I'm about to start this insane exercise thingy that a friend at work is doing; he wants company and accountability, and I'm willing to try any fool thing.
I begin tomorrow.
Ulp.
Anyone else doing P90X - or start doing it weighing 300+ pounds? Should I be afraid? Or tentatively joyful? Or something in between?
Its...pretty brutal. But the major thing to keep in mind is DO WHAT YOU CAN and don't phone it in, and don't force it either. It can be a little discouraging, but the best part is you've got bigger balls than much of America just for trying! You feel good when you're all sweaty after, even if you're like me and you couldn't do some of the things they busted out. But good luck!
No doubt it will be tough you'll need to modify moves quite a bit. I never did it at your weight but I was going to start it this week and ended up shifting over to doing Chlean Extreme instead after going through the videos. (will do P90x after)
For example: Pushups - Push off the wall until you can do on knees... then work up to regular ones.
Pull Ups: Use the bands. Even assisted ones on a bar would probably be a bad idea.
Anything Plyometic (jumping) be very careful. Soft padded surface or eliminate for the time being.
Stuff plank related or body weight related might have to be done on knees as well.
Did the shoulders/arms this morning; the chair dips weren't possible (I made the same motion, but not lifting my body weight with my arms) but otherwise it was totally doable. I used bands (like the one modify guy in the videos) instead of my 8# weights for most of it.
Excited to see what the next ones bring. Thanks for the words of encouragement.
I'm not sure what your exercise history is, but I was going to start P90X at my highest weight, but I read where it would be better to start with Power 90 and work myself up. (former sedintary couch potato here) I want to be in the 200's before beginning P90X.
I'm now on P90 Master's Series, and I'm so glad I started out slower. Good luck to you with P90X!
annieoh - Let us know how it goes! I think I just got discouraged because the first one I tried was the Shoulder/Back one with all the pull-ups, chin-ups and push-ups! Eeek. I took a look at the core one and that's when I switched programs.
Like the others mentioned, just do what you can! I just started doing P90X Lean 3 days ago, and I modify so many things. I figure as long as I feel the burn, I'm doing something right. Check out this video... this woman started at 440+:
Today was Plyometrics, which is code for high-impact jumping. One of the four folks on the screen was modifying, but I'm still definitely not a jumper. I modified further so that my feet weren't leaving the floor at the same time, and remembered my old work out videos advice to "march it out" if I couldn't do what was on the screen. It was definitely challenging (oh, my goodness if never lunge or squat again it will be too soon... wait, I do those again next Tuesday if not sooner), but doable.
Day three was chest/back - push-ups and pull-ups (modified with a rubber band thingy). 3 down, 87 to go.
Day four stymied me. It's the YogaX video and I literally can't do most of the moves, and don't know how to modify as I've never done Yoga. I've found a plus-sized Yoga video and ordered it so I can sub that it when it gets here. Until then, I'm doing an hour of aerobics (not the same, I know) to make up for my faltering. If the video is here by Saturday, I'll do it on Sunday instead of taking my day of rest. I'm counting today anyway, since I'm definitely staying on track, just foiled by my big fat tummy. 4 down, 86 to go.
I sucessfully finished week one - excepting that YogaX defeated me.
Today marked Week 2, Day 1: Chest + Back. And I did it! I pushed further than last week, working on improving my form (most exercises are still modified).
You go!!! I have the original Power 90 and it about kills me. It is awesome you are doing this. I am working my way up to the Power 90. I am currently at Richard Simmons level. :P
