60 Minutes and RNY

  • Did anyone happen to catch 60 minutes Sunday evening? It was a very positive piece on RNY. All six of the people had diabetes and after the surgery, everyone of them know longer were being treated for it. The only negative during the interview, and I don't really know if you could call it a negative, was why there was an increase in suicide after the surgery. The doctor pretty much said, that maybe after the surgery was done that maybe it wasn't the pounds that was causing the people to be depressed. Which makes sense and makes me see the need for therapy before and maybe after WLS. Used to be 1 in 100 deaths after surgery, now 1 in 1000. Dr. also stated, that people don't get "skinny" after the surgery. I hope I got this right that the average wt. loss was around 100 lbs.?! I'm still sitting right on 200 lbs, and certainly want to lose more than 108 lbs. I'm not done losing, I'M NOT!! 20 lbs to doctor's goal and 30 to mine!!!

You all have a good day. And I raise my glass of water to all of you!!!
  • I saw that! Very encouraging...I liked that they said that people who have GBP keep the weight off...one of my minor concerns at the moment, I still feel the danger of that because of my long history of yo-yo behavior. AND kept it off long enough to show some health benefits I didn't know about...ones like the rate of getting many kinds cancer goes down...let alone heart disease and diabetes. What they found about the Duodenum is exciting, I look forward to seeing what pans out from the research there...I have 4 members of my family that are diabetic and of normal weight or slightly overweight...it would be interesting if this surgery could cure them. We shall see!
