Default Conquer the mid-summer malaise: August 2018 Check-in & Accountability Thread

Happy August, everyone! All are to the August 2018 daily weigh-in/check-in. Know that on this thread you will find support, encouragement, and endless kindness.

Here you can:
~track your weight daily, weekly or however you'd like ... but do check in
~keep track of what you eat or didn't eat
~keep track of your water intake or lack of
~keep track of your exercise/other goals
~vent, rant ... express yourself or just chit-chat

August is a long hot month where we often find ourselves mentally in two different spaces, anticipating the fall season and making the most of what is left of summer. The long days, heat and busyness that summer brings often leads to less focus and being more lax in our attitudes and habits. Whether this summer has been one of progress and success, yet you feel your energy waning, or one of struggle and challenges and in need of a fresh start, let's alter our perspective and view August as a mid-summer recharge in our efforts. Maybe you have your eye on fall. That's great but what do you need to be doing now to enter the fall season where you want to be? Maybe you're wishing for a summer do-over. While we can't bring back days and weeks already gone, there is still plenty of time to rethink our choices and set new goals so by the time summer ends we can still feel a sense of accomplishment.

All our welcome to our monthly neighborhood block party so welcome back to the regulars, and please make yourself known and comfortable if you're a lurker considering joining. We'd love to have you here!

Good on all of our August efforts!

Good luck to us all in meeting our goals in August!

I weighed in this morning August 1 at 162.8, a teeny bit above a former low (162.4) but happy-making in that things are trending in the right direction, finally. My goal for the end of the month is to solidly enter the new decade and hit 159. Now that I'm almost recovered from my back injury, I am going to resume regular cardio (4-5x per week). I have been okay about my back stretches but could be better. I am a bit scared to get back to weight lifting, so I am going to play that one by ear as to whether I resume that this month. I really want to weight lift again because that helps much more with body recomposition, even if it slows weight loss. I miss that feeling of improving strength, though of course I'm still a big zumba/cardio dance fan. I just don't want to hurt my back again, that was horrible. I have also not been great about tracking macros/calories every day so I'd like to get back to doing that too. The good news is I haven't gone off the rails even without tracking as much. What helps is that I've been eating a lot more volume dark leafy greens (spinach, arugula, kale) and cruciferous veggies (roasted broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage), which helps keep calories lower. I'm still doing low-carb high-fat but my macros tend to be more like 60% fat, 30% protein, and 10% carb--I get a lot of ideas from the 1200isplentyketo subreddit, if any of you ladies are interested. Because I exercise frequently, I tend to be more at 1300-1400 calories. I like the cushion that exercise gives me, I couldn't imagine having to be extremely strict about 1200 a day--I'd be way too hungry! I've hit a point in my keto journey where I find it's too easy to overconsume some fatty foods which are more calorie dense, so I have to be more strategic/careful than before with which fats (e.g. reducing dairy and nuts). I'm back to relying a lot on hard boiled eggs and avocado.

curvynotlumpy thank you so much for getting this thread started again.

jazzfan22 sounds like you have a solid plan in place to keep up with your weight loss despite your back injury. I can understand how you want to lift weights again, it’s my favourite type of exercise and I find it really challenges the body. Just keep being patient and listen to your body, you’ll know when you’re ready.

Our big store opening was a success yesterday, we received lots of great compliments from customers, I’m really proud of all of our employees. Glad it’s over though as this 14-hour shift spent mostly on my feet and roughly 28 000 steps/17km walked according to my Apple watch took a toll on me. I could barely get up this morning. Thankfully I have two days off to recuperate.

My goal this month is to simply get back on track and find the energy I need to get back into fitness. Hope everyone will have a successfull month of August!

A big thank you to Curvy for getting this month's thread up and running I think you absolutely hit the nail on the head with the split-attitude toward the end of summer month.

Jazzfan22: Glad to hear your weigh-ins stayed consistent despite not exercising as much as you did prior to injuring your back. Great news that your back is almost back to normal and you feel comfortable resuming your cardio routine

Martine: I'm so happy for you and all of your employees/coworkers at the new store. It sounds like all of your hard work really paid off. And how wonderful to receive so many compliments from customers! That had to feel nice Wow! 28k steps is a lot!! Make sure you take care of yourself and I hope you enjoy your two days off of recuperation

August’s goals will continue the theme of 4L of water per day, 20-25g net carb per day, 1 hour of activity most days of the week. My weight goal is about 6 lbs- a little less than my monthly trend the last few months because I will be on vacation for a few days the end of this month (during which I will keep that I maintain whatever loss I may have for the month at that time ) Plus, this month’s goal will put me just past the line into a new decade--a decade I have not seen since my first two years of college

Good luck everyone, may we all reach our goals this month

Thanks for getting the thread going for us, Curvy!

I just barely broke even and through to show a small loss last month due to that large vacation gain, so I'm hoping I will be successful in hitting my goal in August. That being said, I'm going to focus on my next mini goal right now, since it is only 6.8 lbs away -- hitting 162 lbs will put me right at the beginning of a "Normal" BMI for the first time in my adult life -- probably since the 2nd grade, honestly -- so I think it's a great goal to set for this round.

Here's to us all having a successful month this month...good luck, everyone!

Thank you Curvy for getting new thread up!! Good luck this month ladies!

I have finally gotten myself into the 290's but barely! Had a very active weekend and going to try having another active weekend again. Went for another walk during lunch which is getting easier but I have pains in my lower shin area on my right leg that basically makes it feel numb. I have no idea what this is or what it means but it hasn't gone away so probably something I should bring up with my doctor.

Casey: Hitting the healthy BMI range sounds like a wonderful goal Here’s hoping ToM is kind to us this month and the bloat goes away soon

E_boh312:Way to go making it into the 200’s!

I haven’t been able to figure out why I’ve been so tired the last couple of days and then today it hit me like a ton of bricks. ToM is just about here (today or tomorrow), which also explains my nice bump up on the scale today, despite being 100% on plan. I drank so much water yesterday, I actually made it past 5L (there was a lot of herbal tea involved ). Today I have to run some errands (bring some returns back) and catch up on laundry (it always manages to get away from me Have a great day everyone!

e_boh312: Hold your head high! Barely into a new decade is STILL into a new decade, right??!! Sending you that you remain there and your progress continues.

RunningRedHead: TOM has a way of messing with heads and progress. I sympathize as I am also experiencing all the symptoms of TOM but am at the age where I have irregular cycles. My body regularly "surprises" me

opheliaphoenix: A normal BMI is certainly something to rejoice. What wonderful things you've done for your health and the enjoyment of your life! #soproudofyou

The week has really gotten away from me and I am . Remind me never to take vacation right before two retreats and orienting a new staff member . Yesterday our new Veterans Certifying Official started and it also happened to be the same day as the annual retreat I host for the areas I supervise. While it was a lot of work it also provided a solid introduction to the work our respective centers do. In some ways it was its own type of orientation. Today was her first official day in the office so we met early this morning, got her computer access and mapped the drives to our unit folders and contents, toured our various spaces and then left her alone to settle in and do some online training. Eating has been hit or miss since I returned. I'm looking forward to the weekend as I have no commitments either Saturday or Sunday.

Wishing everyone a good evening.

Martine, on your big store opening! I'm so happy that it was such a success. It's good when you arrive at the end of a formidable task with many moving pieces and can finally appreciate the outcome of long days and nights with little rest. I really can understand why you were chosen to establish the new store and get it off the ground. Enjoy your rest! Btw, 28,000 steps is amazing!

E_boh312: I hope so too! the water weight goes as quickly as it arrived.

Curvy: It always messes with me mentally, and each time I don’t put the pieces together until after the first day- you’d think I’d have learned by now lol. I hear you on the irregularity- my old normal was actually very irregular (always had emergency shark week supplies on hand just in case, in my purse, in my car, etc) and since starting my new way of eating, my hormones are better regulated I think, leading to more consistent cycles. to the eye rolling smilie in response to your body’s “surprises.” It sounds like you’ve had quite the busy week getting back and at it after your vacation. I hope you are able to find some rest and relaxation during this weekend

I’ve been a sloth the last few days. This month’s thread title is really hitting home with me today regarding the “malaise;” I’ve felt lethargic all week and today is the first day that I’ve felt like I had enough energy to really get something small done (like the errands and laundry I meant to do yesterday). Dinner tonight will be peppers stuffed with tuna salad, topped with a slice of cheese and baked. The weather here has been dreary all day and I’ve been craving a tuna melt, so I hope that this concoction will be as satisfying as I think it will be. Today’s eating has been back to normal after the last few days of feeling absolutely out-of-control ravenous. Even with the hunger-monster the last couple of days, I still managed to stay on plan so I’m sure the gain is water/TOM related.

and happy Friday!

Today has been quiet which I appreciate. I'm currently charging my new Fitbit Alta HR and am excited to try it out. I've been without my Fitbit for nearly a month and have been tracking my mileage other ways. It will be nice to get back to having more accurate mileage and steps. Other than this my plan for this weekend includes the local farmer's market and putting my new Marie Kondo organizing skills into action on my closet and drawers . I'll keep you posted .

I hope everyone has a great start to their weekend!

RunningRedHead: Your post made me . Up until about a year ago my cycles were clockwork just like yours. I also had supplies everywhere. I can't tell you how many times colleagues discreetly came to me with their students whose TOM unexpectedly arrived and needed supplies. They know I have an assortment. When I was at my lowest weight and healthiest I certainly felt better when TOM arrived and I think it was due to the hormones adjusting. Even though I'm older now I do believe I would feel better if my diet and exercise were on track. As for your stuffed, baked peppers...

curvy-I have a fitbit versa and I love it! I've always liked fitbit products.

Well it sounds like all you ladies had the same week as I did! Work super busy and sometimes I get so caught up I forget to eat until I'm angry I got out to walk on one of the days and came back sweaty and totally not into it. The heat is just disgusting. Buuuut I'm still in the 290's so yay. Hopefully we all have a better week next week.

Good morning

I just returned from the Farmer's Market where I purchased some Honey nectarines, fresh eggs, spring mix and baby carrots. I have plans for salad lunches this week so I'm in prep mode. I'm not a huge carrot in salad fan so I'll use those for something else.

e_boh312: I'm loving the Alta HR so far! So much data at the tap of a finger. When I had my Zip I had to actually log into the app to see all the details of my day so this is big step forward. Even though I'm a regular watch wearer the bracelet has been an adjustment. I second your love for fitbit products. The day after I purchased my new one, fitbit had a sale and it was marked down by $50.00 . I immediately called and they pulled up my order, created a ticket for me and asked me to call when I received my product so they could apply the discount. I called them yesterday and true to their word they applied it and I received a refund of $54.11 when they factored in tax. fitbit!
