Webcam from the Far North!
This is purely so those of you who live where it isn't yet cold, dark and snowy can feel better about your weather! :) It's the view from the roof above the front door of the library in Palmer, Alaska (about 50 miles NE of Anchorage) where I am the director. Enjoy!
Edit: the image doesn't seem to be updating as it did in the other thread - weird. If you click on the link you'll see the current conditions. Don't ask me why the sun looks blue?? Okay, fine. After I saved the edit, it updated. As my DH says: "Computers hate me." http://64.4.231.233/jpg/image.jpg http://64.4.231.233/jpg/image.jpg |
Thanks, Pat! I'm feeling better already :)
Mel |
This is too cool! Thanks, Pat!! :D
So why is the sun BLUE?
At least we know you still have some sun even if it is weird! Mel |
I think it's something to do with the reflection off the camera mounting or the metal roof. But hey, you know, we do things differently in the north! Also to make you feel better, we had only 7 hours 16 min of daylight today, but 5 weeks to the shortest day (12/21) and then we start getting longer daylight hours again.
Hi Pat,
I LOVE this shot! Today was unseasonably warm around here, i believe we hit 18 C!! Rabbit |
Bump.
I thought you'd have more snow! You need a thermometer on there, too...just to make us feel better
I notice everyone seems to drive trucks! But I also thought trucks were really bad in the snow unless you weighted down the backs with something more than just snow. I guess because it's rural everyone needs trucks to take care of their land, right?
Hey, where is your snow???
Liza |
Ah, the snow. After it fell, we had some wind and it all blew away - honest! As for the trucks - it's the macho thing to do. And yes, they are very squirel-ly in the snow, but the guys will have them.....
Today it was 40 at 7 am, so I imagine we lose more snow. It sure makes for sloppy driving. |
By 3 o'clock it was gone ... now it's back. Such is life in the lee of the lakes.
Bumping for Rabbit - we have lots of snow - and plenty of it! Also plenty of darkness. Official daylight is after 10 am! But after Friday we start gaining again - YAY!
It sure does look dark! So sunrise is at 10; is sunset at 4?
Ha! Actual times today: sunrise 10:14, sunset 3:34, 5 hrs. 20 min. But as I said, it'll start getting longer on Friday - just seconds, but it's movement.
Oh my goodness. So what is it like on June 21? Is that the day of total sunshine?
Frankly - wonderful! :D It's only "dark" for the same 5 hrs, 20 min or so. And that happens like between midnight and 5 am, and of course, the twilight means that it's only really dark dark for a couple hours. (Just checked, sunrise 4:11 am, sunset 11:46 pm) It's all good.
WOW! I would love that, but feel for the mommies who are trying to get the kids to sleep in broad daylight! I think I should be a summer resident and then in the winter live in AZ where they don't fall back. That would be perfect!
I spent a summer in northern Norway a gazillion years ago- I don't think I slept properly for 2 months (of course I was 19 years old and probably partying whenever it was light....)
Hey! When did it snow? Mel |
A snow view for you.
Dang I can't get that link :tantrum:
Well, it's because it was dark! :) Should be good between the hours of 10 am and 3 pm here. That's - let's see - 2 pm to 7 pm Eastern time. We've had another 6-8" of snow today. Yikes, it's getting deep!
bump
Kinda looks like Alaska, there  |
Oh, ha, ha! :) We actually had a couple of warm - in the 50's! - days this week. Today it's back to the mid-20's, much more normal. Lots of snow got melted/compacted though.
Bumping this up so you can see that while it looks lovely and sunny (and we have over 10 hours of daylight now! :) ) it's really below zero with 30-40 mph winds - brrrrrrr.
It's beautiful! Thanks Pat :) Wishing you some warmth soon :sunny:
Thanks for bumping it up Pat, I love to see those pics...
On the site here does the pic change daily? Cause right now it seems to be at night, when I am viewing it... |
Hi pat,
Thanks for the bump! Now i might have to figure out how to post a picture of my daffodills and crocuses! it's spring here! Rabbit |
Ilene, it does change all the time. When you posted this morning, it likely was still dark here. We're 4 hours earlier than you, and it doesn't start to get light until close to 7 am here, 11 am your time. :)
Bumping so you can see it's not always winter here! :)
I love seeing those pics ... Thanks for the bump Pat!
Bumping.
Today (7/2) we have sunrise at 4:28 AM, sunset 11:38 PM for a total of 19h 09m 42s which is − 2m 08s from yesterday. On the downward slope towards December :) |
Thanks for the bump! I'd lost this thread :)
I love it! Thanks Pat...wow...I need to get there someday!
I also like to "visit" Hawaii on occasion so if anyone wants to join me, check this out. My co-worker wonders if it ever rains there, but really it does! Remember though, they're 5 hours behind EST http://www.honolulu.gov/multimed/waikiki.asp |
Bumping so you can see what we woke up to this morning - and appreciate where you live a little more.
Argh!!!! What a frightfully COLD sight!! ...
I love it when you bump this thread up Pat it's fun to watch the changes in your neck of the woods... |
Ooooh, I love this too so feel free to bump it up anytime!
:D |
Neat! Thanks for bumping it up! It's beautiful to look at, but I am soooooooo glad to NOT live in snow area. A few years in the mountains out west taught me that I am a Mississippi (warm weather) girl through and through.
brrrrr, Pat, that makes me COLD!! The Hawaii webcam looks more my style.
