Food Dehydrators

  • Does anyone here own one? do you like it? what do you make with it? points?

My SIL got me one for Christmas and I haven't used it yet. I read a post about banana chips and Kelly_S asked if they were homemade and I remember that I had a dehydrator in the basement.

    Thanks for the input!

  • I used to have a dehydrator; I just donated it to Goodwill because I never used it. However, I did try to make banana chips once. They didn't come out anything like the store boughts ones; then I found out that the ones from the store are fried in oil!! (That's what makes them crisp.) Mine came out sort of chewy and not very good.
  • I have had one for years. I sometimes get the urge to go on a dehydrating spree and its great. My husband is a hunter...and I like to make venison jerky.

Another one of my EASY favorites is kiwi fruit. One kiwi is a point....you just peel them and slice them.....and I make about 7 slices per kiwi....so seven pieces (or however many slicese you get on average for one kiwi would be a point. then you just dehydrate them....they are very unappealing to look at....but I love the taste...kind of tart. that to me is the easiest fruit to do. I too have had unsuccessful results with banana chips..... grapes do well....they make plumper bigger raisons that what you buy in the store. I have also had good luck with tomatos.....you know how expensive sun dried tomatoes are in the store...well, summer is coming on....so if you have extra just slice a few and and try to dehydrate them.....super easy.
    Hope this helps.......
  • i dried zucchini last summer. lots of zucchini. i never want to see another zucchini again.

tomatoes are good too. they get sweet when dried. or bell peppers. the veggies can be used in soups and stuff in the fall. cauliflower looks wierd.

watermelon makes a mess; don't even try it.
