Week of August 30 - September 5

Hello all,

after lurking for a week, I'm back again.
The good news, we got the loan! So now we are organising ourselves for moving end of October into the new house. This past week has been very pressurizing as we only heard the good news on Friday, then we had to go by the house to negociate the kitchen, which the owner said he would like to sell us; it turns out for more than a new kitchen would cost! Plus he wanted to spring the dog on us, again! Aargh!

training went well, (and eating as well) as I've been able to go to the gym again, but my knee ligaments got weird on Friday night when lying in bed and making a half-turn. They're ok now, I went for a walk on Sunday but I still got a scare.

Have a wonderful start of the week, all!

GG / Lieke

Meg 08-30-2004 06:01 AM

Good morning, everyone and it’s wonderful to be back home again. I’m still seeing highway signs when I close my eyes :dizzy: but am catching up on sleep, so feeling great. I got back into the gym this weekend and did cardio both days and two first-rate workouts: bi’s and tri’s on Saturday (ow ow ow) and shoulders yesterday — it was really over the top in number of exercises and sets, but hey! I was out of the gym for a week and needed to make up some time. By the time I got to shrugs though, my efforts were pretty feeble.

I caught Cindy's post at the end of last week’s thread about a new Challenge starting today (C6!! ) and girl, your enthusiasm is contagious! Best of luck to you — it sounds like a great plan and I know this will be the one that busts through all the plateaus and barriers for you and gets you where you want to be!

Lieke — congratulations on getting the loan! Great news — I know how you’ve been sweating over that.

I know we have lots of new posters and I haven’t had a chance to say  due to general life insanity but welcome and keep posting — I love to hear what everyone’s doing. Where’s Ilene, my :queen: these days? And Dip — hope you’re still around. I saw your boat photos in our LWL album and she’s a beauty! But who’s the hot babe with the great biceps in the picture? :?:

It’s such a relief to be home and eat clean again. I’m on my own little five week challenge right now and loving it. My new resolution is to eat more and different kinds of veggies, so if anyone has any ideas or recipes, please share!

Let’s hear from everyone!

2sw33t 08-30-2004 08:06 AM

Hi all! After (sort of) catching up on my forum-reading, I am once again amazed at all that you ladies (and Jack ;) ) do. You guys are such an inspiration.

For my weekend workout, I went on a camping/canoeing trip with my youth group on Friday and Saturday. My sister and I (we were in a tandem kayak) were the first ones to arrive at our canoe landing by nearly an hour - not because I was paddling hard or anything. I did paddle fairly consistently, though, and managed to avoid the various tree branches and river obstacles, which is more than I can say for most of the people in my group. We had a lot of fun, but it was kind of chilly waiting around wearing wet clothes.

I've re-vamped my diet a bit (I still need to fit more protein in, though), and I actually cooked last night, for the first time in weeks! I'm looking forward to eating healthy and strengthening my body... and hitting that scale goal by the end of the year :D Let's just hope my enthusiasm lasts

Hope you all have the best week! :coffee:

srmb60 08-30-2004 08:38 AM

Good morning everyone. This is my beloved Monday off. I just love this day. The house is quiet and I can do whatever I want and eat whatever strange concoctions I can dream up.
I need to do lower body today and I'd like to walk/jog too.
My upper body seems pretty feeble so I'm gonna do it three times this week. (any advice on that would be appreciated)
I should walk/jog/elliptical four or five times. This seems to be where I can throw in an extra just because I feel like it.
I need to work on increasing protein and getting my fats down just a bit.
I start nights on Friday so that'll be a new challenge. I do OK with food but feel about like a rag rug when it comes to exercise.

Mel 08-30-2004 11:58 AM

Happy Monday, LWL!

Just got back from the gym. Did a heavy chest and tricep workout, then 1/2 hour of elliptical. My shoulder and abs are still really bothering me, so it's becoming a challenge to find ways to work other body parts hard enough to do any good without the injured parts impeding the workout. I used to finish my chest workout with pushups to failure, but lately my abs fail first at around 10 pushups- hardly a workout for my chest! This body part falling apart bit is getting depressing :?: The gym was steamy today- I thought it felt nice to get good and sweaty, but I got a real earful from a few members. Hmmm...don't want to sweat when you workout?

SusanB- I think doing Upper Body 3 times in a week is a bit much. If you are lifting to failure, you're breaking down muscle tissue that needs at least 3-4 days to recover and rebuild stronger. If you are not pushing yourself to that point, you're not going to build muscle and get stronger anyway. Working the same muscle group too often just leads to burning muscle tissue, injury, fatigue, and overtraining in general. Twice a week is PLENTY! Or break it up so that yu are doing different muscle groups each day: back and biceps, chest and triceps, shoulders and arms. There you go- three days and you've hit all the parts and given yourself plenty of time to really focus on each muscle group.

Jack-see above.

Lieke! Congratulations! I had to re-read your post to remember that in most of Europe, kitchen cabinets and appliances do not come with the house. In North America, the cabinets at least are always part of the house price and usually the appliances unless special arrangements are made in the negotiations. We learned that the hard way. I'll never forget the look on my mother's face the day we were supposed to move into our house in Grenoble, and she found basically an empty room where the kitchen had been. Talk about culture shock!

Hiya Meg! Are you hurting after a week of no gym?

2sw33: The kyaking sounds fun! I used to do a lot of white water, but haven't been in a boat in years. One of those things I think I'll always get back to doing. I think time's running out.

Must be the last gasp of vacation for some of you lifters out there- haven't seen L2L or Dip for a while. Cindy, Tiki, Ilene, Nelie- hello, hope the week goes well.

Mel

srmb60 08-30-2004 01:22 PM

Thanks so much Mel! That's exactly the sort of advice I was looking for. I got hunting for exercises to do that with and found this site
www.bodybuilding.com
It has sooo many things to try and pretty good explanations and so on. Does anyone know it? is it good? can I work from there?
So many questions ... ah those newbies!

tikanique 08-30-2004 03:25 PM

Hiya all,

Crazy executives were in my office most of last week - so posting had to be kept to a minimum. Meg, GREAT to see you back. I know what you mean about highway signs. Whenever I finish a roadtrip, if I've had to drive more than an hour at night once i go to bed, I can still see the white lines of the road. Drives me nuts. Good luck on your challenge.

Jack, no dear, you can never rest. There is always something to fix, clean, remodel, that's how you keep your mind sharp.

Two questions - one workout related and one not - What are some good arm exercises I can have the cheer team do that do not involve weights? They need to build strength in both their bis and tris and other than tricep dips, I'm drawing a blank. Second, how old is old enough to have members of the opposite sex making phone calls to the house? DS is entering 7th grade and there are about 3 girls that have started calling. I don't want to be the overprotective mom, but I also don't want to be the overly liberal mom. Suggestions?

Tiki.

rochemist 08-30-2004 05:19 PM

Hi LWL!

I know, I lurk and don't post much, but ya'll have inspired me.

Tiki- You got to the 7th grade, be thankful! They started calling here in 6th grade, and those girls are nuts. I was never that silly when I was that age  Okay I am probably lying! Those push-ups Mel was talking about make a good upper body work-out. Since I am also a huge fan of Yoga can I suggest some Downward Dogs, hold for 6-11 breaths, concentrate and its all about the arms and hamstrings. Cheerleaders need both.

Mel- Sorry your still hurting girl. My husband saw your picture and said who is that pretty lady, she looks like a young Carrie Fisher. :D My elbow started to hinge during my workout today, but I never dropped weight or sets. And I am finally after this long time off from the gym (been back about 3 weeks) I got a mile done in 13:34:02. A nice improvement for me in the cardio department.

Susan- I switch from days to nights every month, the thing it to make time to excercise without compromising too much sleep. For me that means saying sleep is a min. of 6 hours, and if that means going to bed early and waking up early so be it. Or even worse working out after work I will do it. Same goes for day shifts. Also if I missed a workout I missed it, progress not perfection ;) We do have lives after all.

JCH- Love the enthusiasm

Meg- What kind of recipes are you looking for? I love my veggies, but I eat cheese (oh the horrors :yikes: ;) ) , so most my recipes may not work for you. :dunno:

Jack- "Honey do" lists never end.

Lieke- Someday I will grow up and have a house congrats on the loan.

To everyone else HI! and if you don't know me I am just Chris. Doing it one day at a time like the rest of ya'll ;)

Chris

2sw33t 08-31-2004 08:50 AM

SusanB – Good luck with starting nights – that would be tough for me, I’m no good at being productive at night. I’d like to echo your question on bodybuilding.com (I’m always looking for new sites to read – it keeps me interested/motivated)

Mel – Sorry to hear your body isn’t back to normal, but at least you’re working around the problems. I hope it gets better soon.

Tiki – 7th grade, huh? Well, I’m not much good for parenting advice since I don’t have children, but I have the feeling I’d treat those girls calling my son the way my Dad would treat boys calling me (let’s just say, it wouldn’t be pretty). What does your DS think about it?

Chris – Hi! I remember you from the journals… I’m glad to find your posts here :)

Anyway, I don't usually post two days in a row, but maybe it'll help keep me on track. I did well yesterday with exercizing and eating (I cooked again!). I went to Curves, did my Day 1 lifting, and jogged 2 miles at the track. I think I'm not going to do Curves on my lifting days, though, because I've been reading the thread on cardio and lifting. I count Curves as cardio (my heart rate is always above the "target" when I'm there), and I always do it before lifting because it's not open that late, so I'm probably depleting the glycogen in my muscles before I get to lift.

One thing I've been doing lately is helping my little sister (9 yo) do a workout of lifting and running (she's rather chunky and she hates getting picked on about it). As far as weights go, I have her do a lot of the exercises with just the dumbbells bars, since the lightest I can put on them evenly is 5 lbs. I may invest in a few of those pink rubber dumbbells for her sake. I'm concerned a little about my ability to correct her form, though. I can't seem to get her to grasp the concept of not rounding her back but not overarching and sticking her butt out. Too bad she never took ballet. Anyway, does anyone have advice on training a youngster?

srmb60 08-31-2004 09:02 AM

Thanks Chris and 2sw33t (JCH?) - if I get supper out before I go to bed and I sleep solidly, I have a couple of hours in the afternoon. Say 3-5 that I can work in and after supper. I'll just have to plan a little and stick with it.
I did lower body yesterday and I can tell.
Today is back and biceps (thanks Mel).
Oh and I tried that cottage cheese, jello, strawberry thing. I think it's Ilene's. Yummy!

LKTS 08-31-2004 01:01 PM

Hi all,
This week my goal is to eat clean and log everything in Fitday. Yesterday went well as far as that was concerned. I also found a gym I think I'll check out.

Re lifting apparel, do people have particular shoes they like to wear? In the past I've always just worn my running shoes b/c that's what I have, but should I get some cross-trainers or something?

MrsJim 08-31-2004 02:31 PM

Hi Laura - I see you live in the Bay Area too :)

I just wear my New Balance crosstrainers - I don't think you have to wear special 'lifting shoes' although there ARE some out there (way expensive though). Your running shoes should be fine - I wouldn't recommend sandals though...

2sw33t 08-31-2004 02:38 PM

Just a quick post re: bodybuilders.com - I've read through of bit of the stuff on the site (there's a TON!), and I've found articles giving a lot of contradictory information, even on what exercises are good/bad. I think, to some extent, that's indicative of the various contraversies within the bodybuilding world - but it makes it hard to tell good info from bad info.

MrsJim 08-31-2004 02:52 PM

Also...the thing about Bodybuilders.com is the fact that it is essentially a RETAIL site. It exists for one reason: To sell product. And quite a lot of the products they sell are really geared towards 'hardcore' bodybuilders, and a lot of them are a waste of money, quite frankly.

If you want exercise routines, I'd use either Krista's Stumptous site, or www.abcbodybuilding.com, or just go to the library and check out some books (Krista has some recommended reading on her site as well!). Just my two cents.

srmb60 08-31-2004 08:07 PM

Oh, oh yes. I'll have a look at the abc one as well. Thanks all!
Now I have a question. (what another one?) I did lower body yesterday and back today and now my tailbone hurts. I'm gonna take ibuprophen and do the heat and cold thing (watching the hockey game) But do you have some tips for me? Stretches or something?

3fcuser1058250 08-31-2004 10:13 PM

Meg – Happy to have you back sistah :grouphug:... Wow that was quite the pic !!

Mel – Get well soon girl!! Healing vibes headin’ your way!!

Cindy – thanks for the reminder of setting goals again... I think that has been the problem in August...

GG – I’m so happy that your loan came through... How elated you must be... And your nails will thank you too... I didn’t know kitchen cabinet do NOT come with the house in Europe??!!

2sw33t -- “hitting that scale goal by the end of the year” – A bell went off when I read that for some reason... and with that in mind, like Cindy, will have a goal for Christmas... Kayaking does sound like fun DH mentioned that we should take lessons next year... He and I really must get into doing something healthy together other than make meals and eat healthy, although that is a good thing to do together. But DH although lean could use some muscles on that little body, cardio wouldn’t hurt the man either... Also congrats on planning ahead your meals, that’s really half the battle! I have the same problem in the gym with DS about grasping the concept of not rounding his back but not overarching and sticking his butt out. I sure could use some suggestions there too... I’m not very good at explaining things like that...

Tiki -- Don’t IMO make a big fuss about the girls calling... If it gets really bad maybe set a time limit on the call 5 mins lets say, and then set another time limit no calls after 7:30PM or 8PM whatever time you think is appropriate, unless it’s homework related. Try to encourage more the “just friends” instead of “bf” or “gf” theme and group outings to the show etc. As for the arm exercise without weights the Downward Dog that Rochemist mentioned, reminded me of another Yoga exercise that really hits the arms which is also a warm up to the headstand....It’s like the downward facing dog but you do it on your elbows and your fingers are interlocked and you bring your chin to touch them... it’s kind of like pushups on your elbow with your butt in the air...... I can’t find a pic of it at the moment but I’ll keep looking...

SusanB -- Oh, I can’t wait for the quiet house next Monday... I have not had one since June when school let out... Even though the kids are 14 and 16, they still feel sometimes like they are attached to my hip... Like I need to be wider there!! Aw, but I do love them to bits because soon they’ll be gone, in 4 years DS will be 20!! Holy *bleep* ... I’m glad you liked the CC and Jello, I haven’t had it myself in ages and being its 10PM at the moment and I’m a bit hungry, I could use a bit or two of that concoction, but I won’t, I’m gonna go to bed in a few minutes instead...

Chris – Pop in more often I love your posts!!

Jack -- I would ABSOLUTELY buy a membership from someone like you... I know you’ll be the best person behind that counter!! I’m so happy for you my “honey do”... hehehe... I have a list longer than my arm for my hubby, count yourself lucky you aren’t married to da :queen: !!!

Well I’m certainly long winded tonite aren’t I?? I have been MIA of late and only lurking.... Exercise has been very good I must say, but food has sucked!! Tomorrow school is officially in and it’s back to the routine!! Yay for routines at times I tell ya... I did have a very good leg workout today...

Well getting  here so I must go... Dip where are ya??

Hi to everyone else... I be back tomorrow!! TTFN

Meg 09-01-2004 05:22 AM

Hey, my sistahs Ilene and Chris are back in the house! :D Things are WAY too quiet when you’re not around, chickies! So, Ilene, what’s been up with the food? Too much junk in the house? (not those  granola bars again!) No time to plan? Bad habits sneeeeaking back in? Good thing that we get a brand new day every day, eh? I’ve been on a clean eats roll since I got back last Friday and every day is easier than the one before … makes me wonder why I let myself screw up since I KNOW I just end up feeling like crap, mentally and physically. :dizzy:

Life is settling back down here and I’ve had four outstanding UB workouts over the last four days — shoulders, arms, chest, and back — so I do believe that today’s Leg Day! (Susan — I do a five day split, like Mel was talking about, so that even though I do four days of UB a week, they’re four different muscle groups and all have a chance to recover before I work them again a week later — it’s kind of advanced program and the three-day split that Mel described sounds like it would be perfect for you now ;) ). Yep, Mel — all my muscles hurt so gooooood  . Seriously, it’s remarkable how sore I’ve gotten after missing just one week of workouts. Carrying furniture up three flights of stairs with DS apparently didn't count as a workout as far as my body’s concerned!

As for legs today, I’ve started doing deadlifts again, though I’m never sure whether to do them on Leg Day or Back Day. And I want to try some funky squat lunges that I saw someone doing — just to keep changing things up. Track lunges will be on the menu too, along with squats.

Tiki — I thought of you while I was gone because guess what was right down the street from DS’s new apartment? A KK store!   Complete with seductive odors wafting out at all hours of the day and night …. I had to do a lot of cussing, let me tell you!

Chris — WTG on the cardio! It’s a great feeling isn’t it? As to veggie recipes, I’m looking for anything that’s good, so lay them on me, regardless of cheese :faint: and I can play with them.

Susan—I’ve never had a problem with my tailbone so can’t help you out specifically, but rest and ibuprophen are usually the right things for something like that. I think I'd wait until the pain is gone to work out LB again if I were you. Hope it feels better soon! :)

How's C6 going, Cindy? Off to a great start, I hope!

Hi to all  and have a great day!

3fcuser1058250 09-01-2004 06:48 AM

Hey Meg  You early bird you!! No, it hasn't been the granola bars, although I have had one or two but not six in a row...whew, for that!! Just tooooo many BLT's that add up over time... oh, and last but not least WINE!!!!!

So I'm back on track with thoughtful eating and planning, planning, planning...

Cindy -- Are you taking pics? Don't be shy, to show 'em to us, but if you are just take them for yourself for accountability and motivation...;)

Today is shoulders for moi... I haven't done them since the 21st, so it's time...I really really like L2L's cable workout it's a tough one but very effective. Then afterwards I have to run 5k and I just may try it outside weather permitting...or on the :tread: if it's not nice...

Well it's shower time...TTFN...WORK !!! SUCKS !!

BfL_Cat 09-01-2004 02:47 PM

Hey everyone!

Happy to report I've nearly 3 perfect BFL days under my belt! My workouts have been great, extra walking in every day at lunch, and my calories are right around 1600ish - close enough for me for now. I'm pretty tired due to the more aggressive workouts (I was really coasting lately), so the tired=hungry thing is messing with me.

Ilene - yes, already took pictures - they're not pretty, and it was the first day of TOM, so maximum puffiness! But, as I haven't taken any since late April, it was time... I think I"ll keep them to myself until some improvement has been made - that 5# I gained back definitely shows! And why does it always go right to your middle??? You'll also be happy to hear I've started a new Ab program - it's a 12-week program to go along with BFL timing - and I'm squeezing the exercises in between UBWOs and LBWOs instead of doing on cardio days. Seems to work better for me, even if it means I have to do them in "public"!

I was thinking about Mel this morning, while doing leg presses. We don't have a sled, so I have to use a machine, and it maxes out at 300#. I'm already at 220#, so it's just a matter of weeks before I'm up to 300#. I was wondering what I"d do then, but then I remembered what Mel said, and decided that I'd just increase my reps - 300# is plenty, and I don't want big bulky legs either!

Well, I'd better get back to work - have a few more hours to put in...

Hope everyone is doing well. Hiya Dip - where are you?
Cindy

EofAZ 09-01-2004 04:29 PM

Good Afternoon LWL,

What a crazy week this has been, I have opened up this page every day and f i n a l l y was able to read it today. I do most of my reading during lunch so if I have to cut it short there goes my reading time. I have managed to keep up with my workouts, did UB Monday and will do LB tonight. I can still feel my workout from Monday, I just love it.

Meg, it is so nice to have you back, it is way to quiet here with you gone too. I was thinking about you this morning when I saw the forecast for Frances. It’s a good thing you made your trip when you did, the weather along the east coast is going to get pretty nasty again.

Ilene, I relate so well to routine. M-F I do so well eating and working out but the weekends can really mess up my “system”. I think it is because I have time to myself before work to workout, pack lunch, and plan my day. On the weekends I don’t have that precious time.

GG, Congratulations on the house. I learn so much on this site, I had no idea you have to negotiate the kitchen cupboards.

Jack, I would think they would be begging you to work for them. You would be perfect for a sales position ESPECIALLY in a gym. Sorry that you had that spill, if it was your brakes you may not want to apply for any bicycle mechanic positions. (Sorry, couldn’t resist, I really do hope you weren’t hurt.)

SusanB, Keep asking those questions. Not all of us are experienced and I’m learning so much from the responses to your questions.

Well my lunch is up so hi to everyone and I'll talk to you all later.

Meg 09-01-2004 05:58 PM

E -- even though I'm out of harms way now, I'm a very worried mama about the storm that coming since DS is right in the center of the forecasted storm track. It's supposed to be twice as wide as Charlie and more powerful. I'm actually about to call DS and see if I can talk him into driving north on Friday since he has a four day weekend ... the Orlando area hasn't even begun to recover from the last hurricane and another one would be absolutely devastating.

He's only 18 and on his own for the first time ...

3fcuser1058250 09-01-2004 08:15 PM

Darn, I have to post another quickie one! :( D wants the puter...

But I did want to share that I've had a superb day too... Food was spot on and I just didn't have time to go to the gym but I did go out and jogged 6k or 3.7miles for my American friends... I feel great!!

Cindy -- I have to take pics also, but I'm waiting for our new camera... Ok, it's just an excuse I'll do it later...

TTFN...Luv yas all!!

mette 09-02-2004 01:49 AM

Good morning LWL.

I have been rearranging my workouts this week, and have started working out in the mornings. Strangely enough, I have no problems lifting heavy at 7 in the morning (I really thought I would!).
I have been lifting to failure both Monday (lower body) and Wednesday (upper body), increasing quite a lot of weight too. And I got sore! :D

As for the squats – I worry that if I put too much weight on the bar I won’t be able to lift it off my shoulders and up on the rack without dropping it to the floor when I’m done. I guess I just have to work on getting stronger arms, huh?

Jack – hope you didn’t get hurt. And Ilene – I loved the jello, cottage cheese and strawberries too!

 Longtime lurker (and lifter) here; I hope you don't mind me jumping in, when I read this I became a bit concerned. What sort of squat rack does your gym have you using?!? The squat rack at my gym has adjustable pins, so when I rack the weight it's by walking up to the frame and bending at the knees to lower the weight from my shoulders to the rack. I never lift the weight with my arms at all. At a working weight of 135, there's no way I could pick that up off my shoulders. You're right to be concerned about too much weight on the bar, if you're lifting it up with your arms to put it back!

When I first read this I thought you were concerned just generally with lifting more weight and possibly dropping it, and wanted to share a tip that my husband (former powerlifter) taught me just this week. Load the bar with the higher weight, set the safety bars really high (say a foot under the rack assuming you are lifting the weight off the rack on your shoulders) and do half squats down to the safety bars. It really helps with the fear that you won't be able to unrack safely or squat safely (fear's the main thing holding back my squats.) Then next time you work out, lower the safety bars another notch, until you're doing a full squat with the formerly scary weight.

Hope everyone's having a great and powerful day!

Linda C.

Mel 09-02-2004 09:23 AM

Hi Linda! Thanks for coming out of lurkdom

That was exactly my reaction to mette's post about squats, too. Check the equipment, and if you are really lifting the bar to re-rack it, get someone to show you how to change the pins on the squat rack or the hooks on a power cage if that's what you use.

One of the most useful things I was taught was how to safely dump the bar. When I first started lifting, my trainer set the safeties right where they should be, had me go down into a proper squat with an empty bar, and dump it backwards. I practiced with increasing amounts of weight so that if the day ever arose when I needed to do it, I would feel comfortable knowing that the safeties would hold, I wouldn't break my back, or die of embarrassment :o

Leg day yesterday was brutal; I'm hobbling around like a ninty year old with bad arthritis! Feels great :D

Mel

mette 09-02-2004 11:54 AM

Really??? See, this is why posting in, and reading this forum is so good! I always learn something. Linda and Mel: thank you!

I had a session with an instructor when I started; he helped me put together my program, and went through the different exercises, proper form, etc. with me.
But as for the rack – I walk up to it, face first – lift the bar off the rack and put it on my shoulders, back off a couple of steps and do the squats.
I started off with the bar (45lbs) and that was OK to lift with my arms – but as I’m adding weight, it’s getting harder to lift. Tomorrow I’ll get somebody to show me how to do this, and see if this is a kind of rack where it can be done.

Linda – great tip about safety bars too. And Mel about learning how to safely dump the bar, ditto. Thanks! :D

Mette -- I looked for a little video to show you how to do squats (since a picture is worth a thousand words :) ) but couldn't find one that shows how to get the bar off the rack. So, here goes in words: set the bar at shoulder height on the pins. Walk up to the bar and duck under it. Back up into the bar until it's resting on your shoulders but still on the pins. Lift up with your shoulders to get the bar off the pins and then walk backwards a few steps, set your feet comfortably, and do the squats. When you're done, walk forward into the pins and set the bar down. Your arms never have to lift the bar.

I'm sure there's someone at the gym who can help you with this or you can just watch other people as they do squats. ;)

Hope that helps!

If anyone's interested, here are two web sites that have nice little video clips of exercise demos: http://www.fitsite.com/anatomy.cfm and http://www.exrx.net/Lists/Directory.html

Meg,

I thought you might be VERY worried; my husband's two children are living in Orlando along with 2 grandkids. They are both older then your son, (mid 20's) but DD is hearing impaired and the Deaf Culture really sees things so differently then the hearing, we do worry about her some times. She moved to Orlando in June to be closer to her Mom so she really isn’t experienced with the seriousness of the weather there.

Hopefully your son will listen to you and take advantage of the long weekend.

I’ll be thinking about you this weekend, you can count on it.

Thanks, E, your thoughts are much appreciated! He's sitting in stopped traffic in Georgia at the moment but is heading north, which is all that counts. It's taken 7 hours to go about 150 miles, but traffic should start to clear up soon, I hope.

I'm sure that 3FC has many members (along with their family members) in the area that's going to be affected by this dreadful hurricane and hope that all make it through safe and sound. :goodvibes

Mette -- Have you ever seen someone on the squat rack doing it the way you do it with heavy weights? Or maybe you've seen them do it the way the other gals explained... I had an OMG response too when I read it...

Meg -- You KNOW my thoughts are with you and your DS... You're right as long as he's heading north it's good no matter how long it takes him...

Well today was a very good day also... did shoulders only with the cables with a few extras for good measure... felt good :D... Added some abs too... more than usual at that...

Other than that not too dang much... It is a gorgeous day here today, feels like fall already...

Food is good but still not 100% clean although the calories are at the proper level...

Well, speaking of food it's time to eat... Salad and tomatoes and steak...:hun:....TTFN...

I think I missed posting one day. Drat, that work thing interferes in my life! However, I had a nice chat with our physiotherapist about a little pain I had in my forearm. I was doing stupid things with my wrist. So he gave me some tips to do with my shoulders instead. (It was supposed to be shoulders and arms day.) I did some ab stuff this evening and tomorrow is legs day again. Ugh! They just stopped hurting!
Today (starving after work) I discovered tuna. I don't really like it, but it works. My fats are still a bit higher than I'd like 27% and it's my protein that's lacking. I also had a bowl of oatmeal this evening ... with one teaspoon of honey. Ha! I used to be the queen of cream and brown sugar.
I've been surfing the net, trying to find a picture of an extremely fit woman who's about my build, to ... ya know ... imagine at. Lordy! I got into some places I didn't want to be. And I never really found one. I'll look again tomorrow maybe.
Please know that my prayers include those threatened by horrifying weather.

Meg, I'm sorry you're on such pins and needles right now. How far is your son going to go? I have lots of friends in Florida, hopefully they will also evacuate.

Thanks for those video clips!

Yes, that was my problem too. I know I did the exercise correctly from descriptions and videos; it was how to get the bar off the rack that was the problem.
Thank you for your help, and the link to fitsite.com too; I looked around a bit and it looks very good.

As for watching how others do the exercises - I’m going to the gym very early in the morning, so we aren’t that many people in the weight room. I don’t know why none of the others do squats. I’ve seen people use the bars and rack to do deadlifts and goodmornings, but not squats.

After all the OMG reactions from you guys, I got a bit worried that maybe there are other exercises I don’t do correctly too – so today I dragged one of the instructors along and made him watch me do all the exercises on today’s program, to see if I did it correctly. :p
I also did squats correctly and added 10lbs just because I didn’t have to use arms… :D

Mette -- you won't see many other people doing squats because they're HARD! But there's nothing better to shape up your legs and butt (except maybe lunges and you won't see a lot of those either, I'm guessing :D ) so keep 'em up. Congratulations on adding on the 10#s -- you'll really start to see your numbers go up now that you've got the technique down pat. When I finally lost enough weight to do squats, I had to use a broomstick to master the form! :dizzy:

TGIF gang :coffee: ! What's everyone got planned for the weekend? We're watching the hurricane news here and wondering if DS will have an apartment and college to go back to next week (when last I heard from him, he finally had made it out of the evacuation traffic around Atlanta and was flying through North Carolina -- hopefully he's sleeping at the moment). One of the big problems in the Orlando area is all the debris left over from Hurricane Charlie. Every house has a pile of branches and tree limbs in front of it, waiting to be picked up, and now it's all going to become airborne when this new hurricane hits. Even though I'm going to have DS safe at home, there are a lot of people, including his classmates, who are still in harm's way down there and I've got my fingers crossed that things turn out better than they're predicting. .

Rest day from weights yesterday so I'm raring to go today -- shoulders are on the menu. What's everyone's fave shoulder exercise? -- I need to mix it up and try some fresh stuff. Last week I did the shoulder T's (a/k/a Beth Horn raises) and died on those -- any others?

Have a great three-day weekend everyone -- can you believe that it's the unofficial end of summer already?

Susan -- Hi there, glad to see you back !! Weren't you the one who said to come and get you if you missed too long, well I was thinking of you last night ;) ... You're lucky I had forgotten your name!

Yes, Gang TGIFF!! It hasn't been a bad week but a very busy one... I've had to make notes to remember things to do and appointments to go to..

Ok shower time already...TTFN...

BfL_Cat 09-03-2004 07:31 AM

Good morning everyone!

Meg - glad to know your son made it out of Florida ok. I actually know two crazy women who are actually flying down there today! Both have family down there and had already had plans to go down after Charley.... Not what I'd be doing....

I'm headed to Michigan for the weekend - I was going to drive, but then my big boss heard about it and spent an hour on the internet finding me a great airfare+car deal for $250! I really couldn't justify 16 hours in the car after seeing that, so I'm flying.

My workouts this week have been great, and food has been great with the exception of yesterday - I missed meal 4, and after that it was all kind of weird - I didn't really eat very much, but it wasn't good protein and carbs...

The weekend will be a challenge - my friends are all supposedly doing Challenges too, but when we get together that seems to fall by the wayside...

Well, need to get packing and get my UBWO in this morning as well. Everyone have a great weekend!
Cindy
