Well...I don't think we want to do that! Seriously, I think a big factor for most of us is a combination of motivation and tools.
First, the motivation to lose weight has to be there. Of course, I know that there were times I would have said I was motivated to lose weight...but I didn't. I ate and didn't lose weight. At some point, I realized that I had competing motivations. Yes, I wanted to be thin. But, I also wanted to eat X, to have fun, etc. And, at times, that desire to eat whatever was stronger than the competing motivation to be thin. I didn't really lose weight long term until losing weight became more important to me than the desire to eat fun stuff.
Then, once I had the motivation tools to help me lose weight helped a lot, such as Weight Watchers. But, that motivation had to be there first.
