Default coffee? Can I drink it?

This just occured to me while looking at the coffee pot.

So after the surgery I have to go 2 or so days without eating anything. And then after it's liquid.

So I am a major caffeine addict. I love my coffee. I drink it black so no added calories, but if I don't drink coffee I get a major migraine. I once weened myself off of caffeine and went a couple of months of it. But I love it. I really do. I missed it so much and decided that if that was my only addiction I was okay. I'm not a drinker, don't do drugs, don't smoke...

So after surgery I can only have 2 oz at a time? Will I be able to drink coffee? How does this work?

I had to completely cut out caffeine before surgery. I'm surprised your doctor didn't have you cut it off before hand, as my surgery center told me no more caffeine ever.

My mom is about a year out and can drink a very small cup of coffee now. At three weeks out, as a former coffee lover myself, I wouldn't try it. The acid would be too rough on my stomach right now.

Luckily, post surgery, you're typically on pain meds, which would help with the caffeine migraines.

I too was told to stay off caffeine. I do not remember the reasoning. I was only an occasional user.

I wasn't told to not have caffeine. Maybe its because I had already given up drinking soda way before my first pre-op appt. I was told at one of my post op appts. Either 1 month or 3 months out that I can have coffee. I was told it would help with constipation. Actually encouraged to drink it by the doctor. lol I wasn't told to drink decaf. It might be something to ask your wls center. Everyone's doctor is different and might depend on which surgery your having.

I have a keurig and have two small cups a day. I also drink Chike's iced coffee which has protein in it.

I didn't have surgery personally, but have family members who have.

My brother had surgery last September and started drinking decaf coffee a few months after surgery. He said regular coffee makes him sick.

My mom also had surgery and she's a coffee junkie. I can't tell you how long after her surgery she started drinking coffee again. She drinks about 3 cups a day, although I noticed she doesn't finish the entire cup anymore. She'll drink about 3/4 and dump the rest.

I had the band and no restrictions on coffee. I have found that I do not drink as much as I used to.....could be all the water I have been trying to get in. Ask the WLS and they will let you know their views. Can't live without my coffee, gave up cigs 33 years ago and I hardly cuss anymore.....so I figure I am entitled. LOL

I haven't had surgery yet. It's not even scheduled. Sorry for the confusion. I might be told that I can't, but it just occurred to me. I love coffee. I will have to wean myself off of it.

Unfortunately, my caffeine migraines usually involve vomiting. I don't think I want to go through that, so I'll just be smart and start weening.

I drink a LOT of coffee! Once, I did some sort of cleansing diet & stopped it for a month. i took Alleve for 3 days at the very start and never had the awful caffeine-withdrawal headache that I experienced the other time I stopped cold turkey.

some docs say no caffeine EVER, some say no coffee immediately after - of any kind. some say decaf a week after surgery is OK.

BUT if you get migraines from not drinking coffee, it's really in your best interests - surgery or no surgery - to wean yourself off as much as possible.

I am a tea drinker. I can see some people rolling their eyes. But for years, tea with caffeine was the ONLY liquid that passed these lips. And then after the surgery, a heart arrhythmia developed, largely because of unbelievable stress. However, it was fed by the huge amounts of caffeine i was drinking.

The docs forced me off caffeine, and you can imagine the conversations [and some of the unladylike language!]. But things are OK now. I can have about 3 cups of tea with caffeine PER WEEK without setting off my heart rate. I'm STILL not happy about it, but given the alternative....

I adore coffee and was told I could resume coffee 10 days post-op. I did and could only drink a small amount at a time at first (2 or 3 sips). I am now 1.5 months post-op and drink nearly a cup each morning. I add a tsp of half & half to my coffee cup and finish maybe 6oz or less in an hour.

Can i just say I'm so jealous of all you who are encouraged to drink coffee from your doctor? I got reminded again no coffee... and its like the only thing I miss from pre-surgery life.

When I go back to work, I think my students might be a little terrified of an uncaffeinated English teacher....
