Default Barely working my arms and still sore

I work as a nurse aide. That means I'm lifting, pushing and tugging on people constantly. My muscles were sore for the first week when I started this job and I know I've gotten stronger. I figured this week, I'd start exercising more. I decided to do a very small and easy strength training DVD (bob greene's total body makeover, week 1) and my arms were on fire from just two reps. I'm guessing they were still sore from work and I was using a 5 pound which is what I usually use. Will this get better? And will this affect my muscles since my job doesn't technically allow me to have a rest day since they will always be some heavy lifting?
