Talking Is this normal?

Some of you will probably hate me for this, but i love you anyway.

i started doing WW at home on my own last Saturday (so this is my 6th day). i started at 211 lbs. Today i weighed in at 204! That's a 7 lb loss in less than a week! i'm not complaining or anything, but i thought you were supposed to lose 1-2 lbs per week. Why am i losing so fast? Is this just water weight? Am i just blessed? i've really not changed my diet too much. i'm just not snacking like i used to. i'm stumped but happy anyway Less than a week and i'm 1 lb away from my goal for September!

The first week-10 days usually yields the greatest drop in the scales on any diet plan. Sorry to break it to you, but it probably is mostly water weight, and your losses will likely slow to 1-2 pounds a week.

No one is exempt from the laws of thermodynamics.

Bummer, eh?

Yep, I remember the summer before highschool I weighed 225 lbs, and my first week, I lost 11 lbs. I've never hit that record again, but the first one to three weeks of a diet plan is always an ego booster (and such a bummer when the weight loss stabilizes and reality hits a couple weeks later)

Thanks for the info. i figured it was too good to last. i'll just enjoy it while i can. Now, every time i feel like indulging, i remind myself of my success so far and tell myself "don't you want that to continue?". It's usually enough to stop myself from caving.

i'm going to keep my goal at 2 lbs per week. Anything more than that will just be icing on the cake.

I lost 9.6 my first week on WW, then the next week I gained 3.5. It's mostly water, so beware, you may gain next week. Good Job though, you're on your way!

getting started is an accomplishment in itself, so Congrats! for that. Staying motivated is the next key. Using your accomplishments to keep going is great. Good luck, stick with it and you'll be successful!

I totally agree that it's probably water weight, but did anybody see Biggest Loser this week? One guy lost 30lbs! How the heck do the do that? THe big mystery about this show is that not only do they not gain it back, but the keep loosing week after week.

My doctor keeps telling me I'm doing it the best way (around 1 lb a week), but I'm just astounded becuase I didn't think it was possible to loose as much weight as these people do, as fast as they do and then keep it off (even after they go home and they're not exercising 12 hours a day any more).

Someone on another thread mentioned that they caught a couple of the contestants referring to the time between weigh-ins as more than one week, and then "correcting" themselves. I think one week of tv time, isn't necessarily one week of real time, so it may have been two or even three weeks between weigh-ins.

Even if so, the numbers are still unrealistic for the average dieter. Also, there has been some news articles referenced, that indicate that most of the contestants have not kept off the weight. One guy, gaining like 30 lbs or more in a weekend or something like that.

There is a lot of research that suggests that very quick drastic weight loss has some health risks (such as gallstones), and several of the contestants got stress fractures from the exercise routines. As a person who has had a stress fracture, I can say that they don't always heal easily.

I love the show, but have mixed feelings about the ethics of the show, especially if it is true that one week our time, is equal to two or three weeks their time. I think we just have to remember that there is a fictional component to the show. Even if they were completely honest, how much more could each of us do with a personal trainer, dieticians, doctors and other medical staff on hand, a gorgeous spa setting with dream gym equiptment, a peer group of fellow dieters, no job or family responsibilities or other distractions, a competitive atmosphere, fame, and the hope of a huge cash prize.
