to have none then to sit in front of an empty stack of wrappers wondering what the heck just happened.
This will be my 3rd year for a Halloween Candy Abstinence pledge. They work very well.

I'm in. I don't need to waste my calories on pretty packaged candies that never really satisfy, particularly when I know there will likely be homemade iced pumpkin cookies in my future that are much more satisfying if I want a holiday indulgence.

This is just what I needed to remind me why I stopped eating candy before. I love what Megan said: "Halloween candy isn't special. It's available year-round in a differently colored wrapper if I really "need" it! My mom's apple butter is special, or my dad's homemade apple pie that I might get once a year if I'm lucky, that's special."
I just need to remember this when someone offers a candy. :)

The aftermath is my downfall.
I am even starting to feel the longing for processed crap that comes along with Halloween, which totally sends me into a tailspin.
I pledge to avoid eating even ONE piece of Halloween candy BEFORE, DURING, or for the WEEKS AFTER this goshdarn holiday!!!
Yes. I do make this pledge!! :carrot:

This is weird, but I'm not going to do the pledge this year. This is why: we get few to no trick or treaters, my son is now in high school and it's totally uncool for him to go trick or treating, and even when the stuff is in the house I have control enough to either ignore it (especially if I buy the stuff I don't like) or I eat it in complete moderation (a mini bar every 3 or 4 days if I buy the stuff I do like).
For instance, I buy ice cream cones for DS and DH. I ALWAYS have them on hand. I had one on Saturday (after budgeting my calories for it). It was the first one I've had in over 6 months.
Good luck you all of you on your pledge! I will check in and let you know how my non-pledge is working however!

I'm with midwife - it'd be fine if I could stop at one piece, but I just can't, so count me in!
Allison, that's great that you can enjoy in moderation - it's definitely the key but I have not mastered it.
I also agree that there are things that are much more special - like the iced ginger cookies my family always has - and I will enjoy a few of those much more anyway!

I'm in, starting NOW. The ladies in my office buy chocolate ALL YEAR LONG. I can't even stick my yogurt in the fridge without having to wade through (literally) piles and bags and those clear plastic containers FULL of mini Hershey bars, Kisses, Krackles, etc., to get to it.
No chocolate for me!

I will pledge not to indulge EXCEPT on Halloween night. LOL! :) That was my plan last year and I am sticking to it!!!
BTW--guess what we do? After my kids eat until near death on Halloween night they brush their teeth and go to sleep. If they leave the rest of their candy outside their door the "Halloween Fairy" takes it and leaves a toy behind. THEY LOVE THIS! Last year I took all the leftover candy and helped stuff a neighbor's pinata with it! LOL.

Good point, it may be helpful to think about just how poor quality this stuff is.
A new ingredient has been popping up in chocolate. Companies such as hersey's are trying to sneak in a cheaper man made cocoa butter called PRPG. They're actually trying to change the definition of chocolate, so they don't have to use cocoa butter at all (since chocolate is defined by the percentage of cocoa butter)

In regards to the low quality issue: I totally agree! Who wants to waste 100 or more calories on some icky, yucky, tasteless crap? Wouldn't it be better served on something that both tastes good and is better for you? I weigh this decision each and every time I decide what to eat!

Interesting about the new replacement ingredient for cocoa butter. I know a lot of Easter "chocolate" up here is now just brown sweet wax. At Halloween my downfall is the mini chocolate bars - I can inhale about 20 of those no problem.
I'm good until the last kid leaves our front porch and then I'm face down in the halloween candy bowl. DH cruises the drug store for the half off stuff the next day.
This year I will give the last kid the remainder in the bowl and DH can take his candy and put it where he wants, without my seeing it.

For the first time ever last halloween I finally felt I was in control & had 2 mini's of each of my favorites - peanut m&m's & twix and you know what - they didn't even taste that great.
There's also a co-worker who is constantly refilling the candy jar at work with those little chocolate minitures. Usually I'm really good at passing it by but I had a few too much last week (yes, it was that time of the month) & I didn't feel good afterwards.
Also instead of my usual christmas family photo cards I decided I'm going to send out halloween family photo cards - so I get to wear a sexy witch costume. What better way to celebrate my one year maintenance milestone next month =)

Funny you say that! I was just telling my 10 year old the other day about this. Growing up we lived near a man who was the founder of a mid-west potato chip company, (Guy's). Every year we would walk about 1/2 mile to his house because he handed out full sized bags of potato chips for Halloween! LOL
I'll take the vow! I can never stop at one, especially Reese's peanut butter cups. If I start, I'll be 20 pounds heavier by Christmas...and OH, I don't want that!

I will take this pledge, even though I know it will be a tough one for me! I am a pharmacist in a grocery store, and they set up the seasonal candy display right across from the pharmacy. So I literally stare at it all day. Plus we always keep a basket of suckers, or other seasonal candy for kids on the counter. But I know I will be so proud of myself if I can do it, so I'm going to try!

I'd like to participate too. I'm already in a Halloween challenge to get to goal, and it just seems like the goal and the candy are completely incompatible. I've literally rolled down that slippery slope too many times! As Lori Bell mentioned, it's not so much the calories from the candy - it's having to weather the sugar cravings for a month afterward. I think that kicking off the holiday season with "owning" Halloween can only bring good things to Thanksgiving and Christmas. :)

I live in a very affluent neighborhood. My neighbors not only DO hand out chips on halloween (lots and LOTS AND LOTS of snack sized chips) but full sized cans of pop, FULL sized chocolate bars, full sized packs of gum etc.
The halloween fairy ALSO comes here that night and last year my husband took ALL of the candy to the library (his work) the next day! I was 1 month into my journey and allowed myself a small bag of bbq chips and a mini coffee crisp.
So this year I will allow myself the same. And then the next day it will all go away!

Sure, I'm in, but Halloween candy isn't much of a problem for me. We don't have kids and I hand out toys to the trick-or-treaters, so there's no Halloween candy in the house to tempt me. I wish everything were so easy.
If anyone is looking for an alternative to candy to hand out to trick or treaters, The Oriental Trading Company (http://www.orientaltrading.com/) is a great source for cheap toys in bulk.

Hey, for the record I didn't give out candy last year. I gave out GLOW bracelets. I bought a TON from Oriental Trading company and popped them together just before trick or treat. I can say the kids were coming from all around to get to "the house with the bracelets."
I may do the bracelets again--or else it will be pretzels.
High quality or not I plan to "smack me DOWN" some old-fashioned MARY JANES. I also like those SUPER CHEWY peanut butter things that are in the orange and black solid wrappers.

I take the pledge too. My husband and son are in charge of the Halloween candy and they make it disappear at the end of the night. A bigger problem is work where the candy is already sitting out. I am training my eyes to not even look there!
I'm in. No Halloween candy for me. I have just moved into an apartment complex where there are very few children, so I don't know what the holiday is like there. But I know what the aftermath is like at my office. Adults bring in their leftover candy -- or candy they're afraid to be alone with ;-) -- and their kids' excess candy, and there is candy everywhere, in the break room, on peoples' desks. For me, it's like walking through a field full of landmines.
Since when did Halloween become all about candy, anyway? We've done to it what we have done to Christmas. My mother tells me about trick or treating in the 1950s. They actually did tricks on peoples' doorsteps. They were likely to get an apple or a popcorn ball, if they were lucky. And the candy manufacturers hadn't gotten in on the fun-size craze yet & fully "monetized" the holiday & exploited its profit-making potential.
I think maybe I'm going to try to find a different way to observe Halloween, as a sort of fall & harvest festival & a Day of the Dead, like our neighbors to the south, in Mexico. As someone who's been on this earth for a little while, I do have my dead, whom I loved dearly, and still love, and I'd like to honor them. And also, to me, this crisp sunny period of weather is the most gorgeous time of the year. I cannot get enough of it. Both these feelings have nothing to do with gorging on cheap mass market candy bars.

ACK! It's not even October yet and I've broken the pledge!! My wonderful mother sent me a "fall" package and what do I find but a bag of Brach's fall mix.... oh dear... and I was quite hungry having not eaten dinner yet. I must confess that I ate over half the bag. But I am suffering from a rather upset stomach now, if that somehow makes it better - the remorse is there.
And it was delicious.

Well, Iris, my kids brought home goody bags from the pinata at the birthday party last night. Mini twix were involved. I thought about this challenge, checked the wrappers to make sure they weren't "Halloween" mini Twix, and chomped down. Pretty sad, huh?

I tried to give out bags of mini chips one year ( to prevent the chocolate bar problem) and I had to buy a second box to replace all the bags I ate.
This year Halloween is on Saturday so I'm buying the darn candy on that day. I can resist it very well at the grocery and drug stores as Halloween has it's own section that I don't go near!!!
And I remember getting home made popcorn balls and candy apples as a kid (before the time of razor blades and rat poison). One lady handed out comic books!!! My cousin (an avid comics fan) went to her house 4 times one year, switching costumes with me in the process. At several houses we had to do a trick (inside the house) before we were given the treats.
It's still my favorite holiday but it has changed very much since I was a trick or treater.

You guys are so funny...checking the wrappers...really sounds like something I would do...lol
What I think has been helping me to stay away from the Halloween candy this year is the fact at how long it has already been on the store shelves. I've seen it for a month already. Then, if you think about the after Halloween candy sales, it'll be even older yet. I wonder when this candy was actually made? How many preservatives are in that stuff to keep it fresh for so long??? If you buy a bag of Halloween Snickers on sale on November 1st, it's been sitting around at the store for at least 2 months. YIKES.

There are benefits to working outside. No desks, coffee rooms, etc. where people put treats. I do have several clients who will leave me Halloween/Easter chocolate because they have kids but it's only a few pieces.
They are genuinely being nice to me ( none of them could ever even imagine that I struggle with my weight) and I sometimes feel guilty throwing the stuff away but I know it'll trigger a binge later in the day.
Good point (whoever made it) about the staleness and preservatives in this stuff. Now I want it even less.

This challenge is working for me! I have no problem passing by the halloween candy just thinking about their cheap quality - I'd rather splurge on something that's worth it.
Of course, I had the opportunity when someone brought in some Trader Joe's dark chocolate covered almonds - I took a handful & ate them very slowly & it was much more satisfying then the other stuff. Thankfully candies disappear in our office really fast & the almonds were gone before I could contemplate on taking another handful.

Bumping this thread up as Halloween draws nearer! :dracula:
I haven't had any Halloween candy so far! :carrot: I did accidentally walk down the Halloween candy aisle at CVS a few weeks ago, and once I realized it practically ran the rest of the way to the pharmacy section. I'm sure they make you walk through the whole store to get your Rx on purpose. Evil marketers.

OK, So I have been feeling empowered by this pledge. But I am struggling right now. Not only is candy in the stores, in offices but it is now being delivered in little brown baggies to my front DOOR! MFer! ( if you have a foul mouth, you'll know what I mean.)
In my very lovely little town there is a very lovely little tradition of ghosting one another. That is when families drop off baggies of treats with a "you've been ghosted" sign on the baggie. did I say MFer !
So, I have been in a little binge zone right now, but I have NOT NOT had any halloween candy, as per my pledge. This ghosting thing is really pushing my limits!!!
This am while in a binge battle, I goshdarn (banging on the keyboard in annoyance with myself) had one of those goshdarn swedish fish right out from that goshdarn baggie. GOSHDARNIT!
AND, this am, I in weakness, bought 4, yes 4 baggies of chocolates to put into reciprocating ghost baggies (you need to do 10 minimum)for delivery tonight or tomorrow (when it stops raining.) They are in my car because I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT trust myself to be near those little devils. MFer!
Well, we did buy little doo-dahs/toys instead of candy for the real halloween night. I had more strength back then.
RE-PLEDGE, no more Halloween candy, no matter what the delivery method shall be!!! My kids and I will do our ghosting and moving those candies right on outta here.
:^: thx for listening to my little rant.

Kitty, stay strong!!!
So if this "ghost-ing" is anonymous, no one will know that whatever you give is from you, or if you don't ghost anyone at all, correct? Here's what I'd recommend - either put the bags you're given in your car and IMMEDIATELY ghost them to someone else, or just throw. them. out. I know, they're still in their wrappers, you could reach for them in your trash b/c the candy would still be clean, right? So "ruin it" with some really nasty coffee grounds or decomposing veggie/meat scraps or something... Drive around the corner and dump it in a public trash can, followed by a baggie of your dog's pooh or something. It's not worth it. Why do you "have to" do a minimum of 10? It sounds like plenty of people are ghosting, so even if you don't participate, no one will know and everyone will still get plenty of candy.
Your body is not a trash can. If you're worried that having the candy around will cause you to give in at a weak moment, just get rid of it as soon as you get it!
That's my advice. But it sounds like a really tough situation and I sympathize greatly. I would be cursing too! You can do it! Stay strong! :carrot:
kittycat40
10-15-2009, 01:47 PM
Yeah, no I can't throw it out. I would find a way to eat it. It REALLY AND TRULY will stay in my car until we pack the bags and deliver. It is sort of a game where little kids ring the doorbell and hidw while the ghosted one find the goodie bag. Cute for those who are not food plagued.
Those bags will be packed-a-plenty so I can move the "sauce."

Megan, you rock!! I'm taking up the same personal mantra, "My body is not a trashcan".
Midwife -- it's addictive, I tell ya! Addictive!! I know it's too late for advice, but if you ever find yourself not being able to stop eating something, either 1. get rid of it entirely, or 2. brush your teeth and gargle with Listerine. No one would want to eat after that!
Here's to a candy-free week for all of us!

Good advice, Meg. I didn't have anymore. It was a classic case of one is too many. Poor planning and I was hungry and thought, "Oh just one." Yeah, 5 later I was shaking myself back to reality. Can't do just one, so I won't. Next week is a holiday party that will be FUN and have really good food. I'll save my calories for that.
ETA: Thanks for the anticandy thoughts Bill!
One candy bar is too many, and a dozen aren't enough. Too bad so many of us (myself included!) have to learn that lesson over and over again! Congrats on stopping at five and I think you'll be able to stay away from  Halloween candy  for the rest of the week! :high:

I ate three pieces of candy corn yesterday. But the package said "Autumn Mix," not "Halloween"!

Thanks, Bingay. Unfortunately I have to confess... last week wasn't the best week nutrition-wise, and yup, I ate some Halloween candy. Like so many of us, it's such a slippery slope for me. I don't stop at one, which is why I always try to skip candy altogether.
So I need to remind myself of that mantra - "my body is not a trash can!" when I'm tempted again! There's still a tub sitting at work, ugh. But I will not eat it, gosh darn it! We can all do it!

I was going to wait until the 31st to buy candy for the trick or treaters, but it was on sale, buy one get one free. And I had coupons. So, it has been purchased, but the bags are still sealed. It's in the cabinet, taunting me, but as long as the bags aren't open, I think I will be able to resist.

There's been a little candy off and on at work. I try not to go to City Hall where there's a bowl on most of the desks! I have a bar of dark chocolate in my desk drawer for when the cravings get too bad - haven't broken into it yet! :)

What is it with the USA and candy corn? Everyone there seems to love it.
I had a handful given to me once and I couldn't eat it. Like consuming melted coloured lumps of sugar covered in chemicals.
BLEAGH!
Now chocolate on the other hand . . . :p

LOL Dagmar, I love eating like 2 pieces of candy corn, but more than that is kind of gross. I was joking with DH yesterday that since candy corn is largely made from corn syrup, it's like eating corn processed and modified to resemble corn!
(Or in other words, for those of you who like internet memes: Yo dawg, I heard you like corn so we put corn in your corn so you can eat corn while you eat corn!)

My weakness is peanut m&m's & I made a pact w/ one of my co-workers (who loves peanut m&m's) that if he ever sees those in the candy jar he needs to grab it before I do (he's one of those skinny guys w/ super fast metabolisms). It's been working great...as soon as I pass by & I see one the second I turn around it's gone =)
Incidently, there is only one person at work who fills up the candy jar. This other lady at work who is on WW is going to try to ask her politely to stop filling it. We'll see how it goes...

I bought halloween candy for the trick or treaters that come to my door. I only bought stuff I don't like, like Reese's PB cups and Starburst. DH hid all of it when I got home. I have no idea were.

So far so good! I thought I might eat a small candy bar from one of the bowls at the office. . .when I was alone and no one would see me. I looked at the choices and thought "there isn't a darned thing there I really want. I won't like how I feel afterward. It's not worth it. Besides, I made a pledge."
My body is not a trashcan. . .my body is not a trashcan. . .

 There's no candy at work - yet, which is a good thing. I go to other offices and look at the bowls, and then like you decide there's really nothing I really want, and walk on by. I'll be glad when this is over though. :)

Okay, confession time. I ate 3 "fun size" bags of M & M's and 2 Snickers, also "fun size"...why do they call it fun size? They are so tiny...they are NOT FUN, they are torture. 400 extra calories of crap. DANG IT!
I was making up my little zip-lock bags of goodies for the kids we will meet in town tonight. All of us country moms make up stuff to pass out in town (tiny town, population 37) since we live so far out in the country and it would take hours to go to each house. Anyway, I was making up my back-pack survival kits to pass out. Believe it or not, the kids actually love them and look forward to getting them. (A baggie with 10 band-aids, chap-stick, travel size kleenex, and travel size hand sanitizer...lol). I usually put in a few cough drops but since the school has become so strict with any kind of meds being brought to school I thought I would put in a few pieces of candy...Just happened to have TONS more candy than baggies. I could NOT stop at one. Ugh. The freaking scale was also up this morning, and I was hoping to have a few treats, (healthy) at the party tonight. Guess I will be measuring out my food again tonight. I suck sometimes. WEAK!

I ate none of the stuff. Big Yay. Absolutely none.
It helped that I finally decided to get off the HFCS bandwagon and bought boxes of raisins to hand out, so there were no temptations in my house. The big California Golden Raisins from Trader Joe's in my pantry are better than the ones in the little boxes, so I wasn't drooling for them.
I did walk over to a few neighbors to say hello, as I've done in the past, but this year I didn't "sample" their handouts.
It was a good Halloween.
Good job, Bill! :high:
I didn't have any either. We bought Skittles to hand out, one of the few candies that don't tempt me. There are lots leftover and I'll give them to DS, who is diabetic and uses them when he goes into a diabetic low because Skittles are pure sugar. Which makes me wonder what they do to the rest of us and our blood sugar?
Onward to November! I was just thinking about what an easy holiday Thanksgiving is because it's all about turkey!

Well, I stayed strong for the first 30 mins. Then I folded. I had prob 4-500 cals of halloween candy, which does count as a moderate sucess.
So, I did not keep my pledge but the pledge did help me keep a mindfullness and I expect full victory against those little buggers next year.
NOW, to avoid the buggers in my house!!! I will package them with the kiddos and place them very very very very far and inconveniently away.

Like Kitty, the pledge helped me control the potential damage that would have been done sans pledge (in 2007 & 2008 I totally abstained, dunno what was different this year?? Why did I make different choices?). Great job to all who abstained or who moderated intake! I have 2 almond joys and 1 butterfinger last night. Today is November 1! Halloween is over and the candy is dead to me! Dead to me!
I'm ready for a new month and to start thinking about Thanksgiving. I'm packing healthy food for work today and it's good cause I'll be in a controlled environment.

I made it through without having Halloween candy.
The cookies I made, though, for my daughter's party. . .I didn't do so well. Too many cookies yesterday! Suffering a well-deserved sugar hangover today. I make really good cookies. . . so good they are evil. . .EVIL I TELLS YA!!
I've recommitted to my healthy food and fitness plan today.
I think next year I will start a thread for no Halloween cookies. The no candy thread helped me; perhaps a no cookie thread will work the same magic.

I didn't have any halloween candy. I honestly wasn't interested ... much ;-)
I did make a big batch of blueberry-oat cookies the other day, mostly for my husband to take to a work presentation he's giving. Had one Friday night after dinner (counted in the day's calories) and it was good. Froze what was left (not much) for us to take one here and there.

No candy eaten. :) We had no candy, no kids, so home is safe (and I froze the rest of the cookies after our party on Friday). I'm hoping no one brings leftover candy to work - ha! fat chance of that!

I didn't *quite* make my pledge. I said I would only eat Halloween candy on Halloween, but I ate some Sunday too. The rest of the bag came to work today though and is safely out of sight in the break room, along with the cookies we had left over from our Halloween party.
Total damage isn't much. I'm only up 1lb today from Saturday's weight, which is my normal weekend water gain. I think this calorie cycling business is working pretty well for me.
I kept repeating to myself the maintainer's mantra: holi-DAYS, not holi-MONTHS. While I admit my Halloween turned into 2 days, I'm proud of myself for not squirreling away candy to eat over the next week or two.

Not perfect, but huge improvement over last year. Would have to guess less than 10 pieces. Have to guess because journaling did not happen as faithfully as it has when I was losing - gee, could there be a correlation there?

Thanksgiving doesn't have quite the same candy impact as Halloween and Christmas - for me, anyways.
I survived with pledge intact: no candy, no sweets -- nada, zippideedoodah since Labor Day. I had a few near misses, but no actual intake!

Well, so far I did pretty well...I had those 5 "fun size" pieces (400 calories total) I told you guys about the day before Halloween, and then "it" happened. "IT" was really weird. Halloween day I was getting my healthy snacks ready for the party we were attending that night and for some crazy reason, I reached for another bag of M&M's. My DH & DS were standing there when I did it, so I felt better not eating it in private. They didn't say anything with the first pack but when I opened the 2nd one, my son started to get worried...he said "Mom what are you doing??, look at the clock!!" I glanced at the digital clock on the microwave and it said...3:33. (My starting weight). Spooky. I put down the candy and haven't had another bite.
