Hello Ladies, Wow have I been looking for you guys! I have been searching the web for some online support. I am new to this site and would love to join in the challenge if I still am able to. I had my RNY on 12/17/13 and have lost 147 so far. i still have another 60 or so to go. Things have slowed down sooo much for me and i need to stay focused with everything. I have to, have to, increase my protein, and other healthy stuff. How much protein are any of you guys highting right now?
I also need to work on increaasing the exercise to, I need to tone up, alot of areas on me. Well thats all for now, but looking forward to posting again later. Take care, Carrie
I'm not sure how it varies between the RNY and the DS, but I have noticed that even the different DS surgeons have differing recommendations as far as postop eating.
At this point (It'll be 4 years next month) my instructions are to eat a "balanced" diet, but to get a protein source at each meal. At my last visit, I had restarted some protein shakes, and the nutritionist advised against it (the liquid calorie thing, I think) and said it was unnecessary. Since I had type 2 diabetes with renal issues prior to my WLS, I thought it was probably not a bad idea, and I stopped the shakes. They don't actually focus on a number of grams, but rather want us to eventually get out of the diet mindset. With the DS, about a year after surgery your capacity to eat increases, so you really can get a more varied diet. The first year or so, it was almost all protein, simply to be able to get enough in.
Because I eat mini-meals rather than three large meals (first, I can't eat a "large" meal, and second, my blood sugar and hunger simply won't allow it), I try to get protein at each meal or snack. I am also adding in the occasional protein shake, simply because I like them, they are a good way for me to get in fruit and dairy which I may not get otherwise, and are a good way to make sure my protein intake is high enough. Not daily, but a few times per week.
I still "think protein". It is natural for me now. I tend to look for whatever I can find with the most protein/least carbs when I am out and about.
Cool, I'm navy blue, haha! Thanks Pookie. I was an athlete of sorts, so imagine my consternation when I started gaing weight so rapidly, for no apparent reason. Well, my efforst for getting more time in the gym have been thwarted for a bit. I just found out today that the horrible pain and weekness in my right shoulder is tendonitis. The tendon that's now too big is pinching the nerve that runs from my neck to my hand, so I can't push, pull, reach up or out. Getting dressed and driving are very difficult. I have to start physical therapy on the 31st.
Pookie,
I haven't seen hide nor hair of MysTek lately. But I will see her on the 29th. I'll let her know you miss her!!
I got my first set of lab results since surgery. And surprisingly, my B12, iron, BUN and createnine (sp?) were all high-normal. My RBC and WBC were both wonky, but my doc thinks it was because of a UTI I have. Apparently, I've had it for about 3 weeks. It worried me because I never felt any burning or pain until the morning I woke up Sunday morning and I couldn't pee. About 2 or 3 days after I started antibiotics, the reall pain set in, lol. My left flank hurt really bad and I was having horrible cramping and spasming in my bladder. Did you know when you have a severe bladder infection, it can feel like really bad menstrual cramps? In any case, I finally started to feel better this afternoon. I have been sleeping ALOT, though. I have been sleeping the sleep of the physically exhausted for about 12 or 13 hours for a few days. I've been loading up on water, yoghurt and cottage cheese for probiotic replacement. I also finally found a predigested protein supplement that I really like. It's called Instone and I got it at GNC. It comes in chocolate and spicy vanilla. The vanilla is really yummy. Apparently, it's a product that Sylvester Stallone and his wife are pushing. Anyway, it has 45 grams of 100% bioavailable protein per 16 oz. So, I split the packs in half and chug some 4 times a day. It's pretty low in calories, and not particularly sweet. Yay for me. LOL I wish I could do more than walk around. I went to the grocery store yesterday. I shopped for over an hour, filled the cart, spent $80, and had to take a 3 hour nap when I got home. I know being like this isn't helping me lose weight. Oh well. I have a front yard and a backyard that need work, lol.
hi girls, Thank you for your help in the reply's. I think I finally may have broke a plateau i was on. I have been really trying to increase my steps for my walking and I think that may have done it. This morning I was down 2lbs so that was a great feeling!! Those scales haven't budged in a while, and I just got sooooo sooo upset with it. Thinking that I may not be doing something correct, or that was it for me. I also am trying to be more aware of what I am eating again, and was able to increase the protein much more. I think i wasn't eating enough to eat over all. I have been trying to drink my water and it fills me up, so I don't end up eating much for food. Plus, I still do not do well with chicken, or some beef. I do well with eggs still, just feel so nervous about eating them every day, cholesteral problems with alot of family members. So i have that in the back of my mind.
Once again thank you for your help, I will be able to start to post more once I get my new exercise routine down, Looking forward to getting to know all of you more. Take care, Carrie
