Well, this morning I kept my promise to a new acquaintance and showed up at the gym to try my luck with the stationary bike. I didn't even last a minute on the upright bike so I changed to a recumbant bike. I had planned on 10 minutes and I made it easily but didn't want to overdo it my first time. I will go back on Wednesday morning and do it for a wee bit longer. I sure did enjoy my swim after though.
It was a busy weekend with lots of temptations, first at nieces wedding but I managed to stay OP, then here at home when I served a nice dinner to several of Peter's relatives but I had made two WW desserts and everybody seemed to like them. I also made the Oriental Green Bean recipe I got last week at WW and it really went over big time. Our nephew said he usually didn't like green beans but he really liked these ones.
Congratulations on the 6 lb loss Meanery. That's fantastic.

Here's my menu for today.

Pre-swim
1 slice fiber toast
1 tbsp light cream cheese
1/2 tsp jam
After swim
1/2 bagel
1 tbsp light cream cheese

Lunch
M&M Lasagna
raw veggies and n.f. dip
1 slice white bread

Snack
Orange

Dinner
(leftovers from Sunday's company dinner)
Braised pork in onion/beer gravy (not much gravy)
1/2 cup scalloped potatoes
oriental green beans
tomato salad
slice of WW strawberry pie with fresh strawberries on the side

Hi ladies!

Well, the weekend got away from me without getting caught up on posting. I wrote this at work with the good intention of posting last night. However, I got great news at work and convinced DH that we were going out for a special dinner. After 14 years of hard work and perseverence at one company, I finally am getting promoted to a Director in our accounting department. This is a big deal as there have only been two others in 25 years that have come up from the entry level Accountant to Director. All of us WOMEN!! Its a big pay increase and a big increase in responsibility. So last night was not about WW. We went to a local marina restaurant and had hot crab dip on pita wedges, smokey clam chower, fried lobster and the best bread pudding I've ever had. It was a wonderful evening with DH.

Alas, today is back OP.

Saturday, I had a great time shopping for clothes. I didn’t find much that was 50% off (false advertising if you ask me) but I did find clothes I needed for work. This was the first shopping trip in a long time where I picked up clothes in what I think is my size and didn’t have one item that was too small. Even sweater-type tops looked good. The blasted scale isn’t giving me any success but I look and feel different. I do know I’m retaining water still from TOM and last week’s humidity. I never drink enough water over the weekend.

Sunday, I vacuumed dusted and other housework to keep moving. I spent two hours working on my backyard landscaping. Most of it was me practically standing on my head trying to get my stones in place and level. I think I have about 50 in place—only 100 to go!! My muscles today are telling me about it too! The dogs were driving me crazy with all the rain and them thinking they don’t get enough attention. I made Bear go for our two mile walk Sunday evening. The sun came out and there was just a hint of a cool breeze so it felt fabulous. Then to kill myself off totally, I did 15 mins on the spinner. After that, I laid down on the bed to watch HBO.

I read an interesting article in Oprah magazine last week. It was about the personal trainer who whipped Diane Sawyer into better shape. She lost 25 lbs. I thought I’d share it as motivation for the strength building exercises. According to the article, building muscles boosts your metabolism more than cardio exercises. To quote the trainer, “If you build 5 pounds of muscles, it will burn the equivalent of more than 26 pounds of fat each year.” So, don’t feel frustrated if you can’t walk the miles or bike ride or swim or do tae bo until the cow’s come home. Pick up the weights or get some resistance bands and start with muscle building. Particularly if you’re over 40 and hit that “over 40 and can’t lose weight” stage. Food for thought.

I’ve got our menu planned for the week

Breakfast – waffles & yogurt to go or toast and peanut butter to go; milk
Lunch – frozen dinner, fruit or leftovers and fruit

(Planned before going out so something will shift a day later)
Monday dinner – lean grilled pork chops, beets, cottage cheese
Tuesday dinner – carmelized garlic chicken, pasta with herbs, salad
Wednesday dinner – grilled scallops (thanks J-Ann!), rice, broccoli or asparagus
Thursday – grilled hamburger patty, oven fries, green beans
Friday – gumbo or jambalaya (lean recipe to be determined)

I’ve got activities planned too – mowing & weedeating the lawn; starting the finishing process on a futon frame; dog walking, 30 mins on the spinner, and morning strengthening exercises.

Catching up –

Bunny – You’re still in our prayers. I hope your mom is recovering and that you are taking care of yourself too. Come back to us when you can!! The Teva sandals are working out pretty good. I wear them around the house and when doing yardwork. It seems to be helping the feet.

Stasia – How is your SIL? You’re also in our prayers.

Linda – Are you still flying high from your 20 lb achievement??!!! Good for you for keeping your promise and trying the other exercise equipment. Ten minutes is great and if you keep at it, you'll be thrilled with how fast you'll be adding time---and burning extra calories. Keep it up!

Meanerney – How was your weigh-in? Good job on making six days OP. Its so hard to keep them all OP. I usually manage five out of seven. Good luck!

Joyce – Not worrying is the best course of action. Don't take the first thing if you are not really happy with the working conditions. Good luck! I’ll have to look for the Leslie Sansone tapes. I’ve wanted those but did not want to buy the other stuff (or pay the money!). Hooray for yardwork!! Burn those points!

Donna – I’ve always wondered who does the captioning on TV shows. Now I know. I love that pumpkin fluff recipe. Good luck with your audition. How did you get into doing this for a living?

Dana - Welcome to the group!!

I think that catches me up. If I missed anyone, please accept my apologies.

LindaBC 04-23-2002 09:22 PM

WOW, Terri, CONGRATULATIONS ON THE PROMOTION!! It sounds like you really deserve it too. Good for you, girl.

Thanks for all your inspiring comments. I agree about the muscles burning calories faster. I have the weights. Now tell me to start working out with them!!:?: Still, I have noticed more muscles in various parts of my body just from doing my pool exercises.
Tomorrow I've promised to go back to the gym for another 10 minutes on the recumbant bike. I hope to work up to 30 minutes and then I'll get brave and start trying some of the other machines. It's obvious that just dieting doesn't do the trick, especially after 50.

Tonight I'll be glued to the TV for game 4 in the Detroit/Vancouver Stanley Cup play-offs. Go Canucks!

Today's menu is pretty basic.

First day under my belt

Happy to say that today is done! Today was my first day back op. It was kind of tough. Big adjustments. One day at a time is what I tell myself :)
Do most of you stick with the "old" points program or the new one? I used to be allowed to have up to 33 points but now I can only have 31.. it's tough! It's weird when you are shorter.. I am only 5' 0", weigh 235... but if I was, say 5'4" tall I would probably weigh 250lb (based on my past - yesterday's - eating habits) My point is.... Can't short people get more points??? LOL

anyhow.. here is what I had today.. if you any advice.. fill me in. I'm not THAT hungry right now.. but I am dying to eat something!!

breakfast
orange
toast w/ honey butter
3 pts

snack
pretzels 2 pts

lunch
ww meal
apple
couple of bites of my dh's homemade mac n' cheese - man, this stuff is good - I shouldn't have made it. I counted it as 2 pts
8pts

snack
popcorn 2 pts (what kind of popcorn do you all eat?/recommend?)

supper
pork chops
salad
potatoe
11 pts

snacks (can you tell I like my snacks?)
skinny cow
salsa and chips
6pts

total 32 points
I forget how you count exercise - but I did go for a walk and 5 min on tread mill (I swear i almost had a stroke!:o )

had all my water and fruits/veggies

no milk :nono:

biggest change: no regular soda today!!!;)

Thanks for listening to be babble!

I hope you all had a great day... in every way

Dana

slutbunny 04-24-2002 01:26 PM

Today's menus:

Breakfast: Cheerios, skim milk
Lunch: Subway Roast Beef Sub with lettuce only, WOW Nacho Chips, Diet Coke
Snack: 2 pt Ice Cream Sandwich, air popped popcorn
Dinner: Pressed cheese sandwiches, fruit salad

I'm soooo not a veggie person!

My mom got home from the hospital today. On Friday we leave for a weekend in Delaware. I'm gonna be soooo wasted by the time that our traveling is finally over at the end of May! LOL!

No time for more, but I'm reading and appreciate all the support - both diet and personal.

Checking In!

Hey, all:wave:

Just a couple of minutes to check in with you.

Dana, Welcome and congratulations for staying OP! It's always one day, sometimes one meal, at a time! I suggest you eat everything on your program including milk -- I like fat free low fat yogurt mixed with salsa as a dip for celery -- to help you with cravings. BTW air popped popcorn is definately the way to go for a filling snack.

Terri, CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :hb: (this is a celebratory fat free cake;) on your BIG PROMOTION! You deserved to have a wonderful dinner out, no question! How does it feel to be so successful:cool: ?

Linda, Staying OP and making your committment at the gym is FANTASTIC! Ten minutes on the machine is ten minutes more fat-burning muscle tissue:D ! It's not the length of time, it's taking the time to do it! I'm getting inspired by you and Joyce W., too.

Joyce W., Way to go staying OP and walking!

Hope you all have a lovely OP day!

Mel

LindaBC 04-24-2002 08:57 PM

Dana, good for you staying OP. The first few days are the hardest. Make sure you have lots of stuff you CAN eat in the house so you're not tempted to snack on stuff you shouldn't have. One of the smartest things you did was lay off the soda. Even diet soda can cause carb cravings, y'know?
Bunny good news about your Mom. Hope you have a good time on your trip. Veggies aren't my favorite food either, but I'm amazed at how they help me stay OP. For example, I've been trying to finish off a large platter of mixed raw veggies that I'd put together for our guests on Sunday. I've been having a cup or so of them with my lunch every day this week and they've really helped me feel full quicker than if I just had my usual sandwich. I mix a couple of tablespoons of Hellman's Ultra Low Fat Mayo with some salsa and use that for a dip.
When I fill my plate at dinner time, I make sure to fill at least 1/3 or more of my plate with low carb veggies. Tonight it will be leftover oriental green beans (still from Sunday)and mushrooms. Then, I force myself to eat half of these veggies before I have even one mouthful of meat or starchy food. Lately, I've been pushing my plate away before finishing every scrap so something is working with this method.
I'm really feeling wiped this afternoon. This morning I went to the gym before my swim and did 12 minutes on the recumbant bike. I wasn't tired and was just starting to sweat but my legs and feet were really aching. It felt good to get in the pool and do my water exercises instead. Stayed in the pool for an hour and then the whirlpool for a few minutes which felt good.
Had some errands to run after that and then, after lunch, I worked in my garden for two hours. Man, my knees were starting to wobble by the time I came in but I got a few yards of the front border weeded and it sure needs it.
I fell asleep while Y&R was on and woke to the Oprah show and darned if she didn't have a woman on who is the mother of a local teen who killed herself because she was being bullied terribly by other girls in school. Such a sad story. I knew all about it so I turned it off and came to visit you folks instead.

Today's Menu (not written in stone)
Breakfast
2 slices hi fiber toast
1 tsp light Becel margarine
2 tbsp light Philly chees
1 tsp jam
orange

Lunch
raw veggies and non-fat dip
2 slices hi fiber bread
tuna salad

Snack
1/2 cup lo-fat yogurt

Dinner (planned)

Broiled fish
Green beans
Scalloped potatoes
mushrooms & tomatoes

yogurt & fruit

By the way, Dana, I'm on the new points program and because I weigh over 275 lb. I can have 29 to 34 points each day.
It's nice when you exercise enough to either eat more or bank points.

Charbar 04-24-2002 09:58 PM

thanks for the support

:smug: love that show!

I plan to paint my dd's room sometime soon - so doing the research and actually doing it will keep me busy. I am a Sahm (stay at home mom) to a "you're driving me crazy, but I love you" two year old. Click on my "homepage" if you want to see pictures.

Have wonderful evening

Can I join in?

I just started WW today!!! Today is my first day with the points, and I used them all. LOL!!!!!

Breakfast- I didn't have any (wasn't hungry)

Lunch- Pria bar 2 points
2 FF hotdogs with ketchup and mustard 2 points
2 hot dog buns - 6 points!!!! Ack!!!
45 pretzel sticks 2 points
Water

Snack at work- Bag of popcorn 5 points :^:

Dinner- Footlong turkey sub with FF cheese and FF mayo- 13 points
Veggie delight salad w/ FF ranch dressing 1 point
water

Bedtime snack- 1/2 cup Cheerios with splenda and 1/2 cup milk 2 points
1 1/2 cup skim milk 3

I think that's right point wise- 36 on the dot.

THere are a lot of things on here that I didn't realize were so terrible- the biggest offenders are the hot dog buns!!! I'd rather use 1 point bread instead of 3 point buns!!!!! :p I couldn't believe that.

But, an OP first day!!!

Joyce 04-25-2002 04:41 AM

GOOD MORNING BUDDIES!

This has been a very busy week for us. I'm still putting job applications in. We had a claims adjuster come out to look at the damage that the hail did to our roof in March. We've had no rain lately so I'm having to water the garden. (Gotta keep them veggies growing. ) We made fish deliveries this weekend to 2 pet shops. I've tried to plan meals so that I can eat on the run and stay OP. I had bought a turkey last December when they were on sale and we cooked it yesterday. Between DH and me it should take all week. (Just kidding!) I'll probably freeze some of it.

Freedom & Light welcome to our group. This really is a great place to be. Way to go on with stayin OP today! :)

Dana - Glad to hear from you again. I 'm much older but I'll never forget what SAHM is like. My daughter used keep me very busy. She's now 21 but still needs Mom every now and then.;) I would love to see pictures but did not see the li nk to the pictures? I am using the new points system. But I've done both. From what I've read from all the boards is that it's more or less a personal decision. You will lose your weight either way. I'm 5'3" (240 lbs.) so I'm a shorty too. The points confused me at first because I was used to the doctors (calorie/exchange) diet that figured you had to eat less if you were shorter. Hmmm WW works and is much easier than that so I'm going to stick with it.

Linda - Congrats on staying OP during all the tempting festivities. Great going at the gym. Way to go girl!. I know what you mean about the garden. I went out yesterday to hoe weeds and did not realize how much I had neglected the garden. We also have mesquitos sooo bad this year. I have to spray myself down to do any outside work. We have not got any rain in several weeks now and I need to water.

Mel - Sounds like your having a great week! I'm so proud of your success so far. It seem like I have to struggle everyday just to stay OP. But the end result will be worth it. I hope you have a great week. :)

[COLOR=tomato]SlutBunny - I am so glad your Mom is on her way to recovery. I know from personal experience how stressful hospital and traveling can be. I hope you have a good week and take care of yourself! [COLOR]

Determined - CONGRATS ON YOUR PROMOTION! It must feel great to finally be rewarded for a job well done. Way to go on all that yard work. I know from experience it is not easy. COUNT YOUR EXERCISE POINTS! I did not read the article that you mentioned but I have book by Miriam Nelson called Strong Women Stay Slim that outlines an aerobic and strength training schedule. I feel that strength training is very important and helps our weight loss. Muscles burn more calories. I hope you have a great week :D

I hope everyone has a great OP day! Boy howdy! I came to this thread just about every couple of hours this weekend and nothing was happening then in one day BOOM!!! I'm left in the dust again. :dizzy: Way to go buddies. :) I look forward to hearing how your weeks' going.

Have a good one.
Joyce

slutbunny 04-25-2002 08:44 AM

Good morning, ladies!

Joyce -- The turkey has me drooling! Its the time of year here where I try to keep away from the oven and stove for cooking because the house just retains the heat (and we don't have AC and the windows in the kitchen are just impossible to open because of their location) so I'm terribly jealous. Our turkey, until October or so, will be the sliced-from-the-deli variety. I have been trying to make sandwiches a couple times a week with fruit salad as a side item. Its the perfect low point summer meal, imo.

Freedom&LIght -- I fought and whined and hated my first week on WW -- so I'm thinking you are off on a better foot than I ever was! BRAVO for you! I agree on the bread vs buns issue -- we switched to high fiber, low cal breads as soon as I started watching what was in everything we eat.

Slimdown -- I work at home, but I've always considered myself a SAHM. My kids have been at home or at university with me for all their lives (they're 14 and 11). We homeschool in addition to working at home - and the you're driving me crazy, but I love you phase never seems to end. On the plus side, I really do enjoy watching my girls become their own women. On the points program: I don't know what program I use. I use whatever was being handed out when I joined last autumn. :D I didn't really realize there were difference, ya know?

Linda -- I do need to buy a veggie platter. Its the prep that keeps me from eating the crunchy veggies -- all that scrubbing and chopping. If I had them just laid out platter-wise or in baggies all clean and cut to begin with I'd at least eat more carrots and celery. I tried desperately to learn to like broccoli a few years back (serving it weekly, eating it every single time) but finally decided since I hated it (how it tastes, how it feels) it was time to stop. I've done similar if-I-eat-it-often-enough-I'll-grow-to-like-it campaigns with squash, cauliflower, tomatoes (UGH), spinach (okay raw), lima beans, green beans (okay raw) and more. My final "truly like it" list of veggies is short: corn, potatoes, celery, carrots, lettuce... sigh... PLUS it makes me all inspired (and a little guilty 'cause I'm not doing as much as I should) to read about you trying the bikes at the gym! Way to go!! That's how I found that I love the elliptical trainer -- just trying new things and sticking through the first "this is weird maybe I don't like it" phase.

Terri -- Congrats on the promotion! Sounds challenging -- which is just how work, imo, should be! Your life just seems to get busier and busier every day. :) Thanks for the update on the Teva sandals. I'll put them on my short list of sandals to look for next month when I begin buying our hiking supplies -- I can't wait to get back out in the mountains again!

J-Ann -- Wheredya go? You started the thread and then *poof* you were gone...

Meanerney -- When I read your tip about fat free yogurt with salsa my first though was, "What flavour yogurt is she usng so that tastes anything but repulsive??!!" I figured out this morning that you must mean the unflavoured kind. :o Whoops!

Okay -- so I probably missed someone. I'm truly sorry if I did.
:(

Today is a busy, busy day. We finish packing for our trip to Delaware. Have to ship late this afternoon so we get as much out the door as we can before leaving town (business has picked up so much that we're guaranteed to have a TON of orders waiting to be shipped when we return on Tuesday). I need to print out a map (thank God for MapQuest), buy supplies (lots o' Diet Coke -- I'm still tired from our last trip and the caffiene is likely to be what keeps me on the road) and put the back seat back in the van (maybe. If its in, we can all fit in our van which works out because I think my father-in-law is dangerous when he drives so I don't want my kids riding with him. On the other hand, we can fit more comfortably in the van for traveling with out the seat -- the jury is still out on this one).

See y'all Tuesday (if not before)!!

j-ann 04-25-2002 03:38 PM

Hi Everybody

I'm still here just been really busy and now I'm getting ready or my road trip to Missouri. I sure hope I can fit all the stuff I want to take into the CRV. :) I've got plans to pack all my breakfast and lunches, and snacks so I should do ok weight wise.

Hey Terri, On Wed. & Thurs. of next week I'll be at Purina Farms in Grays' Summit. Just west of Eureka and St. Louis. I'll be attending the Amer. Pointer Club's National Specialty dog show so I'm dragging the "Princess Pointer" along for the ride. If you happen over that way just look for a short, heavy woman (5'2, 50+ yrs.) with short frosted brown hair. (or ask for Judy Wright, the real J-ann.) If you do come over wear old clothes that dog hair won't hurt.

It's great to see so many new faces and everyone seems to be doing splendidly. I'm not going to try to go back and do individual notes but I'm proud to see everyone so "UP" in spirits. HURRAY FOR US ALL!!! :jig:

I'll try to get back to the list on Sat., if not I'll be back on May 5 or 6.
I missed my WI but I think I'm down about 3 lbs.!

Freedom&Light 04-25-2002 03:45 PM

Thanks for all of the welcomes!!!!

Today has been pretty good too. :D

Question- what brand of bread do you use? I can only find 1 g of fiber/slice bread....and I'm sure there's some more out there. ;)

Freedom&Light 04-25-2002 08:16 PM

Ooh! I did it! I resisted the M&Ms!!!!! LOL!!!!!!

If I had them, I would have had almost nothing for dinner....but I resisted!! Whoo hoo!!!!

Yea me! :jig:

ladynredd 04-26-2002 06:47 AM

Checkin' In

Just a short note -- Friday is the day I have an 8:30 class to cover -- instead of my normal 10:00 -- so I have less time for the 'puter than usual.

First off, Freedom & Light, GREAT JOB on resisting those M&M's! They remind me of the old ad slogan about "nobody can eat just one!" They're one of those foods I absolutely must stay away from -- once I start eating them I keep eating them until they are ALL gone.

Before I forget, Terri, you asked how I got into this business. Well, first I was a court reporter for 25+ years :dizzy: working mostly in a courtroom setting. I've done somewhere around 100 c apital murder trials and was really burning out (can't imagine why! I was living in NC at the time and met another court reporter in an online quilt guild who lived in Ohio. We became friends over the phone and, since my kids were in CA and she knew I was lonely over the holidays, invited me to spend Thanksgiving with her and her family. I flew up, spent about 10 days with them, saw the sights, kinda got a feel for the town, and told her if she could find me a new husband or a new job, I'd move! She called me about 9 months later and put me in touch with one of the people I work for now. We talked and she hired me over the phone!

Got a phone call last night from my ex-husband to tell me my youngest son has totalled his car. He fell asleep at the wheel and hit one of those railroad signals -- ya know, the things with the arms? He was wearing his seat belt and as a result only has 9 staples in his head (scar will eventually be hidden by his hair), a broken bone on the back of one hand, and a few cuts on his forehead that didn't require stitches. No drugs or alcohol involved, thank God -- and with this child that could have been a definite possibility a couple of years ago. He seems to have straightened out now, though, for which I am VERY grateful. :jig:

I'm feeling very grateful but not upset; this attitude is easier to maintain because of the distance. It would be harder if I could actually see him cut/bruised, bloody clothing, etc. He seemed to be a very safe driver when he visited me at Xmas; much more so than his father was at that age, who totalled three cars of his dad's until owning an old clunker of a pick-up finally broke him of the habit of driving too fast ... So my "baby" was not seriously hurt, no one else was hurt, and maybe the hassle of dealing with insurance and trying to get to college w/ no car will make him think seriously about the wisdom of driving when you're sleepy ...

Eeek! Gotta run!
Donna

first week & sick

Caught a cold yesterday - feeling crapola today - so is dd... which means dh is around the corner.. he is the worst! hehe

Some one asked about bread. I highly recommend Natural Ovens. They have a web site with all their calories and such. www.naturalovens.com They are high in fiber.. very filling. 1/2 pt per slice. They also sell cookies - to die for, bagels, rolls and more. They are local here in Wisconsin (about an hour from here) so all the groceries stores carry it. You can buy their stuff online. Pricey - but well worth it!

Since I am under the weather I have decided to take a day off from counting points. I know, I know, it's only my 4 th day. Infact - I've just had a 3 point breakfast this morning. I am just going to drink lots of water and eat lots of fruit.

Here is what I had yesterday.. don't have a clue about today yet :(

hot chocolate 1 pt
fried egg sandwich 3
apple 1

ww meal
half of dd's drumstick 2 pts - must stop eating her food!!!

2 skinny cows! :o 4 pts

14 points worth of dominos thin crust pizza!

31 points total :)

I think I need to make some WW soup - I don't like veggies that much - I will adapt to my liking.

Have a great weekend all!!

Dana

Week Two Weigh In

Good morning, friends!:)

Good news to report! I had my week 2 WI and lost 5 pounds!:D :D That makes a 2 week total of 11:smug: :D :smug: I must say, the struggle to say OP last week was well worth it! Now, I can start all over again with 14 personal choices and 700 optional calories (my life savers!) Not much exercise though I did go out and walk the dogs once this week, also worked a little in the garden. We've been hot and just a couple of days with no rain wilts the seedlings and transplants.

Joyce, What veggies do you grow in your garden? We have a very small fenced yard, so not enough sun for veggies. I do love gardening, though, and am always trying new shade plants.

WELCOME, Freedom and Light! Can I call you F&L? Congratulations! This group is a wonderful place for encouragement, ideas and support. I always eat ALL my program food and it still works!:smug: You can do it!

LindaBC, I agree with you about adding veggies to every meal. It helps so much -- filling you up and relieving the need to "eat" (whether you are hungry or not!).

Donna, I'll keep your son in my prayers. What a terrible accident, but thank goodness it wasn't worse than it is.

Slimdown, Welcome, welcome! This is a wonderful place to come for support to stay OP.

Bunny, Have a good trip to Deleware!

J-Ann, Good to hear from you. I  dogs! Do you just have one show dog? I have a corgi mix and a terrier mix. I'd love to get Charlie (corgi) in some sort of agility trials.

Hope I didn't miss anybody. Have a lovely spring OP weekend!

Meanerney:What does that mean? I neeeeeeeed them too!

Congrats on your weight lose.. that is AMAZING!!!! You go girl!
What does 14 personal choices mean?

btw.. I did end up counting points yesterday.. turned out to be a good day :) I now have 10 banked points this week so far:))

700 Calories

Hi Dana,

Snow in April? Wow! It's already in the high 80's here!

I'm on the old "Personal Choice" plan that gives you daily: 4 proteins, 5 breads, 2 fats, 3 fruits, 2 milks, and 3+ veggies. In addition you get 14 personal choices (any daily catagory) plus 700 optional calories (anything) during the week. I  my optional calories and use it for cravings like WOW potatoe chips, chocolate, etc. I'm not going to meetings, just got the (older) plan from a book at the library.

The points system lets you eat whatever you want, but somehow I don't think you get as much food!;) My motto is "I'm not greedy, I just like a lot":joker:

Stay OP, you can do it!

Mel

Charbar 04-27-2002 12:07 PM

hehe.. here I was thinking I got 700 extra calories if I made it to my second week.... in my dreams!

j-ann 04-27-2002 07:53 PM

Hi Ladies,

Car's all packed and I'm ready to hit the road first thing tomorrow. I'm taking turkey and Tuna and pickles for lunches and some yogurt andd WW allowable snacks. I AM going to stay OP all the while I'm away.

Driving alone will be the pits but I've got several books on tape to keep me company.

DANA: I don't remember if I've met you so here's my "Hello" We got 2" of the white stuff yesterday AM but it's gone now.

FREEDOM & LIGHT: WELCOME to you too. You'll enjoy it here. Hope you're feeling better.

MEANERNEY ...MEL: Remind me when I get back and I'll find the websites for groups that offer agility to all breeds (pure and mixed). It's a ball and good exercise for you as well as the dog.

Well, just remembered I have to water plants before it get's dark.

SEE YOU ALL IN ABOUT A WEEK!

Freedom&Light 04-28-2002 09:08 PM

Blew it tonight

Well, I really blew it tonight. I am having a stressful night from heck, and I respond by going to a Chinese place for dinner and having- approximately- a 31 point dinner. :( I can't believe I did this. I'm not coping well with stress, and I shouldn't have had so much to eat...but I did it anyway!!!!

*sob*

I feel terrible!!!! My total for today- if I don't eat anything else tonight- is around 48-50 points. I'm not sure, to tell the truth.

:(

Should I just count this as a free meal, not worry about it, and eat 0 point foods for the rest of the night? And then just start back over tomorrow? Or should I try to bank extra points to cover the food?

What would y'all do?

Charbar 04-28-2002 10:07 PM

hey. .what you did tonight is called life! It will happen again.. next time try something a little different. Eat half.. take the rest home. If you are still hungry.. then eat it. Odds are you won't be :)
Eat lots of water.. then move on!

This is only my first week. (I have had many first weeks at WW :o ) But compare yourself to how you ate BEFORE you started WW. If you are anything like me your 50 point day today is NOTHING compared to what your typical day used to be. I swear I bet there were 100 pt days in my past! If you look at the big picture you are doing amazing.

You did the right thing by trying to figure out the points... even if it wasn't perfect.. you knew you were accountable for what you are eating. And isn't that a big step! :)

Meanerney 04-29-2002 02:00 PM

Hello, Friends:wave:

Freedom&Light, It's ok, don't panic and don't beat yourself up. Take one meal at a time, and when you choose to go "off program", just get right back on the next meal.

I agree with Dana that you did the right thing counting your points. When I blow it, I go ahead and write it all down and then eat whatever I can for the rest of the day. If all my other choices are gone, I can always have veggies.:D It really, really helps if you have some "free" veggie dishes that you  to eat so you don't feel deprived. Then tomorrow is a new full points day!

J-Ann, I'll see if I can find some agility sites on-line while you're gone. I applaud you:angel: for planning ahead to stay OP during your trip.

Dana, Hope you are having a good OP week. My mini goal is 10% loss by the first day of summer too (challenge from another thread or forum). I'm a veteran WW too, but this is just the beginning of week three for me this time and I'm not going to meetings. Frankly, I've found more personal support on this site that I ever did at meetings!

My yesterday's menu:

2 lite bread + 2 diet cheese toasts = 2 breads, 1 protein

veggie, tofu stirfry with curried raisin yogurt sauce = 2 veg, 1 protein, 1 milk, 20 optional cals, 1 fruit

3 whole wheat tortillas with 2 turkey dogs and 4 cheese sticks burritoes = 3 bread, 2 protein, 3 personal choice

WOW chips = 100 optional cals
strawberries & yogurt = 1 fruit, 1 milk

Where are the rest of you? Hope everyone has a lovely OP week!

LindaBC 04-29-2002 09:10 PM

I'm here. It was a gorgeous weekend and I took full advantage of it to get our front yard in shape. Three sides of our front lawn have wide borders of shrubs and the weeds were really taking over. Yesterday I spent 5 hours out there bending to pull weeds. Finally got it all finished this morning. Whew. I really notice the difference in my flexibility and stamina with just 21 pounds gone since last summer.
This morning I went to the gym before my pool workout planning to spend 10 or more minutes on the recumbant bike but I only lasted 8-1/2 minutes. I guess I was just too darned tired from all the gardening. I did spend a full hour in the pool though and did a pretty good workout. None of my pals showed up so I didn't waste any time yacking.
Freedom&Light, we all blow it from time to time. For me, it's usually when I'm feeling anxious about something....or bored. It's best to keep busy. When you know you've gone waaaaay over your allowed points, it helps to drink extra water to flush it away faster, and try to do more exercise to work it off. Then, for the next couple of days, try to eat at the lower end of your points range and fill up with low carb veggies.
The main thing is you were accountable and I think that's one of the most important things we can learn from WW. In our old way of eating, once it was down the hatch, we would forget about it and then wonder why we'd packed on another 5 pounds. Writing down every bite makes you realise just how much you're scarffing down and you know the consequences.
Here's my menu for today.

Pre-Swim
1 pc fiber toast
3/4 oz light cheddar cheese

After Swim
2 pc fiber toast
3 slices crisp bacon
1 tsp light margarine
1 small orange

Lunch
2 pc fiber toast
2 tbsp light cream cheese
1 oz smoked salmon
raw veggies and low fat dip

Snack
Apple
Yogurt
Pretzels

Dinner (planned)
Beef Strogonoff made with light sour cream & mushrooms
Fettucini
Brocolli

Snack
2 point brownie
Light Cool Whip

Meanerney 04-30-2002 12:13 PM

YAHOO, Dana! You go girl! -3.6 is FANTASTIC! This is your fat free, points free, celebratory cake: :hb: Isn't it AMAZING and WONDERFUL to see the pounds disappear after a week's committment to program? I'm so happy for you! Can't weight (get it?:dizzy: ) to hear again next week.

Linda BC, I love to work in the garden too and hubbie just bought me a little garden bench on wheels that really helps me get around and get up after sitting (:o )! I hope to spend more time working outside now. You are really doing great with all the exercising and sticking it out with the recumbent bike. You are really maximizing the success of your 21 pound loss!

We had a county wide power outage for about six hours yesterday! Hope everyone was ok without tornado or hail problems.

Happy week, ladies!

Mel

Freedom&Light 04-30-2002 02:58 PM

Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It turns out that AF came like a vengence on Sunday night, which explains a lot...LOL.....

But thank you for all of your support. I stayed OP yesterday- even banked a couple! Today is looking better too.

Thanks again!!!!!

Dana- congrats on your loss!!!!! I'm just finishing my first week too (WI tomorrow) and I hope I lose as much as you did!! Good job!!!!!!!!!!!

Wishing everyone a wonderful Tuesday!!!!!!!!!

I LOST 6.5 pounds!!!!!!!!!!! Even with terrible Chinese night!!!!!!!!

WHOO HOO!!!!

Gold Stars for Freedom&Light!

Happy, happy weight loss to you, happy, happy weight loss to you, HAPPY 6.5 lb. weight LOSS, dear Freedom&Light, HAPPY WEIGHT LOSS to you, and many more!!! :D What a FANTASTIC week one result! Keep it up!:)

Where is everybody today?:?:

It's week 3 for me and I'm having a tough time staying OP. I lost weight the first two WI's and now I am choosing (it feels like I have no control in the matter, but I know that's not true) to really push the limits of the plan. I didn't fill out my food diary yesterday or today. I'll have to back track tonight and see what I've done.:p I've also started drinking diet soda again, instead of water or iced tea, and I'm sure that will adversely effect my loss this week too. Woe as me! Maybe not, I'm taking my dog to agility classes, first time, tonight and will be getting some regular exercise there. Should be fun too!

Hello, everybody else,, hope you have blue skies and sunshine today!

Mel

LindaBC 05-01-2002 10:14 PM

YIPPEEEE, Freedom&Light! WAY TO GO!!!

That's a fantastic first week loss. Gosh, I've been praying for a loss like that since I started WW last June but I don't think it's ever gonna happen.
HOWEVER, I DO think I should have a good loss this Friday. (Keeping fingers crossed). I have worked so hard in my garden and I've really worked hard in the swimming pool.
This morning I managed 12 minutes on the recumbant bike at the gym and then put in an active hour in the pool. Came home and had breakfast and then worked out in the garden (again) for three hours. All that bending and stretching has to be doing SOME good, dontcha think?
While I haven't stayed strictly OP I have stayed within my points range. I consider strictly OP to be getting in all the milk they recommend, all the veggies and fruit they recommend and all the water they recommend. Some days I'm a little short on the milk products but I've been good about the veggies and fruit. I also journal faithfully.
Mel, the doggy agility classes sound like fun. Wish I had a dog but DH is not a believer in having dogs in the house and I can't imagine having one any other way so we're at an impasse. Actually, we're not in a very good neighbourhood to have a dog anyhow as our yard isn't fenced and we're close to a major highway. Still, DH works such long hours, it would be nice to have a companion pup. Whenever I see a dog show on TV I have to watch. Just love watching those critters showing off and so eager to please their masters.
Don't worry about pushing the program to the limits. I think that's what we're supposed to do. Don't cheat yourself on food. But, it really, REALLY does help to journal. They used to say at WW "If you bite it, write it" and it's true. Part of the program is learning to be accountable for our actions and writing down every sinful bite is part of the learning process. Sometimes it's a pain and sometimes we want to lie but who the heck are we lying to anyhow? Just ourselves. Might as well be honest and learn from our mistakes.
Slimdown, congratulations on your weight loss. That's a great start.
I'd sure like to know where everybody else has disappeared to. I know J-ann is on a trip but where is Lilac Glitter and some of the others who were here when I started posting here? Did I chase them away?

ladynredd 05-02-2002 07:03 AM

still here!

Still here but I've been so busy that I haven't been writing to ANYBODY. Woke up to the sound of sirens this morning -- finally figured out, groggy as I was, that it must be a tornado warning! Turns out the funnel cloud was sighted quite a bit south of me but things were exciting for a few minutes while I tried to figure things out.

Submitted my audition tape of yesterday's Montel show -- my translation rate was 99.99% ... gee, teach, think that's good enough? (laughing) I'm pretty sure that will qualify me unless the camp has already filled up -- shouldn't have left it so long (deadline is tomorrow) but I was having mega problems with VCR and couldn't record and I'm always gone during the daytime shows (which tend to be slower than evening broadcasts.) But I need to record Regis, Montel, Oprah, etc., during the day and come home and practice every day. Can't BELIEVE after 25+ years of pounding on that machine I'm back to doing finger exercises and warming up :s:

Haven't been doing great with food, to be honest ... getting low on fruits and vegies and eating too many carbs as a result. Must go shopping and replenish. Will try to do that tonight after work ...
Donna

wow! what a weight lose! 6.5 lbs.. that is soooo amazing!!:D
I bet that made you feel really motivated for this week!

Things are going well around here.. just trying some different food combos.

The BIG new this week is that my little girl went pee pee on the potty!!!! Last night I went out and bought everything to do up the spare bath - which will be now hers. We did it all in fish! She was sooo excited. This is going to be a lot of work! But I am so looking forward to it when it's done.

visit my dd's home page to see my little cutie pie. www.digitalsara.com I am so proud of her :spin:

So who do you all think is going to get booted from Survivor tonight?

Quick Hello!

Hello, friends!

Just a quickie before I go pick up DH and the doggies for a trip to PetsMart.

LindaBC, I've got my fingers crossed for your WI tomorrow. With all your exercising and staying w/in points, I'm guessing you are going to be a happy camper! I do hope so. Big losses are so gratifying, but after this week (and going off program in a big way yesterday) I'm be thrilled if I lose any tomorrow and don't, gulp, gain. (Keep your fingers crossed for me too!) BTW, have you thought about a cat? We have two and they are lovely companions and easy to keep as indoor pets.

Donna, Congratulations on your audition tape! You can't get much better than that!!! Will you actually doing closed captioning for TV shows? Can you get me tickets to Oprah? Thank goodness the tornado passed you by! This weather has been freaky all over the country! We were up to 98 today!

Dana, My DH won't let me watch Survivor (he controls the remote!). I loved the first season. Thanks for the web site address, our little girl is adorable! You must be sooooooo proud of her. Her new bathroom sounds so cute. BTW, where are the photos of Mom?

Hello to everybody else too! We can make it happen!

Mel

Yes.. Sara is a cutie pie :)

I had my first "garden burger" tonight - not bad... 3 point burger (1 point bun) - very filling too. I cooked it on my NEW George Foreman Grill - I was so excited when I saw the UPS guy today :dizzy: Got to love amazon!

Donna.. fill me in on this whole Montel - audition tape.. feeling kind of blonde on the subject :o

Meanernery.. I will get a picture of Moi soon :) Best wishes on the WI.

chat more after survivor.. it's on now

captioning education

Ahem ... (clearing throat, assuming professorial stance)

Basically, the Montel audition tape is so I can quality to attend a three-day boot camp this summer to learn, hands-on, the nuts and bolts of broadcast captioning. There is additional software that is used (in additional to the regular court reporting software) that basically enables me to take my steno notes from a live broadcast and transmit them back to the company that would employ me. There they would be combiined with the television signal and beamed out for the world to see. My understanding is that I would receive it approximately 3-4 seconds before everyone else, and that I would be using phone lines as opposed to a satellite, but that's about as far as my understanding goes. That's why I need the boot camp!:o These folks are all very close-mouthed about the nitty-gritty information ... I wouldn't be surprised if I were asked to sign an agreement not to reveal certain proprietary information.

Technically this is called "open captioning." Closed captioning is when a tape has been produced WITHOUT captioning and we are asked to caption it after the fact and insert the captions onto the tape. I know some people who have done it and they say it's VERY dull work but it might keep me going during the summer ...

More than you wanted to know?
Donna
