Heavier weights / more sets?

I'm looking for a little help with this, I have been following programme in a book, and it tells you to up the weights before you increase the sets. All the exercises are split into three levels - beginner, intermediate and advanced. What I would like to know is how do you know when to stop upping the weights and go onto the next level? I have 2kg and 4kg weights so what hapens after that should I go up to 6kg or start at intermediate level with 2kg and doing more sets? I hope that makes sense :dizzy:

It really depends on the exercise and how hard it is for you. Bicep curls with 4 kg may be hard, but a one armed row or dumbbell squat should be easy with that weight. I think we need a little more information to help you.

Generally, if you've been doing pretty much the same program for 4-6 weeks (even with increasing weight) and it's seeming easier or you feel that you've mastered it, it's time to change.
