June Bugs

:D

I just couldn't resist the reference to summer insects that are everywhere here!

Here's a new thread for us. Write away.

Rhonda

Lydia227 06-02-2011 07:20 AM

Thanks for starting the thread Rhonda. June bugs or crazy mosquitoes I've been bitten all over yesterday while planting and weeding. Crazy hot here too. I thought the Bikram yoga class I took on Monday was insane. Working outdoors like this is a lot like that experience. Wore me out enough that I slept straight through for nine hours last night. That never happens.

Running late. Got to get DS2 ready for school. Stay cool to all of you where the heat is crazy hot!

Tejas 06-02-2011 06:00 PM

Lydia, I was swarmed by mosquitos this morning while weeding. I thought that they would be gone by 9AM :nono:

As I mentioned, my right knee has been hurting and swelling again. I am getting a MRI next week. The docs continue to say take anti-inflammatories and don't do anything that hurts. So, today, I took Alleve before the workout and just did the whole workout, including 3 sets of 8 deadlifts at 132 and rear-foot elevated squats while holding a 25 pound KB and 4 other exercises that involved weights of 25-45 pounds. We'll just see what my knee does with that. If it swells up again, I might just take some pictures of it for the MD to look at.

Honestly, I think I've got Osgood-Schlatter's syndrome even though it is mostly seen in kids who are still growing. We'll see.

indiblue 06-03-2011 08:19 AM

Tejas I have Osgood-Schlatter's! Well, allegedly you can't have OS after you're a teenager, but I still have the huge bumps under my knee to prove that something is still going on there. It's allegedly ossification of bone that grew over the swelling when I had OS. I definitely have trouble with squats and anything that engages whatever muscles/tendons are behind the bumps.

jamsk8r 06-03-2011 08:55 AM

Hey ladies! Just a flyby to say that I'm running my first ultramarathon tomorrow (Saturday), 50 miles! (or die trying, lol) I've been "tapering" all week, which means bored out of my skull and half crazy cuz I can't do a real workout. We're supposed to have gorgeous weather, a bit hot, maybe, for running, but I'm trying to just be grateful it won't be raining all day. Have to run out today to pick up water and a few must-have snacks, plus find some shorts or lightweight capris that won't chafe me into the ground. This is about a 20 degree temperature jump for us, and all the shorts I own are too rough in the seams for 50 miles. Wish me luck! I'll report in if I survive! ;)

silverbirch 06-03-2011 10:36 AM

Go Cheryl! You are such a crazy inspiration! I am with you in spirit!

Shannon in ATL 06-03-2011 11:14 AM

Cheryl - go for snug capris or knee length instead of shorts for that distance, ones that are long enough that they won't roll up and tight enough that they won't sag in the crotch. From my experiences running in the heat I'm thinking that longer, smoother fabrics are the way to go. Shorts chafe, tighter shorts that aren't quite long enough roll up between the thighs and chafe, pants that are too loose chafe. You can always wear a pair of your shorts over them if you don't like the tight look. I know I don't. Yesterday it was 98 on my run - hope yours isn't that hot!

Good luck! :)

Tejas 06-04-2011 12:37 AM

Cheryl.....good luck. We'll be thinking of you and rooting you on!!!

Indiblue, I read on-line about adults with the same affliction. The orthopedist didn't put a name on it, just said calcification because of tendon pulling away from bone. Same thing as I understand it. But, what's causing it and what can I do without causing chronic or permanent damage. Hopefully, they'll have an answer soon. I'm a calm person, but the idea of no deadlifts just isn't acceptable!

Interesting. I have had OS since I was 11 years old and I've never been told that doing certain movements can cause permanent damage. All of my orthopedic surgeons have told me just to let the pain be my guide. If I'm having trouble I usually ice/ibuprofen the heck out of it and sometimes wear a patella band thing. I'm not sure how much good they do but at least psychologically it gave me some relief.

Tejas 06-04-2011 07:48 AM

Well, I hope that it doesn't cause permanent damage--it's just a worry. The knees are rather important to keep healthy

Lydia227 06-04-2011 03:03 PM

Cheryl, just saw your post. Best of luck out there today! :cheer3: Can't wait to hear about your experience!

Mel 06-04-2011 03:26 PM

Cheryl- Thinking of you! WOW :dizzy: I did 1 1/2K of sprints yesterday and am really feeling it. (of course the OH squats between sprints also contributed) but 50 miles!!!!
Hope you aren't too beat at the end.

Mel

Tejas 06-05-2011 08:32 PM

Looking for Cheryl's report!

Shannon in ATL 06-05-2011 09:45 PM

Also looking for Cheryl! :)

midwife 06-07-2011 02:43 PM

Checking in to wish Lydia Happy Birthday!!! :hb:

Need to get back to lifting. My forearms are squishy. :(

silverbirch 06-07-2011 03:45 PM

Really? A LYDIA birthday? Happy, happy birthday, dear Lydia!

Lydia227 06-07-2011 07:50 PM

Ah thanks Silver and Midwife. Yep. Entered the number 43 as "age" on the elliptical this morning for the first time. I kept trying to enter 34 the first three times till I got it in right. Guess I'm in denial. or dyslexic when I'm dehydrated. (lifted before cardio today)

Had a great two hour workout then came home and made my own birthday cake. It was/is a three layer white cake with lemon curd filling in the middle and egg white frosting. It was in my Cooking Light cookbook. OMG. Yummy. I've been craving lemons like crazy and thought this was a much better option than a bakery cake made with shortening. Now...I'll have to find a home for the 3/4 of the cake that is left over.

DH gave me my gift early this morning... two anchors for the TRX system. Yay....One for inside the house and one for the deck outside. Looking forward to playing with that outside soon. ;)

Shannon in ATL 06-08-2011 11:27 AM

Happy late birthday, Lydia! Sounds like it was a great day!

Tejas 06-08-2011 09:00 PM

Me too, Lydia!! Happy birthday, late! The cake sounds wonderful.

Mel 06-09-2011 06:29 AM

Happy belated birthday, Lydia!

Is Cheryl still out there?

I am training, training, training. And really tired of pull ups!

Mel

Lydia227 06-09-2011 11:45 AM

Thanks Shannon, Rhonda and Mel.

Yeah, I dunno I think maybe we might need to send the search and rescue out for Cheryl...she could still be out there running.

Mel, but just think of how awesome and strong you are to be doing this. I really need to continue to work on mine. I think if I could master a kipping pullup I'd be much happier.

Another scorcher day today. I think we might hit 100. Just got home from my workout and there was not a dry spot on me clothes. Great fun. :goodvibes:

midwife 06-09-2011 12:52 PM

I'm going to lift weights today.

That is all.

I will report back later, if I can sit down and type. Oh, that will be Saturday I can't sit down!

nelie 06-09-2011 01:58 PM

Yesterday was painfully hot. Today is definitely hot :)

We went to a birthday party with lots of kids on Saturday and well.... I told my husband that they are little bundles of disease as we both got sick but with completely different symptoms!!

Shannon in ATL 06-09-2011 03:05 PM

Nelie - kids are a walking germ center, I swear.

Midwife - definitely lift some weights!

Lydia - hot here, too. And raining today, which just makes the hot feel sticky.

Mel - train away!

I've set myself up a personal bootcamp for the next four weeks, started this past Monday. To date I've run two days and done a DB circuit with cardio after the other two days. I'm off to a good start.

Tejas 06-14-2011 02:06 PM

OK, here is what the MRI revealed. I have IT bursitis and patellar tendonitis and start physio on Monday. The MD said that the tendonitis can be difficult to heal. OK, I will though!! I'm going to miss those dead lifts for a while.

No tears, no need for surgery so that's all good.

Shannon in ATL 06-14-2011 04:44 PM

Tejas - glad that you aren't going to need surgery!

I think Cheryl ran away. :)

Lydia227 06-15-2011 07:14 AM

Rhonda: Arrg. Knees! But like Shannon said it's great you won't need a surgical correction. Hopefully your PT will be able to offer suggestions to your workout that will prevent the chance of a repeat flareup. Knees are such delicate things sometimes. Yesterday I had a case of matchstick knees. (That's what I call it when it makes me cringe at the thought of bending then to squat.) I knew it was going to be rough the as I walked down the stairs into the kitchen and planned a lighter legs workout to compensate for it. Today they feel fine. Go figure.

Midwife: So! How did the lifting session go? :goodvibes:

Nelie: Hope you are feeling better today. Yep, bundles of disease. It gets better as they become older.

Shannon: How's the new bootcamp?

I"m thinking about getting kettlebells. DH has expressed an interest. He's pretty enthusiastic about the TRX and thinks the kettlebells are also something he would like to try. I'm going to start him on 35lb/16K to begin and I"ve been looking at the Ader and the Dragon Door but I'm uncertain which to choose. I would like to use these for high reps (at home cardio) as well and read that the Ader can be a little slick for sets over 20 reps. Yet, some people love them. :dunno:

I've noticed that Rogue Fitness carries Ader....I'm inclined to go that route but if anyone has experience good or bad with either of these I'd be happy to hear about it. I'm looking to get four different sizes of these so I really want to get this right.

Just four more days of school for my little bundles of germs. :p We made it through our first year in NOVA. Totally proud of my sons and how they have transitioned this year. Now, lets see if their ready for Mom Camp.

nelie 06-15-2011 07:34 AM

I'm feeling better but my sinuses have been acting up.

For kettle bells, we have some GoFit ones, you can find them at Dick's. Fitness Resource and Leisure fitness also carry some kettle bells but they either had the GoFit ones or some crappy ones.

I (thought I) bought a CAP kb from Christian Fitness Factory but weirdness when I went to look at it, it says muscle driver grey series on it. It is a solid kb though. I'd check out the CFF website as well.

Tejas 06-15-2011 07:54 PM

I got my KBs from Mike Boyle's website and I love them. Just the right size, don't get slick, etc.

Thanks for the sympathetic words about knees. I'm actually enthusiastic about the physio; I'm planning to learn a lot. She will go over my program also-even talk to the trainer if needed.

I had to drive a lot to go to a funeral today and the conditions didn't allow the use of cruise control much and my knee is really swollen.

Cheryl, come back :coach:

Lydia227 06-15-2011 10:14 PM

Mike Boyle...hmmm. I'll check into that too. Sorry about your drive today. Both for the occasion and the stress to your knees. Isn't it amazing how annoying these episodes are to just the little everyday events when they are healing? Glad to know you are looking forward to your physio treatments. You have the right attitude, ask lots of questions, get many answers....and share. :D

Nelie: I recall that you have enjoyed your KBs for a while too. I'll look into CAP KBs I've seen them but haven't looked a the reviews yet. Uhg. The worst is I can't get the ones I want on Amazon Prime. Rats.

nelie 06-16-2011 07:27 AM

Yeah, you are going to have to pay for shipping. Do you have a Dick's near you? You could look at the GoFit ones there.

Shannon in ATL 06-16-2011 03:07 PM

Lydia - I shop almost exclusively on Amazon Prime these days. If I couldn't get them I might just not have them. I'm anti shipping costs. :)

Nelie- sorry about the sinus trouble. Mine have been bothering me, too.

Rhonda - bad reason to have drive today, and bad for your knees. Badness abounds. Sorry honey.

Lydia - my bootcamp is going fine from an exercise standpoint. I've been consistent, worked hard, felt the appropriate muscle soreness at the right times, but no move on my weight. Unless you count the .2/-.3/+.3/-.2 I've been swinging for two solid weeks. Annoying me.

Cheryl!!

Lydia227 06-16-2011 09:10 PM

Nelie: Maybe Mr. Lydia and I will go to Dicks on Sunday to do some shopping. It could be fun to play with some toys.

Shannon: I have the same fluctuations going on here. And seriously, each and every morning I'm entering this data into my iPhone to refer back to...weight/bodyfat % and it's a very very slow downward trend but up and down five to six times before it stays down. I guess I'm just really good at maintaining but to actually lose...I have to remember that all three things have to be spot on or I cant expect to see that hypertrophy or definition. Oh summer...I just am not ready for you this year. :p

Tejas 06-16-2011 10:57 PM

Funerals: this is the 3rd one I've been to in 14 months. This one was a friend from my DH's high school class, married to a woman in my class. It was classy though. He was, among many other things, a volunteer fire fighter and fire fighters came from local stations and from 50 miles away to participate. The funeral procession was led by fire trucks with lights flashing. Not quite as raucous as a New Orleans funeral, but still classy.

Weight fluctuations!? Well, I am still stuck but seeing the nutritionist. She told me to eat 1800, not 1500, calories, and, of course, MORE vegetables. But, I can comfortably wear pants that I wore when I weighed 10 pounds less.

Lydia227 06-18-2011 10:17 AM

Tejas: Lucky you! More calories. Like that. :carrot: There. Here's an extra vegetable for you. I need to get more vegs in my diet too. I've got them in the house...even go through the trouble to clean them, cut them and put them in baggies...where I dread the idea of eating them. Bah. I'm a fruit bat. I'll eat berries and melons all day long. Veggies, leave me less than enthused.

So......I did something fuuuun today.....anyone wanna guess.....?

K. I hate those games too. I went to a CrossFit this morning. :goodvibes: We did a brief metcon with kettlebell deadlifts and dumbbell squat thrusters. Fun.

DH came along for support but decided to join me anyway. He would like the use of his thighs back again.

Poor thing, he said the longest walk of his life was when he had to walk across the gym to get his keys at the end of the workout. My legs felt like they had been worked but I was okay...I think I'm going in to my other gym to get a little more lifting in and some intervals.

Really, nice vibe to the place. It was very impressive how they immediately recognized us, brought us into the fold, and coached us through our first workout right on the spot and then followed up with us and answered questions afterward. This is how you run a business. Nice Job.

I'm going to sign up for the three hour lifting class for next Saturday. I'm so glad I did this.

Tejas 06-18-2011 02:45 PM

OK, I give up. WHAT did you do, Lydia?

By the way, I bought KBs from Perform Better, not Mike Boyle. (I like the slightly naughty interpretation to "perform better" ;) )

Mel 06-18-2011 05:55 PM

Quote:

I went to a CrossFit this morning.

That's what Lydia and Mr. Lydia did! Can he walk yet? Thrusters a tough...especially on newbies :)

Lydia, you are right- that is how to run a business. Most that I have been in have been that way. It's REALLY too bad we don't live really close. I think we'd make excellent business partners!

My knee is still unhappy from 10 X 200 meter sprints that I did between sets of overhead squats a week and a half ago. It hasn't been helped by double unders three days in a row and some other runs and squats. I FINALLY can do more than 5 double unders in a row! I'm afraid I may be broken by the time the crossfit games roll around :p

Has any one seen Cheryl running by?

Tejas 06-19-2011 03:42 PM

Mel, I read the cross-fit note from Lydia. But, she said "fun." I thought maybe she meant that she went out for ice cream.

Lydia227 06-19-2011 04:44 PM

Rhonda: Of course it was fun. And yes, just for the record, there was ice cream involved too. We caught the tail end of a wine tasting so we stopped to pick up cones for the boys.

Mel: It is a bummer we are not in the same city. But hey, ya never know. :chin: I'm sure you told us but when are you competing? Congrats on your double unders. It's like magic when those movements finally come together.

Today was a rest day. It's been a full week in the gym so I was due. The family wanted to take a trail ride on the bikes today. Great fun. The trails were still muddy from the last rain and we ended back home with mud across the faces and down our backs. I was planning to take DH out for dinner...now we all have to shower.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend everyone!

indiblue 06-20-2011 03:42 AM

Question for you all- what do you recommend to strengthen the upper back/lats? I can't seem to ever "feel" it in in the lats when I do lat pull-downs, etc, even when I've focused very carefully on form.
