Default Fact or Fiction?

I peruse two sites. Of course 3 fat chicks, and Obesity Help. I learn tons of stuff from both. So, the next story: fact or fiction?

This is from a person 8 years out. None of this is to worry your, but to make you think. Quote from bobsgrl75 "had the RNY surgery 8 yrs ago, I have kept the wt. off, but it comes with consequence's that has not been known. til now, I have lost one kidney, and it looks like the other kidney won't be very far behing it, and I will have to go on dialysis...My medical, kidney, and urologist doctor all said it is because of RNY surgery. it has something to do with the oxalate and citrate, our body doesn't use it properly now, and we get all kinds of kidney stones. Get a kidney profile done every 3 months, and watch your GFR number...if I hadn't asked for a copy of my labs the doctor would not have noticed..when he saw, he had me get a Ultra Sound, and a CT right away.. the doctor's said they are just seeing the long term results of this surgery..He also said not everyone it happens to, but I was one of the unlucky ones it happed to.. I just wanted to inform all you to watch your kidney labs, so they can get you on meds early, and you won't lose your kidneys... Sherry"

I've hear this reported before, and of course we don't know all the person's medical history, but it does give me pause.

Default Follow up on kidney function from OH

"Follow all of his rules to the letter, take all of your vitamins everyday, and drink all of your water (so important in weight loss, and also for helping against stones). this is your new ticket to life...don't throw it away! " From Bonnie

"A urologist told me to drink plenty of water with lemon and cranberry juice...it's helps the kidneys and even helps prevent kidney stones....my prayers are with you!" Hanvey3252

I do not drink my 64 oz or more each day. I get behind and by the end of the day I'm cold and my fingers are blue and if I start guzzling water late in the day then I'm going to be up all night visiting the throne room! LOL! So what am I doing to my kidneys, when I eating such high amounts of protein. I'm in this for my healthy and well-being. So like Bonnie suggested, I need to follow the rules. GET YOUR WATER IN!!!

I am only 18 months out and never had problems with my Kidneys until 9 months after my RNY. Now one of my kidney's is almost 30% calcified and both produce stones regularly. This bothers me more than most because my dad is diabetic and it looks like he may need a kidney and now I cannot give him one.

Default Sorry Ophelia!

Ophelia: I'm curious. Did the doctor give you a reason for the kidney calcification? What are you doing now to prevent more? How do you do on your water? Have you heard from other RNYers that have had problems with kidney stones? I'm sorry about your dad. My dad has had trouble with his kidneys and has been medicated for diabetes, but now is on diet controled diabetes!?!? He will be 77 y/o and is retaining too much potassium. I read so much stuff about RNY who are further out to learn from them and kidney stones seem to be a repeating theme. I'm a RN and I've seen grown men cry like babies because the stones are so painful. I had a man tell me that passing a stones is a lot more painful than a woman having a baby!!! Well, I going to try and do everything that I can to keep from finding out!!!! LOL!!

I have been experience kidney stones since I was about 16 years old. They always passed easily and never seemed to be too much of a problem. Prevention is hard. I really have to stay away from things with tannic acid (coffee and tea- which is very hard I love both) I make sure I get in at least 40 ounces of just water a day. It is hard but I am getting there. I know it should be 64 ounces but I just can't drink that much...if I did I would probably never eat anything.

WOW! i've never had a kidney problem - everything is OK with me. but i also drink a lot of water - that may be the key. but on the other hand, some people just form stones no matter what - i wonder if everyone who is thinking about the surgery should bring up these issues during the evaluation process.
